Abstract
The micellar catalysis of a model Claisen-Schmidt aldol condensation reaction using heterogeneous nanoreactors based on cationic azobenzene trimethylammonium bromide (AzoTAB) photosurfactants is investigated. Under UV irradiation, AzoTABs undergo a trans-cis photoisomerisation, which changes not only the critical micelle concentration, but also the shape and size of the micelle. The effect of surfactant structure (tail and spacer lengths), concentration and temperature on the reaction yield were investigated. Monitoring of the zeta potential during the reaction indicated that it proceeds at the micelle/water interface for AzoTABs, with the enolate intermediate stabilised in micelle/water interface (i.e. the Stern layer). The reaction yield was found to correlate directly to micellar shape and size, with smaller, more spherical micelles typical of cis-AzoTABs favouring higher reaction efficiencies.

Abstract
Molecular photoswitches capable of reversible photoswitching in aqueous media are highly demanded for various biological applications and photopharmacology. Carbohydrates, as natural and abundant raw materials, provide opportunity to make photoswitches water-soluble through linking sugar to the photoswitching molecules. We have developed a one-pot synthesis method to prepare water-soluble glycosyl azobenzenes through DMC (2-chloro-1,3-dimethylimidazolinium chloride)-mediated glycosylation between sugar and dihydroxyazobenzenes (DHABs) in aqueous media. The scope of the method has been investigated with different mono- and disaccharides, as well as with p,p'- and o,o'-DHAB, with excellent 1,2-trans stereoselectivity. Diglycosylation products can also be obtained with an excess amount of monosaccharides in one step. We have also demonstrated the possibility of further functionalization on the azobenzene moiety of glycosyl azobenzene. Both mono- and diglycosyl azobenzenes showed excellent photoswitching properties in water with high fatigue resistance and good thermostability for the Z-isomers. Excellent E → Z photoisomerization of both mono- and diglycosylated azobenzenes (Z/E = 99/1) is observed under illumination at 365 nm, while back Z → E photoisomerization can be achieved with blue light (with E/Z = 80/20 at PSS485 for the diglycosyl derivative).

Abstract
Azobenzene photoswitches are valuable tools for controlling properties of molecular systems with light. We have been investigating azobenzene glycoconjugates to probe carbohydrate-protein interactions and to design glycoazobenzene macrocycles with chiroptical and physicochemical properties modulated by light irradiation. To date, direct conjugation of glycosides to azobenzenes was performed by reactions providing target compounds in limited yields. We therefore sought a more effective and reliable coupling method. In this paper, we report on a straightforward thioarylation of azobenzene derivatives with glycosyl thiols as well as other thiols, thereby increasing the scope of azobenzene conjugation. Even challenging unsymmetrical conjugates can be achieved in good yields via sequential or one-pot procedures. Importantly, red-shifted azoswitches, which are addressed with visible light, were easily functionalized. Additionally, by oxidation of the sulfide bridge to the respective sulfones, both the photochromic and the thermal relaxation properties of the core azobenzene can be tuned. Utilizing this option, we realized orthogonal three-state photoswitching in mixtures containing two distinct azobenzene thioglycosides.

Abstract
Azobenzene-containing surfactants (azo-surfactants) have garnered significant attention for their use in generating photoresponsive foams, interfaces, and colloidal systems. The photoresponsive behavior of azo-surfactants is driven by the conformational and electronic changes that occur when the azobenzene chromophore undergoes light-induced trans ⇌ cis isomerization. Effective design of surfactants and targeting of their properties requires a robust understanding of how the azobenzene functionality interacts with surfactant structure and influences overall surfactant behavior. Herein, a library of tail substituted azo-surfactants were synthesized and studied to better understand how surfactant structure can be tailored to exploit the azobenzene photoswitch. This work shows that tail group structure (length and branching) has a profound influence on the critical micelle concentration of azo-surfactants and their properties once adsorbed to an air-water interface. Neutron scattering studies revealed the unique role that intermolecular π-π azobenzene interactions have on the self-assembly of azo-surfactants, and how the influence of these interactions can be tuned using tail group structure to target specific aqueous aggregate morphologies.

Abstract
Azobenzenes appended with a redox-active arylamino group (redox auxiliary, RA) are prepared and shown to undergo fast, complete, and catalytic Z→E azo isomerization upon electron loss from the RA unit of the azobenzene. The RA-azo structures can be reversibly (E→Z→E)n cycled by sequential photo- and electrostimulation. Due to the robust nature of the RA•+-azo radical cation chain carrying species, initiation of electron transfer (ET) catalysis occurs at low levels (1.0-0.04 mol %) of catalytic loading and is effective even at Z-RA-azo concentrations of 10-4-10-5 M, yielding TONs (turnover numbers) of 100-2300 under such dilute conditions. The RA-azo Z→E conversion is demonstrated using chemical oxidation (redox switching), electrochemical oxidation (electro switching), and photochemical oxidation (photoredox switching). The Z→E acceleration is shown to be at least 2 × 109-fold for RA-azo 5. DFT calculations on methyl yellow suggest that a N-centered radical cation of the RA group stabilizes the Z→E N-N twist transition state of the RA•+-azo, yielding a large reduction in the barrier for RA•+-azo compared to neutral RA-azo. The RA-azo structure class has nanomechanical features that can be toggled with photo- and electrostimulation, the latter offering a quick switch for complete Z→E conversion.

Abstract
Azobenzenes are photochromic molecules that possess a large range of applications. Their syntheses are usually simple and fast, and their purifications can be easy to perform. Oligosaccharide is also a wide family of biopolymer constituted of linear chain of saccharides. It can be extracted from biomass, as for cellulose, being the principal constituent of plant cell wall, or it can be enzymatically produced as for cyclodextrins, having properties not far from cellulose. Combining these two materials families can afford interesting applications such as controlled drug-release systems, photochromic liquid crystals, photoresponsive films or even fluorescent indicators. This review will compile the different syntheses of azo-dyes-grafted oligosaccharides, and will show their various applications.

Abstract
Photoresponsive glycoconjugates based on the azobenzene photoswitch are valuable molecules which can be used as tools for the investigation of carbohydrate–protein interactions or as precursors of shape-switchable molecular architectures, for example. To access such compounds, glycosylation of 4,4′-dihydroxyazobenzene (DHAB) is a critical step, frequently giving heterogeneous results because DHAB is a challenging glycosyl acceptor. Therefore, DHAB glucosylation was studied using nine different glycosyl donors, and reaction conditions were systematically varied in order to find a reliable procedure, especially towards the preparation of azobenzene bis-glucosides. Particular emphasis was put on glucosyl donors which were differentiated at the primary 6-position (N3, OAc) for further functionalisation. The present study allowed us to identify suitable glycosyl donors and reaction conditions matching with DHAB, affording the bis-glycosylated products in fair yields and good stereocontrol. The glycosylation of 4,4′-dihydroxyazobenzene was investigated to identify suitable conditions providing access to valuable photoswitchable glycoconjugates.![]()

Abstract
The Schmidt reaction has been an efficient and widely used synthetic approach to amides and nitriles since its discovery in 1923. However, its application often entails the use of volatile, potentially explosive, and highly toxic azide reagents. Here, we report a sequence whereby triflic anhydride and formic and acetic acids activate the bulk chemical nitromethane to serve as a nitrogen donor in place of azides in Schmidt-like reactions. This protocol further expands the substrate scope to alkynes and simple alkyl benzenes for the preparation of amides and nitriles.

Abstract
Recent developments over the past few years in aqueous micellar catalysis are discussed. Applications to problems in synthesis are highlighted, enabled by the use of surfactants that self-aggregate in water into micelles as nanoreactors. These include amphiphiles that have been available for some time, as well as those that have been newly designed. Reactions catalyzed by transition metals, including Pd, Cu, Rh, and Au, are of particular focus.

Abstract
A one-pot O-alkylation mediated macrocyclization approach has been used for the synthesis of carbohydrate-based macrocyclic azobenzene. The synthesized macrocycle can be reversibly isomerized between E and Z isomers upon UV or visible irradiation with excellent photostability and thermal stability (t1/2 =51 days at 20 °C for the Z isomer). A chirality transfer from the chiral sugar unit to azobenzene was observed by circular dichroism (CD). DFT and TD-DFT calculations were performed to calculate the optimal geometry and the theoretical absorption and CD spectra. Comparison of the experimental CD spectra with the theoretical ones suggests that both E- and Z-macrocycles adopt preferentially P-helicity for the azobenzene moiety. Furthermore, the macrocycle showed gelation ability in cyclohexane and ethanol with multistimuli-responsive behavior upon exposure to environmental stimuli including thermal-, photo-, and mechanical responses. Moreover, these organogels display temperature-dependent helical inversion, which can be tuned by a repeated heating-cooling procedure.

Abstract
The first example of a Pd-catalyzed Tsuji-Trost reaction, applied in a photochromic micellar media under conventional heating and microwave irradiation, is reported. The surfactant activity and recycling ability were investigated and compared with those of a few commercially available surfactants. The synthetic photochromic surfactant proved to be efficient, recyclable, and versatile for Pd-catalyzed coupling reactions.

Diastereoselective [2+2] photocycloaddition of chiral cyclic enones with olefins in aqueous media using surfactants. Molecules 2013; 18:1626-37. Abstract
We conducted diastereodifferentiating [2+2] photocycloadditions of cyclo-hexenones modified with a chiral 8-(p-methoxy phenyl)menthyl auxiliary with olefins in water. Although the photoreaction didn't proceed at all in pure water owing to very low solubility, the use of surfactants [sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) or dodecylamine hydrochloride (DAH)] and additive (organic solvent) enabled the reactions to progress with moderate to high conversions and yields. Furthermore, we synthesized a new menthol derivative substrate containing a (p-octyloxy)phenyl group for enhancing hydrophobicity, and elucidated that this new substrate was found to be a suitable chiral auxiliary in this asymmetric photoreaction in aqueous system. The additive effect of organic molecules on the yield and diastereoselectivity of the photo-adducts is also discussed.
