Coordination-Driven Construction of Porphyrin Nanoribbons at a Highly Oriented Pyrolytic Graphite (HOPG)/Liquid Interface

From One-Dimensional Disordered Racemate to Ordered Racemic Conglomerates through Metal-Coordination-Driven Self-Assembly at the Liquid-Solid Interface

In recent years, there has been significant focus on investigating and controlling chiral self-assembly, specifically in the context of enantiomeric separation. This study explores the self-assembly behavior of 4-dodecyl-3,6-di(2-pyridyl)pyridazine (DPP-C12) at the interface between heptanoic acid (HA) and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) using a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and multiscale molecular modeling. The self-assembled monolayer structure formed by DPP-C12 is periodic in one direction, but aperiodic in the direction orthogonal to it. These structures resemble 1D disordered racemic compounds. Upon introducing palladium [Pd(II)] ions, complexing with DPP-C12, these 1D disordered racemic compounds spontaneously transform into 2D racemic conglomerates, which is rationalized with the assistance of force-field simulations. Our findings provide insights into the regulation of two-dimensional chirality.

Thiocarbonyl Derivatives of Natural Chlorins: Synthesis Using Lawesson's Reagent and a Study of Their Properties

The development of sulfur-containing pharmaceutical compounds is important in the advancement of medicinal chemistry. Photosensitizers (PS) that acquire new properties upon incorporation of sulfur-containing groups or individual sulfur atoms into their structure are not neglected, either. In this work, a synthesis of sulfur-containing derivatives of natural chlorophyll a using Lawesson's reagent was optimized. Thiocarbonyl chlorins were shown to have a significant bathochromic shift in the absorption and fluorescence bands. The feasibility of functionalizing the thiocarbonyl group at the macrocycle periphery by formation of a Pt(II) metal complex in the chemotherapeutic agent cisplatin was shown. The chemical stability of the resulting conjugate in aqueous solution was studied, and it was found to possess a high cytotoxic activity against sarcoma S37 tumor cells that results from the combined photodynamic and chemotherapeutic effect on these cells.

Metal Ion and Guest-Mediated Spontaneous Resolution and Solvent-Induced Chiral Symmetry Breaking in Guanine-Based Metallosupramolecular Networks

Two-dimensional (2D) chirality has been actively studied in view of numerous applications of chiral surfaces such as in chiral resolutions and enantioselective catalysis. Here, we report on the expression and amplification of chirality in hybrid 2D metallosupramolecular networks formed by a nucleobase derivative. Self-assembly of a guanine derivative appended with a pyridyl node was studied at the solution-graphite interface in the presence and absence of coordinating metal ions. In the absence of coordinating metal ions, a monolayer that is representative of a racemic compound was obtained. This system underwent spontaneous resolution upon addition of a coordinating ion and led to the formation of a racemic conglomerate. The spontaneous resolution could also be achieved upon addition of a suitable guest molecule. The mirror symmetry observed in the formation of the metallosupramolecular networks could be broken via the use of an enantiopure solvent, which led to the formation of a globally homochiral surface.

Well-organised two-dimensional self-assembly controlled by in situ formation of a Cu(II)-coordinated rufigallol derivative: a scanning tunnelling microscopy study

The two-dimensional self-assembly of rufigallol derivatives and their metal coordination were studied by scanning tunnelling microscopy. Ex situ Cu(II)-coordinated rufigallol derivatives exhibited columnar structures with some defects, whereas regular and linear structures were formed upon in situ metal coordination at solid/liquid interfaces.

Alkynyl Linkers as a Design Tool to Gain Control over the Self-Assembly of Meso-Substituted Porphyrins on HOPG

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) fall generally into two broad categories: those that are covalently bound either to the surface or to each other and those that rely on weaker forces such as hydrogen bonding or van der Waals forces. The engineering of the structure of SAMs formed from weaker forces is an exciting and complex field that often utilizes long alkane substituents bound to core moieties. The core provides the unique optical, electronic, or catalytic property desired, while the interdigitation of the alkane chains provides the means for creating well-regulated patterns of cores on the substrate. This design technique sometimes fails because some of the alkane substituents remain extended into solution rather than become interdigitated on the substrate. One contributor to this is steric hindrance between elements of the core and of the alkane chain. It is shown that the use of an alkyne linker between the core and the alkane chain can, in the case of meso-substituted porphyrins, significantly reduce this steric barrier and allow more stable and predictable surface structures to form. In particular, 5,15-bis(1-octynyl)porphyrin and 5,15-bis(1-tetradecynyl)porphyrin are shown to form significantly more stable SAMs than their alkane-linked counterparts. Scanning tunneling microscopy is used to provide detailed surface structures. Temperature and solution concentration dependence of the surface coverage is also reported. Density functional theory (DFT) is used to determine the energetic effects associated with alkane substitution at both the meso and β positions and the beneficial energetic effects of the alkyne linker.

Self-Assembly of Covalently Linked Porphyrin Dimers at the Solid-Liquid Interface

The synthesis and surface self-assembly behavior of two types of metal-porphyrin dimers is described. The first dimer type consists of two porphyrins linked via a rigid conjugated spacer, and the second type has an alkyne linker, which allows rotation of the porphyrin moieties with respect to each other. The conjugated dimers were equipped with two copper or two manganese centers, while the flexible dimers allowed a modular built-up that also made the incorporation of two different metal centers possible. The self-assembly of the new porphyrin dimers at a solid–liquid interface was investigated at the single-molecule scale using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). All dimers formed monolayers, of which the stability and the internal degree of ordering of the molecules depended on the metal centers in the porphyrins. While in all monolayers the dimers were oriented coplanar with respect to the underlying surface (‘face-on’), the flexible dimer containing a manganese and a copper center could be induced, via the application of a voltage pulse in the STM setup, to self-assemble into monolayers in which the porphyrin dimers adopted a non-common perpendicular (‘edge-on’) geometry with respect to the surface.
