Abstract
The methanolic extract of the flower of Bombax ceiba was found to show protective effects on cytotoxicity induced by benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) in HT1080 cells. We therefore tried to examine and estimate the active constituents. We isolated 16 compounds from the extract, including four butyrolactones and two ascorbic acid derivatives, as well as mangiferin. Among the isolated compounds, a butyrolactone derivative, (-)-loliolide, and two flavonoids, kaempferol 3- O-β-D-glucopyranoside and quercetin 3- O-β-D-glucopyranoside, protected the cells against the BaP-induced cytotoxicity. Quercetin, the aglycone of one of the active constituents, showed a weaker effect than its glycoside. This is the first report of the protective effects of the methanolic extract of B. ceiba and its constituents on BaP-induced cytotoxicity.

Abstract
A single-step synthesis of 3-O-ethyl-l-ascorbic acid was performed without the induction of protecting groups. Sodium l-ascorbate reacted with ethyl bromide in DMSO to give 3-O-ethylascorbic acid in a yield of 51.0%. 3-O-Ethylascorbic acid enhanced dibutyryl cyclic AMP-induced neurite outgrowth in PC12 cells.

Abstract
As part of our program to develop potential imaging agents for ascorbate bioactivity in the brain, 5-O-(4'-iodobenzyl)-L-ascorbic acid was prepared through a seven-step sequence which involved C5-O-alkylation with p-iodobenzyl bromide in the presence of Ag2O and CaSO4 as the key step, starting from L-ascorbic acid. The scavenging activity of the p-iodobenzylated analog against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhyrazyl (DPPH) radical was almost the same as that of L-ascorbic acid itself.

Abstract
Configurational assignment and conformational analysis of a series of iminodihydrofurans obtained from cyanoacetylenic alcohols were performed on the basis of experimental measurements and high-level ab initio calculations of their (13)C-(13)C spin-spin coupling constants. The title compounds were shown to form and exist in solution as the individual Z isomers, adopting the orthogonal orientation of the amino, alkylamino and dialkylamino groups and the s-trans orientation of the CONH(2) group at the C(4) position of the 2,5-dihydro-2-iminofuran moiety.

Abstract
The syntheses of the novel C-5 substituted pyrimidine derivatives of l-ascorbic acid containing free hydroxy groups at C-2' (6-10) or C-2' and C-3' (11-15) positions of the lactone ring are described. Debenzylation of the 6-chloro- and 6-(N-pyrrolyl)purine derivatives of 2,3-O,O-dibenzyl-l-ascorbic acid (16 and 17) gave the new compounds containing hydroxy groups at C-2' (18) and C-2' and C-3' (19 and 20). Z- and E-configuration of the C4'C5' double bond and position of the lactone ring of the compounds 6-9 were deduced from their one- and two-dimensional (1)H and (13)C NMR spectra and connectivities in NOESY and HMBC spectra. Compounds 15 and 18 showed the best inhibitory activities of all evaluated compounds in the series. The compound 15 containing 5-(trifluoromethyl)uracil showed marked inhibitory activity against all human malignant cell lines (IC(50): 5.6-12.8 microM) except on human T-lymphocytes. Besides, this compound influenced the cell cycle by increasing the cell population in G2/M phase and induced apoptosis in SW 620 and MiaPaCa-2 cells. The compound 18 containing 6-chloropurine ring expressed the most pronounced inhibitory activities against HeLa (IC(50): 6.8 microM) and MiaPaCa-2 cells (IC(50): 6.5 microM). The compound 20 with 6-(N-pyrrolyl)purine moiety showed the best differential inhibitory effect against MCF-7 cells (IC(50): 35.9 microM).

Abstract
l-Ascorbic acid is a versatile radical scavenger widely distributed in aerobic organisms that plays a central role in the protection of cellular components against oxidative damage by free radicals and oxidants. It also functions as a physiological reductant for key enzymatic transformations in catecholamine neurotransmitters, amidated peptide hormones, and collagen biosynthetic pathways. Simple derivatives of l-ascorbic acid have been shown to possess antioxidant, antitumor, and immunostimulant activities. The antioxidant and redox properties of l-ascorbic acid are closely associated with the electron-rich 2,3-enediol moiety of the molecule, and therefore, selective functionalization of the 2- and 3-OH groups is essential for the detailed structure-activity studies. Reactions of 5- and 6-OH-protected ascorbic acid with electrophilic reagents exclusively produce the corresponding 3-O-alkylated products under mild basic conditions due to the high nucleophilicity of the C-3-OH. Based on the density functional theory (B3LYP) electron density calculations, we have devised a novel and general method for the direct alkylation of the 2-OH group of ascorbic acid with complete regio- and chemoselectivity. We have also carried out a complete spectroscopic analysis of two complementary series of 2-O-acetyl-3-O-alkyl- and 2-O-alkyl-3-O-acetylascorbic acid derivatives to define their spectroscopic characteristics and to resolve common inconsistencies in the literature.
