Abstract
Using Density Functional Theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT), we studied a compound widely used in daily life, namely: Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) monomer in its two stable isomers, cis-MMA and trans-MMA. The impact of conformation on the optical and electronic properties of MMA was highlighted. Structural parameters and thermodynamic properties were also assessed, and allowed to discuss the stability and reactivity of this compound. In addition, analysis of optoelectronic and electronic properties, global reactivity descriptors, natural bond orbital (NBO), and hole and electron reorganization energies was performed. The absorption and fluorescence properties, as well as the linear and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of MMA were also investigated. The findings show that MMA is an insulator due to its wide band gap of 6.20 eV. It also exhibits good optoelectronic properties with high average electric field values of about 5.90 × 109 Vm-1 for cis-MMA and 5.42 × 109 Vm-1 for trans-MMA and high electric displacement values of at least 14.65 × 10-2 cm-2 for cis-MMA and 14.33 × 10-2 cm-2 for trans-MMA, suggesting a potential use for the design of piezoelectric and pyroelectric materials. In addition, trans-MMA has a dielectric constant close to that of good insulators; while cis-MMA exhibits a dielectric behaviour close to that of polymeric substances. Further, these materials are thermodynamically stable in its two conformations, with a good reactivity which can lead to good ability of polymerization. The analysis of the UV-vis spectra revealed that both forms of MMA absorb and emit mainly in the UV and that the Stokes shift of MMA is low, reducing its potential use in devices such as solar cells. At NLO level, MMA isomers exhibit weak optical properties such as second- and third-order optical susceptibility and cannot suitable for second and third harmonic generation; however, the conformation enhances second-order NLO response by at least 2 times when moving from cis- to trans-MMA, whereas the third-order response is almost unaffected. In addition, the conformation also affects the electronic and optoelectronic properties of MMA.

Abstract
In this study, new photonics architectures and aurone-based methacrylic polymers were designed and synthesized for their optical and nonlinear optical properties. The studied polymeric thin films were deposited by spin coating method. SHG and THG effects were measured via Maker fringe technique in transmission mode and determined using theoretical models. Investigations involved the theoretical quantum chemical calculation of dipole moments, frontier molecular orbital HOMO and LUMO energies, and first (β) and second (γ) hyperpolarizabilities. We determined the impact of the substitution in the para position of the phenyl ring and at the dipole moment of the chromophore on the nonlinear optical properties of the investigated polymers. The presented theoretical and experimental studies provide important information with respect to the design of methacrylic-based polymeric thin film devices and supplement existing knowledge with respect to their nonlinear behaviour.

Optical Properties of New Third-Order Nonlinear Materials Modified by Click Chemistry. MOLECULES (BASEL, SWITZERLAND) 2022; 27:molecules27155006. Abstract
A high-yielding click reaction was used to synthesize a series of highly conjugated, symmetrical, as well as asymmetrical compounds with a benzene core. Cyclic voltammetry and ultraviolet/visible absorption spectroscopy were carried out, and proved that the side groups of the benzene derivatives played an important role in the energy gaps, and affected the third-order non-linear optical response. The maximum absorption wavelength of the series of benzene derivatives showed an obvious red-shift. Moreover, the addition of resilient electron-withdrawing groups significantly narrowed the energy levels as compared with precursors. The third-order nonlinear properties of this benzene derivative were tested by the Z-scan technique. The expected properties of this series of molecules were obtained, and it was found that the series of molecules undergoes a transition from reverse saturable absorption to saturable absorption, which has certain reference significance for a nonlinear optical field.

Multifunctional Dy III Enantiomeric Pairs Showing Enhanced Photoluminescences and Third-Harmonic Generation Responses through the Coordination Role of Homochiral Tridentate N,N,N-Pincer Ligands. Abstract
By utilizing Dy(hfac)3(H2O)2 to react with enantiomerically pure tridentate N,N,N-pincer ligands, namely (-)/(+)-2,6-bis(4',5'-pinene-2'-pyridyl)pyridine (LR and LS), respectively, homochiral DyIII enantiomeric pairs formulated as Dy(hfac)3LR/Dy(hfac)3LS (R-1/S-1) (hfac- = hexafluoroacetylacetonate) were achieved and structurally characterized. Meanwhile, their magnetic, photoluminescent (PL), and chiroptical properties were probed. The PL test results indicate that the precursor Dy(hfac)3(H2O)2 only shows very weak emission, while R-1 exhibits characteristic DyIII f-f transition emission bands at room temperature. Furthermore, the nonlinear optical responses of Dy(hfac)3(H2O)2, LR/LS, and R-1/S-1 were investigated in detail based on crystalline samples. The results reveal that LR and LS present the coexistence of second- and third-harmonic generation (SHG and THG) responses with more intense signals for SHG responses; and Dy(hfac)3(H2O)2 merely displays weak THG responses, while R-1 and S-1 also only exhibit THG responses. However, the THG intensities of R-1 and S-1 are more than six times larger than that of Dy(hfac)3(H2O)2 under the identical measurement conditions. These results demonstrate that introducing homochiral N,N,N-pincer ligands to replace two H2O molecules of Dy(hfac)3(H2O)2 results in significant improvements of both PL performances and THG responses of resultant R-1/S-1 enantiomers. R-1 and S-1 integrate PL, THG, and chiral optical activity in one molecule, suggesting their multifunctional merits. In particular, a convenient method is introduced to simultaneously test THG and SHG responses of molecular materials based on crystalline samples in this work.

Abstract
While single wavelength all-optical information encoding through optically induced orientation of azobenzene dyes is being extensively pursued, we propose multi-wavelength optical data processing and recording based on disperse red 1 (DR1) and 4-(4-hydroxybutyloxy) azobenzene doped organic-inorganic hybrid films to increase the density of recording data. By investigating the change of absorbance spectrum of the doped film under different irradiations, results indicate a laser pulses around 470 nm would be suitable as the probe beam. In the measurement of optical data processing and recording, two cw lasers pulse at 532 nm and 355 nm induce trans-cis isomerization of the azo-dyes in the film, while the output of the probe beam record the processed data as {(-1), (0), (1)} according to different inputs of the pump beams. Since the light induced isomerization has a sensitive response in the as-prepared solid organic-inorganic matrix system, the films is promising as recording and monitoring element in all-optical devices over a wide range of repetition rates.

Liu Z, Yan X, Li L, Wu G. Modulation of the optical properties of D-π-A type azobenzene derivatives by changing the π-conjugated backbones: A theoretical study. Abstract
The optical properties of two series of azobenzene derivatives were modulated by backbone modifications with the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Compared to the short-chain molecule, the chromophore with an elongated π-bridge exhibits a greater extent of charge transfer during one-photon excitation and hence possesses a larger molecular first hyperpolarizability (β0). Meanwhile, an evident red-shift in the maximum absorption was observed after extension of the π-conjugated backbone. The tendency of the static β0 value derived from the two-state model is consistent with the result of the calculation at M06-2X/6–311++G(d,p) level by means of analytical derivative method. The dynamic perturbations were revealed to cause the obvious enhancement of the first hyperpolarizability. The more closer the foundational wavelength to two times the value of the maximum absorption in one-photon transition, the larger βRHS value is observed for the chromophore. The nonlinear optical (NLO) properties augment with the introduction of the THF solvents by comparing the gas-phase values. With increasing the length of conjugated bridge, the dynamic βRHS value increases more rapidly in THF solution than in vacuum.

Third-Order Nonlinear Optical Behavior of Novel Polythiophene Derivatives Functionalized with Disperse Red 19 Chromophore. INT J POLYM SCI 2015. Abstract
Two copolymers of 3-alkylthiophene (alkyl = hexyl, octyl) and a thiophene functionalized with disperse red 19 (TDR19) as chromophore side chain were synthesized by oxidative polymerization. The synthetic procedure was easy to perform, cost-effective, and highly versatile. The molecular structure, molecular weight distribution, film morphology, and optical and thermal properties of these polythiophene derivatives were determined by NMR, FT-IR, UV-Vis GPC, DSC-TGA, and AFM. The third-order nonlinear optical response of these materials was performed with nanosecond and femtosecond laser pulses by using the third-harmonic generation (THG) andZ-scan techniques at infrared wavelengths of 1300 and 800 nm, respectively. From these experiments it was observed that although the TRD19 incorporation into the side chain of the copolymers was lower than 5%, it was sufficient to increase their nonlinear response in solid state. For instance, the third-order nonlinear electric susceptibility (χ3) of solid thin films made of these copolymers exhibited an increment of nearly 60% when TDR19 incorporation increased from 3% to 5%. In solution, the copolymers exhibited similar two-photon absorption cross sectionsσ2PAwith a maximum value of 8545 GM and 233 GM (1 GM = 10−50 cm4 s) per repeated monomeric unit.

Abstract
A series of asymmetric triphenylene derivatives containing typical D-π-A structures is successfully synthesized by means of [2+2] cycloaddition-cycloreversion click reactions. The photophysical and electrochemical properties, as well as the click reactions, are characterized by means of UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and DFT modulations. In addition, the third-order nonlinear properties, including the nonlinear absorption and the nonlinear susceptibilities, are investigated by using Z-scan techniques. A typical reverse saturable absorption-saturable absorption behavior is observed for the third-order nonlinear absorption, with the third-order nonlinear susceptibilities of the compounds being 1.05×10(-12) , -1.50×10(-12) , and -0.52×10(-12) esu, respectively.
