Abstract
Photoswitchable molecules that undergo nanoscopic changes upon photoisomerisation can be harnessed to control macroscopic properties such as colour, solubility, shape, and motion of the systems they are incorporated into. These molecules find applications in various fields of chemistry, physics, biology, and materials science. Until recently, research efforts have focused on the design of efficient photoswitches responsive to low-energy (red or near-infrared) irradiation, which however may compromise other molecular properties such as thermal stability and robustness. Indirect isomerisation methods enable photoisomerisation with low-energy photons without altering the photoswitch core, and also open up new avenues in controlling the thermal switching mechanism. In this perspective, we present the state of the art of five indirect excitation methods: two-photon excitation, triplet sensitisation, photon upconversion, photoinduced electron transfer, and indirect thermal methods. Each impacts our understanding of the fundamental physicochemical properties of photochemical switches, and offers unique application prospects in biomedical technologies and beyond.

Abstract
Nonlinear photochromic reactions that work with weak incoherent light are important for molecular operations with high spatial resolution and multiple photofunctions based on single molecules. However, nonlinear photochromic compounds generally require complex molecular design, restricting accessibility in various fields. Herein, we report nonlinear photochromic properties in a perylene-substituted rhodamine spirolactam derivative (Rh-Pe), which is synthesized from rhodamine B in facile procedures. Direct excitation of Rh-Pe produces the triplet excited state via the charge-transfer (CT) state. The triplet excited state causes triplet-triplet annihilation to bring the generation of the intensely colored ring-open form with nonlinear behavior. Furthermore, green- and red-light-induced photochromism was achieved in Rh-Pe using triplet sensitizers, although Rh-Pe can be directly excited only by ultraviolet and blue light. Our findings are expected to contribute to the development of photofunctional materials showing nonlinear behavior and low-energy light responsivity.

Abstract
Near-infrared two-photon absorption and excited state dynamics of a fluorescent diarylethene (fDAE) derivative were investigated by time-resolved absorption and fluorescence spectroscopies. Prescreening with quantum chemical calculation predicted that a derivative with methylthienyl groups (mt-fDAE) in the closed-ring isomer has a two-photon absorption cross-section larger than 1000 GM, which was experimentally verified by Z-scan measurements and excitation power dependence in transient absorption. Comparison of transient absorption spectra under one-photon and simultaneous two-photon excitation conditions revealed that the closed-ring isomer of mt-fDAE populated into higher excited states deactivates following three pathways on a timescale of ca. 200 fs: (i) the cycloreversion reaction more efficient than that by the one-photon process, (ii) internal conversion into the S1 state, and (iii) relaxation into a lower state (S1' state) different from the S1 state. Time-resolved fluorescence measurements demonstrated that this S1' state is relaxed to the S1 state with the large emission probability. These findings obtained in the present work contribute to extension of the ON-OFF switching capability of fDAE to the biological window and application to super-resolution fluorescence imaging in a two-photon manner.

Abstract
Achieving visible-light photochromism is a long-term goal of chemists keen to exploit the opportunities of molecular photoswitches in multi-disciplinary research studies. Triplet-sensitization offers a flexible approach to building diverse visible-light photoswitches using existing photochromic scaffolds, circumventing the need for sophisticated molecular design and synthesis. Unfortunately, distance-dependence and environment-sensitivity of triplet-excited species remain as key challenges that severely impair sensitization efficiency and limit their practical availability. We present herein a nature-inspired nanoconfinement strategy in which a triplet-sensitized visible-light photoswitch/sensitizer system is assembled into nanoconfined micelles (d ∼ 40 nm). A ca. 10-fold efficiency increase of triplet-triplet energy transfer for photochromism as well as an amplified fluorescence on/off contrast upon bi-directional visible-light excitation (470/560 nm) was achieved in full aqueous media. By virtue of this, the hybrid photoswitchable system is successfully applied for both flash information encryption and multiple dynamic cell imaging assays, further proving its versatility in materials and life science.

Abstract
Photon upconversion is a method for harnessing high-energy excited states from low-energy photons. Such photons, particularly in the red and near-infrared wavelength ranges, can penetrate tissue deeply and undergo less competitive absorption in coloured reaction media, enhancing the efficiency of large-scale reactions and in vivo phototherapy. Among various upconversion methodologies, the organic-based triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC) stands out - demonstrating high upconversion efficiencies, requiring low excitation power densities and featuring tunable absorption and emission wavelengths. These factors contribute to improved photochemical reactions for fields such as photoredox catalysis, photoactivation, 3D printing and immunotherapy. In this Review, we explore concepts and design principles of organic TTA-UC-mediated photochemical reactions, highlighting notable advancements in the field, as well as identify challenges and propose potential solutions. This Review sheds light on the potential of organic TTA-UC to advance beyond the traditional photochemical reactions and paves the way for research in various fields and clinical applications.

Abstract
Triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC) has the potential to enhance photoredox catalysis yield. It includes a sensitizer and an annihilator. Efficient and stable annihilators are essential for photoredox catalysis, yet only a few examples are reported. Herein, we designed four novel pyrene annihilators (1, 2, 3 and 4) via introducing aryl-alkynyl groups onto pyrene to systematically modulate their singlet and triplet energies. Coupled with platinum octaethylporphyrin (PtOEP), the TTA-UC efficiency is enhanced gradually as the number of aryl-alkynyl group increases. When combining 4 with palladium tetraphenyl-tetrabenzoporphyrin (PdTPTBP), we achieved the highest red-to-green upconversion efficiency (22.4±0.3 %) (out of a 50 % maximum) so far. Then, this pair was used to activate photooxidation of aryl boronic acid under red light (630 nm), which achieved a great improved reaction yield compared to that activated by green light directly. The results not only provide a design strategy for efficient annihilators, but also show the advantage of applying TTA-UC into improving the photoredox catalysis yield.

Abstract
UV light can trigger a plethora of useful photochemical reactions for diverse applications, including photocatalysis, photopolymerization, and drug delivery. These applications typically require penetration of high-energy photons deep into materials, yet delivering these photons beyond the surface is extremely challenging due to absorption and scattering effects. Triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC) shows great promise to circumvent this issue by generating high-energy photons from incident lower-energy photons. However, molecules that facilitate TTA-UC usually have poor water solubility, limiting their deployment in aqueous environments. To address this challenge, a nanoencapsulation method is leveraged to fabricate water-compatible UC micelles, enabling on-demand UV photon generation deep into materials. Two iridium-based complexes are presented for use as TTA-UC sensitizers with increased solubilities that facilitate the formation of highly emissive UV-upconverting micelles. Furthermore, this encapsulation method is shown to be generalizable to nineteen UV-emitting UC systems, accessing a range of upconverted UV emission profiles with wavelengths as low as 350 nm. As a proof-of-principle demonstration of precision photochemistry at depth, UV-emitting UC micelles are used to photolyze a fluorophore at a focal point nearly a centimeter beyond the surface, revealing opportunities for spatially controlled manipulation deep into UV-responsive materials.

Abstract
Sensitized triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion is a promising strategy to use visible light for chemical reactions requiring the energy input of UV photons. This strategy avoids unsafe ultraviolet light sources and can mitigate photo-damage and provide access to reactions, for which filter effects hamper direct UV excitation. Here, we report a new approach to make blue-to-UV upconversion more amenable to photochemical applications. The tethering of a naphthalene unit to a cyclometalated iridium(III) complex yields a bichromophore with a high triplet energy (2.68 eV) and a naphthalene-based triplet reservoir featuring a lifetime of 72.1 μs, roughly a factor of 20 longer than the photoactive excited state of the parent iridium(III) complex. In combination with three different annihilators, consistently lower thresholds for the blue-to-UV upconversion to crossover from a quadratic into a linear excitation power dependence regime were observed with the bichromophore compared to the parent iridium(III) complex. The upconversion system composed of the bichromophore and the 2,5-diphenyloxazole annihilator is sufficiently robust under long-term blue irradiation to continuously provide a high-energy singlet-excited state that can drive chemical reactions normally requiring UV light. Both photoredox and energy transfer catalyses were feasible using this concept, including the reductive N-O bond cleavage of Weinreb amides, a C-C coupling reaction based on reductive aryl debromination, and two Paternò-Büchi [2 + 2] cycloaddition reactions. Our work seems relevant in the context of developing new strategies for driving energetically demanding photochemistry with low-energy input light.

Abstract
Green-to-blue triplet-triplet annihilation photon upconversion with the well-studied upconversion pair 9,10-diphenylanthracene (DPA)/platinum octaethylporphyrin (PtOEP) was used to reversibly drive the photoisomerization of diarylethene (DAE) photoswitches by using visible light. By carefully selecting the kinetic and spectral properties of the molecular system as well as the experimental geometry, a single green light source can be used to selectively trigger both the ring-opening and the ring-closing reactions, whilst also inducing fluorescence from the colored closed isomer that can be used as a readout to monitor the isomerization process in situ. The upconversion solution and the DAE solution are kept physically separated, allowing them to be characterized both concomitantly and individually without further separation processes. The ring-closing reaction using upconverted photons was quantified and compared to the efficiency of direct isomerization with ultraviolet light.

Abstract
Using light to control matter has captured the imagination of scientists for generations, as there is an abundance of photons at our disposal. Yet delivering photons beyond the surface to many photoresponsive systems has proven challenging, particularly at scale, due to light attenuation via absorption and scattering losses. Triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC), a process which allows for low energy photons to be converted to high energy photons, is poised to overcome these challenges by allowing for precise spatial generation of high energy photons due to its nonlinear nature. With a wide range of sensitizer and annihilator motifs available for TTA-UC, many researchers seek to integrate these materials in solution or solid-state applications. In this Review, we discuss nanoengineering deployment strategies and highlight their uses in recent state-of-the-art examples of TTA-UC integrated in both solution and solid-state applications. Considering both implementation tactics and application-specific requirements, we identify critical needs to push TTA-UC-based applications from an academic curiosity to a scalable technology.

Abstract
Several energy-demanding photoreactions require harsh UV light from inefficient light sources. The conversion of low-energy visible light to high-energy singlet states via triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC) could offer a solution for driving such reactions under mild conditions. We present the first annihilator with an emission maximum in the UVB region that, combined with an organic sensitizer, is suitable for blue-to-UVB upconversion. The annihilator singlet was successfully employed as an energy donor in subsequent FRET activations of aliphatic carbonyls. This hitherto unreported UC-FRET reaction sequence was directly monitored using laser spectroscopy and applied to mechanistic irradiation experiments demonstrating the feasibility of Norrish chemistry. Our results provide clear evidence for a novel blue light-driven substrate or solvent activation strategy, which is important in the context of developing more sustainable light-to-chemical energy conversion systems.

Abstract
Combining steady-state photoluminescence and transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy, we have investigated the photoinduced charge transfer dynamics between lead-free Mn-doped Cs2NaIn0.75Bi0.25Cl6 double perovskite (DP) nanocrystals (NCs) and conjugated poly[2-methoxy-5-(3',7'-dimethyloctyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MDMO-PPV). Upon ultraviolet-A excitation, the photoinduced absorption feature of DP NCs/MDMO-PPV nanocomposites disappeared, and the stimulated emission weakened in the TA spectrum. This was due to charge transfer from the MDMO-PPV polymers to DP NCs. Upon a higher photon-energy ultraviolet-C excitation, stimulated emission and photoinduced absorption features vanished, indicating there existed a reversible charge transfer from DP NCs to MDMO-PPV polymers. Reversible charge transfer of Mn-doped DP NCs/MDMO-PPV nanocomposites was tuned by varying the excitation photon-energy. The manipulation of reversible charge transfer dynamics in the perovskite-polymer nanocomposites opens a new avenue for optical and optoelectronic applications.

Abstract
Light offers unique opportunities for controlling the activity of materials and biosystems with high spatiotemporal resolution. Molecular photoswitches are chromophores that undergo reversible isomerization between different states upon irradiation with light, allowing a convenient means to control their influence over the system of interest. However, a significant limitation of classical photoswitches is the requirement to initiate the switching in one or both directions using deleterious UV light with poor tissue penetration. Red-shifted photoswitches are hence in high demand and have attracted keen recent research interest. In this Review, we highlight recent progress towards the development of visible- and NIR-activated photoswitches characterized by distinct photochromic reaction mechanisms. We hope to inspire further endeavors in this field, allowing the full potential of these tools in biotechnology and materials chemistry applications to be realized.

Abstract
Triplet–triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC) is a very promising technology that could be used to convert low-energy photons to high-energy ones and has been proven to be of great value in various areas. Porphyrins have the characteristics of high molar absorbance, can form a complex with different metal ions and a high proportion of triplet states as well as tunable structures, and thus they are important sensitizers for TTA-UC. Porphyrin-based TTA-UC plays a pivotal role in the TTA-UC systems and has been widely used in many fields such as solar cells, sensing and circularly polarized luminescence. In recent years, applications of porphyrin-based TTA-UC systems for photoinduced reactions have emerged, but have been paid little attention. As a consequence, this review paid close attention to the recent advances in the photoreactions triggered by porphyrin-based TTA-UC systems. First of all, the photochemistry of porphyrin-based TTA-UC for chemical transformations, such as photoisomerization, photocatalytic synthesis, photopolymerization, photodegradation and photochemical/photoelectrochemical water splitting, was discussed in detail, which revealed the different mechanisms of TTA-UC and methods with which to carry out reasonable molecular innovations and nanoarchitectonics to solve the existing problems in practical application. Subsequently, photoreactions driven by porphyrin-based TTA-UC for biomedical applications were demonstrated. Finally, the future developments of porphyrin-based TTA-UC systems for photoreactions were briefly discussed.

Abstract
The photochromic molecules showing wavelength-selective or light intensity-dependent photoresponse are receiving increased attention in recent years. Although a photoswitch with a single chromophore can control the ON and OFF states of a function, that consisting of multi-chromophores would be useful for the specific control in complex systems. Herein, we designed stepwise two-photon induced photochromic molecules (PABI-PIC and PABI-PIC2) consisting of two different photochromic units (PABI and PIC). One-photon absorption reaction in the UV light region of PABI-PIC generates the short-lived transient biradical (BR) that absorbs an additional photon in the visible and UV light region in a stepwise manner to produce the two-photon photochemical product, the quinoidal species (Quinoid). The photochromic properties of these transient species are completely different in color and fading speed. In addition, PABI-PIC also shows the excitation wavelength-dependent photochromism because the excited states of the PABI and PIC units are electronically orthogonal. Therefore, the stepwise photochromic properties of PABI-PIC are easily controlled depending on the excitation light intensity and wavelength. These molecular designs are important for the development of advanced photoresponsive materials.

Abstract
Photon upconversion (UC) based on triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA) is considered one of the most attractive methodologies for switching wavelengths from lower to higher energy. This two-photon process, which requires the involvement of a bimolecular system, has been widely used in numerous fields such as bioimaging, solar cells, displays, drug delivery, and so on. In the last years, we have witnessed the harnessing of this concept by the organic community who have developed new strategies for synthetic purposes. Interestingly, the generation of high-energetic species by this phenomenon has provided the opportunity not only to photoredox activate compounds with high-energy demanding bonds, expanding the reactivity window that lies outside the energy window of the initial irradiation wavelength, but also to sensitized conventional photocatalysts through energy transfer processes even employing infrared irradiation. Herein, an overview of the principal examples found in literature is described where TTA-UC systems are found to be suitable photosensitizers for several chemical transformations.

Abstract
Two-photon polymerization (TPP) currently offers the highest resolution available in 3D printing (∼100 nm) but requires femtosecond laser pulses at very high peak intensity (∼1 TW/cm2). Here, we demonstrate 3D printing based on triplet-triplet-annihilation photopolymerization (TTAP), which achieves submicron resolution while using a continuous visible LED light source with comparatively low light intensity (∼10 W/cm2). TTAP enables submicrometer feature sizes with exposure times of ∼0.1 s/voxel without requiring a coherent or pulsed light source, opening the door to low-cost fabrication with submicron resolution. This approach enables 3D printing of a diverse array of designs with high resolution and is amenable to future parallelization efforts.

Abstract
In this work, the feasibility of triplet fusion upconversion (TFU, also named triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion) technology for the functionalization (arylation) of furans and thiophenes has been successfully proven. Activation of aryl halides by TFU leads to generation of aryl radical intermediates; trapping of the latter by the corresponding heteroarenes, which act as nucleophiles, affords the final coupling products. Advantages of this photoredox catalytic method include the use of very mild conditions (visible light, standard conditions), employment of commercially available reactants and low-loading metal-free photocatalysts, absence of any sacrificial agent (additive) in the medium and short irradiation times. The involvement of the high energetic delayed fluorescence in the reaction mechanism has been evidenced by quenching studies, whereas the two-photon nature of this photoredox arylation of furans and thiophenes has been manifested by the dependence on the energy source power. Finally, the scaling-up conditions have been gratifyingly afforded by a continuous-flow device.

Abstract
Incoherent nonlinear photophysical and photochemical processes based on stepwise two-photon absorption (2PA) processes have been recently used in materials science owing to their unique photoresponses beyond one-photon processes and lower power thresholds to induce the processes than those of coherent nonlinear optical processes. Among them, nonlinear photochromic materials have received considerable attention because they exhibit unconventional photoresponses compared with other incoherent nonlinear processes such as low-power-threshold nonlinear photoresponses with unimolecular systems, gated photochemical reactions and oxygen-insensitive nonlinear photoresponses. Nonlinear photochromic materials are important not only for colorimetric materials, but also for emergent materials that can enrich the next-generation society such as dynamic holographic materials, which are promising for three-dimensional displays. In this tutorial review, we introduce low-power-threshold nonlinear photochromic materials using stepwise 2PA processes. First, we explain the fundamental concepts of photochemistry as well as photochromic reactions. We attempt to provide an intuitive understanding of incoherent nonlinear optical processes using these fundamental concepts. Then, we introduce several recent examples and potential applications of nonlinear photochromic materials. This tutorial review is important for understanding the scientific progress related to these fields and provides a simple unified picture of the incoherent nonlinear optical properties of different types of photofunctional materials.

Abstract
Triplet-sensitized photon upconversion (UC) has been proposed for broad applications. However, the quest for superior solid materials has been challenged by the poor exciton transport often caused by low crystallinity, a small crystal domain, and aggregation of triplet sensitizers. Here, we demonstrate substantial advantages of the van der Waals solid solution concept to yield molecular crystals with extraordinary performance. A 0.001%-order porphyrin sensitizer is dissolved during recrystallization into the molecular crystals of a blue-fluorescent hydrocarbon annihilator, 9-(2-naphthyl)-10-[4-(1-naphthyl)phenyl]anthracene (ANNP), which contains bulky side groups. This attempt yields millimeter-sized, uniformly colored, transparent solid solution crystals, which resolves the long-standing problem of sensitizer aggregation. After annealing, the crystals exhibit unprecedented UC performance (UC quantum yield reaching 16% out of a maximum of 50% by definition; excitation intensity threshold of 0.175 sun; and high photostability of over 150 000 s) in air, which proves that this concept is highly effective in the quest for superior UC solid materials.

Abstract
Nitric oxide (NO) serves as a key regulator of many physiological processes and as a potent therapeutic agent. The local delivery of NO is important to achieve target therapeutic outcomes due to the toxicity of NO at high concentrations. Although light stimulus represents a non-invasive tool with spatiotemporal precision to mediate NO release, many photoresponsive NO-releasing molecules can only respond to ultraviolet (UV) or near-UV visible light with low penetration and high phototoxicity. We report that coumarin-based NO donors with maximal absorbances at 328 nm can be activated under (deep) red-light (630 or 700 nm) irradiation in the presence of palladium(II) tetraphenyltetrabenzoporphyrin, enabling stoichiometric and self-reporting NO release with a photolysis quantum yield of 8 % via photoredox catalysis. This NO-releasing platform with ciprofloxacin loading can eradicate Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm in vitro and treat cutaneous abscesses in vivo.

Abstract
Near-infrared (NIR) responsiveness is important for various applications. Currently, single-photon NIR-responsive systems are rare compared to systems that display two-photon absorption and triplet-triplet annihilation processes. Supramolecular stacking of photo-responsive chromophores results in decreased efficiency due to space-confinement effects. Herein we show that σ-platination of pentacenes is a feasible protocol to build single-photon NIR-responsive systems, with advantages including a low HOMO-LUMO energy gap, high photochemical efficiency, and pathway specificity. The pentacene-to-endoperoxidation transformation is accompanied by color and absorbance changes. The high photo-oxygenation efficiency of σ-platinated pentacenes facilitates NIR responsiveness in one-dimensional supramolecular polymers, resulting in the disappearance of supramolecular chirality signals and disruption of self-assembled nanofibers. Overall, the σ-platination strategy opens up new avenues toward NIR photo-responsive materials at the molecular and supramolecular levels.

Abstract
Triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA)-assisted photon upconversion (TTA-UC) in three dyads (DPA-Cn-DPA), comprised of two diphenylanthracene (DPA) moieties connected by nonconjugated C1, C2, and C3 linkages (Cn), has been investigated. The performance of these dyads as energy acceptors in the presence of the energy donor platinum octaethylporphyrin are characterized by longer triplet lifetimes (τT) and different TTA rate constants than those of the parent DPA. The larger τT of the linked systems, caused by "intramolecular energy hopping" in the triplet dyad 3DPA*-Cn-DPA, results in a low threshold intensity, a key characteristic of efficient TTA-UC.

Abstract
Photon upconversion based on triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA-UC) has attracted great attention due to its remarkable features including the high upconversion quantum yield, low threshold, and flexible combination of sensitizer and annihilator. Endowing TTA-UC with responsiveness will offer additional application dimensions; however, it is a challenge to develop annihilators with responsive features in the excited triplet state. Here we demonstrate the synthesis and photophysical behaviors of photofluorochromic annihilators derived from fluorescent diarylethenes. A series of turn-on mode fluorescent diarylethenes based on 1,2-bis(2-ethyl-1-benzothiophen-1,1-dioxide-3-yl)perfuorocyclopentene were synthesized, and their photochromism and photofluorochromism behaviors were thoroughly investigated. When sensitized by near-infrared ruthenium phthalocyanine, TTA-UC could be observed under excitation of 730 nm, accompanied by upconverted emission ranging from 500 to 700 nm. Because of the photoresponsive properties of the annihilators, TTA-UC can be switched between "on" and "off" by alternating irradiation of ultraviolet and visible light.

Abstract
Structure rearrangement processes, such as isomerization, are attracting extensive interest as a potential carrier in molecular scale electronics design. UV-light-triggered isomerization of Rydberg-excited propanal with two UV photons has been investigated with time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. By following the photoionization from 3s Rydberg states in the time domain, the ultrafast structural evolution and the corresponding photoisomerization dynamics are observed and tracked in real-time. The conversion barrier for isomerization from cis-propanal to gauche isomer is estimated to be about 1500 ± 100 cm-1 experimentally. Both the photoisomerization yield and the conversion rate have shown strong dependence on the excitation energy. It is observed that whether vibration modes are selectively excited or not, cis-to-gauche photoisomerization of propanal in 3s Rydberg state occurs once the excitation energy is higher than the conversion barrier without any vibrational excitation specificity. This yields a powerful approach to studying structural evolution dynamics in large molecules, which may have applications in molecular devices.

Abstract
Osmium(II) polypyridines are a well-known class of complexes with luminescent metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) excited states that are currently experiencing a revival due to their application potential in organic photoredox catalysis, triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion, and phototherapy. At the same time, there is increased interest in the development of photoactive complexes made from Earth-abundant rather than precious metals. Against this background, we present a homoleptic Mo(0) complex with a new diisocyanide ligand exhibiting different bite angles and a greater extent of π-conjugation than previously reported related chelates. This new design leads to deep red emission, which is unprecedented for homoleptic arylisocyanide complexes of group 6 metals. With a 3MLCT lifetime of 56 ns, an emission band maximum at 720 nm, and a photoluminescence quantum yield of 1.5% in deaerated toluene at room temperature, the photophysical properties are reminiscent of the prototypical [Os(2,2'-bipyridine)3]2+ complex. Under 635 nm irradiation with a cw-laser, the new Mo(0) complex sensitizes triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion of 9,10-diphenylanthracene (DPA), resulting in delayed blue fluorescence with an anti-Stokes shift of 0.93 eV. The photorobustness of the Mo(0) complex and the upconversion quantum yield are high enough to generate a flux of upconverted light that can serve as a sufficiently potent irradiation source for a blue-light-driven photoisomerization reaction. These findings are relevant in the greater contexts of designing new luminophores and photosensitizers for use in red-light-driven photocatalysis, photochemical upconversion, light-harvesting, and phototherapy.

Abstract
Sensitized triplet-triplet annihilation (sTTA) is the most promising mechanism for pooling the energy of two visible photons, but its applications in solution were so far limited to organic solvents, with a current maximum of the excited-singlet state energy of 3.6 eV. By combining tailor-made iridium complexes with naphthalenes, we demonstrate blue-light driven upconversion in water with unprecedented singlet-state energies approaching 4 eV. The annihilators have outstanding excited-state reactivities enabling challenging photoreductions driven by sTTA. Specifically, we found that an aryl-bromide bond activation can be achieved with blue photons, and we obtained full conversion for the very energy-demanding decomposition of a persistent ammonium compound as typical water pollutant, not only with a cw laser but also with an LED light source. These results provide the first proof-of-concept for the usage of low-power light sources for challenging reactions employing blue-to-UV upconversion in water and pave the way for the further development of sustainable light-harvesting applications.

Abstract
The development of red or near-infrared light (NIR) switchable photochromic molecules is required for an efficient utilization of sunlight and regulation of biological activities. While the photosensitization of photochromic molecules to red or NIR light has been achieved by a two-photon absorption process, the development of a molecule itself having sensitivity to red or NIR light has been now a challenging study. Herein, we developed an efficient molecular design for realizing red or NIR-light-responsive negative photochromism based on binaphthyl-bridged imidazole dimers. The introduction of electron-donating substituents shows the red shift of the absorption band at the visible-light region because of the contribution of a charge-transfer transition. Especially, the introduction of a di(4-methoxyphenyl)amino group (TPAOMe) and a perylenyl group largely shifts the absorption edge of the stable colored form to 900 nm. In addition, because the absorption band of one of the derivatives substituted with TPAOMe covers the whole visible-light region, the colored form shows a neutral gray color. Upon red (660 nm) or NIR-light (790 nm) irradiation, we observed the negative photochromic reaction from the stable colored form to the metastable colorless form. Therefore, the substituted binaphthyl-bridged imidazole dimers constitute the attractive photoswitches within a biological window.

Abstract
A dual-photoresponsive coordination polymer displaying color-distinguishable olefin/cyclobutane-linked pyridinium radical states through photoinduced electron transfer and photocycloaddition has been successfully assembled based on the monoquaternized trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene and electron-rich benzenetetra-carboxylate anion. The synergy of charge-transfer and cation-π interactions within the framework endows the compound with excellent stability toward high temperature (350 °C), acidic/basic environments (pH = 2-12) and organic solvents. Reversible recovery from the radical states to their initial states, and reverse-cyclization can be achieved upon heat-treatment.

Abstract
The energy of visible photons and the accessible redox potentials of common photocatalysts set thermodynamic limits to photochemical reactions that can be driven by traditional visible-light irradiation. UV excitation can be damaging and induce side reactions, hence visible or even near-IR light is usually preferable. Thus, photochemistry currently faces two divergent challenges, namely the desire to perform ever more thermodynamically demanding reactions with increasingly lower photon energies. The pooling of two low-energy photons can address both challenges simultaneously, and whilst multi-photon spectroscopy is well established, synthetic photoredox chemistry has only recently started to exploit multi-photon processes on the preparative scale. Herein, we have a critical look at currently developed reactions and mechanistic concepts, discuss pertinent experimental methods, and provide an outlook into possible future developments of this rapidly emerging area.

Abstract
The addition of stimuli-responsiveness to anti-Stokes emission provides a unique platform for biosensing and chemosensing. Particularly, stimuli-responsive photon upconversion based on triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA-UC) is promising due to its occurrence at low excitation intensity with high efficiency. This Minireview summarizes the recent developments of TTA-UC switching by external stimuli such as temperature, oxygen, chemicals, light, electric field, and mechanical force. For the systematic understanding of the underlying general mechanisms, the switching mechanisms are categorized into four types: 1) aggregation-induced UC; 2) assembly-induced air-stable UC; 3) diffusion-controlled UC; and 4) energy-transfer-controlled UC. The development of stimuli-responsive smart TTA-UC systems would enable sensing with unprecedented sensitivity and selectivity, and expand the scope of TTA-UC photochemistry by combination with supramolecular chemistry, materials chemistry, mechanochemistry, and biochemistry.

Abstract
Two photoswitchable compounds that can operate under visible light irradiation are prepared and investigated using spectroscopic and computational studies. These all-visible systems are based on the dimethyldihydropyrene (DHP)/cyclophanediene (CPD) photochromic couple connected either to a bipyridine (bpy) unit or to a (tris(bpy)ruthenium(II)) complex through a pyridinium bridge. In these compounds, the DHP to CPD isomerization and the reverse CPD to DHP conversion can be triggered by illumination with red (>630 nm) and blue (460 nm) lights, respectively. The unambiguous and reversible response of these systems triggered by visible light make them potential candidates for biological purposes and electronic devices.
