Abstract
The generation of radical intermediates via SET-mediated deoxygenation of activated alcohol derivatives is desirable, as alcohols can be utilized in various radical-mediated reactions. Herein, we introduce α-N-phthalimido-oxy isobutyrate (NPIB) as a novel activating group for alcohols. Essentially, it is a more chemically robust alternative to Overman's N-phthalimidoyl oxalate group. The utility of the NPIB group is showcased in the conversion of tertiary alcohols to nitriles under Ir/Cu dual catalysts and in the presence of TMSCN upon blue LED irradiation. With our newly developed NPIB handle, the reactivities of N-hydroxyphthalimide esters derived from carboxylic acids would be achievable with naturally and commercially more abundant alcohol substrates.

Abstract
Efficient C-C bond cleavage is recognized as a persistent challenge in the field of synthetic methodology. In this study, we found that tertiary alkyl radicals are smoothly formed from tertiary alkylated dienones (BHT adducts) via SET, using PDI as a photocatalyst. Resulting tert-alkyl radicals could be applied to the tert-alkylation of enamides. The driving force of this C-C bond cleavage reaction is the mesolytic cleavage of the BHT adducts. The mechanistic study revealed that PDI anion radical is the key active species during the catalytic cycle.

Abstract
The density functional theory (DFT) was employed to theoretically investigate the reaction mechanism of alcohol deoxygenation/trifluoromethylation. The substrate alcohol (R1) forms a complex (INT3) by binding with benzoxazole salts (NHCs). Under the influence of the photocatalyst ([IrIII]*) and quinuclidine, the C-H bond in INT3 is activated through either electron transfer-proton transfer (ETPT) or hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) mechanisms, resulting in the cleavage of C-O bonds and generation of deoxyalkyl radicals. The distribution of high-valent and low-valent states in the catalytic cycle of [Ir]-complexes is governed by the redox potential mechanism. Investigation was conducted on the source of hydrogen atom transfer reagents in the HAT reaction process under both optimal and nonoptimal conditions. The results demonstrate distinct reactivity among various radicals involved in the Cu-mediated radical capture process. Further investigations into INT3 activation modes, cycling facilitated by [Ir]-complexes, and understanding the role played by [Cu]-complexes in this reaction system provide a valuable theoretical foundation for comprehending and enhancing Ir/Cu bimetallic cooperative catalysis in alcohol deoxygenation/trifluoromethylation reactions. This provides anticipated theoretical support for future designs of more efficient and rational alcohol deoxygenation reactions.

Abstract
The rapid exploration of sp3 -enriched chemical space is facilitated by fragment-coupling technologies that utilize simple and abundant alkyl precursors, among which alcohols are a highly desirable, commercially accessible, and synthetically versatile class of substrate. Herein, we describe an operationally convenient, N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-mediated deoxygenative Giese-type addition of alcohol-derived alkyl radicals to electron-deficient alkenes under mild photocatalytic conditions. The fragment coupling accommodates a broad range of primary, secondary, and tertiary alcohol partners, as well as structurally varied Michael acceptors containing traditionally reactive sites, such as electrophilic or oxidizable moieties. We demonstrate the late-stage diversification of densely functionalized molecular architectures, including drugs and biomolecules, and we further telescope our protocol with metallaphotoredox cross-coupling for step-economic access to sp3 -rich complexity.

Abstract
Alcohols are among the most widely occurring functional groups found in naturally abundant, biologically relevant organic compounds, which in many cases are considered feedstock chemicals. Herein, we report a metal-free method for the deoxygenative coupling of alcohol-derived benzoates and pyridines promoted by visible light. Given the practical, mild and water-compatible conditions, small molecules and DNA headpieces can be successfully functionalized with a range of primary, secondary and tertiary alcohols. This protocol is distinguished by its wide substrate scope and broad applicability, even in the context of late-stage functionalization and DNA-drug coupling reactions.

Abstract
Alcohols and carboxylic acids are among the most commercially abundant, synthetically versatile, and operationally convenient functional groups in organic chemistry. Under visible light photoredox catalysis, these native synthetic handles readily undergo radical activation, and the resulting open-shell intermediates can subsequently participate in transition metal catalysis. In this report, we describe the C(sp3)-C(sp3) cross-coupling of alcohols and carboxylic acids through the dual combination of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-mediated deoxygenation and hypervalent iodine-mediated decarboxylation. This mild and practical Ni-catalyzed radical-coupling protocol was employed to prepare a wide array of alkyl-alkyl cross-coupled products, including highly congested quaternary carbon centers from the corresponding tertiary alcohols or tertiary carboxylic acids. We demonstrate the synthetic applications of this methodology to alcohol C1-alkylation and formal homologation, as well as to the late-stage functionalization of drugs, natural products, and biomolecules.

Abstract
The homolytic cleavage of C-O bonds to afford alkyl radicals is an attractive yet challenging transformation in organic synthesis. Herein we describe a photocatalyzed deoxygenative C-C coupling reaction of xanthate salts, which can be easily prepared from the corresponding alcohols. The key to the success of this strategy is the low oxidation potential of the xanthate salt and the use of an appropriate phosphine to accelerate the desulfurative release of carbonyl sulfide.

Abstract
Three-dimensional cage-like natural products represent astounding and long-term challenges in the research endeavors of total synthesis. A central issue that synthetic chemists need to address lies in how to efficiently construct the polycyclic frameworks as well as to install the requisite substituent groups. The diterpenoid alkaloids that biogenetically originate from amination of diterpenes and diversify through late-stage skeletal reorganization belong to such a natural product category. As the characteristic components of the Aconitum and Delphinium species, these molecules display a rich array of biological activities, some of which are used as clinical drugs. More strikingly, their intricate and beautiful architectures have rendered the diterpenoid alkaloids elusive targets in the synthetic community. The successful preparation of these intriguing compounds relies on the development of innovative synthetic strategies. Our laboratory has explored the total synthesis of a variety of diterpenoid alkaloids and their biogenetically related diterpenes over the past decade. In doing so, we have accessed 6 different types of skeletons (atisine-, denudatine-, arcutane-, arcutine-, napelline-, and hetidine-type) and achieved the total synthesis of 6 natural products (isoazitine, dihydroajaconine, gymnandine, atropurpuran, arcutinine, and liangshanone). Strategically, an oxidative dearomatization/Diels-Alder (OD/DA) cycloaddition sequence was widely employed in our synthesis to form the ubiquitous [2.2.2]-bicyclic ring unit and its related ring-distorted derivatives in these complex target molecules. This protocol, in combination with additional bond-forming key steps, allowed us to prepare the corresponding polycyclic alkaloids and a biogenetically associated diterpene. For example, bioinspired C-H activation, aza-pinacol, and aza-Prins cyclizations were used toward a unified approach to the atisine-, denudatine-, and hetidine-type alkaloids via ajaconine intermediates in our first work. To pursue the synthesis of atropurpuran and related arcutine alkaloids, we harnessed a ketyl-olefin radical cyclization to assemble the carbocycle and an aza-Wacker cyclization to construct the unusual pyrrolidine ring. Furthermore, a one-pot alkene cleavage/Mannich cyclization tactic, sequential Robinson annulation, and intramolecular aldol addition were developed, which facilitated the formation of the napelline alkaloid scaffold and the first total synthesis of liangshanone. Finally, the utility of the Mannich cyclization and enyne cycloisomerization reactions allowed for access to the highly functionalized A/E and C/D ring fragments of aconitine (regarded as the "Holy Grail" of diterpenoid alkaloids). This Account provides insight into our synthetic designs and approaches used toward the synthesis of diterpenoid alkaloids and relevant diterpenes. These endeavors lay a foundation for uncovering the biological profiles of associated molecules and also serve as a reference for preparing other three-dimensionally fascinating natural products.

Abstract
The xanthate-mediated addition of tertiary alkyl radicals to heteroarenes enabled the easy functionalization of heteroaromatic rings as well as more decorated structures, such as marketed drugs or agrochemicals. This work provides a synthetic tool for efficiently exploring the chemical space by allowing late-stage diversification with a high tolerance toward functional groups.

Abstract
A new method for the reduction of iodosteroids to deoxysteroids has been developed using Zn, HCOOH and a catalytic amount of Aliquat 336 in water. In total, 13 iodosteroids were reduced in good to excellent yields. The higher solubilities of the substrates lead to the faster reactions, and the aqueous reaction was efficiently accelerated by granular polytetrafluoroethylene. The advantage of the aqueous system over eight organic solvents has also been demonstrated.

Abstract
The first systematic investigation of unactivated aliphatic sulfur compounds as electrophiles in transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling are described. Initial studies focused on discerning the structural and electronic features of the organosulfur substrate that enable the challenging oxidative addition to the C(sp(3))-S bond. Through extensive optimization efforts, an Fe(acac)3-catalyzed cross-coupling of unactivated alkyl aryl thio ethers with aryl Grignard reagents was realized in which a nitrogen "directing group" on the S-aryl moiety of the thio ether served a critical role in facilitating the oxidative addition step. In addition, alkyl phenyl sulfones were found to be effective electrophiles in the Fe(acac)3-catalyzed cross-coupling with aryl Grignard reagents. For the latter class of electrophile, a thorough assessment of the various reaction parameters revealed a dramatic enhancement in reaction efficiency with an excess of TMEDA (8.0 equiv). The optimized reaction protocol was used to evaluate the scope of the method with respect to both the organomagnesium nucleophile and sulfone electrophile.

Abstract
[reaction: see text]. A new method for efficient radical deoxygenation of alcohols is described for preparing bulk chemicals avoiding scale-up problems. Treatment of various thiocarbonyl derivatives with (Bu(4)N)(2)S(2)O(8) and HCO(2)Na in DMF afforded the corresponding deoxygenated products in excellent yields. The deoxygenation appears to be initiated by the transfer of a single electron to thiocarbonyl derivatives from CO(2)(*)(-) rather than from SO4(*)(-).

Abstract
Radical ring-expansion reaction of various alpha-halomethyl cyclic beta-keto esters and alpha-halomethyl benzocyclic beta-keto esters and chain-extension reaction of alpha-halomethyl beta-keto esters with zinc powder and indium powder in refluxing aqueous alcohol were carried out to generate the corresponding ring-expansion and chain-extension products. As the results indicate, it was found zinc powder was more effective than indium powder to give the corresponding ring-expanded products in quite good yields. Moreover, the addition of zinc bromide as Lewis acid showed an increase of the yields, depending on the substrates. The present reaction conditions are highly effective, simple, and environmentally friendly.
