Rare-earth metal ethylene and ethyne complexes

Guanidinate homometallic rare-earth ethyl complexes [LLn(μ2-η1:η2-Et)(Et)]2 (Ln = Y(1-Y), Lu(1-Lu)) and heterobimetallic rare-earth ethyl complexes LLn(Et)(μ2-η1:η2-Et)(μ2-η1-Et)(AlEt2) (Ln = Y(2-Y), Lu(2-Lu)) have been synthesized by the treatment of LLn(CH2C6H4NMe2-o)2 (L = (PhCH2)2NC(NC6H3iPr2-2,6)2) with different equivalents of AlEt3 in toluene at ambient temperature. Interestingly, the unprecedented rare-earth ethyne complex [LY(μ2-η1-Et)2(AlEt)]2(μ4-η1:η1:η2:η2-C2H2) (3-Y) containing a [C2H2]4- unit was afforded from 2-Y. The formation mechanism study on 3-Y was carried out by DFT calculations. Furthermore, the nature of the bonding of 3-Y was also revealed by NBO analysis. The reactions of LLn(CH2 C6H4NMe2-o)2 (Ln = Y, Lu) with AlEt3 (4 equiv.) in toluene at 50 °C produced firstly the non-Cp rare-earth ethylene complex LY(μ3-η1:η1:η2-C2H4)[(μ2-η1-Et)(AlEt2)(μ2-η1-Et)2(AlEt)] (4-Y), and the Y/Al ethyl complex LY[(μ2-η1-Et)2(AlEt2)]2 (5-Y) as an intermediate of 4-Y was isolated from the reaction of LY(CH2C6H4NMe2-o)2 with AlEt3 (4 equiv.) in toluene at -10 °C.

Tridentate Nitrogen Ligand as a Tool for the Construction of Well-Defined Rare Earth Trichloride Complexes

LnCl3(THF)3 (Ln = Y, La ÷ Nd, Sm ÷ Lu) readily react with the tridentate 1,3,5-trimethyl-1,3,5-triazacyclohexane (Me3tach) ligand to form mono- or binuclear lanthanide trichloride complexes, depending on the stoichiometry of the reaction and the ionic radius of the metal: mononuclear pseudosandwich [LnCl3(Me3tach)2], (Ln = Y, La ÷ Ho) or binuclear complexes [Ln2Cl6(Me3tach)3], or [LnCl3(Me3tach)(THF)]2 (Ln = Sm, Tb). Detailed analysis of the NMR data of [LnCl3(Me3tach)2] complexes with paramagnetic lanthanide ions showed that their structures remained unchanged in the toluene solution. A series of isomorphous complexes [LnCl3(Me3tach)(Py)2] (Ln = La, Sm, Tb, Er, Lu; Py = pyridine) have been obtained by the recrystallization of either mononuclear or binuclear complexes from pyridine. Complexes of terbium and europium ions with the Me3tach ligand exhibit relatively high quantum yields of metal-centered luminescence (0.39 and 0.32, respectively).

A binuclear guanidinate yttrium carbyne complex: unique reactivity toward unsaturated C-N, C-O and C-S bonds

A guanidinato-stabilized binuclear yttrium carbyne complex [(PhCH2)2NC(NC6H3iPr2-2,6)2]2Y2(μ2-Me)(AlMe3)2(μ4-CH) (1) was synthesized via C-H bond activation and its versatile reactivities were investigated. Complex 1 underwent σ-bond metathesis with PhSSPh and nucleophilic addition with PhCN to form the corresponding yttrium thiolate complex 3 and aza-allyl complex 4 respectively. Additionally, the rare yttrium carbide complex 5 was also prepared by treatment of complex 1 with S8. Interestingly, in the reaction with PhNCS, the C[double bond, length as m-dash]S double bond was cleaved, followed by C-H bond activation to give the yttrium sulfide complex 7 with a ketenimine dianion ligand. Unexpectedly, the reaction of complex 1 with CO (1 atm) resulted in deoxygenative coupling of CO, to afford mono- or dioxo-yttrium complexes at different temperatures. The mechanism of the possible formation processes of complexes 3 and 9 was elucidated by DFT calculations.

Schlenk's Legacy-Methyllithium Put under Close Scrutiny

Commercially available stock solutions of organolithium reagents are well-implemented tools in organic and organometallic chemistry. However, such solutions are inherently contaminated with lithium halide salts, which can complicate certain synthesis protocols and purification processes. Here, we report the isolation of chloride-free methyllithium employing K[N(SiMe₃ )₂ ] as a halide-trapping reagent. The influence of distinct LiCl contaminations on the ⁷ Li-NMR chemical shift is examined and their quantification demonstrated. The structural parameters of new chloride-free monomeric methyllithium complex [(Me₃ TACN)LiCH₃ ], ligated by an azacrown ether, are assessed by comparison with a halide-contaminated variant and monomeric lithium chloride [(Me₃ TACN)LiCl], further emphasizing the effect of halide impurities.

Distinct Reactivity of Trimethylytterbium toward AlMe3 and GaMe3 : Synthesis of Donor-Stabilized Dimethylytterbium

Me₃ TACN (1,4,7-trimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane)-stabilized trimethylytterbium was obtained via a salt-metathesis protocol employing [(Me₃ TACN)YbCl₃ ] and methyllithium. Complex [(Me₃ TACN)YbMe₃ ] seems not to engage in redox chemistry with potassium graphite and is thermally quite stable in the solid state. Treatment of trivalent [(Me₃ TACN)YbMe₃ ] with 3 equiv. of AlMe₃ afforded divalent tetramethylaluminate complex [(Me₃ TACN)Yb(AlMe₄ )₂ ]. The reaction of [(Me₃ TACN)YbMe₃ ] with GaMe₃ in THF gave trivalent ion pair [(Me₃ TACN)YbMe₂ (thf)][GaMe₄ ], which is susceptible to reduction with KC₈ . The thermally very labile divalent [(Me₃ TACN)YbMe(μ-Me)]₂ is the first discrete donor adduct of a divalent dimethyl rare-earth-metal complex.

[(CH3 )Al(CH2 )]12 : Methylaluminomethylene (MAM-12)

The molecular structure of enigmatic “poly(aluminium‐methyl‐methylene)” (first reported in 1968) has been unraveled in a transmetalation reaction with gallium methylene [Ga₈(CH₂)₁₂] and AlMe₃. The existence of cage‐like methylaluminomethylene moieties was initially suggested by the reaction of rare‐earth‐metallocene complex [Cp*₂Lu{(μ‐Me)₂AlMe₂}] with excess AlMe₃ affording the deca‐aluminium cluster [Cp*₄Lu₂(μ₃‐CH₂)₁₂Al₁₀(CH₃)₈] in low yield (Cp*=C₅Me₅). Treatment of [Ga₈(CH₂)₁₂] with excess AlMe₃ reproducibly gave the crystalline dodeca‐aluminium complex [(CH₃)₁₂Al₁₂(μ₃‐CH₂)₁₂] (MAM‐12). Revisiting a previous approach to “poly(aluminium‐methyl‐methylene” by using a (C₅H₅)₂TiCl₂/AlMe₃ (1 : 100) mixture led to amorphous solids displaying solubility behavior and spectroscopic features similar to those of crystalline MAM‐12. The gallium methylene‐derived MAM‐12 was used as an efficient methylene transfer reagent for ketones.

Rare Earth Starting Materials and Methodologies for Synthetic Chemistry

The number of rare earth (RE) starting materials used in synthesis is staggering, ranging from simple binary metal-halide salts to borohydrides and "designer reagents" such as alkyl and organoaluminate complexes. This review collates the most important starting materials used in RE synthetic chemistry, including essential information on their preparations and uses in modern synthetic methodologies. The review is divided by starting material category and supporting ligands (i.e., metals as synthetic precursors, halides, borohydrides, nitrogen donors, oxygen donors, triflates, and organometallic reagents), and in each section relevant synthetic methodologies and applications are discussed.

Yttrium tris(trimethylsilylmethyl) complexes grafted onto MCM-48 mesoporous silica nanoparticles

A series of tris(trimethylsilylmethyl) yttrium donor adduct complexes was synthesized and fully characterized by X-ray diffraction, ¹H/¹³C/²⁹Si/³¹P/⁸⁹Y heteronuclear NMR and FTIR spectroscopies as well as elemental analyses. Treatment of Y(CH₂SiMe₃)₃(thf)_x with various donors Do led to complete (Do = TMEDA, DMAP) and partial displacement of THF (Do = NHC^iPr, DMPE). Exceptionally large ⁸⁹Y NMR shifts to low field were observed for the new complexes. Complexes Y(CH₂SiMe₃)₃(tmeda) and Y(CH₂SiMe₃)₃(dmpe)(thf) were chosen to perform surface organometallic chemistry, due to a comparatively higher thermal stability and the availability of the ³¹P nucleus as a spectroscopic probe, respectively. Mesoporous nanoparticles of the MCM-48-type were synthesized and used as a 3^rd generation silica support. The parent and hybrid materials were characterized using X-ray powder diffraction, solid-state-NMR spectroscopy, DRIFTS, elemental analyses, N₂-physisorption, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The presence of surface-bound yttrium alkyl moieties was further proven by the reaction with carbon dioxide. Quantification of the surface silanol population by means of HN(SiHMe₂)₂-promoted surface silylation is shown to be superior to titration with lithium alkyl LiCH₂SiMe₃.

The Alkylaluminate/Gallate Trap: Metalation of Benzene by Heterobimetallic Yttrocene Complexes [Cp*2Y(MMe3R)] (M = Al, Ga)

Yttrocene derivatives [Cp*₂Y(MMe₄)] (Cp* = C₅Me₅; M = Al, Ga) and Cp*₂Y[Me₃Al{B(NDippCH)₂}] (Dipp = C₆H₃iPr₂-2,6) deprotonate benzene at elevated temperatures via the release of methane. The formation of [Cp*₂Y(Me₂MPh₂)] (M = Al, Ga), Cp*₂Y(MPh₄) (M = Al, Ga), Cp*₂Y[Me₂AlPh{B(NDippCH)₂}], and Cp*₂Y[AlPh₃{B(NDippCH)₂}] can be controlled via the temperature applied. The activation temperature and formation of the coordinatively unsaturated "reactive" [Cp*₂YMe] strongly depend on the coordination strength of the displaceable Lewis acids [AlMe₃]₂, GaMe₃, and [Me₂Al{B(NDippCH)₂}]₂. Hence, [Cp*₂Y(AlMe₄)] requires temperatures above 100 °C to metalate benzene, while Cp*₂Y[AlMe₃{B(NDippCH)₂}] undergoes C-H-bond activation even at ambient temperatures. A kinetic deuterium isotope effect was observed for the reactions in C₆D₆ solutions. Distinct differences in the stabilities of the bulky Group 13 anions ([Me₂MPh₂]^-, [MPh₄]^-, [Me₃Al{B(NDippCH)₂}]^-, [Me₂AlPh{B(NDippCH)₂}]^-, and [AlPh₃{B(NDippCH)₂}]^-) are assessed by detailed studies of the coordination chemistry with tetrahydrofuran (THF) and by variable-temperature ¹H NMR spectroscopy. Thus, increased steric bulk or a reduced Lewis acidity of the Group 13 metal center promote temperature-sensitive dissociation of trivalent Group 13 alkyl entities. Consequently, compound Cp*₂Y[AlPh₃{B(NDippCH)₂}] was found to engage in a dissociation equilibrium with [Cp*₂YPh] and AlPh₂{B(NDippCH)₂} in a C₆D₆ solution at ambient temperature. The reaction of Cp*₂Y[AlPh₃{B(NDippCH)₂}] with THF results in the concomitant formation of monometallic Cp*₂YPh(THF) and the solvent-separated ion pair [Cp*₂Y(THF)₂][AlPh₃{B(NDippCH)₂}].

Trinuclear scandium methylidyne complexes stabilized by pentamethylcyclopentadienyl ligands

The first examples of scandium methylidyne complexes [(Cp*)Sc(μ2-X)]3(μ3-CH) (Cp* = C5Me5; X = Br, Me, OMe), free of Lewis acids, can be achieved in high yields from [(Cp*)ScMe2]2 through a facile route. The chemical and geometrical flexibility to incorporate organic substrates indicates a rich chemistry of complex [(Cp*)Sc(μ2-OMe)]3(μ3-CH).

CeCl3 /n-BuLi: Unraveling Imamoto's Organocerium Reagent

CeCl₃(thf) reacts at low temperatures with MeLi, t‐BuLi, and n‐BuLi to isolable organocerium complexes. Solvent‐dependent extensive n‐BuLi dissociation is revealed by ⁷Li NMR spectroscopy, suggesting “Ce(n‐Bu)₃(thf)_x” or solvent‐separated ion pairs like “[Li(thf)₄][Ce(n‐Bu)₄(thf)_y]” as the dominant species of the Imamoto reagent. The stability of complexes Li₃Ln(n‐Bu)₆(thf)₄ increases markedly with decreasing Ln^III size. Closer inspection of the solution behavior of crystalline Li₃Lu(n‐Bu)₆(thf)₄ and mixtures of LuCl₃(thf)₂/n‐BuLi in THF indicates occurring n‐BuLi dissociation only at molar ratios of <1:3. n‐BuLi‐depleted complex LiLu(n‐Bu)₃Cl(tmeda)₂ was obtained by treatment of Li₂Lu(n‐Bu)₅(tmeda)₂ with ClSiMe₃, at the expense of LiCl incorporation. Imamoto's ketone/tertiary alcohol transformation was examined with 1,3‐diphenylpropan‐2‐one, affording 99 % of alcohol.

Carbenaporphyrins: No Longer Missing Ligands in N-Heterocyclic Carbene Chemistry

The synthesis of an NHC-containing porphyrinoid ligand is presented. The formally antiaromatic 20 πe- macrocyclic framework can be obtained via a 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition ("click-reaction") to form two triazole moieties which were alkylated to the respective triazolium macrocycle. Deprotonation of the ligand precursor with lithium bases to the respective dilithio carbenaporphyrin complex and transmetallation to scandium lead to complexes that exhibit orange fluorescence. Optical property combined with TD-DFT studies verify an aromatic character for each heterocyclic moiety rather than an antiaromatic macrocycle in the ligand precursor as well as in the complexes. While the geometric features of the carbenaporphyrin ligand strongly resemble those of porphyrin, DFT calculations reveal a stronger electron-donating ability of the new ligand.

Polymeric dimethylytterbium and the terminal methyl complex (TptBu,Me)Yb(CH3)(thf)

Divalent ytterbium bis(trimethylsilyl)amides [Yb{N(SiMe₃)₂}₂]₂ and Yb[N(SiMe₃)₂]₂(thf)₂ react with purified methyllithium to amorphous dimethylytterbium [YbMe₂]_n. The characterisation was performed by ¹⁷¹Yb and ¹³C CP/MAS NMR spectroscopy as well as by conducting protonolysis reactions with HC₅Me₅ and HTp^tBu,Me, affording known (C₅Me₅)₂Yb(OEt₂) and new (Tp^tBu,Me)Yb(CH₃)(thf).

Reduced Arene Complexes of Scandium

Alkali metal naphthalenide or anthracenide reacted with scandium(III) anilides [Sc(X){N(tBu)Xy}2 (thf)] (X=N(tBu)Xy (1); X=Cl (2); Xy=C6 H3 -3,5-Me2 ) to give scandium complexes [M(thf)n ][Sc{N(tBu)Xy}2 (RA)] (M=Li-K; n=1-6; RA=C10 H8 2- (3-Naph-K) and C14 H10 2- (3-Anth-M)) containing a reduced arene ligand. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction revealed the scandium(III) center bonded to the naphthalene dianion in a σ2 :π-coordination mode, whereas the anthracene dianion is symmetrically attached to the scandium(III) center in a σ2 -fashion. All compounds have been characterized by multinuclear, including 45 Sc NMR spectroscopy. Quantum chemical calculations of these intensely colored arene complexes confirm scandium to be in the oxidation state +3. The intense absorptions observed in the UV/Vis spectra are due to ligand-to-metal charge transfers. Whereas nitriles underwent C-C coupling reaction with the reduced arene ligand, the reaction with one equivalent of [NEt3 H][BPh4 ] led to the mono-protonation of the reduced arene ligand.

Scandium bis(trimethylsilyl)methyl complexes revisited: extending the 45Sc NMR chemical shift range and a new structural motif of Li[CH(SiMe3)2]

Depending on the molar ratio employed, the reaction of ScCl₃(thf)₃ with Li[CH(SiMe₃)₂] afforded the bis and tris(alkyl) ate complexes [Sc{CH(SiMe₃)₂}₂(μ-Cl)₂Li(thf)₂]₂ and Sc[CH(SiMe₃)₂]₃(μ-Cl)Li(thf)₃, respectively, in moderate yields. Treatment of these mixed alkyl/chlorido complexes with MeLi gave the mixed alkyl complexes [Sc{CH(SiMe₃)₂}₂(μ-Me)₂Li(thf)₂]₂ and Sc[CH(SiMe₃)₂]₃(μ-Me)Li(thf)₃. Aiming at homoleptic {Sc[CH(SiMe₃)₂]₃} both of the mixed [CH(SiMe₃)₂]/Me complexes were treated with AlMe₃. Although LiAlMe₄ separation occurred, aluminium complex Al[CH(SiMe₃)₂]Me₂(thf) was the only isolable crystalline complex. Ate complexes [Sc{CH(SiMe₃)₂}₂(μ-Me)₂Li(thf)₂]₂ and [Sc(CH₂SiMe₃)₄][Li(thf)₄] revealed the maximum downfield ⁴⁵Sc NMR chemical shifts of 888.0 and 933.4 ppm, respectively, reported to date. The synthesis of putative {Sc[CH(SiMe₃)₂]₃} was also attempted via the aryloxide route applying complexes Sc(OC₆H₂tBu₂-2,6-Me-4)₃ and [Sc(OC₆H₃iPr₂-2,6)₃]₂ along with Li[CH(SiMe₃)₂] but the outcome was inconclusive. Instead, a cyclic octamer was found for Li[CH(SiMe₃)₂] in the solid state.
