Photophysical Properties of Photoactive Molecules with Conjugated Push−Pull Structures

Optically induced charge-transfer in donor-acceptor-substituted p- and m- C2B10H12 carboranes

Icosahedral carboranes, C2B10H12, have long been considered to be aromatic but the extent of conjugation between these clusters and their substituents is still being debated. m- and p-Carboranes are compared with m- and p-phenylenes as conjugated bridges in optical functional chromophores with a donor and an acceptor as substituents here. The absorption and fluorescence data for both carboranes from experimental techniques (including femtosecond transient absorption, time-resolved fluorescence and broadband fluorescence upconversion) show that the absorption and emission processes involve strong intramolecular charge transfer between the donor and acceptor substituents via the carborane cluster. From quantum chemical calculations on these carborane systems, the charge transfer process depends on the relative torsional angles of the donor and acceptor groups where an overlap between the two frontier orbitals exists in the bridging carborane cluster.

Unique structural effect on the fluorosolvatochromism and dual fluorescence emission of D-π-A+ cationic chromophores with furyl bridge. An approach to white light emitters

Photophysical behavior of two D - π - A+ cationic compounds with the same furyl bridge and nicotinamidine group as an electron acceptor moiety and two electron donating groups, namely methoxy (I) and N,N-dimethylamino (II) groups was examined using steady-state and time-resolved techniques in variety of solvents. Time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations were performed in some representative solvents and compared with the experimental results. Steady state and time-resolved studies in different solvents reveal that fluorescence emission of (I) is ascribed to an emission from an excited state (ICT) with higher dipole moment than the ground state while the emission of (II) is a dual emission from a state with high charge transfer nature (ICT) in addition to the locally excited state (LE). The fluorescence emission spectra of (II) were found to depend on the excitation wavelength and an increase in the excitation wavelength led to the formation of a longer wavelength emission band with lower quantum yield. It has also been found that the fluorescence excitation spectra were dependent on the emission wavelength. The effect of solvent on the nature of dual emission was examined. Correlation of the photophysical properties of the excited states of (I) and (II) with the solvent polarity, ε, reveals the charge transfer nature of (I) and the long wavelength emission band of (II), while their correlation with the solvent polarity parameter (ETN) shows two different trends when the solvents are divided to aprotic and protic solvents. For precise investigation of the impact of each solvent parameter on each photophysical property, Catalán's and Laurence's four parametric linear solvation energy relationships were studied. We have found that the non-specific interactions of the solvent are primarily responsible for controlling the photophysical properties, as demonstrated by Catalán's and Laurence's treatments. DFT and TDDFT calculations were used to anticipate the dipole moments in the ground and excited states and geometry of both states.

Ultrafast excited state relaxation dynamics of pyran-based D-π-A systems: solvent polarity controls the triplet state

The excited state relaxation dynamics of V-shaped D-π-A systems having 4H-pyranylidene appended barbituric acid as an acceptor and diphenylamine (TPAPBA) and diethyl amine (EAPBA) as donors were investigated using steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy along with theoretical optimization. The steady-state photophysical characterization exhibited the bathochromic shift of the emission maximum (∼6400 cm-1) and large change in the dipole moment (∼24D) with an increase of solvent polarity, reflecting the occurrence of the intramolecular charge transfer state (ICT) in the excited state. The nanosecond and femtosecond transient absorption spectra of these derivatives in a non-polar solvent, toluene, reveal that the excited state relaxation pathway involving a local excited state (LE) decayed to ICT followed by the formation of a twisted ICT state by conformational relaxation, finally leading to the triplet state. The lack of observation of a triplet state in the polar solvent, acetonitrile, signifies that the relaxation dynamics of V-shaped triads in the excited state are influenced by the polarity of the solvent.

Photophysics and charge transfer in oligo(thiophene) based conjugated diblock oligomers

This paper reports an investigation of the electronic structure and photophysical properties of two "diblock" π-conjugated oligomers (T4-TBT and T8-TBT) that feature electron rich tetra(thiophene) (T4) or octa(thiophene) (T8) segments linked to an electron poor 4,7-bis(2-thienyl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (TBT) moiety. Electrochemistry and UV-visible absorption spectroscopy reveals that the diblock oligomers display redox and absorption features that can be attributed to the Tn and TBT units. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) calculations support the experimental electrochemistry and optical spectroscopy results, suggesting that the frontier orbitals on the diblock oligomers retain characteristics of the individual π-conjugated segments. However, low energy optical transitions are anticipated to arise from Tn to TBT charge transfer. Fluorescence spectroscopy on the diblock oligomers reveals that the oligomers feature strongly solvent dependent fluorescence. In non-polar solvents (hexane, toluene), the emission is structured with a moderate Stokes shift; however, in more polar solvents the emission becomes broader, and red-shifts significantly. Transient absorption spectroscopy on timescales from femtoseconds (fs) to microseconds (μs) reveals that in non-polar solvents excitation produces a singlet excited state (LE) that decays uniformly to the ground state in parallel with intersystem crossing to a triplet state. By contrast, in more polar solvents, excitation produces a very short-lived excited state (1-3 ps) which evolves rapidly into a second excited state that is attributed to the charge transfer (CT) state. The fast dynamics are associated with crossing from the LE state, which is populated initially by photoexcitation, into the CT state, which then decays to the ground state. The photophysical properties and dynamics of the LE and CT excited states are very similar for T4-TBT and T8-TBT, suggesting that the length of the oligo(thiophene) segment does not have a strong influence on the energy, structure or dynamics of the LE and CT excited states.

Dual donor-acceptor covalent organic frameworks for hydrogen peroxide photosynthesis

Constructing photocatalytically active and stable covalent organic frameworks containing both oxidative and reductive reaction centers remain a challenge. In this study, benzotrithiophene-based covalent organic frameworks with spatially separated redox centers are rationally designed for the photocatalytic production of hydrogen peroxide from water and oxygen without sacrificial agents. The triazine-containing framework demonstrates high selectivity for H2O2 photogeneration, with a yield rate of 2111 μM h-1 (21.11 μmol h-1 and 1407 μmol g-1 h-1) and a solar-to-chemical conversion efficiency of 0.296%. Codirectional charge transfer and large energetic differences between linkages and linkers are verified in the double donor-acceptor structures of periodic frameworks. The active sites are mainly concentrated on the electron-acceptor fragments near the imine bond, which regulate the electron distribution of adjacent carbon atoms to optimally reduce the Gibbs free energy of O2* and OOH* intermediates during the formation of H2O2.

Synthesis, photophysical and nonlinear optical properties of push-pull tetrazoles

A 2,5-disubstituted tetrazole with p-nitrophenyl and 3-pyridyl units as acceptors (1a), and three push–pull tetrazoles with p-nitrophenyl as an acceptor and phenyl (1b), 2-(dibenzo[b,d]furan-4-yl) (1c), and 4-(N,N-diphenylamino)phenyl (1d) as donor groups, were synthesized by copper-catalyzed aerobic C–N coupling of p-nitrophenyl tetrazole with appropriately substituted aryl boronic acids. The absorption and emission spectra of 1a–c showed minimal dependence on the polarity of the solvent; however, in the case of 1d a blue shift was noted in the longest absorption band (λ₁) as the polarity increased. The fluorescence intensity of the title compounds was found to be solvent-dependent; however, no apparent correlation to solvent polarity could be established. The absorption and emission characteristics of 1a–d were also influenced by the nature of the substituent as 1d, bearing a strong electron donating 4-(N,N-diphenylamino)phenyl group, displayed a significant red shifted absorption (λ₁) as well as emission (λ_em) bands compared to other compounds. Time dependent density functional calculations (CAM-B3LYP/6-311++G**) revealed that the longest wavelength band (λ₁) is associated with an intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) from HOMO/HOMO-1/HOMO-2 → LUMO/LUMO+1 in these molecules. The first hyperpolarizability values, β_HRS, of 1a–d were measured using the solution-based hyper-Rayleigh scattering technique using a femtosecond Ti:Sapphire laser and the highest NLO activity was measured for 1d with the greatest push–pull characteristics. A strong correlation was observed between the calculated hyperpolarizability (β_tot) and experimentally measured values (β_HRS).

Theoretical and Experimental Investigations of Large Stokes Shift Fluorophores Based on a Quinoline Scaffold

A series of novel styrylquinolines with the benzylidene imine moiety were synthesized and spectroscopically characterized for their applicability in cellular staining. The spectroscopic study revealed absorption in the ultraviolet-visible region (360-380 nm) and emission that covered the blue-green range of the light (above 500 nm). The fluorescence quantum yields were also determined, which amounted to 0.079 in the best-case scenario. The structural features that are behind these values are also discussed. An analysis of the spectroscopic properties and the theoretical calculations indicated the charge-transfer character of an emission, which was additionally evaluated using the Lippert-Mataga equation. Changes in geometry in the ground and excited states, which had a significant influence on the emission process, are also discussed. Additionally, the capability of the newly synthesized compounds for cellular staining was also investigated. These small molecules could effectively penetrate through the cellular membrane. Analyses of the images that were obtained with several of the tested styrylquinolines indicated their accumulation in organelles such as the mitochondria and the endoplasmic reticulum.

Synergistic Approach of Ultrafast Spectroscopy and Molecular Simulations in the Characterization of Intramolecular Charge Transfer in Push-Pull Molecules

The comprehensive characterization of Intramolecular Charge Transfer (ICT) stemming in push-pull molecules with a delocalized π-system of electrons is noteworthy for a bespoke design of organic materials, spanning widespread applications from photovoltaics to nanomedicine imaging devices. Photo-induced ICT is characterized by structural reorganizations, which allows the molecule to adapt to the new electronic density distribution. Herein, we discuss recent photophysical advances combined with recent progresses in the computational chemistry of photoactive molecular ensembles. We focus the discussion on femtosecond Transient Absorption Spectroscopy (TAS) enabling us to follow the transition from a Locally Excited (LE) state to the ICT and to understand how the environment polarity influences radiative and non-radiative decay mechanisms. In many cases, the charge transfer transition is accompanied by structural rearrangements, such as the twisting or molecule planarization. The possibility of an accurate prediction of the charge-transfer occurring in complex molecules and molecular materials represents an enormous advantage in guiding new molecular and materials design. We briefly report on recent advances in ultrafast multidimensional spectroscopy, in particular, Two-Dimensional Electronic Spectroscopy (2DES), in unraveling the ICT nature of push-pull molecular systems. A theoretical description at the atomistic level of photo-induced molecular transitions can predict with reasonable accuracy the properties of photoactive molecules. In this framework, the review includes a discussion on the advances from simulation and modeling, which have provided, over the years, significant information on photoexcitation, emission, charge-transport, and decay pathways. Density Functional Theory (DFT) coupled with the Time-Dependent (TD) framework can describe electronic properties and dynamics for a limited system size. More recently, Machine Learning (ML) or deep learning approaches, as well as free-energy simulations containing excited state potentials, can speed up the calculations with transferable accuracy to more complex molecules with extended system size. A perspective on combining ultrafast spectroscopy with molecular simulations is foreseen for optimizing the design of photoactive compounds with tunable properties.

Photophysical properties and fluorosolvatochromism of D–π–A thiophene based derivatives

Solvation-dependent photophysical properties of two push–pull thiophene-based compounds with donor–π–acceptor (D–π–A) structures were investigated using absorption, fluorescence emission and time resolved spectroscopy, and supported by different solvation models. Intramolecular charge transfer characteristics of the structurally similar 2-fluoro-4-(5-(4-methoxyphenyl)thiophen-2-yl)benzonitrile (MOT) and 4-(5-(4-(dimethylamino)phenyl)thiophen-2-yl)-2-fluorobenzonitrile (DMAT) were investigated. Significant enhancement of intramolecular charge transfer strength has been observed through molecular structure modification of the electron donating group from a methoxy to dimethylamine group. Ground state absorption spectra show a small red shift of about 10 nm and 18 nm while the fluorescence emission spectra show a large red shift of about 66 nm and 162 nm on changing from the nonpolar cyclohexane to the aprotic polar DMSO for MOT and DMAT, respectively. Dipole moment change from the ground state to the charge transfer excited state is calculated to be 6.6 D in MOT and 9.0 D in DMAT. The fluorescence quantum yield, fluorescence lifetime and the derived radiative and non-radiative rate constants were found to be better correlated to the emission energy rather than any of the solvent properties. Three multi-parametric relationships were used in the interpretation of the specific versus non-specific solute–solvent interactions, namely, Kamlet–Taft, Catalán and Laurence et al. models. The findings of these approaches are used to extract useful information about different aspects of solvent effects on the photophysical properties of the two studied compounds. Kamlet–Taft solvatochromic model indicates that non-specific interactions are dominant in controlling the photophysical properties. Catalán's solvent dipolarity/polarizability parameter is found to play a significant role in solvatochromic behaviour which is also designated by the Laurence model.

An Ionic 1,4-Bis(styryl)benzene-Based Fluorescent Probe for Mercury(II) Detection in Water via Deprotection of the Thioacetal Group

Highly sensitive and selective mercury detection in aqueous media is urgently needed because mercury poisoning usually results from exposure to water-soluble forms of mercury by inhalation and/or ingesting. An ionic conjugated oligoelectrolye (M1Q) based on 1,4-bis(styryl)benzene was synthesized as a fluorescent mercury(II) probe. The thioacetal moiety and quaternized ammonium group were incorporated for Hg²⁺ recognition and water solubility. A neutral Hg²⁺ probe (M1) was also prepared based on the same molecular backbone, and their sensor characteristics were investigated in a mixture of acetonitrile/water and in water. In the presence of Hg²⁺, the thioacetal group was converted to aldehyde functionality, and the resulting photoluminescence intensity decreased. In water, M1Q successfully demonstrated highly sensitive detection, showing a binding toward Hg²⁺ that was ~15 times stronger and a signal on/off ratio twice as high, compared to M1 in acetonitrile/water. The thioacetal deprotection by Hg²⁺ ions was substantially facilitated in water without an organic cosolvent. The limit of detection was measured to be 7 nM with a detection range of 10–180 nM in 100% aqueous medium.

Ultrafast Investigation of Intramolecular Charge Transfer and Solvation Dynamics of Tetrahydro[5]-helicene-Based Imide Derivatives

We report the excited-state intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) characteristics of four tetrahydro[5] helicene-based imide (THHBI) derivatives with various electron-donating substitutes in different polarity of solvents using steady-state, time-resolved transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy. It is found that, the small bathochromic-shift of the absorption spectra but large red shift of the emission spectra for all dyes with increasing solvent polarity indicates the larger dipole moment of the excited state compared to ground state. The results of theoretical calculations exhibit the charge transfer from the terminal donors to helical backbone, which accounts for the degrees of red shift of the emission spectra from different extent of ICT nature. Time-resolved TA spectra recorded as a function of electron-donating substitutes and solvent polarity show the dye with stronger donors (THHBI-PhNPh2) in more polar solvent behaves faster excited-state ICT relaxation, leading to the formation of solvent-stabilized ICT state (ICT' state) from the excited ICT state; The dyes (THHBI-Ph, THHBI-PhCF3 and THHBI-PhOMe) with relative weaker donors show weaker dependence on solvent polarity, and instead of that intersystem crossing (ISC) becomes possible from ICT state to triplet state.

Unparalleled Ease of Access to a Library of Biheteroaryl Fluorophores via Oxidative Cross-Coupling Reactions: Discovery of Photostable NIR Probe for Mitochondria

The development of straightforward accesses to organic functional materials through C-H activation is a revolutionary trend in organic synthesis. In this article, we propose a concise strategy to construct a large library of donor-acceptor-type biheteroaryl fluorophores via the palladium-catalyzed oxidative C-H/C-H cross-coupling of electron-deficient 2H-indazoles with electron-rich heteroarenes. The directly coupled biheteroaryl fluorophores, named Indazo-Fluors, exhibit continuously tunable full-color emissions with quantum yields up to 93% and large Stokes shifts up to 8705 cm(-1) in CH2Cl2. By further fine-tuning of the substituent on the core skeleton, Indazo-Fluor 3l (FW = 274; λem = 725 nm) is obtained as the lowest molecular weight near-infrared (NIR) fluorophore with emission wavelength over 720 nm in the solid state. The NIR dye 5h specifically lights up mitochondria in living cells with bright red luminescence. Typically, commercially available mitochondria trackers suffer from poor photostability. Indazo-Fluor 5h exhibits superior photostability and very low cytotoxicity, which would be a prominent reagent for in vivo mitochondria imaging.

Unexpected multiple activated steps in the excited state decay of some bis(phenylethynyl)-fluorenes and -anthracenes

The temperature effect on the photophysical parameters of four acetylene-derivatives [bis(phenylethynyl)-anthracenes and -fluorenes with substituents of different electron acceptor efficiencies] has been investigated by absorption and emission spectroscopy, using stationary and pulsed (ns/fs resolution) techniques. The nature of the central nucleus (anthracene or fluorene) and the peripheral electron-withdrawing group (nitro or formyl) strongly affect the deactivation of the excited states of these push-pull molecules. In some cases the study evidenced an interesting role of two activated steps in the deactivation of the excited singlet state, namely an activated inter-system crossing to an upper triplet state of n,π* nature (previously hypothesized on the basis of TD-DFT calculations) and a sort of activated internal conversion, discussed also on the basis of maximum entropy method analysis of the fluorescence decay data. Nicely, an efficient ISC was found for the fluorene-derivatives where small energy gaps between S1 (π,π*) and Tn (n,π*) states had been calculated while no activated ISC was evidenced in the case of anthryl-derivatives where higher S1-Tn energy gaps are expected. A peculiar temperature effect for a fluorene-derivative was pointed out and also explained on the basis of quantum-mechanical calculations at the DFT level taking into account the solvation effects by means of the conductor-like polarizable continuum model CPCM. The presence of dual emission, at first evidenced by a shoulder in the emission spectrum of the fluorene-derivative featuring a peripheral formyl group in dichloromethane at low temperatures, was nicely confirmed by femtosecond up-conversion measurements at room temperature.

Effects of Exciton Polarity in Charge-Transfer Polymer/PCBM Bulk Heterojunction Films

Charge-transfer copolymers with local electron density gradients, systematically modified by quantity and position of fluorination, result in widely variable (2-8%) power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). Ultrafast, near-infrared, transient absorption spectroscopy on the corresponding films reveals the influence of exciton polarity on ultrafast populations and decay dynamics for the charge-separated and charge-transfer states as well as their strong correlation to device PCEs. By using an excitation energy-dependent, dynamic red shift in the transient absorption signal for the polymer cation, the exciton polarity induced by push-pull interactions within each polymer fragment is shown to enhance charge dissociation on time scales of tens to hundreds of picoseconds after excitation. These results suggest the important role played by the local electronic structure not only for exciton dissociation but also for device performance.

Tuning photoinduced intramolecular electron transfer by electron accepting and donating substituents in oxazolones

The solvatochromic and spectral properties of oxazolone derivatives in various solvents were reported. Fluorescence spectra clearly showed positive and negative solvatochromism depending on substituents. The solvatochromic plots and quantum chemical computations at DFT-B3LYP/6-31 + G(d,p) level were used to assess dipole moment changes between the ground and the first excited singlet-states. The electron accepting nitro substituent at the para-position increased the π-electron mobility, however, the 3,5-dinitro substituent decreased the π-electron mobility as a result of inverse accumulation of the electronic density as compared with that of its ground state. Experimental and computational studies proved that the photoinduced intramolecular electron transfer (PIET) is responsible for the observed solvatochromic effects. We demonstrate that PIET can be finely tailored by the position of the electron accepting and donating substituents in the phenyl ring of the oxazolone derivatives. We propose that the photoactive CPO derivatives are new molecular class of conjugated push-pull structures using azlactone moiety as the π-conjugated linker and may find applications in photovoltaic cells and light emitting diodes.
