Abstract
The time-resolved CIDNP method can provide information about degenerate exchange reactions (DEEs) involving short-lived radicals. In the temperature range from 8 to 65 °C, the DEE reactions of the guanosine-5'-monophosphate anion GMP(-H)- with the neutral radical GMP(-H)•, of the N-acetyl tyrosine anion N-AcTyrO- with a neutral radical N-AcTyrO•, and of the tyrosine anion TyrO- with a neutral radical TyrO• were studied. In all the studied cases, the radicals were formed in the reaction of quenching triplet 2,2'-dipyridyl. The reorganization energies were obtained from Arrhenius plots. The rate constant of the reductive electron transfer reaction in the pair GMP(-H)•/TyrO- was determined at T = 25 °C. Rate constants of the GMP(-H)• radical reduction reactions with TyrO- and N-AcTyrO- anions calculated by the Marcus cross-relation differ from the experimental ones by two orders of magnitude. The rate constants of several other electron transfer reactions involving GMP(-H)-/GMP(-H)•, N-AcTyrO-/N-AcTyrO•, and TyrO-/TyrO• pairs calculated by cross-relation agree well with the experimental values. The rate of nuclear paramagnetic relaxation was found for the 3,5 and β-protons of TyrO• and N-AcTyrO•, the 8-proton of GMP(-H)•, and the 3,4-protons of DPH• at each temperature. In all cases, the dependences of the rate of nuclear paramagnetic relaxation on temperature are described by the Arrhenius dependence.

Abstract
The review describes the application of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to study kinetics of folding, refolding and aggregation of proteins, RNA and DNA. Time-resolved NMR experiments can be conducted in a reversible or an irreversible manner. In particular, irreversible folding experiments pose large requirements for (i) signal-to-noise due to the time limitations and (ii) synchronising of the refolding steps. Thus, this contribution discusses the application of methods for signal-to-noise increases, including dynamic nuclear polarisation, hyperpolarisation and photo-CIDNP for the study of time-resolved NMR studies. Further, methods are reviewed ranging from pressure and temperature jump, light induction to rapid mixing to induce rapidly non-equilibrium conditions required to initiate folding.

Abstract
The two inverse peptides methionine-valine (Met-Val) and valine-methionine (Val-Met) are investigated in an oxidative radiolysis process in water. The OH radical yields products with very different absorption spectra and concentration effects: Met-Val yields one main product with a band at about 400 nm and other products at higher energies; there is no concentration effect. Val-Met yields at least three products, with a striking concentration effect. Molecular simulations are performed with a combination of the Monte Carlo, density functional theory, and reaction field methods. The simulation of the possible transients enables an interpretation of the radiolysis: (1) Met-Val undergoes an H atom uptake leaving mainly a neutral radical with a 2-center-3-electron (2c-3e) SN bond, which cannot dimerize. Other radicals are present at higher energies. (2) Val-Met undergoes mainly an electron uptake leaving a cation monomer with a (2c-3e) SO bond and a cation dimer with a (2c-3e) SS bond. At higher energies, neutral radicals are possible. This cation monomer can transfer a proton toward a neutral peptide, leaving a neutral radical.

Abstract
RATIONALE Electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) is an emerging tool for reaction monitoring. It can be accompanied by reaction acceleration in charged droplets. METHODS The time course of the bulk reaction of indoline-2,3-dione with phenylhydrazine in methanol to produce 3-(2- phenylhydrazono)indolin-2-one was monitored by ESI. Both nanoESI and electrosonic spray ionization (ESSI) were used for this study as representing two common forms of ionization for reaction monitoring. The effect on product yield of the distance the droplets travel between the source and the MS inlet was varied and product/starting material ratios were examined. RESULTS Product yield is dramatically increased by increasing the distance. At short distances reaction monitoring can be performed without acceleration and at greater distances reaction acceleration occurs. This distance effect over the course of the reaction roughly parallels the time dependence of the bulk-phase reaction. CONCLUSIONS Reaction acceleration in droplets is attributed to solvent evaporation leading to increased surface to volume ratios. An acceleration factor of 10(4) , measured relative to the bulk reaction at short times, is readily achieved by simply increasing the droplet distance of flight showing that the same ionization source can be used to monitor reactions with or without acceleration. Abstract
Conjugates of 2’-deoxyguanosine, L-tryptophan and benzophenone designed to study pathways of fast radical reactions by the photo Chemically Induced Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (photo-CIDNP) method were obtained by the phosphotriester block liquid phase synthesis. The phosphotriester approach to the oligonucleotide synthesis was shown to be a versatile and economic strategy for preparing the required amount of high quality samples of nucleotide–amino acid conjugates.

Abstract
CIDNP (chemically induced dynamic nuclear polarization) arises in radical pairs or biradicals but is detected in the diamagnetic reaction products. Hence, it can be used not only to identify and characterize both types of species but also to establish the pathways connecting precursors, paramagnetic intermediates and products, and to employ the polarizations as labels to individual nuclei. Recent applications of CIDNP to elucidate the mechanisms of photochemical reactions are reviewed, which illustrate all these facets.

Abstract
The efficiency of the chemical pathway of DNA repair is studied by time-resolved chemically induced dynamic nuclear polarization (CIDNP) using the model system containing guanosyl base radicals, and tryptophan as the electron donor. Radicals were generated photochemically by pulsed laser irradiation of a solution containing the photosensitizer 2,2'-dipyridyl, guanosine-5'-monophosphate, and N-acetyl tryptophan. Depending on the pH of the aqueous solution, four protonation states of the guanosyl radical are formed via electron or hydrogen atom transfer to the triplet excited dye. The rate constants of electron transfer from the amino acid to the guanosyl radical were determined by quantitative analysis of the CIDNP kinetics, which is very sensitive to the efficiency of radical reactions in the bulk, and rate constants vary from (1.0 +/- 0.3) x 10(9) M(-1) s(-1) for the cation and dication radicals of the nucleotide to (1.2 +/- 0.3) x 10(7) M(-1) s(-1) for the radical in its anionic form. They were found to be higher than the corresponding values for electron transfer in the case of N-acetyl tyrosine as the reducing agent.

Abstract
As a model of chemical DNA repair, the reductive electron transfer from the aromatic amino acid tyrosine to the radical of the purine base guanosine monophosphate (GMP) was studied by time-resolved chemically induced dynamic nuclear polarization (CIDNP). The guanosyl radicals were photochemically generated in the quenching reaction of the triplet excited dye 2,2'-dipyridyl. Depending on the pH of the aqueous solution, four different guanosyl radicals were observed. The identification of the radicals was possible because of the high sensitivity of CIDNP to distinguish them through their ability or disability of participating in the degenerate electron hopping reaction with the diamagnetic molecules of guanosine monophosphate in the ground state. The CIDNP kinetics in this three-component system containing the dye, GMP, and N-acetyl tyrosine is strongly dependent on the efficiency of the electron-transfer reaction from tyrosine to the nucleotide radical. Quantitative analysis of the CIDNP kinetics obtained at different concentrations of the amino acid, together with the comparison with the CIDNP kinetics of the two-component systems (dipyridyl/tyrosine and dipyridyl/GMP) allowed for the determination of the rate constant ke of the reductive electron-transfer reaction for five pairs of reactants, with different protonation states depending on the pH: GH++*/TyrOH (pH 1.3), G+*/TyrOH (pH 2.9), G(-H)*/TyrOH (pH 7.5), G(-H)*/TyrO- (pH 11.3), and G(-2H)-*/TyrO- (pH 13.3). The rate constant ke varies from (7.1 +/- 3.0) x 10(8) M-1 s-1 (pH 1.3, 2.9) to less than 6 x 10(6) M-1 s-1 (pH 13.3).

Abstract
Photooxidation of sulfur-containing amino acids and derivatives readily occurs upon visible-light irradiation in the presence of flavins. The sulfur moiety seems pivotal for interaction, as was determined from kinetic analyses using laser flash photolysis spectroscopy. After photooxidation, the resulting radical intermediates were characterized by addition to a spin trap, followed by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and evaluation of the coupling constants. The presence of the proposed radical intermediates was strongly supported by the identification of the reaction products using mass spectrometry. Accordingly, feasible degradation pathways for various sulfur-containing amino acids and derivatives were proposed. It was finally proven that flavin-induced photoproduction of sulfhydryl radicals and recombination with a 3-methylbut-2-enyl radical, derived from the photodegradation of hop-derived isohumulones, are decisive in the formation of beer lightstruck flavor.
