Abstract
A recently synthesised novel macrocycle composed of four quinoline units called TEtraquinoline (TEQ) (J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2023, 145(4), 2609-2618) was reported to exhibit transition metal complexation ability. Meanwhile, there is a growing interest in different binding motifs for radioactive and toxic actinides. In this study, we modelled high-valent actinyl (AnO2)n+, An = U, Np, Pu; n = 1, 2, 3 complexes of TEQ and studied their geometric and electronic properties using scalar relativistic density functional theory (SR-DFT). The calculated results showed that the equatorial An-N and axial AnO bonds were polar bonds with a high degree of covalence, the former being longer than the latter. Natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis of the An-N bond orders decreased from complexes of uranyl to plutonyl and from complexes of heptavalent to pentavalent actinyls. This was due to the localization of the 5f orbital in the heavier actinyl and the high charge on An. The charge analysis showed a ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) on complexation. It was interesting to observe metal-to-ligand spin delocalization only in the [AnVI/VIIO2L]2+/3+ complexes, where the spin density on An was observed to increase on complexation. Based on the assigned oxidation states, it was observed that the heptavalent neptunyl cation retained its formal high oxidation state on complexation with TEQ. The energetics associated with the formation reaction of all the actinyl-TEQ complexes suggest spontaneity at lower temperatures (i.e., lower than 298.15 K). The energy decomposition analysis (EDA) indicates that the electrostatic energy contributions were predominant in the [AnVO2L]+ complexes, while covalent (orbital) energy contributions were higher in the [AnVIO2L]2+ and [AnVIIO2L]3+ complexes. The extended transition state-natural orbitals for chemical valence (ETS-NOCV) analysis confirmed the prominent covalent character in [AnVIIO2L]3+ over [AnVIO2L]2+ and [AnVO2L]+and the back donation of charges from An to N that stabilizes TEQ.

Abstract
Photopolymerization is an active research field enabling to polymerize in greener conditions than that performed with traditional thermal polymerization. At present, a great deal of effort is devoted to developing visible light photoinitiating systems. Indeed, the traditional UV photoinitiating systems are currently the focus of numerous safety concerns so alternatives to UV light are being actively researched. However, visible light photons are less energetic than UV photons so the reactivity of the photoinitiating systems should be improved to address this issue. In this field, furane constitutes an interesting candidate for the design of photocatalysts of polymerization due to its low cost and its easy chemical modification. In this review, an overview concerning the design of furane-based photoinitiators is provided. Comparisons with reference systems are also established to demonstrate evidence of the interest of these photoinitiators in innovative structures.

Abstract
The replacement of one or more pyrrolic building block(s) of a porphyrin by a nonpyrrolic heterocycle leads to the formation of so-called pyrrole-modified porphyrins (PMPs), porphyrinoids of broad structural variability. The wide range of coordination environments (type, number, charge, and architecture of the donor atoms) that the pyrrole-modified frameworks provide to the central metal ions, the frequent presence of donor atoms at their periphery, and their often observed nonplanarity or conformational flexibility distinguish the complexes of the PMPs clearly from those of the traditional square-planar, dianionic, N4-coordinating (hydro)porphyrins. Their different coordination properties suggest their utilization in areas beyond which regular metalloporphyrins are suitable. Following a general introduction to the synthetic methodologies available to generate pyrrole-modified porphyrins, their general structure, history, coordination chemistry, and optical properties, this Review highlights the chemical, electronic (optical), and structural differences of specific classes of metalloporphyrinoids containing nonpyrrolic heterocycles. The focus is on macrocycles with similar "tetrapyrrolic" architectures as porphyrins, thusly excluding the majority of expanded porphyrins. We highlight the relevance and application of these metal complexes in biological and technical fields as chemosensors, catalysts, photochemotherapeutics, or imaging agents. This Review provides an introduction to the field of metallo-PMPs as well as a comprehensive snapshot of the current state of the art of their synthesis, structures, and properties. It also aims to provide encouragement for the further study of these intriguing and structurally versatile metalloporphyrinoids.

Abstract
Two closely related electrosynthetic approaches are applied for the preparation of novel π-extended tetraphenylporphyrins from malononitrile-appended meso-β di-fused porphyrins, represented as MTPP(MN)2, where TPP = the dianion of tetraphenylporphyrin and MN = malononitrile. The first method involves application of a controlled reducing potential at a platinum electrode in CH2Cl2, while the second proceeds via cyanide anion induced electron transfer. Both methods produced the same decyanated, π-extended di-fused porphyrins represented as MTPP(VCN)2 where VCN = vinyl cyanide and M = H2, NiII, CuII, or ZnII in almost quantitative yields. The final isolated and purified porphyrin products are characterized by a split Soret band ranging from 411-497 nm and two broad intense Q bands. The new π-extended porphyrins are easier to reduce than the parent MTPP or MTPP(MN)2 compounds by 760-800 mV and 180-190 mV, respectively, and possess an electrochemical HOMO-LUMO gap ranging from 1.48 to 1.66 V. They are also characterized by two reversible one-electron ring-centered reductions in CH2Cl2 and three reversible one-electron ring-centered reductions in THF. A fourth irreversible reduction is seen in THF at more negative potentials and is assigned to one or two of the fused cyanobenzene rings of the macrocycle.

Abstract
Quinoline-based scaffolds have been the mainstay of antimalarial drugs, including many artemisinin combination therapies (ACTs), over the history of modern drug development. Although much progress has been made in the search for novel antimalarial scaffolds, it may be that quinolines will remain useful, especially if very potent compounds from this class are discovered. We report here the results of a structure-activity relationship (SAR) study assessing potential unsymmetrical bisquinoline antiplasmodial drug candidates using in vitro activity against intact parasites in cell culture. Many unsymmetrical bisquinolines were found to be highly potent against both chloroquine-sensitive and chloroquine-resistant Plasmodium falciparum parasites. Further work to develop such compounds could focus on minimizing toxicities in order to find suitable candidates for clinical evaluation.

Abstract
The platinum(II) complexes of known quinoline-annulated porphyrins were prepared and spectroscopically characterized. Their optical properties (UV-vis absorption and phosphorescence spectra and phosphorescence lifetimes) were recorded and contrasted against their 2,3-dioxoporphyrin precursor platinum(II) complex. The absorbance and emission spectra (in EtOH glass at 77 K) of the quinoline-annulated porphyrins fall within the NIR optical window of tissue, ranging, depending on the derivative, between [Formula: see text]950 and 1200 nm. The much red-shifted optical spectra, when compared to their non-quinoline-annulated precursors, are attributed to the [Formula: see text]-extension and conformational non-planarity that the annulation causes. The emission yields of the mono-quinoline-annulated derivatives are too low and their lifetimes too short to be practical emitters, but the bis-annulated derivative possesses a practical lifetime and emission yield, suggesting its further exploration, particularly since the methodology toward the solubilization of the quinoline-annulated porphyrins in biological media through derivatization is known.

Abstract
Optical data (UV-vis absorption and fluorescence emission spectra, including fluorescence yields and lifetimes) and electrochemical measurements are used to quantify the modulation of the electronic properties of meso-tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)-chlorin diol and -bacteriochlorin tetraols upon intramolecular chromene-annulation, including the investigation of regio- and stereoisomers. The small modulations of the frontier orbitals of the porphyrinoids are rationalized using DFT computations and can be traced to small electronic effects due to the co-planarized meso-aryl groups in combination with conformational effects.

Abstract
In this work we propose a completely new approach for the synthesis of spirochlorin derivatives based on the use of an imino-keto intermediate formed in situ from 2-amino-5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrins and inverse electron demand Diels-Alder (iEDDA) cycloaddition with 3,6-di-2-pyridyl-1,2,4,5-tetrazine. The mechanism of reaction was analyzed employing theoretical methods by comparing the difference in energy of Frontier Molecular Orbitals (FMO) for appropriate reagents. Ground-state molecular electrostatic (ESP) potential maps were employed as additional tools allowing explanation of the reactivity of substrates. The new class of spirochlorin compounds was fully characterized by means of mass spectrometry, IR, liquid and solid state NMR and X-ray crystallography. Correlation between molecular structure and optical properties for the obtained title compounds is discussed.

Abstract
Incorporation of planarized heteroatom(s) onto the porphyrin periphery is an effective approach to create porphyrin-based functional materials. In the last three decades, such an "embedding heteroatom" strategy has been actively explored in order to realize attractive electronic, optical, and electrochemical properties. This review aims to cover a variety of synthetic methodologies that have been developed for the construction of heteroatom-embedded porphyrins. Moreover, we also summarize their structure-property relationships as well as possible applications in various research fields including artificial photosynthesis, molecular engineering, organic electronics, and bioimaging.

Abstract
The synthesis and photophysical properties of a tetra-PEG-modified and freely water-soluble quinoline-annulated porphyrin are described. We previously demonstrated the ability of quinoline-annulated porphyrins to act as an in vitro NIR photoacoustic imaging (PAI) contrast agent. The solubility of the quinoline-annulated porphyrin derivative in serum now allowed the assessment of the efficacy of the PEGylated derivative as an in vivo NIR contrast agent for the PAI of an implanted tumor in a mouse model. A multi-fold contrast enhancement when compared to the benchmark dye ICG could be shown, a finding that could be traced to its photophysical properties (short triplet lifetimes, low fluorescence and singlet oxygen sensitization quantum yields). A NIR excitation wavelength of 790 nm could be used, fully taking advantage of the optical window of tissue. Rapid renal clearance of the dye was observed. Its straight-forward synthesis, optical properties with the possibility for further optical fine-tuning, nontoxicity, favorable elimination rates, and contrast enhancement make this a promising PAI contrast agent. The ability to conjugate the PAI chromophore with a fluorescent tag using a facile and general conjugation strategy was also demonstrated.

Abstract
The OsO4-mediated dihydroxylation of quinoline-annulated porphyrin generates a quinoline-annulated dihydroxychlorin in a regioselective fashion. Its dihydroxypyrroline moiety, located at the opposite of the annulated pyrrole, is susceptible to the same functional group interconversions we previously demonstrated for non-annulated dihydroxychlorins: oxidations to the corresponding dione, lactone, and dialkoxymorpholine derivatives. The quinoline-annulated chlorin and derivatives are all characterized by absorption spectra that are much broadened and between 130 and 220 nm red-shifted compared to their non-annulated analogs. Absorbance maxima in the NIR up to well above 800 nm were recorded. We attribute the bathochromic shift to their extended [Formula: see text]-systems and inferred non-planarity, highlighting that quinoline-annulation is a particularly effective and simple strategy to red-shift the absorption spectra of chlorins and chlorin analogs.

Abstract
In recent years, several synthetic strategies aiming at the peripheral functionalization of porphyrins were developed. Particularly interesting are those involving the modification of β-pyrrolic positions leading to pyrrole-modified porphyrins containing four-, five-, six- or seven-membered heterocycles. Azeteoporphyrins, porpholactones and morpholinoporphyrins are representative examples of such porphyrinoids. These porphyrin derivatives have recently gained an increasing interest due to their potential application in PDT, as multimodal imaging contrast agents, NIR-absorbing dyes, optical sensors for oxygen, cyanide, hypochlorite and pH, and in catalysis.
