Impact of Ionic Liquid-Modified Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes on the Crystallization Behavior of Poly(vinylidene fluoride)

A Binary Ionogel Electrolyte for the Realization of an All Solid-State Electrical Double-Layer Capacitor Performing at Low Temperature

Over the last years, solid-state electrolytes made of an ionic liquid (IL) confined in a solid (inorganic or polymer) matrix, also known as ionogels, have been proposed to solve the leakage problems occurring at high temperatures in classical electrical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) with an organic electrolyte, and thereof improve the safety. However, making ionogel-based EDLCs perform with reasonable power at low temperature is still a major challenge due to the high melting point of the confined IL. To overcome these limitations, the present contribution discloses ionogel films prepared in a totally oxygen/moisture-free atmosphere by encapsulating 70 wt % of an equimolar mixture of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate - [EMIm][BF4]0.5[FSI]0.5 - into a poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVdF-HFP) network. The further called "binary ionogel" films demonstrated a high flexibility and a good ionic conductivity of 5.8 mS cm-1 at 20 °C. Contrary to the ionogels prepared from either [EMIm][FSI] or [EMIm][BF4], displaying melting at Tm=-16 °C and -7 °C, respectively, the crystallization of confined [EMIm][BF4]0.5[FSI]0.5 is quenched in the binary ionogel, which shows only a glass transition at -101 °C. This quenching enables an increased ionicity and ionic diffusion at the interface with the PVdF host network, leading the binary ionogel membrane to display higher ionic conductivity below -20 °C than the parent binary [EMIm][BF4]0.5[FSI]0.5 liquid. Laminate EDLCs were built with a 100 μm thick binary ionogel separator and electrodes made from a hierarchical micro-/mesoporous MgO-templated carbon containing a reasonable proportion of mesopores to enhance the mass transport of ions, especially at low temperature where the ionic diffusion noticeably decreases. The EDLCs operated up to 3.0 V with ideal EDL characteristics from -40 °C to room temperature. Their output specific energy under a discharge power of 1 kW kg-1 is ca. 4 times larger than with a cell implementing the same carbon electrodes together with the binary [EMIm][BF4]0.5[FSI]0.5 liquid. Hence, this binary ionogel electrolyte concept paves the road for developing safe and flexible solid-state energy storage devices operating at subambient temperatures in extreme environments.

Effect of Zn-Fe2O3 nanomaterials on the phase separated morphologies of polyvinylidene fluoride piezoelectric nanogenerators

Self-powered devices based on piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs) are becoming crucial in the upcoming smart societies as they can integrate multifunctional applications, especially sensing, energy storage, etc. In this work, we explore the piezoelectric voltage generation happening in polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanocomposites developed by phase separation. The simple method adopted for the nanocomposite synthesis rules out the high voltage required for the normal electrospun PENGs and adds to their cost-effectiveness. Zinc-doped iron oxide (Zn-Fe2O3) nanomaterials influence the piezoelectric properties by enhancing the crystallinity and structural properties of the polymer. The phase separation process causes structural rearrangements within the PVDF by inducing the directional alignment of -CH2- and -CF2-chains and is the major reason for electroactive phase enhancement. Layers of Zn-Fe2O3 were uniformly distributed in the phase-separated PVDF without being negatively influenced by the solvent-non-solvent interactions during phase separation. At 3 wt%, the Zn-Fe2O3 induced an open circuit voltage of 0.41 volts, about 12 times greater than that of the neat PVDF film. Nanoparticles affected the thermal degradation and crystallinity of the polymer composites most effectively, and the dielectric properties of the PVDF/Zn-Fe2O3 composite microfilms were also pronounced. The proposed simple and cost-effective approach to flexible microfilm fabrication suggests significant applications in wearable electronics.

Engineered and Durable Antimicrobial Polymer via Controllable Immobilization of Ionic Liquids onto the Poly(lactic acid) Chains

Nowadays, the development of effective modification methods for PLA has gained significant interest because of the wide application of antimicrobial PLA materials in the medical progress. Herein, the ionic liquid (IL) 1-vinyl-3-butylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, has been grafted onto the PLA chains successfully in the PLA/IL blending films via electron beam (EB) radiation for the miscibility between PLA and IL. It was found that the existence of IL in the PLA matrix can significantly improve the chemical stability under EB radiation. The Mn of PLA-g-IL copolymer did not change obviously but was just decreased from 6.80 × 104 g/mol to 5.20 × 104 g/mol after radiation with 10 kGy. The obtained PLA-g-IL copolymers showed excellent filament forming property during electrospinning process. The spindle structure on the nanofibers can be completely eliminated after feeding only 0.5 wt % ILs for the improvement of ionic conductivity. Specially, the prepared PLA-g-IL nonwovens exhibited outstanding and durable antimicrobial activity for the enrichment of immobilized ILs on the nanofiber surface. This work provides a feasible strategy to realize the modification of functional ILs onto PLA chains with low EB radiation doses, which may have huge potential application in the medical and packaging industry.

Fighting bacterial pathogens with carbon nanotubes: focused review of recent progress

The fast and global spread of bacterial resistance to currently available antibiotics results in a great and urgent need for alternative antibacterial agents and therapeutic strategies. Recent studies on the application of nanomaterials as antimicrobial agents have demonstrated their potential for the management of infectious diseases. Among the diverse palette of nanomaterials currently used in biomedical applications, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have gained massive interest given their many valuable properties, such as high thermal and electrical conductivity, tensile strength, flexibility convenient aspect ratio, and low fabrication costs. All these features are augmented by facile conjugation with functional groups. CNTs are currently available in many configurations, with two main categories being single-walled and multi-walled CNTs, depending on the number of rolled-up single-layer carbon atoms sheets making up the nanostructure. Both classes have been identified over the past years as promising antibacterial agents but the current level of understanding of their efficiency still harbors many pending questions. This mini-review surveys recent progress on the topic of antibacterial effects of CNTs and examines the proposed mechanisms of action(s) of different CNT typologies, placing the main focus on past studies addressing the antibacterial activity on Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, two prototypical Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens, respectively.

Ionic Liquids as Alternative Curing Agents for Conductive Epoxy/CNT Nanocomposites with Improved Adhesive Properties

Good dispersion of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) together with effective curing were obtained in epoxy/CNT nanocomposites (NCs) using three different ionic liquids (ILs). Compared to conventional amine-cured epoxy systems, lower electrical percolation thresholds were obtained in some of the IL-based epoxy systems. For example, the percolation threshold of the trihexyltetradecylphosphonium dicyanamide (IL-P-DCA)-based system was 0.001 wt.%. The addition of CNTs was not found to have any significant effect on the thermal or low-strain mechanical properties of the nanocomposites, but it did improve their adhesive properties considerably compared to the unfilled systems. This study demonstrates that ILs can be used to successfully replace traditional amine-based curing agents for the production of electrically conductive epoxy/CNT NCs and adhesives, as a similar or better balance of properties was achieved. This represents a step towards greater sustainability given that the vapor pressure of ILs is low, and the amount needed to effectively cure epoxy resins is significantly lower than any of their counterparts.

Room-Temperature Pseudo-Solid-State Iron Fluoride Conversion Battery with High Ionic Conductivity

Li-metal batteries (LMBs) employing conversion cathode materials (e.g., FeF₃) are a promising way to prepare inexpensive, environmentally friendly batteries with high energy density. Pseudo-solid-state ionogel separators harness the energy density and safety advantages of solid-state LMBs, while alleviating key drawbacks (e.g., poor ionic conductivity and high interfacial resistance). In this work, a pseudo-solid-state conversion battery (Li-FeF₃) is presented that achieves stable, high rate (1.0 mA cm^-2) cycling at room temperature. The batteries described herein contain gel-infiltrated FeF₃ cathodes prepared by exchanging the ionic liquid in a polymer ionogel with a localized high-concentration electrolyte (LHCE). The LHCE gel merges the benefits of a flexible separator (e.g., adaptation to conversion-related volume changes) with the excellent chemical stability and high ionic conductivity (∼2 mS cm^-1 at 25 °C) of an LHCE. The latter property is in contrast to previous solid-state iron fluoride batteries, where poor ionic conductivities necessitated elevated temperatures to realize practical power levels. The stable, room-temperature Li-FeF₃ cycling performance obtained with the LHCE gel at high current densities paves the way for exploring a range of architectures including flexible, three-dimensional, and custom shape batteries.

Imidazolium Salt for Enhanced Interfacial Shear Strength in Polyphenylene Sulfide/Ex-PAN Carbon Fiber Composites

Processing structural or semi-structural thermoplastic-based composites is a promising solution to solve the environmental issues of the aeronautic industry. However, these composites must withstand high standard specification to ensure safety during transportation. For this reason, there is a real need to develop strong interactions between thermoplastic polymers and reinforcement fibers. This paper investigates relationships between the surface chemistry, microstructure and micromechanical properties between polyphenylene sulfide and ex-PAN carbon fibers. The incorporation of ionic salt such as 1,3-Bis(4-carboxyphenyl)imidazolium chloride into neat polyphenylene sulfide was able to significantly increase the interfacial shear strength measured by microbond micromechanical test combined with different carbon fiber surfaces treatment.

Pressure-Dependent Clustering in Ionic-Liquid-Poly (Vinylidene Fluoride) Mixtures: An Infrared Spectroscopic Study

The nanostructures of ionic liquids (ILs) have been the focus of considerable research attention in recent years. Nevertheless, the nanoscale structures of ILs in the presence of polymers have not been described in detail at present. In this study, nanostructures of ILs disturbed by poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVdF) were investigated via high-pressure infrared spectra. For 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([HEMIm][TFSI])-PVdF mixtures, non-monotonic frequency shifts of the C^4,5-H vibrations upon dilution were observed under ambient pressure. The experimental results suggest the presence of microheterogeneity in the [HEMIm][TFSI] systems. Upon compression, PVdF further influenced the local structure of C^4,5–H via pressure-enhanced IL–PVdF interactions; however, the local structures of C²–H and hydrogen-bonded O–H were not affected by PVdF under high pressures. For choline [TFSI]–PVdF mixtures, PVdF may disturb the local structures of hydrogen-bonded O–H. In the absence of the C^4,5–H⋯anion and C²–H⋯anion in choline [TFSI]–PVdF mixtures, the O–H group becomes a favorable moiety for pressure-enhanced IL–PVdF interactions. Our results indicate the potential of high-pressure application for designing pressure-dependent electronic switches based on the possible changes in the microheterogeneity and electrical conductivity in IL-PVdF systems under various pressures.

Humidity Sustainable Hydrophobic Poly(vinylidene fluoride)-Carbon Nanotubes Foam Based Piezoelectric Nanogenerator

Light weight lead free, polymer, and carbon nanotubes based flexible piezoelectric nanogenerators have prompted widespread concern for harvesting mechanical energy and powering next generation electronics devices. Herein, lightweight polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-carbon nanotube (CNT) foam was prepared to fabricate humid resistant hydrophobic flexible piezoelectric nanogenerator to converts mechanical energy into electricity for the first time. Hydrophobic piezoelectric PVDF-CNT foam with density of 0.15 g/cm³ was prepared by solution route. PVDF-CNT foam exhibited crystalline and a well-defined chain likes structure with 65% fraction of β-phase. Self-poled PVDF-CNT foam shows piezoelectric charge coefficient (d₃₃) of 9.4 pC/N. High d₃₃ of PVDF-CNT foam is caused by dipole alignment induced by local electric field of CNT in the microcellular structure of PVDF. The developed foam exhibits ultrahigh dielectric constant (ε') ∼ 3048 at 150 Hz. Flexible piezoelectric PVDF-CNT foam based nanogenerator was fabricated, which generates high output voltage ∼12 V and current density of 30 nA/cm² at small compressive pressure of 0.02 kgf. Piezoelectric output performance was measured under different humid condition and an output voltage up to 8 V was achieved even under 60% RH condition. PVDF-CNT foam exhibited hydrophobic behavior and high surface water contact angle of 139°. Such high output voltage even under small pressure, without applying electrical poling and under humid condition was originated though CNT induced self-alignment of electric dipoles in PVDF polymer. These excellent performances of developed foam based device confirmed its potential application in organic based ultrasensitive self-powered nanosensors and nanosystems.

A Succinct Review on the PVDF/Imidazolium-Based Ionic Liquid Blends and Composites: Preparations, Properties, and Applications

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) is a versatile thermoplastic fluoropolymer with intriguing characteristics, which is receiving considerable attention from researchers in many areas. Recently, PVDF and its copolymer, such as poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) have been blended with ionic liquids to produce blend and composite materials for target applications. In this succinct review, two types of ionic liquids that are utilized for the preparation of PVDF and PVDF-HFP blends and composites, namely, hydrophilic and hydrophobic imidazolium-based ionic liquids, are reviewed. In addition, the effect of the ionic liquids on the physicochemical properties of the PVDF and PVDF-HFP blends and composites, is described as well. On top of that, a multitude of applications of the blends and composites are also succinctly reviewed. This review may give inspirations to the polymer blend and composite researchers in diversifying the applications of thermoplastic fluoropolymers through the utilization of ionic liquids.

Cation-π Interactions in Graphene-Containing Systems for Water Treatment and Beyond

Cation-π interactions are common in nature, especially in organisms. Their profound influences in chemistry, physics, and biology have been continuously investigated since they were discovered in 1981. However, the importance of cation-π interactions in materials science, regarding carbonaceous nanomaterials, has just been realized. The interplay between cations and delocalized polarizable π electrons of graphene would bring about significant changes to the intrinsic characteristics of graphene and greatly affect the device performance based on graphene and its derivatives. Here, the cation-π interactions in graphene containing systems for water treatment applications (e.g., separation membranes, adsorbents) are highlighted. The cross-linking effects caused by cation-π interactions contribute to membrane stability and selectivity and enhanced adsorption. Their roles in dominating the performance of graphene-based structures for other specific applications are also discussed. Relevant theoretical modeling and calculations are summarized to offer an in-depth understanding of the underlying mechanisms which can help in designing more functional materials and structures. Perspectives on the potential directions that deserve effort are also presented.

Ionic Liquid-Functionalized Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube-Based Hydrophobic Coatings for Robust Antibacterial Applications

In recent years, the biomimetic superhydrophobic coatings have received tremendous attention, owing to their potential in fabricating self-cleaning surfaces, in environmental applications. Consequently, extensive research has been devoted to create a superhydrophobic surface using the oxidized derivatives of CNTs and graphene. Thus, the design and development of a self-cleaning/superhydrophobic surface with good biocompatibility are an effective approach to deal with the bacterial infections related to biomedical devices used in hospitals. In this context, herein, we have developed the material based on ionic liquid (IL)-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) for hydrophobic coatings, which was fully characterized with various techniques such as Fourier transform infrared, powder X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. We have evaluated the synthesized ILs for their antibacterial potential against the pathogenic bacterial strains such as Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin-resistant S. aureus) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacterial strains. Further, atomic force and scanning electron microscopic studies have been performed to investigate the morphological changes to unravel the mechanism of action, whereas DNA binding study indicates the binding of IL-1d@MWCNT with DNA (K_a = 2.390 × 10⁴ M^-1). Furthermore, the developed material (IL-1d@MWCNT) is coated onto the surface of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and evaluated for hydrophobicity through water contact angle measurements and possesses long-term antibacterial efficiency against both under-investigating pathogenic strains. For the biocompatibility assay, the obtained coated PVC material has also been evaluated for its cytotoxicity, and results reveal no toxicity against viable cells. These all results are taken together, indicating that by coating with the developed material IL-1d@MWCNT, a robust self-sterilizing surface has achieved, which helps in maintaining a bacteria-free surface.

Using Annealing Treatment on Fabrication Ionic Liquid-Based PVDF Films

In this study, a simple method to obtain pure β-phase directly from the melt process is proposed. A series of PVDF and ionic liquid (IL) was prepared by a solvent casting method with appropriate associated with the subsequent annealing treatment. IL plays a role of filler, which can create strong electrostatic interaction with PVDF matrix and directly induce β-phase crystallization on the PVDF during the melt. PVDF film sample is immersed in hot water for annealing treatment at different temperatures (25 °C to 70 °C). We found that annealing in high temperatures especially can not only increase more IL inserted into the amorphous region of polymer matrix to make more phase transformation, but also accelerate IL removal. Characteristics and performance of the PVDF films were investigated by use of FTIR, XRD, SEM, and AFM. Piezoelectric coefficient d33 as well as d31, degree of crystallinity, and sensitivity are measured in experiment to verify the performance of PVDF film.

Polar crystalline phases of PVDF induced by interaction with functionalized boron nitride nanosheets

The PVDF/OH-BNNS nanocomposites mainly form a non-polar phase, while polar crystalline phases are the majority in the PVDF/NH₂-BNNS nanocomposites.

Multiple-Step Melting/Irradiation: A Strategy to Fabricate Thermoplastic Polymers with Improved Mechanical Performance

To fabricate thermoplastic polymers exhibiting improved ductility without the loss of strength, a novel multiple-step melting/irradiation (MUSMI) strategy was developed by taking poly(vinylidene fluoride)/triallyl isocyanate (PVDF/TAIC) as an example, in which alternate melting and irradiation were adopted and repeated for several times. The initial irradiation with a low dose produced some local crosslinked points (not 3-dimensional network). When the specimen was reheated above the melting temperature, they redistributed in the PVDF matrix, which is an efficient way to avoid the high crosslinking density at certain positions and the disappearance of thermoplastic properties. During the subsequent cooling process, the crosslinked domains in the thermoplastic polymer matrix is expected to play double roles in turning crystal structures for enhancing the ductility without reducing strength. On one hand, they can act as heterogeneous nucleation agents, resulting in higher nucleation density and smaller spherulites; on the other hand, the existence of crosslinked structures restricts the lamellar thickening, accounting for the thinner crystal lamellae. Both smaller spherulites and thinner lamellae contribute to better ductility. At the same time, these local crosslinked points enhance the connectivity of crystal structures (including lamellae and spherulites), which is beneficial to the improvement of strength. Based on the influence of local crosslinked points on the ductility and strength, thermoplastic PVDF with much higher elongation at break and comparable yielding stress (relative to the reference specimen upon strong irradiation only once) was prepared via MUSMI successfully.

Nuomici-Inspired Universal Strategy for Boosting Piezoresistive Sensitivity and Elasticity of Polymer Nanocomposite-Based Strain Sensors

Electrically conductive polymer composites (CPCs) are potential alternatives to conventional strain gauges due to their tunable sensitivity and strain ranges. Currently, to achieve very high piezoresistive sensitivity in thermoplastic-based CPCs with Gauge factors G_F above 20 at low tensile strains (ε ≤ 5%) is a big challenge, but critical for structural health monitoring application in infrastructures. Here, inspired by the unique structures of a famous Chinese food, nuomici, we coat carbon nanotubes (CNTs) onto sticky acrylic rubber (AR) granules (ARG) to form nuomici-like CNT@ARG composite granules, which are employed as unique conductive filler to fabricate highly piezoresistive and flexible CPCs based on poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF). This strategy of localizing CNTs densely on the surface of touching rubbery particles resulted in a much more sensitive elastic conductive network built by the CNT@AR composite and showed a big gain effect. The resultant PVDF/CNT@AR nanocomposites (AR content ranging from 0 to 10 wt %) show extremely high piezoresistive sensitivity at low strain, depending on the AR content. In particular, the G_F value of PVDF with 1.5 wt % CNT@10 wt % AR is 41 at 5% strain, which is more than one magnitude higher than that (ca. 3) of traditional PVDF/CNT nanocomposite sensors. Moreover, the elongation at break increases by about 60% with the addition of 1.5 wt CNT@10 wt % AR. This study introduces a universal effective strategy for tailoring the mechanical properties and strain sensitivity of conductive network in CPCs, which is critical for the fabrication of high-performance strain sensors.

The Role of Fluorinated IL as an Interfacial Agent in P(VDF-CTFE)/Graphene Composite Films

The incorporation of graphene into a polymer matrix can endow composites with extended functions. However, it is difficult to well disperse pristine graphene into a polymer matrix in order to obtain polymer nanocomposites due to the lack of functional groups on the surface for bonding with a polymer matrix. Herein, we investigated the role of fluorinated ionic liquid (IL) as a new interfacial agent in poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-chlorotrifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-CTFE))/graphene composite films. First, a task-specific IL, perfluorooctyltriphenylphosphonium iodide (IL-C8F13), was synthesized and adsorbed on the surface of graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) for making functional nanofillers which were capable of being incorporated into the P(VDF-CTFE) matrix. The cation structure of IL combined three phenyls (potential π–π interactions with graphene) and a short fluorinated chain (enhanced miscibility with fluorinated matrix via dipolar interactions) to make a compatible graphene filler and P(VDF-CTFE) matrix at the interface among them. Second, two series of P(VDF-CTFE)/GO-IL and P(VDF-CTFE)/rGO-IL composites with different loading contents were prepared with the goal of providing an understanding of the mechanism of interfacial interactions. This paper investigated the difference in the interaction model between GO with IL and rGO with IL. Subsequently, the interfacial effect of IL on the properties of P(VDF-CTFE)/graphene composites, such as crystallization, chain segmental relaxation behavior, dispersion, and the final dielectric properties will be further studied.

PVDF based ionogels: applications towards electrochemical devices and membrane separation processes

Ionogels have emerged as one of the most interesting and captivating form of composites which credits to the outstanding characteristics. One of the most important constituent of ionogels is ionic liquid, which show many attractive properties notably non-volatility, in-flammability, negligible vapor pressure, tunability, thermal stability and solvating ability. A large variety of matrix materials have been under consideration for ionogels, presently, polymer/ionic liquid based ionogels have attracted much attention. Numerous polymeric materials such as have been utilized for these polymer/ionic liquids based ionogels. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) has been on top of the line as a matrix material for polymer based ionogels owing to its stability, aging and chemical resistance and mechanical strength. This review is primarily concerned with the properties of polyvinylidene fluoride based ionogels with an emphasis on their applications in various domains electrochemical devices, gas separation and liquid/liquid separations.

PVDF-MWNT interactions control process induced β-lamellar morphology and orientation in the nanocomposites

The effect of methylene blue (MB) modified multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) on the nucleation and morphology of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) in comparison with the effect of MWNTs was systematically assessed by DSC, 13C NMR, FT-IR, TEM, WAXS and SAXS analysis. TEM analysis of ultra-microtomed samples revealed that MB modification enhanced the dispersibility of MWNTs in PVDF. Further, the nanocomposites were subjected to mechanical rolling and the synergistic effect of processing and fillers on the PVDF morphology (before and after rolling) at different length scales was studied. Both FT-IR and WAXS analyses suggested that mechanical rolling transforms α-PVDF to β-PVDF (ca. 88%). TEM and two-dimensional WAXS analyses revealed that the MWNTs and β-crystallites are oriented preferentially along the rolling direction and the degree of orientation is not influenced by the fillers suggesting that crystallite orientation is fully controlled by mechanical rolling. On the other hand, β-lamellae showed perpendicular orientation with respect to the rolling direction. Unlike β-crystallites, the β-lamellar morphology and orientation are highly governed by the fillers as evident from SAXS analysis. Using MWNTs and the MWNT-MB π-complex, we demonstrate that the β-lamellar morphology and degree of orientation are controlled by the extent of interaction of fillers with PVDF. Interestingly, both β-lamellar morphology and degree of orientation correlate well with the mechanical properties of the rolled PVDF. More specifically, the dynamic storage modulus of the samples in the rolling direction increases with increasing β-lamellar morphology and degree of orientation. The present work demonstrates that the polymer-filler interaction plays a crucial role in regulating the processed polymer morphology and can be tuned by appropriately modifying the surface of fillers through either covalent or non-covalent interactions.

In-depth understanding of interfacial crystallization via Flash DSC and enhanced energy storage density in ferroelectric P(VDF-CTFE)/Au NRs nanocomposites for capacitor application

High-capacity or high-power-density capacitors are being actively investigated for portable electronics, electric vehicles, and electric power systems. We describe the filler system in dielectric nanocomposites with a small loading of Au nanorods [NRs] to elucidate the mechanism of interfacial crystallization behavior including the crystallization kinetics, and crystalline morphology and structure, and to investigate the intrinsic causes for concurrent great improvements in the dielectric constant and energy density in the nanocomposite system. Remarkly, at high crystallization temperature, the addition of Au NRs, which are used as heterogeneous nucleators, can reduce the nucleation barrier, resulting in accelerating the crystallization rate. However, the crystallization rate slows down at low temperatures because the addition of Au NRs limited the mobility of poly(vinylidene fluoride-chlorotrifluoroethylene) [P(VDF-CTFE)] chains, and thus enhanced the diffusion barrier. Furthermore, the addition of NRs has a huge impact on the crystalline morphology and structure which changes from large paraelectric α-phase spherulites with TGTG' conformations into minor ferroelectric γ-phase spherulites with T3GT3G' conformations, and also produces more exogenous interfaces between the lamellar crystals and amorphous regions, resulting in a higher dielectric constant and higher electric energy density in P(VDF-CTFE)/Au NRs nanocomposites. Our approach provides a facile and straightforward way to design or understand PVDF-based polymers for their practical applications in high-energy-density capacitors.

Spontaneous polarization switching and piezoelectric enhancement of PVDF through strong hydrogen bonds induced by layered double hydroxides

The spontaneous dipole alignment of PVDF has been achieved in the formation process of a film through strong hydrogen bonds between PVDF and layered double hydroxides (LDHs), and the as-prepared composite film exhibits excellent energy conversion and storage ability.

Properties and Applications of the β Phase Poly(vinylidene fluoride)

Poly(vinylidene fluoride), PVDF, as one of important polymeric materials with extensively scientific interests and technological applications, shows five crystalline polymorphs with α, β, γ, δ and ε phases obtained by different processing methods. Among them, β phase PVDF presents outstanding electrical characteristics including piezo-, pyro-and ferroelectric properties. These electroactive properties are increasingly important in applications such as energy storage, spin valve devices, biomedicine, sensors and smart scaffolds. This article discusses the basic knowledge and character methods for PVDF fabrication and provides an overview of recent advances on the phase modification and recent applications of the β phase PVDF are reported. This study may provide an insight for the development and utilization for β phase PVDF nanofilms in future electronics.

Influence of lithium salt-induced phase separation on thermal behaviors of poly(vinylidene fluoride)/ionic liquid gels and pore/void formation by competition with crystallization

The thermal behavior of poly(vinylidene fluoride)/1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide/lithium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide (PVDF/[C₂mim][TFSA]/LiTFSA) gels, prepared by cooling from the hot solution, was investigated with various concentrations of LiTFSA (C_LiTFSA). The peak melting temperature (T_m) of the gels shifted toward higher temperatures with increased C_LiTFSA. However, the thickness of lamellar crystal was found to decrease with the increase in C_LiTFSA, which meant that the increase in T_m was not caused by the thickening of lamellar crystal. Furthermore, we found the appearance of domains above T_m in the high C_LiTFSA region (≥20 wt%), which was a lithium ion-rich phase caused by the phase separation. Therefore, it is considered on the basis of Nishi–Wang equation that an increase in the interaction parameter with increasing C_LiTFSA toward the phase separation increased the T_m. The phase-separated domains competed with the subsequent crystallization, which resulted in the formation of micrometer-sized pores and nanometer-sized voids in the spherulites. Spectral measurements revealed that PVDF was not specifically solvated in the solution state above the crystallization temperature, while [TFSA]⁻ anion formed a complex with lithium ion irrespective of the PVDF content. These results led to the consideration that an increase in the interaction parameter might be caused by the strong interaction between lithium ion and [TFSA]⁻ anion to form the complex, which would also lower the interaction between PVDF and [TFSA]⁻ anion.

Towards Flexible Dielectric Materials with High Dielectric Constant and Low Loss: PVDF Nanocomposites with both Homogenously Dispersed CNTs and Ionic Liquids Nanodomains

Flexible dielectric materials with high dielectric constant and low loss have attracted significant attention. In this work, we fabricated novel polymer-based nanocomposites with both homogeneously dispersed conductive nanofillers and ion-conductive nanodomains within a polymer matrix. An unsaturated ionic liquid (IL), 1-vinyl-3-ethylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([VEIM][BF₄]), was first coated on the surface of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by the mechanical grinding. The ILs coated CNTs were then well dispersed in poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) matrix by melt-blending. The ILs on the surface of CNTs were subsequently grafted onto the PVDF chains by electron beam irradiation (EBI). The formed ILs grafted PVDF (PVDF-g-IL) finally aggregated into ionic nanodomains with the size of 20–30 nm in the melt state. Therefore, novel PVDF nanocomposites with both homogenously dispersed CNTs and ionic nanodomains were achieved. Both carbon nanotubes and ionic nanodomains contributed to the enhancement of the dielectric constant of PVDF significantly. At the same time, such homogeneously dispersed CNTs along with the confined ions in the nandomains decreased current leakage effectively and thus led to the low dielectric loss. The final PVDF nanocomposites exhibited high dielectric constant, low dielectric loss and good flexibility, which may be promising for applications in soft/flexible devices.
