Abstract
Cyclooctene endoperoxide was used as the key compound for the synthesis of aziridinecyclooctanediol and 3-aminocyclooctanetriol. Reduction of the cyclooctene endoperoxide, prepared by photooxygenation of cis,cis-1,3-cyclooctadiene, with zinc gave a cyclooctenediol and then benzylation of the hydroxy group yielded dibenzylated cyclooctene. Oxidation of the latter compound by OsO4/NMO followed by mesylation of the hydroxy group provided bis(benzyloxy)cyclooctane-1,2-diyl dimethanesulfonate. Reaction of the bis(benzyloxy)cyclooctane-1,2-diyl dimethanesulfonate with NaN3 gave 2-azido-3,8-bis(benzyloxy)cyclooctyl methanesulfonate. Reduction of the azide group and debenzylation to give an amine provided the new 3-aminocyclooctanetriol. Treatment of the 2-azido-3,8-bis(benzyloxy)cyclooctyl methanesulfonate with Zn/NH4Cl and debenzylation resulted in the target aziridinecyclooctanediol.

Abstract
The efficient synthesis of two new stereoisomeric 3-aminocyclooctanetriols and their new halocyclitol derivatives starting from cis,cis-1,3-cyclooctadiene are reported. Reduction of cyclooctene endoperoxide, obtained by photooxygenation of cis,cis-1,3-cyclooctadiene, with zinc yielded a cyclooctene diol followed by acetylation of the hydroxy group, which gave dioldiacetate by OsO4/NMO oxidation. The cyclooctane dioldiacetate prepared was converted to the corresponding cyclic sulfate via the formation of a cyclic sulfite in the presence of catalytic RuO4. The reaction of this cyclic sulfate with a nucleophilic azide followed by the reduction of the azide group provided the target, 3-aminocyclooctanetriol. The second key compound, bromotriol, was prepared by epoxidation of the cyclooctenediol with m-chloroperbenzoic acid followed by hydrolysis with HBr(g) in methanol. Treatment of bromotriol with NaN3 and the reduction of the azide group yielded the other desired 3-aminocyclooctanetriol. Hydrolysis of the epoxides with HCl(g) in methanol gave stereospecifically new chlorocyclooctanetriols.

Abstract
In this review we present relevant and recent applications of porphyrin derivatives as photocatalysts in organic synthesis, involving both single electron transfer (SET) and energy transfer (ET) mechanistic approaches. We demonstrate that these highly conjugated photosensitizers show increasing potential in photocatalysis since they combine both photo- and electrochemical properties which can substitute available metalloorganic photocatalysts. Batch and continuous-flow approaches are presented highlighting the relevance of enabling technologies for the renewal of porphyrin applications in photocatalysis. Finally, the reaction scale in which the methodologies were developed are highlighted since this is an important parameter in the authors' opinion.

Abstract
The cycloadditions of molecular dioxygen with neutral π-bond motifs rely heavily on singlet-state 1O2, whereas ground state 3O2 is chemically inactive. Here we report novel [3 + 2]-annulations among ground-state 3O2 (1 bar), allenes, and nitrosoarenes at low temperatures, efficiently yielding dioxygen-containing oxacycles. With less hindered 1-arylallene derivatives, these dioxygen species undergo skeletal rearrangement to 3-hydroxy-1-ketonyl-2-imine oxides. These cycloadditions represent valuable one-pot O,N,O-trifunctionalizations of allenes. Our EPR experiments confirm the presence of 1,4-diradical intermediates from an allene/nitrosoarene mixture, which manifest the hidden diradical properties of nitrosoarenes.

Abstract
To acquire iron essential for growth, the bacterium Shewanella putrefaciens produces the macrocyclic dihydroxamic acid putrebactin (pbH2; [M + H(+)](+), m/zcalc 373.2) as its native siderophore. The assembly of pbH2 requires endogenous 1,4-diaminobutane (DB), which is produced from the ornithine decarboxylase (ODC)-catalyzed decarboxylation of l-ornithine. In this work, levels of endogenous DB were attenuated in S. putrefaciens cultures by augmenting the medium with the ODC inhibitor 1,4-diamino-2-butanone (DBO). The presence in the medium of DBO together with alternative exogenous non-native diamine substrates, (15)N2-1,4-diaminobutane ((15)N2-DB) or 1,4-diamino-2(E)-butene (E-DBE), resulted in the respective biosynthesis of (15)N-labeled pbH2 ((15)N4-pbH2; [M + H(+)](+), m/zcalc 377.2, m/zobs 377.2) or the unsaturated pbH2 variant, named here: E,E-putrebactene (E,E-pbeH2; [M + H(+)](+), m/zcalc 369.2, m/zobs 369.2). In the latter system, remaining endogenous DB resulted in the parallel biosynthesis of the monounsaturated DB-E-DBE hybrid, E-putrebactene (E-pbxH2; [M + H(+)](+), m/zcalc 371.2, m/zobs 371.2). These are the first identified unsaturated macrocyclic dihydroxamic acid siderophores. LC-MS measurements showed 1:1 complexes formed between Fe(III) and pbH2 ([Fe(pb)](+); [M](+), m/zcalc 426.1, m/zobs 426.2), (15)N4-pbH2 ([Fe((15)N4-pb)](+); [M](+), m/zcalc 430.1, m/zobs 430.1), E,E-pbeH2 ([Fe(E,E-pbe)](+); [M](+), m/zcalc 422.1, m/zobs 422.0), or E-pbxH2 ([Fe(E-pbx)](+); [M](+), m/zcalc 424.1, m/zobs 424.2). The order of the gain in siderophore-mediated Fe(III) solubility, as defined by the difference in retention time between the free ligand and the Fe(III)-loaded complex, was pbH2 (ΔtR = 8.77 min) > E-pbxH2 (ΔtR = 6.95 min) > E,E-pbeH2 (ΔtR = 6.16 min), which suggests one possible reason why nature has selected for saturated rather than unsaturated siderophores as Fe(III) solubilization agents. The potential to conduct multiple types of ex situ chemical conversions across the double bond(s) of the unsaturated macrocycles provides a new route to increased molecular diversity in this class of siderophore.

Abstract
Aqueous infusions of the leaves of the shrub Albertisia delagoensis (Menispermaceae) are used in South Africa in traditional Zulu medicine to alleviate a variety of symptoms, including fever, and intestinal problems. We report the analysis of such an aqueous extract using the HPLC-NMR technique. A number of polar compounds were identified, including proto-quercitol, nicotinic acid, allantoic acid, 3,4-dihydroxy-benzoic acid, phthalic acid and the aporphine alkaloid derivative roemrefidine. Allantoic acid and roemrefidine have been fully characterised by (1)H- and (13)C-NMR and mass spectrometry. Earlier reports of antiplasmodial activity of roemrefidine and of A. delagoensis extracts are correlated with this study and with the antipyretic properties of neutral aqueous extracts.

Abstract
The syntheses of 12 stereochemically diverse polyhydroxyl aminocyclohexane ("aminocyclitols") derivatives are described. These short syntheses require 2-5 steps from N-(2,4-cyclohexadien-1-yl)phthalimide, which is prepared in two steps from tricarbonyl(cyclohexadienyl)iron(1+). The relative stereochemistries of the aminocyclitols were assigned by (1)H NMR spectroscopy as well as X-ray diffraction analysis.

Abstract
1,4-Disubstituted 2,3-dioxabicyclo[2.2.2]oct-5-enes were dihydroxylated with osmium tetroxide to yield diols anti to the peroxide linkage in a highly selective manner. Reduction of the peroxide bond furnished cyclohexane-1,2,3,4-tetraols with toxocarol relative stereochemistry in excellent yield. This new methodology was employed to synthesize the natural product (1S,2R,3S,4R,5R)-2-methyl-5-(propan-2-yl)cyclohexane-1,2,3,4-tetrol (1) in a short sequence from (R)-alpha-phellandrene. Moreover, during the study of the chemistry of 2,3-dioxabicyclo[2.2.2]octane-5,6-diols a hitherto unknown rearrangement was discovered which has wide applicability for the synthesis of 1,4-dicarbonyls, including optically enriched synthons. A broad range of mechanistic investigations applicable to this rearrangement are also reported.

Abstract
We report that endogenously synthesized (-)-proto-quercitol (1D-1,3,4/2,5-cyclohexanepentol) and glycine betaine were the principal compatible solutes of Schizochytrium sp. strain S8 (ATCC 20889) and three new osmotolerant isolates of thraustochytrids (strains T65, T66, and T67). The compatible solutes were identified and quantified by use of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and their identity was confirmed by mass spectroscopy and measurement of the specific optical rotation. The cellular content of compatible solutes increased with increasing NaCl concentration of a defined medium. (-)-proto-Quercitol was the dominating solute at all NaCl concentrations tested (0.25 to 1.0 M), e.g., cells of S8 and T66 stressed with 1.0 M NaCl accumulated about 500 micromol (-)-proto-quercitol and 100 micromol glycine betaine per g dry weight. To our knowledge, (-)-proto-quercitol has previously been found only in eucalyptus. The 18S rRNA gene sequences of the four (-)-proto-quercitol-producing strains showed 99% identity, and they displayed the same fatty acid profile. The only polyunsaturated fatty acids accumulated were docosahexaenoic acid (78%) and docosapentaenoic acid (22%). A less osmotolerant isolate (strain T29), which was closely phylogenetically related to Thraustochytrium aureum (ATCC 34304), did not contain (-)-proto-quercitol or glycine betaine. Thus, the level of osmotolerance and the osmolyte systems vary among thraustochytrids.

Abstract
Several new stereoisomers of 3,4,6-trihydroxyazepanes and 7-hydroxymethyl-3,4,5-trihydroxyazepanes as well as known 3,4,5-trihydroxyazepanes were synthesized as potent glycosidase inhibitors from D-(-)-quinic acid in an efficient manner. The key step employs dihydroxylation of protected chiral 1,4,5-cyclohex-2-enetriols under RuCl3/NaIO4/phosphate buffer (pH 7) condition, followed by reductive amino cyclization. We found the choice of an appropriate protecting group to C1-OH of chiral 1,4,5-cyclohex-2-enetriols would increase the yields of cyclization. The preliminary biological data indicate some of these azepanes possess potent inhibition against alpha-mannosidase and alpha-fucosidase.

Abstract
Bis-homoconduritol derivatives with conduritol-A, -D, and -F structures have been synthesized starting from cyclooctatetraene. The photooxygenation of trans-7,8-dibromo- and cis-7,8-dichlorobicyclo[4.2.0]octa-2,4-dienes afforded the bicyclic endoperoxides. Reduction of the endoperoxides with thiourea followed by acetylation gave the corresponding diacetates. The KMnO(4) oxidation and epoxidation of the diacetates followed by acetylation gave the tetraacetates. Removal of the halides either with zinc-dust or Na-anthracene followed by the ammonolysis of tetraacetates afforded the bis-homoconduritol derivatives in high yield.

Abstract
The effective formation of 1-azabicyclo[1.1.0]butane (2) by treatment of 2,3-dibromopropylamine hydrobromide (1) with n-BuLi could be understood considering a rational reaction pathway via both transition states 10 and 19 based on the intramolecular Br...Li(+) coordination. A similar cyclization pathway starting from N-benzyl-3-bromopropylamine hydrochloride (17) to afford N-benzylazetidine (18) could also be postulated on the basis of a transition state 20 involving the intramolecular Br...Li(+) coordination.

Abstract
(1,4/2)-cyclohex-5-ene-triol was synthesized starting from cyclohexa-1,4-diene with two different approaches. Photooxygenation of cyclohexa-1,4-diene and epoxy-cyclohexene afforded anti-2,3-dioxabicyclo[2.2.2]oct-7-en-5-yl hydroperoxide and anti-7-oxabicyclo[4.1.0]hept-4-en-3-yl hydroperoxide, respectively. Hydroperoxy endoperoxide was reduced with aqueous sodium bisulfite; hydroperoxy-epoxide with dimethylsulfide-titanium tetraisopropoxide to give 7-oxabicyclo[4.1.0]hept-4-en-3-ol. Acidic hydrolysis of the epoxy-alcohol gave the (1,4/2)-cyclohex-3-ene-triol. Oxidation of the double bond with KMnO4 resulted in the formation of (+/-)-proto-quercitol.

Abstract
A careful study of the linoleic acid hydroperoxide (LOOH) profile obtained upon peroxidation of linoleic acid (LA) photosensitized by tiaprofenic acid (TPA) and analogous ketones has been undertaken to distinguish between type-I and type-II photoperoxidation mechanisms. 1,4-Cyclohexadiene and 1,2-dimethylcyclohexa-2,5-dienecarboxylic acid (CHDCA) have also been used as models for LA since they also have double allylic systems. Coirradiation of LA with TPA and decarboxytiaprofenic acid (DTPA) in acetonitrile and micellar media produced significant amounts of conjugated dienic LOOH. The cis, trans to trans, trans ratio depended on the irradiation time; thus, this parameter is an ambiguous tool for mechanistic assignment. An interesting finding was the decrease of the LOOH level after long irradiation times in mixtures photooxidized by DTPA, which is attributed to quenching of the DTPA triplet by the generated dienic LOOH. High-performance liquid chromatography analyses confirmed that the main pathway operating in photodynamic lipid peroxidation sensitized by (D)TPA is a type-I mechanism. However, product studies using CHDCA have clearly shown that a type-II mechanism is also operating and might contribute to the overall photooxidation process in a significant way.

Abstract
The photooxygenation of 1,4-cyclohexadiene (3) affords the diastereomeric hydroperoxy endoperoxides exo-4 and endo-4 and the diastereomeric hydroperoxides trans-5 and cis-5 in a ratio of 87:9:3. 5:0.5. Selective reduction of hydroperoxide group in the endoperoxides exo-4 and endo-4 in the presence of titanium tetraisopropoxide-diethyl sulfide gave the corresponding hydroxy endoperoxides exo-7 and endo-7, which on PCC oxidation leads to the phenol-derived keto endoperoxide 2. The triphenylphosphine deoxygenation of the keto endoperoxide 2 produces a 9:1 mixture of 1, 2- and 1,4-dihydroxybenzenes 10 and 11, while the CoTPP-catalyzed rearrangement affords the bisepoxide 12, malealdehyde (13), and beta-lactone 14. The mechanisms of these transformations are presented.
