Abstract
The intramolecular coupling of dichloro-substituted helically fused anthracenes using the Yamamoto coupling yielded cyclized products with sterically congested molecular structures. The X-ray analysis and DFT calculations showed that the aromatic framework adopted a nonplanar structure with a twisted conformation about the newly formed single bond, which acts as a chiral axis. Interestingly, the X-ray structure obtained through the Hirshfeld atom refinement revealed short interatomic distances between the inner hydrogen atoms (1.648-1.692 Å), much shorter than the sum of their van der Waals radii. Owing to these unusually short contacts, the 1H NMR spectrum exhibited a significant deshielding (12.5 ppm) and a large nuclear Overhauser effect (44 %). Additionally, the IR spectrum displayed a high-frequency shift of the C-H stretching vibration. These observations, along with the noncovalent interaction plot indicative of a characteristic steric environment, strongly support the presence of steric hindrance. Moreover, dynamic NMR measurement of the mesityl-substituted derivative yielded a barrier to helical inversion of 84 kJ mol-1. The optical properties and crystal packing of the cyclized products are also reported.

Abstract
Experimental and theoretical study of the regioselectivity and mechanism of polycyclic aromatic amine (PAA) electrochemical oxidation is important for designing nitrogen doped large π-conjugated functional molecules. Herein, we used binary-, ternary-, and quaternary-fused PAAs as electro-oxidative reaction substrates to investigate the yield changes of carbazole and phenazine based aza-helicene other than oligomers, which were obtained through pyrrole and pyrazine annulation pathways. Combined with the restrained electrostatic potential (RESP) and steric hindrance factor analysis of the substrate, the electron spin density distribution of free radical resonance hybrid and the spin population analysis of the atoms in the structure of each free radical tautomer indicate that the degree of delocalized dispersion of N free radical and the resulting change in the spin density distribution of C free radical tautomers determine the reaction regioselectivity. The potential charge of the K-region, Bay-region, and L-region adjacent to the C(α)-C(β1) bond is higher than that of other regions within the molecule, and the charge in these high RESP regions tends to delocalize more strongly toward electron-deficient N free radicals. Thus, the activity of N-C(α)-C(β1) region is increased, which supports the proposed free radical addition and free radical coupling mechanism for the electro-oxidative reaction of PAA.

Abstract
A novel type of chiral redox disulfonate iron complex for asymmetric catalysis is reported. The [Fe((Ra)-BINSate)]+ (BINSate = 1,1'-binaphthalene-2,2'-disulfonate) complex effectively promotes the enantioselective oxidative cross-coupling between 2-naphthols (1) and 2-aminonaphthalene derivatives (2), affording optically enriched (Ra)-2-amino-2'-hydroxy-1,1'-binaphthyls (NOBINs) with exceptional yields and enantioselective ratios (up to 99% yield and 96:4 er). The [Fe((Ra)-BINSate)]+ catalyst was designed as a chiral version of FeCl3 with multicoordination sites available for binding the two coupling partners 1 and 2 as well as the oxidant. Our structure-selectivity and activity study, which covered most of the important positions in the NOBIN scaffold, revealed the effect of different substitution patterns on the coupling efficiency and stereoselectivity.

Abstract
In this study, a heterogeneous rhodium-catalyzed oxidative homocoupling reaction of anilines utilizing molecular oxygen as the sole oxidant is reported. Employing a commercially available and recyclable Rh/C catalyst enabled the oxidative dimerization of various anilines, including N,N-disubstituted and N-monosubstituted anilines, as well as diarylamines, triarylamines, and carbazoles. Additionally, the catalytic protocol was extended to the ortho-ortho coupling of anilines, affording 2,2'-diaminobiphenyls with high regioselectivity. Notably, the developed approach provides rapid access to diversely functionalized benzidines and diaminobiphenyls in an operationally simple, practical, and environmentally friendly manner.

Abstract
We have developed a catalytic system based on bianthrylbis(thiourea) for the asymmetric Henry reaction of fluoroketones and nitroalkanes that resulted from the screening of a library containing 31 chiral non-racemic organocatalysts. The corresponding adducts were isolated in up to 6 times shorter reaction time in comparison with the previously published organocatalysts. High levels of stereocontrol have been generally observed, with measured product enantiomeric excesses up to 97% and diastereomeric ratio 3 : 2 (anti/syn). The above-mentioned catalysts have been successfully applied to the total asymmetric synthesis of CF3-tethered (S)-halostachines, which has proved that this method constitutes an easy entry to similar enantiopure compounds.

Abstract
The full details of mechanistic investigation on enantioselective sulfenofunctionalization of alkenes under Lewis base catalysis are described. Solution spectroscopic identification of the catalytically active sulfenylating agent has been accomplished along with the spectroscopic identification of putative thiiranium ion intermediates generated in the enantiodetermining step. The structural insights gleaned from these studies informed the design of new catalyst architectures to improve enantioselectivity. In addition, structural modification of the sulfenylating agents had a significant and salutary effect on the enantioselectivity of sulfenofunctionalization which was demonstrated to be general for trans disubstituted alkenes. Whereas electronic modulation had little effect on the rate and selectivity, steric bulk on arylsulfenylphthalimides was very beneficial.

Abstract
The first heterogeneously catalyzed oxidative dehydrogenative cross-coupling of aryl amines is reported herein. 2-Naphthylamine analogues were reacted with various electron-rich arenes using a heterogeneous Rh/C catalyst under mild aerobic conditions, thus affording nonsymmetrical biaryl amines in excellent yields with high selectivities. This reaction provides a mild, operationally simple, and efficient approach for the synthesis of biaryls which are important to pharmaceutical and materials chemistry.

Abstract
For the first time the computed mechanisms for the novel reaction of 2-naphthol with N-methyl-N-phenylhydrazine, leading to 1-amino-2-naphthol (Tang et al., J Am Chem Soc 2008, 130, 5840), have been investigated using the density functional theory. Four distinct possible pathways were evaluated: two amination mechanisms with the attack of NH(2) group respectively at the α-position C1 and β-position C3 atoms of 2-naphthol (pathways 1 and 2) as well as two rearrangement processes with displacement of the phenolic hydroxyl group followed by the benzidine-like rearrangement at the α-position C1 and β-position C3 atoms of 2-naphthol, respectively (pathways 3 and 4). Solvent effect has been tested based on the optimized geometries of the stationary points in solution at the B3LYP/PCM/6-31+G(d,p) level of theory with an averaged dielectric constant of binary solvent. Single-point energies of the optimized structures have been calculated using three hybrid density functionals, B3LYP, MPW3LYP, and B3PW91 with the 6-311++G(3df,2p) basis set. Our computed results clearly manifest that pathway 1 (α-amination) has the highest possibility to occur, with the Gibbs free energies being lower by 6 to 20 kcal/mol compared with the other three pathways, which leads to 1-amino-2-naphthol and N-methylaniline as products. It is in excellent agreement with the experimental observation.

Abstract
Optically active 3,3'-dimethyl-2,2'-diamino-1,1'-binaphthyl (DM-DABN) and 3,3'-dimethyl-2-amino-2'-hydroxybinaphthyl (DM-NOBIN) derivatives were synthesized by Cu-(-)-sparteine complex-catalyzed enantioselective homo- and hetero-coupling of 2-naphthylamine, respectively. The difference in enantioselectivity was observed by changing the concentration of oxygen.

Abstract
An unexpected reaction of N,N-disubstituted hydrazine with naphthol and its analogues under simply thermal conditions has been disclosed. 2-Naphthol reacted with various N,N-disubstituted hydrazines under argon to afford 1-amino-2-naphthol and the corresponding secondary amines in excellent yields. Ortho amination of 2-naphthols, hydroxyquinoline, and naphthalenamine occurred when they reacted with N-methyl-N-phenylhydrazine.

Abstract
Diaryl hydrazides prepared from the Pd(0)- or Cu(I)-catalyzed coupling reactions of aryl hydrazides and aryl halides underwent the acid-catalyzed rearrangements to a series of previously unknown 2,2'-diaminobiaryls in good overall yields. The mildness of the reaction conditions allows the presence of various functional groups.
