On-Surface Synthesis of Highly Ordered Covalent Sierpiński Triangle Fractals

Surface-supported metal-organic frameworks with geometric topological diversity via scanning tunneling microscopy

Surface-supported metal-organic frameworks (SMOFs) are long-range ordered periodic 2D lattice layers formed by inorganic metal nodes and organic ligands via coordination bonds on substrate surfaces. The atomic resolution STM lays a solid foundation for the conception and construction of SMOFs with large area, stable structure, and special function. In this review, the cutting-edge research of SMOFs from design strategy, preparation process, and how to accurately achieve structural and functional diversity are reviewed. Furthermore, we focus on the design and construction of novel and fascinating periodic and fractal structures, in which some typical honeycomb structures, Kagome lattice, hexagonal geometry, and Sierpiński triangles are summarized, and the related prospects for designing functional nanoscale systems and architectures are prospected. Finally, the challenges faced in the design and synthesis of SMOFs are denoted, and the application prospect and development trend of SMOFs are forecasted based on the current research status.

Topology selectivity of a conformationally flexible precursor through selenium doping

Conformational arrangements within nanostructures play a crucial role in shaping the overall configuration and determining the properties, for example in covalent/metal organic frameworks. In on-surface synthesis, conformational diversity often leads to uncontrollable or disordered structures. Therefore, the exploration of controlling and directing the conformational arrangements is significant in achieving desired nanoarchitectures. Herein, a conformationally flexible precursor 2,4,6-tris(3-bromophenyl)-1,3,5-triazine is employed, and a random phase consisting of C3h and Cs conformers is firstly obtained after deposition of the precursor on Cu(111) at room temperature to 365 K. At low coverage (0.01 ML) selenium doping, we achieve the selectivity of the C3h conformer and improve the nanopore structural homogeneity. The ordered two-dimensional metal organic nanostructure can be fulfilled by selenium doping from room temperature to 365 K. The formation of the conformationally flexible precursor on Cu(111) is explored through the combination of high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy and non-contact atomic force microscopy. The regulation of energy diagrams in the absence or presence of the Se atom is revealed by density functional theory calculations. These results can enrich the on-surface synthesis toolbox of conformationally flexible precursors, for the design of complex nanoarchitectures, and for future development of engineered nanomaterials.

Emergence of fractal geometries in the evolution of a metabolic enzyme

Fractals are patterns that are self-similar across multiple length-scales1. Macroscopic fractals are common in nature2-4; however, so far, molecular assembly into fractals is restricted to synthetic systems5-12. Here we report the discovery of a natural protein, citrate synthase from the cyanobacterium Synechococcus elongatus, which self-assembles into Sierpiński triangles. Using cryo-electron microscopy, we reveal how the fractal assembles from a hexameric building block. Although different stimuli modulate the formation of fractal complexes and these complexes can regulate the enzymatic activity of citrate synthase in vitro, the fractal may not serve a physiological function in vivo. We use ancestral sequence reconstruction to retrace how the citrate synthase fractal evolved from non-fractal precursors, and the results suggest it may have emerged as a harmless evolutionary accident. Our findings expand the space of possible protein complexes and demonstrate that intricate and regulatable assemblies can evolve in a single substitution.

Surface-dominant micro/nanofluidics for efficient green energy conversion

Green energy conversion in aqueous systems has attracted considerable interest owing to the sustainable clean energy demand resulting from population and economic growth and urbanization, as well as the significant potential energy from water resources and other regenerative sources coupled with fluids. In particular, molecular motion based on intrinsic micro/nanofluidic phenomena at the liquid-solid interface (LSI) is crucial for efficient and sustainable green energy conversion. The electrical double layer is the main factor affecting transport, interaction between molecules and surfaces, non-uniform ion distribution, synthesis, stimulated reactions, and motion by external renewable resources in both closed nanoconfinement and open surfaces. In this review, we summarize the state-of-the-art progress in physical and chemical reaction-based green energy conversion in LSI, including nanoscale fabrication, key mechanisms, applications, and limitations for practical implementation. The prospects for resolving critical challenges in this field and inspiring other promising research areas in the infancy stage (studying chemical and biological dynamics at the single-molecule level and nanofluidic neuromorphic computing) are also discussed.

Assembling Surface Molecular Sierpiński Triangle Fractals via K+-Invoked Electrostatic Interaction

Molecular Sierpiński triangles (STs), a family of elegant and well-known fractals, can be prepared on surfaces with atomic precision. Up to date, several kinds of intermolecular interactions such as hydrogen bond, halogen bond, coordination, and even covalent bond have been employed to construct molecular STs on metal surfaces. Herein a series of defect-free molecular STs have been fabricated via electrostatic attraction between potassium cations and electronically polarized chlorine atoms in 4,4″-dichloro-1,1':3',1″-terphenyl (DCTP) molecules on Cu(111) and Ag(111). The electrostatic interaction is confirmed both experimentally by scanning tunneling microscopy and theoretically by density functional theory calculations. These findings illustrate that electrostatic interaction can serve as an efficient driving force to construct molecular fractals, which enriches our toolbox for the bottom-up fabrication of complex functional supramolecular nanostructures.

Two-Dimensional Crystal Transition from Radialene to Cumulene on Ag(111) via Retro-[2 + 1] Cycloaddition

Two-dimensional (2D) crystal-to-crystal transition is an important method in crystal engineering because of its ability to directly create diverse crystal materials from one crystal. However, steering a 2D single-layer crystal-to-crystal transition on surfaces with high chemo- and stereoselectivity under ultra-high vacuum conditions is a great challenge because the transition is a complex dynamic process. Here, we report a highly chemoselective 2D crystal transition from radialene to cumulene with retention of stereoselectivity on Ag(111) via retro-[2 + 1] cycloaddition of three-membered carbon rings and directly visualize the transition process involving a stepwise epitaxial growth mechanism by the combination of scanning tunneling microscopy and non-contact atomic force microscopy. Using progression annealing, we found that isocyanides on Ag(111) at a low annealing temperature underwent sequential [1 + 1 + 1] cycloaddition and enantioselective molecular recognition based on C-H···Cl hydrogen bonding interactions to form 2D triaza[3]radialene crystals. In contrast, a higher annealing temperature induced the transformation of triaza[3]radialenes to generate trans-diaza[3]cumulenes, which were further assembled into 2D cumulene-based crystals through twofold N-Ag-N coordination and C-H···Cl hydrogen bonding interactions. By combining the observed distinct transient intermediates and density functional theory calculations, we demonstrate that the retro-[2 + 1] cycloaddition reaction proceeds via the ring opening of a three-membered carbon ring, sequential dechlorination/hydrogen passivation, and deisocyanation. Our findings provide new insights into the growth mechanism and dynamics of 2D crystals and have implications for controllable crystal engineering.

On-Surface Synthesis of Self-Assembled Covalently Linked Wavy Chains with Site-Selective Conformational Switching

Conformational arrangements in polymers on surfaces determine the overall shape as well as the potential properties. It is generally believed that conformational diversity leads to uncontrollable or disordered structures in on-surface synthesis. However, in this study, we obtain two well-ordered self-assembled covalently linked wavy chains with site-selective conformational switching via the Ullmann reaction of 1,2-bis(3-bromophenyl)ethane with multiple conformations on Ag(111). Two kinds of wavy chains exhibit distinct conformational arrangements, where chain I contains one repeating unit conformation of -cis-trans1-cis-trans1-cis-cis-trans1-, while the adjacent parallel parts in wavy chain II have two different conformational arrangements of -cis-cis-trans1- and -cis-cis-trans2-. Wavy chains coassemble with dissociated bromine atoms, suggesting that the Br···H-C interactions between Br atoms and molecular chains are crucial for the construction of ordered wavy chains. High-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy is employed to reveal the surface reaction process at the molecular scale. In depth growth mechanism analysis combined with density functional theory calculations unveils that the substrate also plays an important role in the fabrication of well-ordered wavy chains. The present work extends the surface reaction of conformational flexible precursors.

The Marriage of Sierpiński Triangles and Platonic Polyhedra

Fractal structures with self-similarity are of fundamental importance in the fields of aesthetic, chemistry and mathematics. Here, by taking advantage of constructs the rational geometry-directed precursor design, we report the construction of two fascinating Platonic solids, the Sierpiński tetrahedron ST-T and the Sierpiński octahedron ST-O, in which each possesses a fractal Sierpiński triangle on their independent faces. These two discrete complexes are formed in near-quantitative yield from the multi-component self-assembly of truncated Sierpiński triangular kernel L¹ with tribenzotriquinacene-based hexatopic and anthracene-based tetratopic terpyridine ligands (L³ and L⁴ ) in the presence of metal ions, respectively. The enhanced stabilities of the 3D discrete structures were investigated by gradient tandem mass spectrometry (gMS² ). This work provides new constructs for the imitation of complex virus assemblies and for the molecular encapsulation of giant guest molecules.

Engineering Polymeric Nanofluidic Membranes for Efficient Ionic Transport: Biomimetic Design, Material Construction, and Advanced Functionalities

Design elements extracted from biological ion channels guide the engineering of artificial nanofluidic membranes for efficient ionic transport and spawn biomimetic devices with great potential in many cutting-edge areas. In this context, polymeric nanofluidic membranes can be especially attractive because of their inherent flexibility and benign processability, which facilitate massive fabrication and facile device integration for large-scale applications. Herein, the state-of-the-art achievements of polymeric nanofluidic membranes are systematically summarized. Theoretical fundamentals underlying both biological and synthetic ion channels are introduced. The advances of engineering polymeric nanofluidic membranes are then detailed from aspects of structural design, material construction, and chemical functionalization, emphasizing their broad chemical and reticular/topological variety as well as considerable property tunability. After that, this Review expands on examples of evolving these polymeric membranes into macroscopic devices and their potentials in addressing compelling issues in energy conversion and storage systems where efficient ion transport is highly desirable. Finally, a brief outlook on possible future developments in this field is provided.

Crucial Role of Crystal Field on Determining the Evolution Process of Janus MoSSe Monolayer: A First-Principles Study

Two-dimensional Janus MXY materials have been successfully synthesized from their parent species by CVD, SEAR, or PLD techniques. However, their detailed evolution process and underlying atomistic mechanism are far from understood conclusively, which are prompts for further research. Here, taking Janus MoSSe as a representation, the evolution process from MoS₂ is systematically investigated by first-principles calculation. The simulation shows that the lowest formation energy of MoS_(2-δ)Se_δ increases with selenylation ratio δ. Unexpectedly, Se atoms prefer to form a pair in next-nearest neighboring state (Se-NN-Se), eventually transferred into a growth rule of (6n + 1) during the evolution process. Particularly, it is demonstrated that the stability of the intermediate is mainly governed by the Mo 4d orbitals in different distorted triangular crystal fields, rendering a different degree of orbital splitting. Both the occupied and unoccupied Mo 4d orbitals of Se-NN-Se are farther from the Fermi level than other cases, which is clearly illustrated by d-band center theory. These findings will be helpful to understand the evolution process and the underlying atomistic mechanism of Janus MXY.

Self-Assembly of a Bilayer 2D Supramolecular Organic Framework in Water

Accurate control of the layer number of orderly stacked 2D polymers has been an unsettled challenge in self-assembly. Herein we describe the fabrication of a bilayer 2D supramolecular organic framework from a monolayer 2D supramolecular organic framework in water by utilizing the cooperative coordination of a rod-like bipyridine ligands to zinc porphyrin subunits of the monolayer network. The monolayer supramolecular framework is prepared from the co-assembly of an octacationic zinc porphyrin monomer and cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) in water through CB[8]-encapsulation-promoted dimerization of 4-phenylpyridiunium subunits that the zinc porphyrin monomer bear. The bilayer 2D supramolecular organic framework exhibits structural regularity in both solution and the solid state, which is characterized by synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering and high-resolution transmission electron microscopic techniques. Atomic force microscopic imaging confirms that the bilayer character of the 2D supramolecular organic framework can be realized selectively on the micrometer scale.

Two-Dimensional Polymers and Polymerizations

Synthetic chemists have developed robust methods to synthesize discrete molecules, linear and branched polymers, and disordered cross-linked networks. However, two-dimensional polymers (2DPs) prepared from designed monomers have been long missing from these capabilities, both as objects of chemical synthesis and in nature. Recently, new polymerization strategies and characterization methods have enabled the unambiguous realization of covalently linked macromolecular sheets. Here we review 2DPs and 2D polymerization methods. Three predominant 2D polymerization strategies have emerged to date, which produce 2DPs either as monolayers or multilayer assemblies. We discuss the fundamental understanding and scope of each of these approaches, including: the bond-forming reactions used, the synthetic diversity of 2DPs prepared, their multilayer stacking behaviors, nanoscale and mesoscale structures, and macroscale morphologies. Additionally, we describe the analytical tools currently available to characterize 2DPs in their various isolated forms. Finally, we review emergent 2DP properties and the potential applications of planar macromolecules. Throughout, we highlight achievements in 2D polymerization and identify opportunities for continued study.

Steering Metal-Organic Network Structures through Conformations and Configurations on Surfaces

Molecular adsorption conformations and arrangement configurations on surfaces are important structural aspects of surface stereochemistry, but their roles in steering the structures of metal-organic networks (MONs) remain vague and unexplored. In this study, we constructed MONs by the coordination self-assembly of isocyanides on Cu(111) and Ag(111) surfaces and demonstrated that the MON structures can be steered by surface stereochemistry, including the adsorption conformations of the isocyanide molecules and the arrangement configurations of the coordination nodes and subunits. The coordination self-assembly of 1,4-phenylene diisocyanobenzene afforded a honeycomb MON consisting of 3-fold (isocyano)₃-Cu motifs on a Cu(111) surface. In contrast, geometrically different chevron-shaped 1,3-phenylene diisocyanobenzene (m-DICB) failed to generate a MON, which is ascribable to its standing conformation on the Cu(111) surface. However, m-DICB was adsorbed in a flat conformation on a Ag(111) surface, which has a larger lattice constant than a Cu(111) surface, and smoothly underwent coordination self-assembly to form a MON consisting of (isocyano)₃-Ag motifs. Interestingly, only C₃-Ag nodes with heterotactic configurations could grow into larger subunits; those subunits with heterotactic configurations further grew into Sierpiński triangle fractals (up to fourth order), while subunits with homotactic configurations afforded a triangular MON.

Controllable Synthesis and Performance Modulation of 2D Covalent-Organic Frameworks

Covalent-organic frameworks (COFs) are especially interesting and unique as their highly ordered topological structures entirely built from plentiful π-conjugated units through covalent bonds. Arranging tailorable organic building blocks into periodically reticular skeleton bestows predictable lattices and various properties upon COFs in respect of topology diagrams, pore size, properties of channel wall interfaces, etc. Indeed, these peculiar features in terms of crystallinity, conjugation degree, and topology diagrams fundamentally decide the applications of COFs including heterogeneous catalysis, energy conversion, proton conduction, light emission, and optoelectronic devices. Additionally, this research field has attracted widespread attention and is of importance with a major breakthrough in recent year. However, this research field is running with the lack of summaries about tailorable construction of 2D COFs for targeted functionalities. This review first covers some crucial polymeric strategies of preparing COFs, containing boron ester condensation, amine-aldehyde condensation, Knoevenagel condensation, trimerization reaction, Suzuki CC coupling reaction, and hybrid polycondensation. Subsequently, a summary is made of some representative building blocks, and then underlines how the electronic and molecular structures of building blocks can strongly influence the functional performance of COFs. Finally, conclusion and perspectives on 2D COFs for further study are proposed.

Packing Biomolecules into Sierpiński Triangles with Global Organizational Chirality

Fractals are found in nature and play important roles in biological functions. However, it is challenging to controllably prepare biomolecule fractals. In this study, a series of Sierpiński triangles with global organizational chirality is successfully constructed by the coassembly of l-tryptophan and 1,3-bi(4-pyridyl)benzene molecules on Ag(111). The chirality is switched when replacing l-tryptophan by d-tryptophan. The fractal structures are characterized by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy at the single-molecule level. Density functional theory calculations reveal that intermolecular hydrogen bonds stabilize the Sierpiński triangles.

Sierpiński Structure and Electronic Topology in Bi Thin Films on InSb(111)B Surfaces

Deposition of Bi on InSb(111)B reveals a striking Sierpiński-triangle (ST)-like structure in Bi thin films. Such a fractal geometric topology is further shown to turn off the intrinsic electronic topology in a thin film. Relaxation of a huge misfit strain of about 30% to 40% between Bi adlayer and substrate is revealed to drive the ST-like island formation. A Frenkel-Kontrova model is developed to illustrate the enhanced strain relief in the ST islands offsetting the additional step energy cost. Besides a sufficiently large tensile strain, forming ST-like structures also requires larger adlayer-substrate and intra-adlayer elastic stiffnesses, and weaker intra-adlayer interatomic interactions.

Boronic ester Sierpiński triangle fractals: from precursor design to on-surface synthesis and self-assembling superstructures

Herein, we designed and synthesized a precursor with a three-fold node and successfully constructed covalent Sierpiński triangle (ST) fractals with boronic ester linkages both at the liquid/solid interface at room temperature and by thermal annealing in a water atmosphere under ambient conditions. Remarkably, large-scale ordered superstructures of covalent STs are constructed by thermal annealing, which paves the way for property investigation of STs.

Self-Assembly of Metallo-Supramolecules with Dissymmetrical Ligands and Characterization by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy

Asymmetrical and dissymmetrical structures are widespread and play a critical role in nature and life systems. In the field of metallo-supramolecular assemblies, it is still in its infancy for constructing artificial architectures using dissymmetrical building blocks. Herein, we report the self-assembly of supramolecular systems based on two dissymmetrical double-layered ligands. With the aid of ultra-high-vacuum, low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (UHV-LT-STM), we were able to investigate four isomeric structures corresponding to four types of binding modes of ligand LA with two major conformations complexes A. The distribution of isomers measured by STM and total binding energy of each isomer obtained by density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggested that the most abundant isomer could be the most stable one with highest total binding energy. Finally, through shortening the linker between inner and outer layers and the length of arms, the arrangement of dissymmetrical ligand LB could be controlled within one binding mode corresponding to the single conformation for complexes B.

Packing Sierpiński Triangles into Two-Dimensional Crystals

Fractals are of fundamental importance in science and technology. Theoretical simulations indicate that Sierpiński triangles (STs) possess specific optical and electronic properties. To study their properties and uncover their potential applications, it is necessary to pack STs into large-scale two-dimensional crystalline structures. Here, a series of ordered structures consisting of ST units are successfully constructed on gold surfaces through coordination between 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl) benzene molecules and Fe atoms. Crystals of STs are characterized by scanning tunneling microscopy. K-map analysis explains the structural formation mechanism, which is further verified by density functional theory calculations. The molecular free diffusion and nice structure matching between STs and gold surfaces play important roles in the formation of crystals of STs.

Assembling Shape-Persistent High-Order Sierpiński Triangular Fractals

Fractals are a series of intricate patterns with aesthetic, mathematic, and philosophic significance. The Sierpiński triangles have been known for more than one hundred years, but only recently discrete shape-persistent low-generation (mainly ST-1) fractal supramolecules have been realized. Herein, we report a retro-assembly pathway to the nanometer-scale, supra-macromolecular second-generation Sierpiński triangle and its third-generation saturated counterpart (Pascal's triangle). These gigantic triangular assemblies are unambiguously confirmed by NMR, DOSY, ESI-MS, TWIM-MS, TEM, and AFM analyses. Notably, the dense-packed counterions of these discrete triangular architectures could further form supramolecular hydro-gels in water. This work not only provides a fundamental chemical pathway to explore various giant supramolecular constructs and further overcome the synthetic limitation of complicated molecular fractals, but also presents a new type of supramolecular hydro-gels with potential in controlled release applications.

Multicomponent Metallo-Supramolecular Nanocapsules Assembled from Calix[4]resorcinarene-Based Terpyridine Ligands

Tetrafunctionalized calix[4]resorcinarene cavitands commonly serve as supramolecular scaffolds for construction of coordination-driven self-assembled capsules. However, due to the calix-like shape, the structural diversity of assemblies is mostly restricted to dimeric and hexameric capsules. Previously, we reported a spontaneous heteroleptic complexation strategy based on a pair of self-recognizable terpyridine-based ligands and Cd^II ions. Building on this complementary ligand pairing system, herein three types of nanocapsules, including a dimeric capsule, a Sierpiński triangular prism, and a cubic star, could be readily obtained through dynamic complexation reactions between a tetratopic cavitand-based ligand and various multitopic counterparts in the presence of Cd^II ions. The dimeric capsular assemblies display the spacer-length-dependent self-sorting behavior in a four-component system. Moreover, the precise multicomponent self-assembly of a Sierpiński triangular prism and a cubic star possessing three and six cavitand-based motifs, respectively, demonstrates that such self-assembly methodology is able to efficiently enhance architectural complexity for calix[4]resorcinarene-containing metallo-supramolecules.

Surface-confined single-layer covalent organic frameworks: design, synthesis and application

This review describes the state of the art of surface-confined single-layer covalent organic frameworks, focusing on reticular design, synthesis approaches, and exploring applications in host/guest chemistry.

Selective Adsorption of C60 in the Supramolecular Nanopatterns of Donor-Acceptor Porphyrin Derivatives

The nanostructure of active layers consisting of donor and acceptor molecules is responsible for the separation and transfer processes of charge carriers, which may result in different photoelectric conversion efficiencies of organic photovoltaic cells (OPVCs). Therefore, intensive study on the relationships among nanostructures, intermolecular interactions, and molecular chemical skeletons is necessary for preparing controlled nanostructures of active layers by designing photovoltaic molecules. In this research, the self-assembled nanopatterns of three (DPP-ZnP-E)2-based molecules on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite surface were probed by scanning tunneling microscopy and analyzed by density functional theory calculations. The results indicated that different bridges, diethynylene, diethynylene-dithienyl, and diethynylene-phenylene, in (DPP-ZnP-E)2-based molecules not only made a difference to intermolecular interactions and cooperated with molecule-substrate interactions, consequently affecting the packed nanopattern, but also influenced the adsorption of fullerene acceptors in the nanopatterns of (DPP-ZnP-E)2-based molecules. C₆₀ molecules were found to be selectively adsorbed atop the dithienyl groups of (DPP-ZnP-E)2-2T donor molecules probably by S···π interactions compared with (DPP-ZnP-E)2 or (DPP-ZnP-E)2-Ph molecules. This study on the assembled nanopatterns of the three (DPP-ZnP-E)2-based molecules would be conductive to (DPP-ZnP-E)2-based optoelectronic materials design in OPVCs.

Covalent organic frameworks from a monomer with reduced symmetry: polymorphism and Sierpiński triangles

We report on the synthesis of a covalent organic framework based on the low-symmetry 1,3-benzenediboronic acid precursor. Two distinct polymorphs are obtained, a honeycomb network and Sierpiński triangles, as elucidated by scanning tunneling microscopy. Control over polymorph formation was achieved by varying the precursor concentration for on-surface synthesis.
