Thermodynamics and Electronic Properties of Heterometallic Multinuclear Actinide-Containing Metal–Organic Frameworks with “Structural Memory”

Constructing Functional Radiation-Resistant Thorium Clusters for Catalytic Redox Reactions

When catalytic reactions are interfered with by radiation sources, thorium clusters are promising as potential catalysts due to their superior radiation resistance. However, there is currently very little research on the design synthesis and catalytic application of radiation-stable thorium clusters. In this work, we have elaborately engineered and fabricated three high-nuclear thorium cluster catalysts denoted as Th12L3-MA12, Th12L3-MA6-BF6, and Th12L3-Fcc12, which did not undergo any significant alterations in their molecular structures and compositions after irradiation with 690 kGy γ-rays. We systematically investigated the photocatalytic/thermocatalytic properties of these radiation-resistant thorium clusters for the first time and found that γ-rays could not alter their catalytic activities. In addition, it was found that ligand engineering could modulate the catalytic activity of thorium clusters, thus expanding the range of catalytic applications of thorium clusters, including reduction reactions (nitroarene reduction) and some oxidation reactions (N-heterocyclic oxidative dehydrogenation and diphenylmethane oxidation). Meanwhile, all of these organic transformation reactions achieved a >80% conversion and nearly 100% product selectivity. Radiation experiments combined with DFT calculations showed that the synergistic catalysis of thorium-oxo core and ligands led to the generation of specific active species (H+, O2•-, or tBuO/tBuOO•) and activation of substrate molecules, thus achieving superior catalytic performance. This work is not only the first to develop radiation-resistant thorium cluster catalysts to perform efficient redox reactions but also provides design ideas for the construction of high-nuclearity thorium clusters under mild conditions.

Mining for Metal-Organic Systems: Chemistry Frontiers of Th-, U-, and Zr-Materials

The conceptual framework presented in this Perspective overviews the design principles of innovative thorium-based materials that could address urgent needs of the medicinal, nuclear energy, and waste remediation sectors from the lens of zirconium and uranium analogs. We survey the intersections of Zr, Th, and U chemistry with a focus on how the intrinsic behavior of each metal translates to broader material properties, including, but not limited to, structural and topological diversity, preferential metal-ligand binding, and reactivity. On the example of several classes of materials, including organometallic complexes, polyoxometalates, and the primary focus of this Perspective, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), the design principles that govern the preparation of Zr-, Th-, and U-compounds, including oxophilicity, variation in oxidation states, and stable coordination environments have been considered. Further, we highlight how the impact of the mentioned variables may shift throughout the progression from discrete molecular systems to extended structures. We discuss the common assumption that zirconium-organic materials are typically considered a close analog of thorium-based congeners in areas such as material design and preparation. Through consideration of fundamental chemistry principles, we shed light on the relationships between Zr-, Th-, and U-based materials and highlight how a critical analysis of their distinct properties can be used to target a desired material performance. As a result, we provide a detailed understanding of Th-based materials chemistry by anchoring their fundamental properties between two well-studied reference points, zirconium- and uranium-containing analogs.

Semiconductive Behavior and Photoconductivity of Uranyl Dithiophosphinate Single Crystal

Herein, we detail the synthesis, structure, and photoconductivity of the uranyl dithiophosphinate single crystal UO2[S2P(C6H5)2]2(CH3OH)·CH3OH (denoted as U-DPDPP). The formation of bonds between uranyl ions and sulfur-based ligands endows U-DPDPP with a distinct electronic absorption property with a broadband spectrum spanning from 250 to 550 nm, giving rise to a unique semiconductive property. Under X-ray illumination, U-DPDPP displays a distinctive photoconductivity response, with a charge carrier mobility lifetime (μτ) of 2.78 × 10-4 cm2·V-1 achieved, which contradicts the electronic-silence behavior of uranyl nitrate crystal.

Friends or Foes: Fundamental Principles of Th-Organic Scaffold Chemistry Using Zr-Analogs as a Guide

The fundamental interest in actinide chemistry, particularly for the development of thorium-based materials, is experiencing a renaissance owing to the recent and rapidly growing attention to fuel cycle reactors, radiological daughters for nuclear medicine, and efficient nuclear stockpile development. Herein, we uncover fundamental principles of thorium chemistry on the example of Th-based extended structures such as metal-organic frameworks in comparison with the discrete systems and zirconium extended analogs, demonstrating remarkable over two-and-half-year chemical stability of Th-based frameworks as a function of metal node connectivity, amount of defects, and conformational linker rigidity through comprehensive spectroscopic and crystallographic analysis as well as theoretical modeling. Despite exceptional chemical stability, we report the first example of studies focusing on the reactivity of the most chemically stable Th-based frameworks in comparison with the discrete Th-based systems such as metal-organic complexes and a cage, contrasting multicycle recyclability and selectivity (>97%) of the extended structures in comparison with the molecular compounds. Overall, the presented work not only establishes the conceptual foundation for evaluating the capabilities of Th-based materials but also represents a milestone for their multifaceted future and foreshadows their potential to shape the next era of actinide chemistry.

Quest for Multifunctionality: Current Progress in the Characterization of Heterometallic Metal-Organic Frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of porous, crystalline materials that have been systematically developed for a broad range of applications. Incorporation of two or more metals into a single crystalline phase to generate heterometallic MOFs has been shown to lead to synergistic effects, in which the whole is oftentimes greater than the sum of its parts. Because geometric proximity is typically required for metals to function cooperatively, deciphering and controlling metal distributions in heterometallic MOFs is crucial to establish structure-function relationships. However, determination of short- and long-range metal distributions is nontrivial and requires the use of specialized characterization techniques. Advancements in the characterization of metal distributions and interactions at these length scales is key to rapid advancement and rational design of functional heterometallic MOFs. This perspective summarizes the state-of-the-art in the characterization of heterometallic MOFs, with a focus on techniques that allow metal distributions to be better understood. Using complementary analyses, in conjunction with computational methods, is critical as this field moves toward increasingly complex, multifunctional systems.

Ortho Effects of Tricarboxylate Linkers in Regulating Topologies of Rare-Earth Metal-Organic Frameworks

A linker design strategy is developed to attain novel polynuclear rare-earth (RE) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with unprecedented topologies. We uncover the critical role of ortho-functionalized tricarboxylate ligands in directing the construction of highly connected RE MOFs. The acidity and conformation of the tricarboxylate linkers were altered by substituting with diverse functional groups at the ortho position of the carboxyl groups. For instance, the acidity difference between carboxylate moieties resulted in forming three hexanuclear RE MOFs with novel (3,3,3,10,10)-c wxl, (3,12)-c gmx, and (3,3,3,12)-c joe topologies, respectively. In addition, when a bulky methyl group was introduced, the incompatibility between the net topology and ligand conformation guided the co-appearance of hexanuclear and tetranuclear clusters, generating a novel 3-periodic MOF with a (3,3,8,10)-c kyw net. Interestingly, a fluoro-functionalized linker prompted the formation of two unusual trinuclear clusters and produced a MOF with a fascinating (3,8,10)-c lfg topology, which could be gradually replaced by a more stable tetranuclear MOF with a new (3,12)-c lee topology with extended reaction time. This work enriches the polynuclear clusters library of RE MOFs and unveils new opportunities to construct MOFs with unprecedented structural complexity and vast application potential.

Adsorption and Detection of Iodine Species by a Thorium-Based Metal-Organic Framework

Actinide-bearing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) encompass intriguing structures and properties, but the radioactivity of actinide cripples their applications. Herein, we have constructed a new thorium-based MOF (Th-BDAT) as a bifunctional platform for the adsorption and detection of radioiodine, a more radioactive fission product that can readily spread through the atmosphere in its molecular form or via solution as anionic species. The iodine capture within the framework of Th-BDAT from both the vapor phase and the cyclohexane solution has been verified, showing that Th-BDAT features maximum I₂ adsorption capacities (Q_max) of 959 and 1046 mg/g, respectively. Notably, the Q_max of Th-BDAT toward I₂ from cyclohexane solution ranks among the highest value for Th-MOFs reported to date. Furthermore, incorporating highly extended and π-electron-rich BDAT^4- ligands renders Th-BDAT as a luminescent chemosensor whose emission can be selectively quenched by iodate with a detection limit of 1.367 μM. Our findings thus foreshadow promising directions that might unlock the full potential of actinide-based MOFs from the point of view of practical application.

Energy-structure-property relationships in uranium metal-organic frameworks

Located at the foot of the periodic table, uranium is a relatively underexplored element possessing rich chemistry. In addition to its high relevance to nuclear power, uranium shows promise for small molecule activation and photocatalysis, among many other powerful functions. Researchers have used metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to harness uranium's properties, and in their quest to do so, have discovered remarkable structures and unique properties unobserved in traditional transition metal MOFs. More recently, (e.g. the last 8-10 years), theoretical calculations of framework energetics have supplemented structure-property studies in uranium MOFs (U-MOFs). In this Perspective, we summarize how these budding energy-structure-property relationships in U-MOFs enable a deeper understanding of chemical phenomena, enlarge chemical space, and elevate the field to targeted, rather than exploratory, discovery. Importantly, this Perspective encourages interdisciplinary connections between experimentalists and theorists by demonstrating how these collaborations have elevated the entire U-MOF field.

Stepwise Crystallization of Millimeter Scale Thorium Cluster Single Crystals as a Bifunctional Platform for X-ray Detection and Shielding

Monitoring and shielding of X-ray radiation are of paramount importance across diverse fields. However, they are frequently realized in separate protocols and a single material integrating both functions remained elusive. Herein, a hexanuclear cluster [Th₆ (µ₃ -OH)₄ (µ₃ -O)₄ (H₂ O)₆ ](pba)₆ (HCOO)₆ (Th-pba-0D) incorporating high-Z thorium cations and 3-(pyridin-4-yl)benzoate ligands that can function as a brand-new dual-module platform for visible detection and efficient shielding of ionizing radiation is demonstrated. Th-pba-0D exhibits rather unique reversible radiochromism upon alternating X-ray and UV irradiation. Moreover, the millimeter scale crystal size of Th-pba-0D renders the penetration depth of X-ray visible to naked eye and leads to the unearthing of its high X-ray attenuation efficiency. Indeed, the shielding efficacy of Th-pba-0D is comparable to that of lead glass containing 40% PbO, and a Th-pba-0D pellet with a thickness of merely 1.2 mm can shield 99.73% X-ray (16 keV). These studies portend the possible utilization of thorium-bearing materials as a bifunctional platform for radiation detection and shielding.

A robust thorium-organic framework as a bifunctional platform for iodine adsorption and Cr(VI) sensitization

Simple synthetic modulation based on thorium nitrate and tris((4-carboxyl)phenylduryl)amine (H₃TCBPA) gives rise to a new thorium-based metal-organic framework, Th-TCBPA, which features excellent hydrolytic and thermal stabilities. Incorporating electron-rich TCBPA^3- linkers not only endows Th-TCBPA with high adsorption capacity toward radioiodine vapor, but also makes it a luminescence sensor for the highly sensitive and selective detection of Cr(VI) anions.

f-block MOFs: A Pathway to Heterometallic Transuranics

A novel series of heterometallic f-block-frameworks including the first examples of transuranic heterometallic ²³⁸ U/²³⁹ Pu-metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and a novel monometallic ²³⁹ Pu-analog are reported. In combination with theoretical calculations, we probed the kinetics and thermodynamics of heterometallic actinide(An)-MOF formation and reported the first value of a U-to-Th transmetallation rate. We concluded that formation of uranyl species could be a driving force for solid-state metathesis. Density of states near the Fermi edge, enthalpy of formation, band gap, proton affinity, and thermal/chemical stability were probed as a function of metal ratios. Furthermore, we achieved 97 % of the theoretical maximum capacity for An-integration. These studies shed light on fundamental aspects of actinide chemistry and also foreshadow avenues for the development of emerging classes of An-containing materials, including radioisotope thermoelectric generators or metalloradiopharmaceuticals.

Creating High-Number Defect Sites through a Bimetal Approach in Metal-Organic Frameworks for Boosting Trace SO2 Removal

Herein, we represent a bimetallic approach to enhance the defect number, leading to eight defect sites per node in a metal-organic framework, showing both a higher SO₂ adsorption capacity and higher SO₂/CO₂ selectivity. The results can be further strongly supported by density functional theory calculations.

Achieving High Photo/Thermocatalytic Product Selectivity and Conversion via Thorium Clusters with Switchable Functional Ligands

Structural exploration and functional application of thorium clusters are still very rare on account of their difficult synthesis caused by the susceptible hydrolysis of thorium element. In this work, we elaborately designed and constructed four stable thorium clusters modified with different functionalized capping ligands, Th₆-MA, Th₆-BEN, Th₆-C8A, and Th₆-Fcc, which possessed nearly the same hexanuclear thorium-oxo core but different capabilities in light absorption and charge separation. Consequently, for the first time, these new thorium clusters were treated as model catalysts to systematically investigate the light-induced oxidative coupling reaction of benzylamine and thermodriven oxidation of aniline, achieving >90% product selectivity and approximately 100% conversion, respectively. Concurrently, we found that thorium clusters modified by switchable functional ligands can effectively modulate the selectivity and conversion of catalytic reaction products. Moreover, catalytic characterization and density functional theory calculations consistently indicated that these thorium clusters can activate O₂/H₂O₂ to generate active intermediates O₂^·-/HOO^· and then improved the conversion of amines efficiently. Significantly, this work represents the first report of stable thorium clusters applied to photo/thermotriggered catalytic reactions and puts forward a new design avenue for the construction of more efficient thorium cluster catalysts.

Energetic Systematics of Metal-Organic Frameworks: A Case Study of Al(III)-Trimesate MOF Isomers

Thermal stability and thermodynamic properties of aluminum(III)-1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate (Al-BTC) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), including MIL-96, MIL-100, and MIL-110, have been investigated through a suite of calorimetric and X-ray techniques. In situ high-temperature X-ray diffraction (HT-XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis coupled with differential scanning calorimetry (TGA-DSC) revealed that these MOFs undergo thermal amorphization prior to ligand combustion. Thermal stabilities of Al-BTC MOFs follow the increasing order MIL-110 < MIL-96 < MIL-100, based on estimated amorphization temperatures. Their thermodynamic stabilities were directly measured by high-temperature drop combustion calorimetry. Normalized (per mole of Al) enthalpies of formation (ΔH*_f) of MIL-96, MIL-100, and MIL-110 from Al₂O_3, H₃BTC, and H₂O (only Al₂O₃ and H₃BTC for MIL-100) were determined to be -56.9 ± 13.7, -36.2 ± 17.9, and 62.8 ± 11.6 kJ/mol·Al, respectively. Our results demonstrate that MIL-96 and MIL-100 are thermodynamically favorable, while MIL-110 is metastable, in agreement with thermal and hydrothermal stability trends. The enthalpic preferences of MIL-96 and MIL-100 may be attributed to their shared trinuclear μ³-oxo-bridged (Al₃(μ₃-O)) secondary building units (SBUs) promoting stabilization of Al polyhedra by the ligands within these frameworks, in comparison to the sterically strained Al₈ octamer cluster cores formed in MIL-110. Furthermore, similar ΔH*_f of MIL-96 and MIL-100 explain their concurrent formation as physical mixtures often encountered during synthesis, implying the importance of kinetic factors that may facilitate the formation of Al-BTC framework isomers. More importantly, the normalized formation enthalpies of Al-BTC MOF isomers follow a negative correlation with the ratio of charged coordinated substituents to linkers (normalized per mole of Al within the MOF formula unit), with enthalpic preference given to systems with smaller (O^2- + OH^-)/ligand ratios. This trend has been successfully extended to the previously measured ΔH*_f of several Zn₄O-based frameworks (e.g., MOF-5, MOF-5(DEF), MOF-177, UMCM-1), all of which have been found to be metastable with respect to their dense phases (ZnO, H₂O, and ligands). The result suggests that carboxylate MOFs with higher metal coordination environments attain more enthalpic stabilization from the coordinated ligands. Thus, the formation of some lanthanide/actinide, transition metal, and main group carboxylate frameworks may be energetically more favored, which, however, requires further studies.

Capture Instead of Release: Defect-Modulated Radionuclide Leaching Kinetics in Metal-Organic Frameworks

Comparison of defect-controlled leaching-kinetics modulation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and porous functionalized silica-based materials was performed on the example of a radionuclide and radionuclide surrogate for the first time, revealing an unprecedented readsorption phenomenon. On a series of zirconium-based MOFs as model systems, we demonstrated the ability to capture and retain >99% of the transuranic ²⁴¹Am radionuclide after 1 week of storage. We report the possibility of tailoring radionuclide release kinetics in MOFs through framework defects as a function of postsynthetically installed organic ligands including cation-chelating crown ether-based linkers. Based on comprehensive analysis using spectroscopy (EXAFS, UV-vis, FTIR, and NMR), X-ray crystallography (single crystal and powder), and theoretical calculations (nine kinetics models and structure simulations), we demonstrated the synergy of radionuclide integration methods, topological restrictions, postsynthetic scaffold modification, and defect engineering. This combination is inaccessible in any other material and highlights the advantages of using well-defined frameworks for gaining fundamental knowledge necessary for the advancement of actinide-based material development, providing a pathway for addressing upcoming challenges in the nuclear waste administration sector.

Recent advances in the applications of thorium-based metal-organic frameworks and molecular clusters

This perspective highlights the recent advances in the structural and practical aspects of thorium-based metal-organic frameworks (Th-MOFs) and molecular clusters. Thorium, as an underexplored actinide, features surprisingly rich coordination geometries and accessibility of the 5f orbital. These features lead to a myriad of topologies and electronic structures, many of which are undocumented for other tetravalent metal-containing MOFs or clusters. Moreover, Th-MOFs inherit the modularity, structural tunability, porosity, and versatile functionality of the state-of-the-art MOFs. Recognizing the radioactive nature of these thorium-bearing materials that may limit their practical uses, Th-MOFs and Th-clusters still have great potential for various applications, including radionuclide sequestration, hydrocarbon storage/separation, radiation detection, photoswitch, CO₂ conversion, photocatalysis, and electrocatalysis. The objective of this updated perspective is to propose pathways for the renaissance of interest in thorium-based materials.

Multi-step Phase Transformation from Metal-Organic Frameworks to Inorganic Compounds for High-Purity Th(IV) Generation

The generation of high-purity thorium is the precondition for next-generation nuclear energy; however, this remains a challenging task. To this end, we present herein an ultrasimple technique with the combination of crystallization plus phase transformation. Crystallization into ECUT-68 is found to show almost 100% selective uptake of Th(IV) over rare earth and UO₂²⁺ ions, while multistep phase transformation from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to inorganic compounds is found to directly generate inorganic Th(IV) compound and then Th(IV) solution, suggesting its superior application in the generation of high-purity thorium.

A Structure-Activity Study of Aromatic Acid Modulators for the Synthesis of Zirconium-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks

Acid modulation is among the most widely employed methods for preparing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that are both stable and highly crystalline, yet there exist few guiding principles for selecting the optimal modulator for a given system. Using the Zr-based MOFs UiO-66 and UiO-68-Me₂ (UiO = Universitetet i Oslo) as representative materials, here we present for the first time an in-depth structure-activity study of acid modulators and identify key principles of modulation for the synthesis of highly crystalline Zr-MOFs. By applying whole pattern fitting of powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) patterns as a technique for evaluating modulator efficacy, complemented by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), ¹H NMR, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), we demonstrate that the key to effective modulation is competition between the linker and modulator for coordination to the Zr secondary building units (SBUs). Specifically, we illustrate that a close match in pK _a and structure between the linker and modulator favors larger and more well-defined crystallites, particularly with sterically unhindered aromatic acid modulators. Based on our findings, we demonstrate that 5-membered heteroaromatic carboxylic acids are among the most efficient acid modulators identified to date for the synthesis of several representative Zr-MOFs with fcu net topologies. In addition, we find that coordination modulation is superior to exogenous acid modulation at higher modulator concentrations. Finally, we compare ¹H NMR and TGA as data-driven methods for quantifying linker deficiencies in modulated MOF syntheses. The guiding principles established herein have critical implications for the scalable and controllable synthesis of highly crystalline and stable MOFs relevant to chemical separations, gas storage, and catalysis.

2-Dimensional rare earth metal–organic frameworks based on a hexanuclear secondary building unit as efficient detectors for vapours of nitroaromatics and volatile organic compounds

A new family of microporous 2-dimensional rare earth metal organic frameworks based on a hexanuclear secondary building unit with capability to selectively detect vapours of volatile organic compounds and nitroaromatic explosives is reported.

A cationic thorium-organic framework with triple single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation peculiarities for ultrasensitive anion recognition

Single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation of metal-organic frameworks has been met with great interest, as it allows for the creation of new materials in a stepwise manner and direct visualization of structural transitions when subjected to external stimuli. However, it remains a peculiarity among numerous metal-organic frameworks, particularly for the ones constructed from tetravalent metal cations. Herein, we present a cationic thorium-organic framework displaying unprecedented triple single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformations in organic solvents, water, and NaIO3 solution. Notably, both the interpenetration conversion and topological change driven by the SC-SC transformation have remained elusive for thorium-organic frameworks. Moreover, the single-crystal-to-single-crystal transition in NaIO3 solution can efficiently and selectively turn the ligand-based emission off, leading to the lowest limit of detection (0.107 μg kg-1) of iodate, one of the primary species of long-lived fission product 129I in aqueous medium, among all luminescent sensors.

Tuning and Directing Energy Transfer in the Whole Visible Spectrum through Linker Installation in Metal-Organic Frameworks

While limited choice of emissive organic linkers with systematic emission tunability presents a great challenge to investigate energy transfer (ET) over the whole visible light range with designable directions, luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs) may serve as an ideal platform for such study due to their tunable structure and composition. Herein, five Zr₆ cluster-based LMOFs, HIAM-400X (X=0, 1, 2, 3, 4) are prepared using 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole and its derivative-based tetratopic carboxylic acids as organic linkers. The accessible unsaturated metal sites confer HIAM-400X as a pristine scaffold for linker installation. Six full-color emissive 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole and its derivative-based dicarboxylic acids (L) were successfully installed into HIAM-400X matrix to form HIAM-400X-L, in which the ET can be facilely tuned by controlling its direction, either from the inserted linkers to pristine MOFs or from the pristine MOFs to inserted linkers, and over the whole range of visible light. The combination of the pristine MOFs and the second linkers via linker installation creates a powerful two-dimensional space in tuning the emission via ET in LMOFs.

Unveiling the Unique Roles of Metal Coordination and Modulator in the Polymorphism Control of Metal-Organic Frameworks

Polymorphism control of metal-organic frameworks is highly desired for elucidating structure-property relationships, but remains an empirical process and is usually done in a trial-and-error approach. We adopted the rarely used actinide cation Th⁴⁺ and a ditopic linker to construct a series of thorium-organic frameworks (TOFs) with a range of polymorphs. The extraordinary coordination versatility of Th⁴⁺ cations and clusters, coupled with synthetic modulation, gives five distinct phases, wherein the highest degree of interpenetration (threefold) and porosity (75.9 %) of TOFs have been achieved. Notably, the O atom on the capping site of the nine-coordinated Th⁴⁺ cation can function as a bridging unit to interconnect neighboring secondary building units (SBUs), affording topologies that are undocumented for other tetravalent-metal-containing MOFs. Furthermore, for the first time HCOOH has been demonstrated as a bridging unit of SBUs to further induce structural complexity. The resulting TOFs exhibit considerably different adsorption behaviors toward organic dyes, thus suggesting that TOFs represent an exceptional and promising platform for structure-property relationship study.

Emergence of a thorium-organic framework as a radiation attenuator for selective X-ray dosimetry

By first applying a thorium-organic framework (Th-SINAP-2) as a radiation attenuator and by incorporating a terpyridine derivative (Htpbz) as a photo-responsive guest, selective photochromism in response to X-rays was achieved in the host-guest assembly of Htpbz@Th-SINAP-2. Such a combination endows the afforded material with the lowest detection limit of X-ray dose among all photochromic sensors and a brand-new function of X-ray dosimetry for thorium containing materials.

Conductive Metal-Organic Frameworks: Electronic Structure and Electrochemical Applications

Smarter and minimization of devices are consistently substantial to shape the energy landscape. Significant amounts of endeavours have come forward as promising steps to surmount this formidable challenge. It is undeniable that material scientists were contemplating smarter material beyond purely inorganic or organic materials. To our delight, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), an inorganic-organic hybrid scaffold with unprecedented tunability and smart functionalities, have recently started their journey as an alternative. In this review, we focus on such propitious potential of MOFs that was untapped over a long time. We cover the synthetic strategies and (or) post-synthetic modifications towards the formation of conductive MOFs and their underlying concepts of charge transfer with structural aspects. We addressed theoretical calculations with the experimental outcomes and spectroelectrochemistry, which will trigger vigorous impetus about intrinsic electronic behaviour of the conductive frameworks. Finally, we discussed electrocatalysts and energy storage devices stemming from conductive MOFs to meet energy demand in the near future.

An Azobenzene-Modified Photoresponsive Thorium-Organic Framework: Monitoring and Quantitative Analysis of Reversible trans-cis Photoisomerization

Monitoring and quantification of the photoresponsive behavior of metal-organic frameworks that respond to a light stimulus are crucial to establish a clear structure-activity relationship related to light regulation. Herein, we report the first azobenzene-modified photoresponsive thorium-organic framework (Th-Azo-MOF) with the formula [Th₆O₄(OH)₄(H₂O)₆L₆] (H₂L = (E)-2'-p-tolyldiazenyl-1,1':4',4'-terphenyl-4,4″-dicarboxylic acid), in which the utilization of a thorium cluster as a metal node leads to one of the largest pore sizes among all the azobenzene-containing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The phototriggered transformation of the trans isomer to the cis isomer is monitored and characterized quantitatively by comprehensive analyses of NMR and UV spectroscopy, which reveals that the maximum isomerization ratio of ^cisTh-Azo-MOF in the solid state is 19.7% after irradiation for 120 min, and this isomerization is reversible and can be repeated several times without apparent performance changes. Moreover, the isomerization-related difference in the adsorption of the Rhodamine B guest is also illustrated and a possible photoregulated mechanism is proposed. This work will shed light on new explorations for constructing functionalized actinide porous materials by the elegant combination of actinide nodes with tailored organic ligands and furthermore will provide a comprehensive understanding of photoisomerization processes in MOF solids and insight into the mechanism on photoregulated cargo adsorption and release by photoactive MOFs.

Visible colorimetric dosimetry of UV and ionizing radiations by a dual-module photochromic nanocluster

Radiation dosimeters displaying conspicuous response of irradiance are highly desirable, owing to the growing demand of monitoring high-energy radiation and environmental exposure. Herein, we present a case of dosimetry based on a discrete nanocluster, [Th6(OH)4(O)4(H2O)6](TPC)8(HCOO)4∙4DMF∙H2O (Th-SINAP-100), by judiciously incorporating heavy Th6 polynuclear centers as radiation attenuator and organic linkers as photo-responsive sensor. Interestingly, dual-module photochromic transitions upon multiple external stimuli including UV, β-ray, and γ-ray are integrated into this single material. The striking color change, and more significantly, the visible color transition of luminescence in response to accumulating radiation dose allow an on-site quantitative platform for naked-eye detection of ionization radiations over a broad range (1-80 kGy). Single crystal X-ray diffraction and density functional theory calculations reveal that the dual-module photochromism can be attributed to the π(TPC) → π*(TPC) intermolecular charge transfer driven by enhanced π-π stacking interaction between the adjacent TPC moieties upon irradiation.

Beyond structural motifs: the frontier of actinide-containing metal-organic frameworks

In this perspective, we feature recent advances in the field of actinide-containing metal-organic frameworks (An-MOFs) with a main focus on their electronic, catalytic, photophysical, and sorption properties. This discussion deviates from a strictly crystallographic analysis of An-MOFs, reported in several reviews, or synthesis of novel structural motifs, and instead delves into the remarkable potential of An-MOFs for evolving the nuclear waste administration sector. Currently, the An-MOF field is dominated by thorium- and uranium-containing structures, with only a few reports on transuranic frameworks. However, some of the reported properties in the field of An-MOFs foreshadow potential implementation of these materials and are the main focus of this report. Thus, this perspective intends to provide a glimpse into the challenges, triumphs, and future directions of An-MOFs in sectors ranging from the traditional realm of gas sorption and separation to recently emerging areas such as electronics and photophysics.

Evaluating the Robustness of Metal-Organic Frameworks for Synthetic Chemistry

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are emerging as sustainable reagents and catalysts with promising applications in synthetic chemistry. Although the hydrothermal stabilities of MOFs have been well studied, their robustness toward various reagents, including acids, bases, nucleophiles, electrophiles, oxidants, and reductants, remains poorly characterized. As such, heterogeneous platforms for promising catalysts are generally identified on an ad hoc basis and have largely been limited to carboxylate frameworks to date. To address these limitations, here we systematically characterize the robustness of 17 representative carboxylate, salicylate, and azolate MOFs toward 30 conditions representing the scope of synthetic organic chemistry. Specifically, analysis of the full width at half-maximum of powder X-ray diffraction patterns, as well as infrared spectroscopy, 77 K N2 adsorption measurements, and scanning electron microscopy in select cases are employed to appraise framework degradation and dissolution under a range of representative conditions. Our studies demonstrate that azolate MOFs, such as Fe2(bdp)3 (bdp2- = 4,4'-(1,4-phenylene)bis(pyrazolate)), generally possess excellent chemical stabilities under myriad conditions. In addition, we find that carboxylate and salicylate frameworks possess complementary stabilities, with carboxylate MOFs possessing superior robustness toward acids, electrophiles, and oxidants, and salicylate MOFs demonstrating improved robustness toward bases, nucleophiles, and reductants. The guidelines provided herein should facilitate the rational design of robust frameworks for applications in synthetic chemistry and guide the development of new strategies for the postsynthetic modification of MOFs as well.

Heterometallic Actinide-Containing Photoresponsive Metal-Organic Frameworks: Dynamic and Static Tuning of Electronic Properties

Acquiring fundamental knowledge of properties of actinide-based materials is a necessary step to create new possibilities for addressing the current challenges in the nuclear energy and nuclear waste sectors. In this report, we established a photophysics-electronics correlation for actinide-containing metal-organic frameworks (An-MOFs) as a function of excitation wavelength, for the first time. A stepwise approach for dynamically modulating electronic properties was applied for the first time towards actinide-based heterometallic MOFs through integration of photochromic linkers. Optical cycling, modeling of density of states near the Fermi edge, conductivity measurements, and photoisomerization kinetics were employed to shed light on the process of tailoring optoelectronic properties of An-MOFs. Furthermore, the first photochromic MOF-based field-effect transistor, in which the field-effect response could be changed through light exposure, was constructed. As a demonstration, the change in current upon light exposure was sufficient to operate a two-LED fail-safe indicator circuit.

Interpenetration Control in Thorium Metal-Organic Frameworks: Structural Complexity toward Iodine Adsorption

The rational design and synthesis of metal-organic frameworks with well-controlled interpenetration have been active research areas of inquiry, particularly for porosity-related applications. Herein, we extend the use of the ligand steric modulation strategy to initiate the first study of the interpenetration control of thorium-based MOFs. The approximate "hardness" of the Th⁴⁺ cation, which was conjugated with aromatic substitutions and delicately modified synthetic conditions, allows for the crystallization of single crystals of seven new Th-MOFs with five distinct topologies. Solvothermal reactions of Th(NO₃)₄ with the triphenyl H₂TPDC ligand under variable conditions exclusively gave rise to an interpenetrated Th-MOF with a hex topology, namely Th-SINAP-16. Modifications of the ligand sterics with two pendant methyl groups to 2',5'-Me₂TPDC^2- and 2,2″-Me₂TPDC^2- afforded two noninterpenetrated UiO-68-type Th-MOFs (Th-SINAP-17 and Th-SINAP-20, respectively) with record-high pore volumes (74.8% and 75.3%, respectively) among all the thorium MOFs. Moreover, another four Th-MOFs Th-SINAP-n (n = 18, 19, 21, and 22) with three different topologies were obtained by a simple synthetic modulation. Notably, Th-SINAP-16 and Th-SINAP-21 represent the second rare examples of interpenetrated Th-MOFs reported to date. These findings revealed the unprecedented structural complexity and synthetic accessibility of Th-MOFs among all tetravalent metal containing MOFs. Such features make Th-MOFs as an ideal platform to elucidate the structure-property relationship for various applications, e.g. iodine adsorption.

Achieving UV and X-ray Dual Photochromism in a Metal-Organic Hybrid via Structural Modulation

Rational design and synthesis of new photochromic sensors have been active research areas of inquiry, particularly on how to predict and tailor their properties and functionalities. Herein, two thulium 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine-4'-carboxylate (TPC)-functionalized metal-organic hybrids, Tm(TPC)₂(HCOO)(H₂O) (TmTPC-1) and Tm(TPC)(HCOO)₂ (TmTPC-2) with different photochromic response behaviors, have been successfully prepared, allowing for straightforward investigations of the structure-property correlation. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction and electron paramagnetic resonance analyses revealed that the incorporation of a unique dangling decorating TPC unit in TmTPC-1 offers a shorter and more accessible π-π interaction pathway between the adjacent TPC moieties than that in TmTPC-2. Such a structural feature leads to the production of radical species via a photoinduced intermolecular electron-transfer (IeMCT) process upon UV or X-ray irradiation, which ultimately endows TmTPC-1 with a rather unusual UV and X-ray dual photochromism. A linear relationship between the change of UV-vis absorbance intensity and X-ray dose was established, making TmTPC-1 a promising dosimeter for X-ray radiation with an extremely high energy threshold (30 kGy). To advance the development for real-world application, we have fabricated polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes incorporating TmTPC-1 for functioning either as a UV imager or as an X-ray radiation indicator. Lastly, TmTPC-1 exhibits high thermal stability (up to 400 °C) and radioresistance (at least 900 kGy), and also excellent reversibility of photochromic transformation (at least 5 cycles).

Programmable Triboelectric Nanogenerators Dependent on the Secondary Building Units in Cadmium Coordination Polymers

Precisely controlling the coordination microenvironment and electronic features of polynuclear secondary building units (SBUs) in coordination polymers (CPs) is an efficient approach to governing their fundamental performance. Here, different multinuclear SBUs (binuclear, trinuclear, and pentanuclear SBUs for 1-3, respectively) were introduced into Cd-based CPs, which were used as frictional electrode materials, to clarify the contributions of polynuclear Cd-SBUs through the output of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs). The results demonstrated that 1-TENG with binuclear Cd-SBUs possessed the highest output, whereas 3-TENG with the pentanuclear Cd-SBUs indicated the minimum output, suggesting that the binuclear Cd-SBUs in 1 lost electrons most readily and generated much more charge, which was further confirmed by density functional theory calculations. This work opened a new prospect to confirm the gaining/losing capability of polynuclear Cd-SBUs in CPs and provided an effective approach to tuning both the stability and functionality of polynuclear CPs as frictional pair materials to regulate the output of CPs-based TENGs.

Rational Design of a Uranyl Metal-Organic Framework for the Capture and Colorimetric Detection of Organic Dyes

A new uranyl containing metal-organic framework, RPL-1: [(UO₂)₂(C₂₈H₁₈O₈)] ^. H₂O (RPL for Radiochemical Processing Laboratory), was prepared, structurally characterized, and the solid-state photoluminescence properties explored. Single crystal X-ray diffraction data reveals the structure of RPL-1 consists of two crystallographically unique three dimensional, interpenetrating nets with a 4,3-connected tbo topology. Each net contains large pores with an average width of 22.8 Å and is formed from monomeric, hexagonal bipyramidal uranyl nodes that are linked via 1,2,4,5-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)benzene (TCPB) ligands. The thermal and photophysical properties of RPL-1 were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis and absorbance, fluorescence, and lifetime spectroscopies. The material displays excellent thermal stability and temperature dependent uranyl and TCPB luminescence. The framework is stable in aqueous media and due to the large void space (constituting 76 % of the unit cell by volume) can sequester organic dyes, the uptake of which induces a visible change to the color of the material.

Metal-Organic Frameworks Based on Group 3 and 4 Metals

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on group 3 and 4 metals are considered as the most promising MOFs for varying practical applications including water adsorption, carbon conversion, and biomedical applications. The relatively strong coordination bonds and versatile coordination modes within these MOFs endow the framework with high chemical stability, diverse structures and topologies, and interesting properties and functions. Herein, the significant progress made on this series of MOFs since 2018 is summarized and an update on the current status and future trends on the structural design of robust MOFs with high connectivity is provided. Cluster chemistry involving Y, lanthanides (Ln, from La to Lu), actinides (An, from Ac to Lr), Ti, and Zr is initially introduced. This is followed by a review of recently developed MOFs based on group 3 and 4 metals with their structures discussed based on the types of inorganic or organic building blocks. The novel properties and arising applications of these MOFs in catalysis, adsorption and separation, delivery, and sensing are highlighted. Overall, this review is expected to provide a timely summary on MOFs based on group 3 and 4 metals, which shall guide the future discovery and development of stable and functional MOFs for practical applications.

Destruction of Metal-Organic Frameworks: Positive and Negative Aspects of Stability and Lability

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), constructed from organic linkers and inorganic building blocks, are well-known for their high crystallinity, high surface areas, and high component tunability. The stability of MOFs is a key prerequisite for their potential practical applications in areas including storage, separation, catalysis, and biomedicine since it is essential to guarantee the framework integrity during utilization. However, MOFs are prone to destruction under external stimuli, considerably hampering their commercialization. In this Review, we provide an overview of the situations where MOFs undergo destruction due to external stimuli such as chemical, thermal, photolytic, radiolytic, electronic, and mechanical factors and offer guidelines to avoid unwanted degradation happened to the framework. Furthermore, we discuss possible destruction mechanisms and their varying derived products. In particular, we highlight cases that utilize MOF instability to fabricate varying materials including hierarchically porous MOFs, monolayer MOF nanosheets, amorphous MOF liquids and glasses, polymers, metal nanoparticles, metal carbide nanoparticles, and carbon materials. Finally, we provide a perspective on the utilization of MOF destruction to develop advanced materials with a superior hierarchy for various applications.

Heterometallic multinuclear nodes directing MOF electronic behavior

Metal node engineering in combination with modularity, topological diversity, and porosity of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) could advance energy and optoelectronic sectors. In this study, we focus on MOFs with multinuclear heterometallic nodes for establishing metal−property trends, i.e., connecting atomic scale changes with macroscopic material properties by utilization of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, conductivity measurements, X-ray photoelectron and diffuse reflectance spectroscopies, and density functional theory calculations. The results of Bader charge analysis and studies employing the Voronoi–Dirichlet partition of crystal structures are also presented. As an example of frameworks with different nodal arrangements, we have chosen MOFs with mononuclear, binuclear, and pentanuclear nodes, primarily consisting of first-row transition metals, that are incorporated in HHTP-, BTC-, and NIP-systems, respectively (HHTP³⁻ = triphenylene-2,3,6,7,10,11-hexaone; BTC³⁻ = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate; and NIP²⁻ = 5-nitroisophthalate). Through probing framework electronic profiles, we demonstrate structure–property relationships, and also highlight the necessity for both comprehensive analysis of trends in metal properties, and novel avenues for preparation of heterometallic multinuclear isoreticular structures, which are critical components for on-demand tailoring of properties in heterometallic systems.

Supramolecular Assembly of U(IV) Clusters and Superatoms with Unconventional Countercations

Superatoms are nanometer-sized molecules or particles that form ordered lattices, mimicking their atomic counterparts. Hierarchical assembly of superatoms gives rise to emergent properties in lattices of quantum dots, p-block clusters, and fullerenes. Here, we introduce a family of uranium-oxysulfate cluster anions whose hierarchical assembly in water is controlled by two parameters: acidity and the lanthanide or transition-metal countercation. In acid, larger Ln^III (Ln = La-Ho) link hexamer (U₆) oxoclusters into body-centered cubic frameworks, while smaller Ln^III (Ln = Er-Lu and Y) promote linking of 14 U₆ clusters into hollow superclusters (U₈₄ superatoms). U₈₄ assembles into superlattices including cubic-closest packed, body-centered cubic, and interpenetrating networks, bridged by interstitial countercations and U₆ clusters. Divalent transition metals (TM = Mn^II and Zn^II) charge-balance and promote the fusion of 10 U₆ and 10 U monomers into a wheel-shaped cluster (U₇₀). Dissolution of U₇₀ in organic media reveals (by small-angle X-ray scattering) that differing supramolecular assemblies are accessed, controlled by TM^II-linking of U₇₀ clusters. Magnetic measurements of these assemblies reveal Curie-Weiss behavior at high temperatures, without pairing of the 5f²-electrons down to 2 K.

Structural properties of ultra-small thorium and uranium dioxide nanoparticles embedded in a covalent organic framework

We report the structural properties of ultra-small ThO2 and UO2 nanoparticles (NPs), which were synthesized without strong binding surface ligands by employing a covalent organic framework (COF-5) as an inert template. The resultant NPs were used to observe how structural properties are affected by decreasing grain size within bulk actinide oxides, which has implications for understanding the behavior of nuclear fuel materials. Through a comprehensive characterization strategy, we gain insight regarding how structure at the NP surface differs from the interior. Characterization using electron microscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering indicates that growth of the ThO2 and UO2 NPs was confined by the pores of the COF template, resulting in sub-3 nm particles. X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy results indicate that the NPs are best described as ThO2 and UO2 materials with unpassivated surfaces. The surface layers of these particles compensate for high surface energy by exhibiting a broader distribution of Th-O and U-O bond distances despite retaining average bond lengths that are characteristic of bulk ThO2 and UO2. The combined synthesis and physical characterization efforts provide a detailed picture of actinide oxide structure at the nanoscale, which remains highly underexplored compared to transition metal counterparts.

Electrically Conductive Metal-Organic Frameworks

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are intrinsically porous extended solids formed by coordination bonding between organic ligands and metal ions or clusters. High electrical conductivity is rare in MOFs, yet it allows for diverse applications in electrocatalysis, charge storage, and chemiresistive sensing, among others. In this Review, we discuss the efforts undertaken so far to achieve efficient charge transport in MOFs. We focus on four common strategies that have been harnessed toward high conductivities. In the “through-bond” approach, continuous chains of coordination bonds between the metal centers and ligands’ functional groups create charge transport pathways. In the “extended conjugation” approach, the metals and entire ligands form large delocalized systems. The “through-space” approach harnesses the π–π stacking interactions between organic moieties. The “guest-promoted” approach utilizes the inherent porosity of MOFs and host–guest interactions. Studies utilizing less defined transport pathways are also evaluated. For each approach, we give a systematic overview of the structures and transport properties of relevant materials. We consider the benefits and limitations of strategies developed thus far and provide an overview of outstanding challenges in conductive MOFs.
