Abstract
A visible-light-mediated C-H arylation of substituted 1,4-napthoquinones (1,4-SNQ) and 1,2-napthoquinone (1,2-NQ) with diazonium salt using a photocatalyst eosin Y at room temperature in a single step (isolated yield of ≥75%) is described in this report. The rate-determining step of the reaction is aryl radical generation, which was trapped by high-resolution mass spectrometry. Cost-effectiveness, operational simplicity, a short reaction time, high atom economy, and a good yield make this photoredox-mediated process a valuable alternative to the transition-metal (Fe, Cu, Pd, etc.)-catalyzed reaction.

Abstract
An atom-economical approach for the synthesis of arylquinones was achieved successfully via direct oxidative C–C dehydrogenative coupling reaction of quinones/hydroquinones with electron-rich arenes using an inexpensive Fe–I2–(NH4)2S2O8 system. The efficiency of this catalytic approach was established with a broad scope of substrates involving quinones and hydroquinones to give high yields (60–89%) of several arylated quinones. The present protocol is simple, practical, and shows good functional group tolerance. The synthesis of arylquinones was achieved via direct oxidative C–H/C–H cross-coupling of quinones/hydroquinones with electron-rich arenes using Fe–I2–(NH4)2S2O8 system involving quinones/hydroquinones to give high yields (60–89%) of arylquinones.![]()

Abstract
A diversity-oriented synthesis of hydroxylated aryl-quinones via CH oxygenation reactions and their evaluation against Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiological agent of Chagas disease, was accomplished. With the use of ruthenium(II)- or palladium(II)-based catalysts, complementary regioselectivities were observed in the hydroxylation reactions and we have identified 9 compounds more potent than benznidazole (Bz) among these novel arylated and hydroxylated quinones. For instance, 5-hydroxy-2-[4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]-1,4-naphthoquinone (4h) with an IC50/24 h value of 22.8 µM is 4.5-fold more active than the state-of-the-art drug Bz. This article provides the first example of the application of CH activation for the position-selective hydroxylation of arylated quinones and the identification of these compounds as trypanocidal drug candidates.

Abstract
Arylation methods based on the generation and use of aryl radicals have been a rapidly growing field of research in recent years and currently represent a powerful strategy for carbon – carbon and carbon – heteroatom bond formation. The progress in this field is related to advances in the methods for generation of aryl radicals. The currently used aryl radical precursors include aryl halides, aryldiazonium and diaryliodonium salts, arylcarboxylic acids and their derivatives, arylboronic acids, arylhydrazines, organosulfur(II, VI) compounds and some other compounds. Aryl radicals are generated under mild conditions by single electron reduction or oxidation of precursors induced by conventional reagents, visible light or electric current. A crucial role in the development of the radical arylation methodology belongs to photoredox processes either catalyzed by transition metal complexes or organic dyes or proceeding without catalysts. Unlike the conventional transition metal-catalyzed arylation methods, radical arylation reactions proceed very often at room temperature and have high functional group tolerance. Without claiming to be exhaustive, this review covers the most important advances of the current decade in the generation and synthetic applications of (het)aryl radicals. Examples of reactions are given and mechanistic insights are highlighted.

Abstract
The 2,6'-bijuglone natural product diospyrin and its unnatural 3,6'-isomer idospyrin have been synthesized in seven steps each from N,N-diethylsenecioamide in overall yields of 12% and 13%, respectively. The syntheses diverge from ramentaceone (7-methyljuglone) and include a key Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling. Diospyrin, idospyrin, and several synthetic precursors exhibit potent and selective cytotoxicity to the murine myeloma NS-1 cell line over neonatal foreskin cells.

Abstract
Ammonium chloride-mediated trifluoromethylthiolation of p-quinone methides is reported using inexpensive and bench stable AgSCF3 as a nucleophilic trifluoromethylthiolating (-SCF3) reagent. This method is an efficient strategy for the construction of the benzylic C(sp3)-SCF3 bond to synthesize trifluoromethylthio-diarylmethane derivatives by 1,6-conjugate addition/aromatization under mild reaction conditions without any metal catalyst, oxidants, or additives. This is the first report of trifluoromethylthiolation of p-quinone methides. In addition, di-trifluoromethylthiolation of δ-chloro-p-quinone methide and scalability are demonstrated.

Abstract
A copper-catalysed cascade ester amidation/radical cyclization of 2-amino-1,4-naphthoquinones with α-bromocarboxylates to afford benzo[f]indole-2,4,9(3H)-triones is described, and the reaction has a broad substrate scope and the desired products are obtained in mostly moderate to good yields. Mechanism-probing experiments indicate that the otherwise challenging radical coupling reaction of α-bromocarboxylates with 2-amino-1,4-naphthoquinones is facilitated by a 5-endo radical cyclization.

Abstract
Malaria and tuberculosis are still among the leading causes of death in low-income countries. The 1,4-naphthoquinone (NQ) scaffold can be found in a variety of anti-infective agents. Herein, we report an optimised, high yield process for the preparation of various 2-arylnaphthoquinones by a palladium-catalysed Suzuki reaction. All synthesised compounds were evaluated for their in-vitro antiprotozoal and antimycobacterial activity. Antiprotozoal activity was assessed against Plasmodium falciparum (P.f.) NF54 and Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense (T.b.r.) STIB900, and antimycobacterial activity against Mycobacterium smegmatis (M.s.) mc2 155. Substitution with pyridine and pyrimidine rings significantly increased antiplasmodial potency of our compounds. The 2-aryl-NQs exhibited trypanocidal activity in the nM range with a very favourable selectivity profile. (Pseudo)halogenated aryl-NQs were found to have a pronounced effect indicating inhibition of mycobacterial efflux pumps. Cytotoxicity of all compounds towards L6 cells was evaluated and the respective selectivity indices (SI) were calculated. In addition, the physicochemical parameters of the synthesised compounds were discussed.

Abstract
Since the landmark work of Heck, Negishi and Suzuki on Pd-catalyzed crossing coupling reactions, innovative discovery of new reactions forming C-C bonds and constructing functional olefins via nonmetal catalysts remains an imperative area in organic chemistry. Herein, we report a transition-metal-free arylation method of vinyl pinacolboronates with diaryliodonium salts to form C(sp2)-C(sp2) bond and provide trans-arylvinylboronates. The resulting vinylboronates can further react with the remaining aryl iodides (generated from diaryliodonium salts) via Suzuki coupling to afford functional olefins, offering an efficient use of aryliodonium salts. Computational mechanistic studies suggest radical-pair pathway of the diaryliodonium salts promoted by the multi-functional wet carbonate.

Abstract
By using vicinal aryl sulfonamide substituted diaryliodonium salts, a cascade of desulfonylation/aryl migration was promoted by triethylamine in the synthesis of sterically hindered biarylamines, which operated via a radical-induced reaction pathway. The products were readily converted into a variety of important synthons. Furthermore, coupling reactions of N-methyl biarylamine and 1,6-dibromopyrene provided a potentially attractive molecule in OLEDs.

Abstract
A metal free and highly regioselective oxidative arylation reaction of fluorophenols is described. The relative position of the fluoride leaving group (i.e., ortho or para) controls the 1,2 or 1,4 nature of the arylated quinone product, lending versatility and generality to this oxidative, defluorinative, arylation concept.

Abstract
A mild, efficient and transition-metal free synthetic strategy has been developed for the α-arylation of 4-aminocoumarins using arynes as an aryl source. This synthetic strategy proceeds via C(sp2)–C(sp2) bond formation between 4-aminocoumarins and aryne precursors in a single step in the absence of a metal-catalyst.

Abstract
Palladium-catalysed competitive three-component C–H functionalisation reactions and cascade coupling ring-closing reactions of quinones with iodophenols in dihaloalkanes are described. During initial attempts to conduct C–H functionalisation reactions of quinones with iodophenols in dihaloalkanes, surprisingly a three-component C–H functionalisation reaction was discovered. Furthermore, as the reaction of chloroquinones with iodophenols was in progress, another surprising cascade coupling with ring closure was achieved. This provided an efficient single-step synthesis of naphtho[2,3- b]benzofuran-6,11-diones.

Abstract
Under oxidative conditions, 1,4-dihydropyridines (DHPs) undergo a homolytic cleavage, forming exclusively a Csp3-centered radical that can engage in the C-H alkylation of heterocyclic bases and 1,4-quinones. DHPs are readily prepared from aldehydes, and considering that aldehydes normally require harsh reaction conditions to take part in such transformations, with mixtures of alkylated and acylated products often being obtained, this net decarbonylative alkylation approach becomes particularly useful. The present method takes place under mild reaction conditions and requires only persulfate as a stoichiometric oxidant, making the procedure suitable for the late-stage C-H alkylation of complex molecules. Notably, structurally complex pharmaceutical agents could be functionalized or prepared with this protocol, such as the antimalarial Atovaquone and antitheilerial Parvaquone, thus evidencing its applicability. Mechanistic studies revealed a likely radical chain process via the formation of a dearomatized intermediate, providing a deeper understanding of the factors governing the reactivity of these radical forebears.

Abstract
Aromatic rings are found in a wide variety of products, including pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and functional materials. Diaryliodonium salts are new reagents used to transfer aryl groups under both metal-free and metal-catalyzed reactions and thereby synthesize arene-containing compounds. This minireview focuses on recent studies in selective aryl transfer reactions from unsymmetrical diaryliodonium salts under metal-free conditions. Reactions reported from 2007 to 2017, which represents a period of significant growth in diaryliodonium salt chemistry, are presented and organized by the type of reactive intermediate formed in the reaction. Specifically, reactions involving λ3 -iodane, λ3 -iodane radical anions, aryl radicals, and arynes are discussed. Chemoselectivity trends in aryl transfer are compared and contrasted across reaction intermediates and translation to potential auxiliaries are posited.
