Optimization of High-Yield Biological Synthesis of Single-Crystalline Gold Nanoplates

Diversity of fungus-mediated synthesis of gold nanoparticles: properties, mechanisms, challenges, and solving methods

Fungi-mediated synthesis of Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) has advantages in: high efficiency, low energy consumption, no need for extra capping and stabilizing agents, simple operation, and easy isolation and purification. Many fungi have been found to synthesize AuNPs inside cells or outside cells, providing different composition and properties of particles when different fungi species or reaction conditions are used. This is good to produce AuNPs with different properties, but may cause challenges to precisely control the particle shape, size, and activities. Besides, low concentrations of substrate and fungal biomass are needed to synthesize small-size particles, limiting the yield of AuNPs in a large scale. To find clues for the development methods to solve these challenges, the reported mechanisms of the fungi-mediated synthesis of AuNPs were summarized. The mechanisms of intracellular AuNPs synthesis are dependent on gold ions absorption by the fungal cell wall via proteins, polysaccharides, or electric absorption, and the reduction of gold ions via enzymes, proteins, and other cytoplasmic redox mediators in the cytoplasm or cell wall. The extracellular synthesis of AuNPs is mainly due to the metabolites outside fungal cells, including proteins, peptides, enzymes, and phenolic metabolites. These mechanisms cause the great diversity of the produced AuNPs in functional groups, element composition, shapes, sizes, and properties. Many methods have been developed to improve the synthesis efficiency by changing: chloroauric acid concentrations, reaction temperature, pH, fungal mass, and reaction time. However, future studies are still required to precisely control the: shape, size, composition, and properties of fungal AuNPs.

How Synthesis of Algal Nanoparticles Affects Cancer Therapy? - A Complete Review of the Literature

The necessity to engineer sustainable nanomaterials for the environment and human health has recently increased. Due to their abundance, fast growth, easy cultivation, biocompatibility and richness of secondary metabolites, algae are valuable biological source for the green synthesis of nanoparticles (NPs). The aim of this review is to demonstrate the feasibility of using algal-based NPs for cancer treatment. Blue-green, brown, red and green micro- and macro-algae are the most commonly participating algae in the green synthesis of NPs. In this process, many algal bioactive compounds, such as proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, alkaloids, flavonoids and phenols, can catalyze the reduction of metal ions to NPs. In addition, many driving factors, including pH, temperature, duration, static conditions and substrate concentration, are involved to facilitate the green synthesis of algal-based NPs. Here, the biosynthesis, mechanisms and applications of algal-synthesized NPs in cancer therapy have been critically discussed. We also reviewed the effective role of algal synthesized NPs as anticancer treatment against human breast, colon and lung cancers and carcinoma.

Hot-Electron Dynamics Mediated Medical Diagnosis and Therapy

Surface plasmon resonance excitation significantly enhances the absorption of light and increases the generation of "hot" electrons, i.e., conducting electrons that are raised from their steady states to excited states. These excited electrons rapidly decay and equilibrate via radiative and nonradiative damping over several hundred femtoseconds. During the hot-electron dynamics, from their generation to the ultimate nonradiative decay, the electromagnetic field enhancement, hot electron density increase, and local heating effect are sequentially induced. Over the past decade, these physical phenomena have attracted considerable attention in the biomedical field, e.g., the rapid and accurate identification of biomolecules, precise synthesis and release of drugs, and elimination of tumors. This review highlights the recent developments in the application of hot-electron dynamics in medical diagnosis and therapy, particularly fully integrated device techniques with good application prospects. In addition, we discuss the latest experimental and theoretical studies of underlying mechanisms. From a practical standpoint, the pioneering modeling analyses and quantitative measurements in the extreme near field are summarized to illustrate the quantification of hot-electron dynamics. Finally, the prospects and remaining challenges associated with biomedical engineering based on hot-electron dynamics are presented.

Cytotoxic and Genotoxic Evaluation of Biosynthesized Silver Nanoparticles Using Moringa oleifera on MCF-7 and HUVEC Cell Lines

Nowadays, green synthesized nanoparticles (NPs) are extensively investigated to explore their biological potential. They are being explored to treat different infectious and cancerous diseases. Therefore, the current study was designed to evaluate the cytotoxic and genotoxic effects of biosynthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) from the medicinal plant Moringa oleifera on breast cancer (MCF-7) and HUVEC (human umbilical vein endothelial cells) cell lines. M. oleifera-mediated AgNPs were synthesized from the M. oleifera extract (MOE) and then characterized through the use of a scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and UV–vis spectrophotometer. Biosynthesized AgNPs and MOE were employed on MCF-7 and HUVEC cell lines to evaluate their cytotoxic and genotoxic effects. More cytotoxic effects were observed by AgNPs and MOE on MCF-7 cell lines. The IC₅₀ for biosynthesized AgNPs was found to be 5 μg/mL. DNA damage was also observed by the MOE and AgNPs on MCF-7 cell lines. However, non-significant DNA damage was observed by MOE and AgNPs on HUVEC cell lines. The findings of the current study revealed the cytotoxic and genotoxic effects of biosynthesized AgNPs on MCF-7 cell lines. However, these AgNPs were considered safe for normal HUVEC cell lines.

Nanogold-based materials in medicine: from their origins to their future

The properties of gold-based materials have been explored for centuries in several research fields, including medicine. Multiple published production methods for gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have shown that the physicochemical and optical properties of AuNPs depend on the production method used. These different AuNP properties have allowed exploration of their usefulness in countless distinct biomedical applications over the last few years. Here we present an extensive overview of the most commonly used AuNP production methods, the resulting distinct properties of the AuNPs and the potential application of these AuNPs in diagnostic and therapeutic approaches in biomedicine.

Biological Synthesis of Nanocatalysts and Their Applications

Over the past few decades, the synthesis and potential applications of nanocatalysts have received great attention from the scientific community. Many well-established methods are extensively utilized for the synthesis of nanocatalysts. However, most conventional physical and chemical methods have some drawbacks, such as the toxicity of precursor materials, the requirement of high-temperature environments, and the high cost of synthesis, which ultimately hinder their fruitful applications in various fields. Bioinspired synthesis is eco-friendly, cost-effective, and requires a low energy/temperature ambient. Various microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, and algae are used as nano-factories and can provide a novel method for the synthesis of different types of nanocatalysts. The synthesized nanocatalysts can be further utilized in various applications such as the removal of heavy metals, treatment of industrial effluents, fabrication of materials with unique properties, biomedical, and biosensors. This review focuses on the biogenic synthesis of nanocatalysts from various green sources that have been adopted in the past two decades, and their potential applications in different areas. This review is expected to provide a valuable guideline for the biogenic synthesis of nanocatalysts and their concomitant applications in various fields.

Microbial biomanufacture of metal/metallic nanomaterials and metabolic engineering: design strategies, fundamental mechanisms, and future opportunities

Biomanufacturing metal/metallic nanomaterials with ordered micro/nanostructures and controllable functions is of great importance in both fundamental studies and practical applications due to their low toxicity, lower pollution production, and energy conservation. Microorganisms, as efficient biofactories, have a significant ability to biomineralize and bioreduce metal ions that can be obtained as nanocrystals of varying morphologies and sizes. The development of nanoparticle biosynthesis maximizes the safety and sustainability of the nanoparticle preparation. Significant efforts and progress have been made to develop new green and environmentally friendly methods for biocompatible metal/metallic nanomaterials. In this review, we mainly focus on the microbial biomanufacture of different metal/metallic nanomaterials due to their unique advantages of wide availability, environmental acceptability, low cost, and circular sustainability. Specifically, we summarize recent and important advances in the synthesis strategies and mechanisms for different types of metal/metallic nanomaterials using different microorganisms. Finally, we highlight the current challenges and future research directions in this growing multidisciplinary field of biomaterials science, nanoscience, and nanobiotechnology.

Gold-Carbon Nanocomposites for Environmental Contaminant Sensing

The environmental crisis, due to the rapid growth of the world population and globalisation, is a serious concern of this century. Nanoscience and nanotechnology play an important role in addressing a wide range of environmental issues with innovative and successful solutions. Identification and control of emerging chemical contaminants have received substantial interest in recent years. As a result, there is a need for reliable and rapid analytical tools capable of performing sample analysis with high sensitivity, broad selectivity, desired stability, and minimal sample handling for the detection, degradation, and removal of hazardous contaminants. In this review, various gold–carbon nanocomposites-based sensors/biosensors that have been developed thus far are explored. The electrochemical platforms, synthesis, diverse applications, and effective monitoring of environmental pollutants are investigated comparatively.

Crumpled Versus Flat Gold Nanosheets: Temperature-Regulated Synthesis and Their Plasmonic and Catalytic Properties

We report a high-yield synthesis of gold (Au) nanosheets with tunable size and surface morphology in the aqueous phase. In particular, crumpled and flat Au nanosheets with a thickness of ∼10 nm could be selectively produced in high purity when the reaction was conducted at room temperature and in an ice-water bath, respectively. Unlike Au nanoplates/nanoprisms in the form of well-defined triangles or hexagons documented in previous studies, the current products exhibit random in-plane branches or holes, together with wavy edges. Strong absorbance in the NIR region was observed for all the Au nanosheet products. When serving as electrocatalysts for the ethanol oxidation reaction, the current products exhibited an enhanced activity and operation stability, as compared to quasi-spherical counterparts.

Peptide Gelators to Template Inorganic Nanoparticle Formation

The use of peptides to template inorganic nanoparticle formation has attracted great interest as a green route to advance structures with innovative physicochemical properties for a variety of applications that range from biomedicine and sensing, to catalysis. In particular, short-peptide gelators offer the advantage of providing dynamic supramolecular environments for the templating effect on the formation of inorganic nanoparticles directly in the resulting gels, and ideally without using further reductants or chemical reagents. This mini-review describes the recent progress in the field to outline future research directions towards dynamic functional materials that exploit the synergy between supramolecular chemistry, nanoscience, and the interface between organic and inorganic components for advanced performance.

An Overview of the Algae-Mediated Biosynthesis of Nanoparticles and Their Biomedical Applications

Algae have long been exploited commercially and industrially as food, feed, additives, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and fertilizer, but now the trend is shifting towards the algae-mediated green synthesis of nanoparticles (NPs). This trend is increasing day by day, as algae are a rich source of secondary metabolites, easy to cultivate, have fast growth, and are scalable. In recent era, green synthesis of NPs has gained widespread attention as a safe, simple, sustainable, cost-effective, and eco-friendly protocol. The secondary metabolites from algae reduce, cap, and stabilize the metal precursors to form metal, metal oxide, or bimetallic NPs. The NPs synthesis could either be intracellular or extracellular depending on the location of NPs synthesis and reducing agents. Among the diverse range of algae, the most widely investigated algae for the biosynthesis of NPs documented are brown, red, blue-green, micro and macro green algae. Due to the biocompatibility, safety and unique physico-chemical properties of NPs, the algal biosynthesized NPs have also been studied for their biomedical applications, which include anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-cancerous, anti-fouling, bioremediation, and biosensing activities. In this review, the rationale behind the algal-mediated biosynthesis of metallic, metallic oxide, and bimetallic NPs from various algae have been reviewed. Furthermore, an insight into the mechanism of biosynthesis of NPs from algae and their biomedical applications has been reviewed critically.

DNA-Guided Room-Temperature Synthesis of Single-Crystalline Gold Nanostructures on Graphdiyne Substrates

Nobel metal nanoparticles with tunable morphologies are highly desirable due to their unique electronic, magnetic, optical, and/or catalytic features. Here we report the use of multilayered graphdyine (GD) as a substrate for the reductant-free, room-temperature synthesis of single-crystal Au nanostructures with tunable morphology. We find that the GD template rich in sp-carbon atoms possesses high affinity with Au atoms on the {111} facets, and that the intrinsic reductivity of GD facilitates the rapid growth of Au nanoplates. The introduction of single-stranded DNA strands further results in the synthesis of Au nanostructures with decreased anisotropy, i.e., polygons and flower-like nanoparticles. The DNA-guided tunable Au growth arises from the strong adsorption of DNA on the GD template that alters the uniformity of the interface, which provides a direct route to synthesize Au nanostructures with tailorable morphology and photonic properties.

Directed evolution of artificial repeat proteins as habit modifiers for the morphosynthesis of (111)-terminated gold nanocrystals

Natural biocomposites are shaped by proteins that have evolved to interact with inorganic materials. Protein directed evolution methods which mimic Darwinian evolution have proven highly successful to generate improved enzymes or therapeutic antibodies but have rarely been used to evolve protein-material interactions. Indeed, most reported studies have focused on short peptides and a wide range of oligopeptides with chemical binding affinity for inorganic materials have been uncovered by phage display methods. However, their small size and flexible unfolded structure prevent them from dictating the shape and crystallinity of the growing material. In the present work, a specific set of artificial repeat proteins (αRep), which exhibit highly stable 3D folding with a well-defined hypervariable interacting surface, is selected by directed evolution of a very efficient home-built protein library for their high and selective affinity for the Au(111) surface. The proteins are built from the extendable concatenation of self-compatible repeated motifs idealized from natural HEAT proteins. The high-yield synthesis of Au(111)-faceted nanostructures mediated by these αRep proteins demonstrates their chemical affinity and structural selectivity that endow them with high crystal habit modification performances. Importantly, we further exploit the protein shell spontaneously assembled on the nanocrystal facets to drive protein-mediated colloidal self-assembly and on-surface enzymatic catalysis. Our method constitutes a generic tool for producing nanocrystals with determined faceting, superior biocompatibility and versatile bio-functionalization towards plasmon-based devices and (bio)molecular sensors.

Algae-based metallic nanoparticles: Synthesis, characterization and applications

Nanomaterials (NMs) tailored via conventional physicochemical routes play havoc with the environment that has led to the evolution of competent green routes for the actualization of a circular economy on an industrial-scale. Algae belonging to the class Cyanophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Phaeophyceae and Rhodophyceae have been harnessed as nano-machineries through intracellular and extracellular synthesis of gold (Au), silver (Ag) and several other metallic nanoparticles. Algae are an appealing platform for the production of diverse NMs, primarily due to the presence of bioactive compounds such as pigments and antioxidants in their cell extracts that act as biocompatible reductants. Chlorella spp. and Sargassum spp. have been extensively explored for the synthesis of nanoparticles having antimicrobial properties, which can potentially substitute conventional antibiotics. Characterization of nanoparticles (NPs) synthesised from algae has been done using advanced spectroscopic, diffractographic and microscopic techniques such as UV-Vis FT-IR, DLS, XPS, XRD, SEM, TEM, AFM, HR-TEM, and EDAX. The present paper reviews the information available on algae-mediated biosynthesis of various NPs, their characterization and applications in different domains.

Photochemical Synthesis and Catalytic Applications of Gold Nanoplates Fabricated Using Quercetin Diphosphate Macromolecules

The demand for safer design and synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) is on the increase with the ultimate goal of producing clean nanomaterials for biological applications. We hereby present a rapid, greener, and photochemical synthesis of gold nanoplates with sizes ranging from 10 to 200 nm using water-soluble quercetin diphosphate (QDP) macromolecules. The synthesis was achieved in water without the use of surfactants, reducing agents, or polymers. The edge length of the triangular nanoplates ranged from 50 to 1200 nm. Furthermore, the reduction of methylene blue was used to investigate the catalytic activity of AuNPs. The catalytic activity of triangular AuNPs was three times higher than that of the spherical AuNPs based on kinetic rate constants (k). The rate constants were 3.44 × 10^-2 and 1.11 × 10^-2 s^-1 for triangular and spherical AuNPs, respectively. The X-ray diffraction data of gold nanoplates synthesized by this method exhibited that the nanocrystals were mainly dominated by (111) facets which are in agreement to the nanoplates synthesized by using thermal and chemical approaches. The calculated relative diffraction peak intensity of (200), (220), and (311) in comparison with (111) was found to be 0.35, 0.17, and 0.15, respectively, which were lower than the corresponding standard values (JCPDS 04-0784). For example, (200)/(111) = 0.35 compared to 0.52 obtained from the standard (JCPDS 04-0784), indicating that the gold nanoplates are dominated by (111) facets. The calculated lattice from selected area electron diffraction data of the as-synthesized and after 1 year nanoplates was 4.060 and 4.088 Å, respectively. Our calculations were found to be in agreement with 4.078 Å for face-centered cubic gold (JCPDS 04-0784) and literature values of 4.07 Å. The computed QDP-Au complex demonstrated that the reduction process took place in the B ring of QDP. This approach contributes immensely to promoting the ideals of sustainable nanotechnology by eradicating the use of hazardous and toxic organic solvents.

Use of DNA-generated gold nanoparticles to radiosensitize and eradicate radioresistant glioma stem cells

The surface reactivity of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) is receiving attention as a radiosensitizer of cancer cells for radiation therapy and/or as a drug carrier to target cells. This study demonstrates the potential of DNA-AuNPs (prepared by mixing calf thymus DNA with HAuCl₄ solution) as a radiosensitizer of human glioma cells that have cancer stem cell (CSC)-like properties, to reduce their survival. CSC-like U251MG-P1 cells and their parental glioblastoma U251MG cells are treated with a prepared DNA-AuNP colloid. The radiosensitivity of the resultant AuNP-associated cells are significantly enhanced. To reveal the mechanism by which survival is reduced, the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), apoptosis induction, or DNA damage in the cells is assayed using the fluorescent dye DCFDA, annexin V-FITC/PI, and foci formation of γ-H2AX, respectively. X-ray irradiation with administration of AuNPs overcomes the radioresistance of U251MG-P1 cells. It does not induce ROS generation or apoptosis in the cells but enhances the number of abnormal nuclei with abundant γ-H2AX foci, which is judged as cell death by mitotic catastrophe. The AuNP association with the cells effectively induces mitotic catastrophe in x-ray-irradiated CSC-like cells, implicating that DNA-AuNPs might be a promising tool to develop an efficient radiosensitizer against CSC.

Block-copolymer assisted fabrication of anisotropic plasmonic nanostructures

The anisotropic nanostructures of noble metals are of great interest for plasmonic applications, due to the possibility of tuning the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) across the UV-visible-near infrared (UV-vis-NIR) without sacrificing the linewidth, as well as achieving larger local field enhancement. Here, we report a simple and promising fabrication method of anisotropic gold nanostructures film using polystyrene-b-poly(2vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P2VP) block copolymers (BCPs) as a template. In this approach, PS-b-P2VP spherical micelles were first synthesized as a template, followed by selective deposition of an Au precursor inside the P2VP core of the micelles, using an ethanol solution of Au salt. Subsequently, heat treatment of the precursor deposited BCP films followed by the removal of the BCP template produced anisotropic gold nanostructures of various shapes, such as octahedron, decahedron, tetrahedron, triangles, and triangular prism. A temperature and time dependent study during heat treatment shows the formation of clusters at a higher temperature. Furthermore, measurements of the ensemble extinction spectra of the anisotropic Au nanoparticle films showed two broad distinct LSPR peaks; one in the visible range (∼660 nm), and the other in the NIR range (∼875 nm). The electrodynamic simulation showed that octahedron and decahedron nanoparticles are responsible for the LSPR response in the visible; whereas the triangular shapes are responsible for the LSPR response in the NIR. Our work is expected to open up a new direction for the synthesis of anisotropic nanostructures of noble metals, that can be utilized to tune the LSPR response across the UV-vis-NIR range, using a simple BCP template-based method.

Green synthesis of gold nanoparticles using Artemisia dracunculus extract: control of the shape and size by varying synthesis conditions

In this study, selective green synthesis of gold nanoparticles (nAu) with the use of Tarragon extract (Artemisia dracunculus) was investigated. Characterization of the synthetized nAu was carried out using several techniques including: UV-Vis, SEM, zeta potential analysis, DLS, and ATR-FTIR. Based on measurements of Tarragon extract by HPLC-MS, significant chemical substances participating as reducing and stabilizing agents were identified. FTIR confirmed typical functional groups that could be found in these acids on the nAu surface, such as O-H, C=O and C-O. The effects of various parameters (concentration of Tarragon extract, Au precursor, and initial pH of the synthesis) on the shape and size of the nanoparticles have been investigated. UV-Vis and SEM confirmed the formation of nAu at various concentrations of the extract and Au precursor and showed correlation between the added extract concentration and shift in maximal absorbance towards higher frequencies, indicating the formation of smaller nanoplates. Zeta potential determined at various pH levels revealed that its value decreased with pH, but for all experiments in the pH range of 2.8 to 5.0, the value is below - 30 mV, an absolute value high enough for long-term nAu stability. In order to evaluate nAu catalytic activity, the reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol by sodium borohydride was used as a model system. The reaction takes place 1.5 times faster on Au-triangles than on Au-spherical NPs.

Synthesis, characterization and application of green seaweed mediated silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as antibacterial agents for water disinfection

A simple and eco-friendly method for the synthesis of hybrid bead silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) employing the aqueous extract derived from natural and renewable source namely tropical benthic green seaweed Ulva flexuosa was developed. This route involves the reduction of Ag⁺ ions anchored onto macro porous methacrylic acid copolymer beads to AgNPs for employing them as antibacterial agents for in vitro water disinfection. The seaweed extract itself acts as a reducing and stabilizing agent and requires no additional surfactant or capping agent for forming the AgNPs. The nanoparticles were analyzed using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy. The study elucidates that such biologically synthesized AgNPs exhibit potential antibacterial activity against two Gram positive (Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus) and two Gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) bacterial strains tested. The bacterial count in treated water was reduced to zero for all the strains. Atomic force microscopy was performed to confirm the pre- and post-state of the bacteria with reference to their treatment with AgNPs. Attributes like facile environment-friendly procedure, stability and high antibacterial potency propel the consideration of these AgNPs as promising antibacterial entities.

Two-Dimensional Metal Nanomaterials: Synthesis, Properties, and Applications

As one unique group of two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials, 2D metal nanomaterials have drawn increasing attention owing to their intriguing physiochemical properties and broad range of promising applications. In this Review, we briefly introduce the general synthetic strategies applied to 2D metal nanomaterials, followed by describing in detail the various synthetic methods classified in two categories, i.e. bottom-up methods and top-down methods. After introducing the unique physical and chemical properties of 2D metal nanomaterials, the potential applications of 2D metal nanomaterials in catalysis, surface enhanced Raman scattering, sensing, bioimaging, solar cells, and photothermal therapy are discussed in detail. Finally, the challenges and opportunities in this promising research area are proposed.

Synthesis of Triangular Silver and Gold Nanoprisms Using Consensus Sequence Tetratricopeptide Repeat Proteins

Anisotropic metallic nanoparticles, such as Au and Ag nanoprisms (NPSMs), have received tremendous attention for their application in catalysis, molecular sensing, signal amplification, bioimaging, and therapeutic applications due to their shape-dependent optical and physical properties. Herein, we present a protein-enabled synthetic strategy for the seeded growth of silver and gold NPSMs with low shape polydispersity, narrow size distribution, and tailored plasmonic absorbance. During the initial seed nucleation step, consensus sequence tetratricopeptide repeat (CTPR) proteins are utilized as potent stabilizers to facilitate the formation of planar-twinned Ag seeds. High yield production of well-defined Ag/Au NPSMs is achieved, respectively, by adding CTPR-stabilized Ag seeds into the growth solutions containing metal precursor, mild reducing agent, sodium halide, and additional CTPR.

Green methods for the synthesis of metal nanoparticles using biogenic reducing agents: a review

Metal nanoparticles are being extensively used in a variety of sectors, including drug delivery, cancer treatment, wastewater treatment, DNA analysis, antibacterial agents, biosensors and catalysts. Unlike chemically produced nanoparticles, biosynthesized metal nanoparticles based on green chemistry perspectives impose limited hazards to the environment and are relatively biocompatible. This review is therefore focused on green methods for nanoparticle synthesis by emphasizing on microbial synthesis using bacteria, fungi, algae, and yeasts, as well as phytosynthesis using plant extracts. Furthermore, a detailed description of bioreducing and capping/stabilizing agents involved in the biosynthesis mechanism using these green sources is presented.

Biosynthesis of Inorganic Nanoparticles: A Fresh Look at the Control of Shape, Size and Composition

Several methodologies have been devised for the design of nanomaterials. The "Holy Grail" for materials scientists is the cost-effective, eco-friendly synthesis of nanomaterials with controlled sizes, shapes and compositions, as these features confer to the as-produced nanocrystals unique properties making them appropriate candidates for valuable bio-applications. The present review summarizes published data regarding the production of nanomaterials with special features via sustainable methodologies based on the utilization of natural bioresources. The richness of the latter, the diversity of the routes adopted and the tuned experimental parameters have led to the fabrication of nanomaterials belonging to different chemical families with appropriate compositions and displaying interesting sizes and shapes. It is expected that these outstanding findings will encourage researchers and attract newcomers to continue and extend the exploration of possibilities offered by nature and the design of innovative and safer methodologies towards the synthesis of unique nanomaterials, possessing desired features and exhibiting valuable properties that can be exploited in a profusion of fields.

Anisotropic noble metal nanoparticles: Synthesis, surface functionalization and applications in biosensing, bioimaging, drug delivery and theranostics

Anisotropic nanoparticles have fascinated scientists and engineering communities for over a century because of their unique physical and chemical properties. In recent years, continuous advances in design and fabrication of anisotropic nanoparticles have opened new avenues for application in various areas of biology, chemistry and physics. Anisotropic nanoparticles have the plasmon absorption in the visible as well as near-infrared (NIR) region, which enables them to be used for crucial applications such as biological imaging, medical diagnostics and therapy ("theranostics"). Here, we describe the progress in anisotropic nanoparticles achieved since the millennium in the area of preparation including various shapes and modification of the particle surface, and in areas of application by providing examples of applications in biosensing, bio-imaging, drug delivery and theranostics. Furthermore, we also explain various mechanisms involved in cellular uptake of anisotropic nanoparticles, and conclude with our opinion on various obstacles that limit their applications in biomedical field.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

Anisotropy at the molecular level has always fascinated scientists and engineering communities for over a century, however, the research on novel methods through which shape and size of nanoparticles can be precisely controlled has opened new avenues for anisotropic nanoparticles in various areas of biology, chemistry and physics. In this manuscript, we describe progress achieved since the millennium in the areas of preparation of various shapes of anisotropic nanoparticles, investigate various methods involved in modifying the surface of these NPs, and provide examples of applications in biosensing and bio-imaging, drug delivery and theranostics. We also present mechanisms involved in cellular uptake of nanoparticles, describe different methods of preparation of anisotropic nanoparticles including biomimetic and photochemical synthesis, and conclude with our opinion on various obstacles that limit their applications in biomedical field.

Seed-Mediated Growth of Colloidal Metal Nanocrystals

Seed-mediated growth is a powerful and versatile approach for the synthesis of colloidal metal nanocrystals. The vast allure of this approach mainly stems from the staggering degree of control one can achieve over the size, shape, composition, and structure of nanocrystals. These parameters not only control the properties of nanocrystals but also determine their relevance to, and performance in, various applications. The ingenuity and artistry inherent to seed-mediated growth offer extensive promise, enhancing a number of existing applications and opening the door to new developments. This Review demonstrates how the diversity of metal nanocrystals can be expanded with endless opportunities by using seeds with well-defined and controllable internal structures in conjunction with a proper combination of capping agent and reduction kinetics. New capabilities and future directions are also highlighted.

Utilizing metal tolerance potential of soil fungus for efficient synthesis of gold nanoparticles with superior catalytic activity for degradation of rhodamine B

In recent years, the surging demand of nanomaterials has boosted unprecedented expansion of research for the development of high yielding and sustainable synthesis methods which can deliver nanomaterials with desired characteristics. Unlike the well-established physico-chemical methods which have various limitations, biological methods inspired by mimicking natural biomineralization processes have great potential for nanoparticle synthesis. An eco-friendly and sustainable biological method that deliver particles with well-defined shape, size and compositions can be developed by selecting a proficient organism followed by fine tuning of various process parameter. The present study revealed high metal tolerance ability of a soil fungus Cladosporium oxysporum AJP03 and its potential for extracellular synthesis of gold nanoparticles. The morphology, composition and crystallinity of nanoparticles were confirmed using standard techniques. The synthesized particles were quasi-spherical in shape with fcc packing and an average particle size of 72.32 ± 21.80 nm. A series of experiments were conducted to study the effect of different process parameters on particle size and yield. Biomass: water ratio of 1:5 and 1 mM precursor salt concentration at physiological pH (7.0) favoured the synthesis of well-defined gold nanoparticles with maximum yield. The as-synthesized nanoparticles showed excellent catalytic efficiency towards sodium borohydride mediated reduction of rhodamine B (2.5 × 10(-5) M) within 7 min of reaction time under experimental conditions. Presence of proteins as capping material on the nanoparticle surface was found to be responsible for this remarkable catalytic efficiency. The present approach can be extrapolated to develop controlled and up-scalable process for mycosynthesis of nanoparticles for diverse applications.

Fabrication of Metal and Metal Oxide Nanoparticles by Algae and their Toxic Effects

Of all the aquatic organisms, algae are a good source of biomolecules. Since algae contain pigments, proteins, carbohydrates, fats, nucleic acids and secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, some aromatic compounds, macrolides, peptides and terpenes, they act as reducing agents to produce nanoparticles from metal salts without producing any toxic by-product. Once the algal biomolecules are identified, the nanoparticles of desired shape or size may be fabricated. The metal and metal oxide nanoparticles thus synthesized have been investigated for their antimicrobial activity against several gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial strains and fungi. Their dimension is controlled by temperature, incubation time, pH and concentration of the solution. In this review, we have attempted to update the procedure of nanoparticle synthesis from algae, their characterization by UV-vis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering and application in cutting-edge areas.

Noble metal, oxide and chalcogenide-based nanomaterials from scalable phototrophic culture systems

Phototrophic cell or tissue cultures can produce nanostructured noble metals, oxides and chalcogenides at ambient temperatures and pressures in an aqueous environment and without the need for potentially toxic solvents or the generation of dangerous waste products. These "green" synthesized nanobiomaterials can be used to fabricate biosensors and bio-reporting tools, theranostic vehicles, medical imaging agents, as well as tissue engineering scaffolds and biomaterials. While successful at the lab and experimental scales, significant barriers still inhibit the development of higher capacity processes. While scalability issues in traditional algal bioprocess engineering are well known, such as the controlled delivery of photons and gas-exchange, the large-scale algal synthesis of nanomaterials introduces additional parameters to be understood, i.e., nanoparticle (NP) formation kinetics and mechanisms, biological transport of metal cations and the effect of environmental conditions on the final form of the NPs. Only after a clear understanding of the kinetics and mechanisms can the strain selection, photobioreactor type, medium pH and ionic strength, mean light intensity and other relevant parameters be specified for an optimal bioprocess. To this end, this mini-review will examine the current best practices and understanding of these phenomena to establish a path forward for this technology.

Rapid Seedless Synthesis of Gold Nanoplates with Microscaled Edge Length in a High Yield and Their Application in SERS

We report a facile and reproducible approach toward rapid seedless synthesis of single crystalline gold nanoplates with edge length on the order of microns. The reaction is carried out by reducing gold ions with ascorbic acid in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). Reaction temperature and molar ratio of CTAB/Au are critical for the formation of gold nanoplates in a high yield, which are, respectively, optimized to be 85 °C and 6. The highest yield that can be achieved is 60 % at the optimized condition. The synthesis to achieve the microscaled gold nanoplates can be finished in less than 1 h under proper reaction conditions. Therefore, the reported synthesis approach is a time- and cost-effective one. The gold nanoplates were further employed as the surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrates and investigated individually. Interestingly, only those adsorbed with gold nanoparticles exhibit pronounced Raman signals of probe molecules, where a maximum enhancement factor of 1.7 × 10⁷ was obtained. The obtained Raman enhancement can be ascribed to the plasmon coupling between the gold nanoplate and the nanoparticle adsorbed onto it.

Tubelike Gold Sphere-Attapulgite Nanocomposites with a High Photothermal Conversion Ability in the Near-Infrared Region for Enhanced Cancer Photothermal Therapy

Near-infrared (NIR)-induced photothermal therapy (PTT) is now considered to be a promising and highly efficient method for tumor therapy. Photothermal agents play a crucial role in PTT, and they are required to possess the ability to harvest NIR light and transform the photon energy into heat energy. This work reports a facile method to synthesize a new PTT agent, which is based on the electrostatic binding of the Au nanospheres (Au NSs, ∼15 nm) to the surface of a nanometer-sized mineral, attapulgite, to form tubelike Au-attapulgite nanocomposites. These nanocomposites consist of numerous Au NSs, which are linked to each other along the attapulgite surface. The nanocomposites exhibit similar localized surface plasmon resonance absorption characteristics to those of Au nanorods with a longitudinal absorption mode that shifts to the NIR region (∼670 nm). Moreover, the nanocomposites have a high Cabs/Csca ratio (cross section of absorption to scattering) and photothermal conversion efficiency of 25.6%. Their photothermal therapy effect is studied using A549 cells and A549 cell-bearing nude mice as examples. The results indicate that the nanocomposites can be effectively taken up by the cells, and the nanocomposites show good biocompatibility. The A549 cells almost died after they were incubated with the nanocomposites (at 100 μg mL(-1)) for 12 h and irradiated by an 808 nm laser with a power density of 0.5 W cm(-2) for 15 min. The tumors of nude mice can also be effectively ablated without regrowth during the period of observation (at least 10 d) after photothermal therapy.
