Abstract
In this study, the heavy-atom-free BODIPY dendrimer TM4-BDP was synthesized for near-infrared photodynamic therapy, and was composed of a triphenylamine-BODIPY dimer and four 1-(2-morpholinoethyl)-1H-indole-3-ethenyl groups. The TM4-BDP could achieve near-infrared photodynamic therapy through two different photosensitive pathways, which include one-photon excitation at 660 nm and two-photon excitation at 1000 nm. In the one-photon excitation pathway, the TM4-BDP could generate singlet oxygen and superoxide radicals under 660 nm illumination. In addition, the one-photon PDT experiment in human nasopharyngeal carcinoma (CNE-2) cells also indicated that the TM4-BDP could specifically accumulate in lysosomes and show great cell phototoxicity with an IC50 of 22.1 μM. In the two-photon excitation pathway, the two-photon absorption cross-section at 1030 nm of TM4-BDP was determined to be 383 GM, which means that it could generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) under 1000 nm femtosecond laser excitation. Moreover, the two-photon PDT experiment in zebrafish also indicated the TM4-BDP could be used for two-photon fluorescence imaging and two-photon induced ROS generation in biological environments. Furthermore, in terms of the ROS generation mechanism, the TM4-BDP employed a novel spin-vibronic coupling intersystem crossing (SV-ISC) process for the mechanism of ROS generation and the femtosecond transient absorption spectra indicated that this novel SV-ISC mechanism was closely related to its charge transfer state lifetime. These above experiments of TM4-BDP demonstrate that the dendrimer design is an effective strategy for constructing heavy-atom-free BODIPY photosensitizers in the near-infrared region and lay the foundation for two-photon photodynamic therapy in future clinical trials.

Abstract
A series of Ln3+-metal centered complexes, Ln(TTA)3(DPPI) (Ln = La, 1; Ln = Eu, 2; Ln = Tb, 3; or Ln = Gd, 4) [(DPPI = N-(4-(1H-imidazo [4,5-f][1,10]phenanthrolin-2-yl)phenyl)-N-phenylbenzenamine) and (TTA = 2-Thenoyltrifluoroacetone)] have been synthesized and characterized. Among which, the Eu3+-complex shows efficient purity red luminescence in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) solution, with a Commission International De L’ Eclairage (CIE) coordinate at x = 0.638, y = 0.323 and ΦEuL = 38.9%. Interestingly, increasing the amounts of triethylamine (TEA) in the solution regulates the energy transfer between the ligand and the Eu3+-metal center, which further leads to the luminescence color changing from red to white, and then bluish-green depending on the different excitation wavelengths. Based on this, we have designed the IMPLICATION logic gate for TEA recognition by applying the amounts of TEA and the excitation wavelengths as the dual input signal, which makes this Eu3+-complex a promising candidate for TEA-sensing optical sensors.

Abstract
A broadband visible light-absorbing [70]fullerene-BODIPY-triphenylamine triad (C70-B-T) has been synthesized and applied as a heavy atom-free organic triplet photosensitizer for photooxidation. By attaching two triphenylmethyl amine units (TPAs) to the π-core of BODIPY via ethynyl linkers, the absorption range of the antenna is extended to 700 nm with a peak at 600 nm. Thus, the absorption spectrum of C70-B-T almost covers the entire UV-visible region (270-700 nm). The photophysical processes are investigated by means of steady-state and transient spectroscopies. Upon photoexcitation at 339 nm, an efficient energy transfer (ET) from TPA to BODIPY occurs both in C70-B-T and B-T, resulting in the appearance of the BODIPY emission at 664 nm. Direct or indirect (via ET) excitation of the BODIPY-part of C70-B-T is followed by photoinduced ET from the antenna to C70, thus the singlet excited state of C70 (1C70*) is populated. Subsequently, the triplet excited state of C70 (3C70*) is produced via the intrinsic intersystem crossing of C70. The photooxidation ability of C70-B-T was studied using 1,5-dihydroxy naphthalene (DHN) as a chemical sensor. The photooxidation efficiency of C70-B-T is higher than that of the individual components of C70-1 and B-T, and even higher than that of methylene blue (MB). The photooxidation rate constant of C70-B-T is 1.47 and 1.51 times as that of C70-1 and MB, respectively. The results indicate that the C70-antenna systems can be used as another structure motif for a heavy atom-free organic triplet photosensitizer.

Abstract
2-(2'-Hydroxyphenyl)benzazole (HBX) fluorophores are well-known excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) emitters largely studied for their synthetic versatility, photostability, strong solid-state fluorescence and ability to engineer dual emission, thus paving the way to applications as white emitters, ratiometric sensors, and cryptographic dyes. However, they are heavily quenched in solution, due to efficient non-radiative pathways taking place as a consequence of the proton transfer in the excited-state. In this contribution, the nature of the heteroring constitutive of these rigidified HBX dyes was modified and we demonstrate that this simple structural modification triggers major optical changes in terms of emission color, dual emission engineering, and importantly, fluorescent quantum yield. Investigation of the photophysical properties in solution and in the solid state of a series of ethynyl-TIPS extended HBX fluorophores, along with ab initio calculations demonstrate the very promising abilities of these dyes to act as bright dual-state emitters, in both solution (even in protic environments) and solid state.

Abstract
A panchromatic triad, consisting of benzothiazole (BTZ) and BF2 -chelated boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) moieties covalently linked to a zinc porphyrin (ZnP) core, has been synthesized and systematically characterized by using 1 H NMR spectroscopy, ESI-MS, UV-visible, steady-state fluorescence, electrochemical, and femtosecond transient absorption techniques. The absorption band of the triad, BTZ-BODIPY-ZnP, and dyads, BTZ-BODIPY and BODIPY-ZnP, along with the reference compounds BTZ-OMe, BODIPY-OMe, and ZnP-OMe exhibited characteristic bands corresponding to individual chromophores. Electrochemical measurements on BTZ-BODIPY-ZnP exhibited redox behavior similar to that of the reference compounds. Upon selective excitation of BTZ (≈290 nm) in the BTZ-BODIPY-ZnP triad, the fluorescence of the BTZ moiety is quenched, due to photoinduced energy transfer (PEnT) from 1 BTZ* to the BODIPY moiety, followed by quenching of the BODIPY emission due to sequential PEnT from the 1 BODIPY* moiety to ZnP, resulting in the appearance of the ZnP emission, indicating the occurrence of a two-step singlet-singlet energy transfer. Further, a supramolecular tetrad, BTZ-BODIPY-ZnP:ImC60 , was formed by axially coordinating the triad with imidazole-appended fulleropyrrolidine (ImC60 ), and parallel steady-state measurements displayed the diminished emission of ZnP, which clearly indicated the occurrence of photoinduced electron transfer (PET) from 1 ZnP* to ImC60 . Finally, femtosecond transient absorption spectral studies provided evidence for the sequential occurrence of PEnT and PET events, namely, 1 BTZ* -BODIPY-ZnP:ImC60 →BTZ-1 BODIPY* -ZnP:ImC60 →BTZ-BODIPY-1 ZnP* :ImC60 →BTZ-BODIPY-ZnP.+ :ImC60 .- in the supramolecular tetrad. The evaluated rate of energy transfer, kEnT , was found to be 3-5×1010 s-1 , which was slightly faster than that observed in the case of BODIPY-ZnP and BTZ-BODIPY-ZnP, lacking the coordinated ImC60 . The rate constants for charge separation and recombination, kCS and kCR , respectively, calculated by monitoring the rise and decay of C60 .- were found to be 5.5×1010 and 4.4×108 s-1 , respectively, for the BODIPY-ZnP:ImC60 triad, and 3.1×1010 and 4.9×108 s-1 , respectively, for the BTZ-BODIPY-ZnP:ImC60 tetrad. Initial excitation of the tetrad, promoting two-step energy transfer and a final electron-transfer event, has been successfully demonstrated in the present study.

Abstract
Generation of triplet excited states through radical pair intermediates has been extensively studied in molecular complexes. Similar schemes remain rare in hybrid structures of quantum dot-organic molecules, despite intense recent interest of quantum dot sensitized triplet excited state generation. Herein, we demonstrate that the efficiency of the intersystem crossing from the singlet to the triplet state in boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) can be enhanced in CdSe quantum dot-BODIPY complexes through a radical pair intermediate state consisting of an unpaired electron in the quantum dot conduction band and that in oxidized BODIPY. By transient absorption spectroscopy, we show that the excitation of BODIPY with 650 nm light leads to the formation of a charge separated state by electron transfer from BODIPY to CdSe (with a time constant of 6.33 ± 1.13 ns), competing with internal conversion to the ground state within BODIPY, and the radical pair state decays subsequently by back charge recombination to generate a triplet excited state (with a time constant of 158 ± 28 ns) or the ground state of BODIPY. The overall quantum efficiency of BODIPY triplet excited state generation was determined to be (27.2 ± 3.0)%. The findings of efficient triplet state formation and intermediate radical pair states in this hybrid system suggest that quantum dot-molecule complexes may be a promising platform for spintronics applications.

Abstract
Fluorescent probes are powerful tools for detecting and mapping the species of interest in vitro and in vivo. Although the probes always show high selectivity and sensitivity, they are usually affected by some factors, such as detecting conditions and the probe concentrations. Ratiometric fluorescent strategies, possessing advantage of low background noise, would solve the problem effectively and lead to a higher sensing performance. Thus, an ESIPT-based ratiometric probe (HBTP-mito) was developed on the basis of a phosphorylated 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)-benzothiazole derivative for the determination of ALP activity. HBTP-mito is water soluble and emits green fluorescence in TBS buffer due to the blockage of ESIPT. Upon the introduction of ALP, the phosphate ester of HBTP-mito was hydrolyzed and the ESIPT process was restored. Accordingly, the fluorescence at 514 nm decreases, while emission at 650 nm shows a "turn-on" response. The ratio of intensity (I514nm/I650nm) decreases linearly with ALP activity increasing from 0 to 60 mU/mL, obtained an LOD of 0.072 mU/mL. The favorable performance of the probe enables its application not only in the detection of ALP activity in biological samples, but also in the localization of the ALP levels in living cells and in vivo.

Abstract
Hybrid meso BODIPY dyes are synthesized and their linear and non-linear optical properties are studied. Time-resolved fluorescence lifetime decay is found to be identical for all dyes irrespective of meso substituents. The Z-scan experiment performed to calculate the nonlinear absorption coefficient (β) and third-order nonlinear susceptibility (χ3). Global hybrid (B3LYP and BHHLYP) and range-separated hybrid (CAM-B3LYP) functional with the basis set 6-311++G(d,p) was employed to determine the theoretical linear and non-linear optical properties. The computed β0 value of all the three dyes was found to be superior to that of urea (βo = 0.371 × 10-30 esu). Introduction of meso substituent directly affects the polarizability and second-order hyperpolarizability of the dyes. Thermal and reorientational effect of the investigated NLOphoric dyes were studied.

Abstract
Here, we report separately enhanced dual emissions of the amphiphilic derivative of 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazole (denoted as HBT-11) by supramolecular complexation with cyclodextrins (CDs). When dispersed in water, HBT-11 shows two relatively weak emission bands, which can be assigned to the emissions of enol- and keto-forms, the two tautomers, owing to excited-state intramolecular proton transfers. Upon the addition of α-CD and β-CD, the keto- and enol-emissions, respectively, are separately enhanced; the enhancement effect is due to the formation of HBT-11/α-CD and HBT-11/β-CD complexes through multiple hydrogen bonding and host-guest interactions, respectively. It is worth to note that the keto-emission caused by the complex of HBT-11/α-CD has a much shorter wavelength compared with that of the aggregates formed by pure HBT-11. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that a study on keto-emission of the isolated HBT chromophore has been reported.

Abstract
Photoactivatable fluorophores have become an important technique for the high spatiotemporal resolution of biological imaging. Here, we developed a novel photoactivatable probe (PHBT), which is based on 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazole (HBT), a small organic fluorophore known for its classic luminescence mechanism through excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) with the keto form and the enol form. After photocleavage, PHBT released a ratiometric fluorophore HBT, which showed dual emission bands with more than 73-fold fluorescence enhancement at 512 nm in buffer and more than 69-fold enhancement at 452 nm in bovine serum. The probe displayed a high ratiometric imaging resolution and is believed to have a wide application in biological imaging.

Abstract
2-(o-Amidophenyl)oxa- and -thiazolines undergo excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT), generating aza-o-xylylenes capable of intramolecular [4+2] and [4+4] cycloadditions with tethered unsaturated pendants. Facile hydrolysis of the primary photoproducts, spiro-oxazolidines and thiazolidines, under mild conditions unmasks a phenone functionality. Variations in linkers allow for access to diverse core scaffolds in the primary photoproducts, rendering the approach compatible with the philosophy of diversity-oriented synthesis. Chiral oxazolines, readily available from the corresponding amino alcohols, yield enantioenriched keto-polyheterocycles of complex topologies with enantiomeric excess values up to 90%.

Abstract
A series of β,β'-bicyclo-3,5-diaryl-BODIPYs were synthesized from the corresponding β,β'-bicyclo-3,5-diiodo-BODIPYs (1a,b) via Pd(0)-mediated Suzuki cross-coupling reactions in 82-92% yields. Subsequent aromatization with DDQ afforded the corresponding β,β'-dibenzo-aryl-BODIPYs, which showed red-shifted absorptions and emissions in the near-IR range. The dibenzo-appended BODIPYs showed characteristic 1H-, 13C-, 11B- and 19F-NMR shifts, and nearly planar conformations by X-ray crystallography.

Abstract
A new white-light-emitting molecule (1) was synthesized and characterized by NMR spectroscopy, high resolution mass spectrometry, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound 1 crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pnma, with a = 12.6814(6), b = 7.0824(4), c = 17.4628(9) Å, α = 90°, β = 90°, γ = 90°. In the crystal, molecules are linked by weak intermolecular C-H···O hydrogen bonds, forming an infinite chain along [100], generating a C(10) motif. Compound 1 possesses an intramolecular six-membered-ring hydrogen bond, from which excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) takes place from the phenolic proton to the carbonyl oxygen, resulting in a tautomer that is in equilibrium with the normal species, exhibiting a dual emission that covers almost all of the visible spectrum and consequently generates white light. It exhibits one irreversible one-electron oxidation and two irreversible one-electron reductions in dichloromethane at modest potentials. Furthermore, the geometric structures, frontier molecular orbitals (MOs), and the potential energy curves (PECs) for 1 in the ground and the first singlet excited state were fully rationalized by density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations. The results demonstrate that the forward and backward ESIPT may happen on a similar timescale, enabling the excited-state equilibrium to be established.
