Abstract
The 1,4-dithiin motif is known for its reversible redox properties to generate radical cations and diradical dications and thus is interesting for organic electronic applications. However, examples where this motif is embedded into chiral larger fused aromatic compounds are very rare. Here we describe the syntheses of several structurally related pyrene fused dithiins and their spectroscopic investigations with a focus on tuning circular dichroism, with respect to the g values, depending on their connectivity.

Abstract
Helicenes are promising candidates for circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials, although the performance is poor due to the unsatisfactory dissymmetric factor (glum) and fluorescence quantum efficiency (ΦF). Herein, the influence of heteroatoms (C, Si, Ge, O, S and Se) on the electronic structures and chiroptical properties of [7]helicene derivatives is systematically investigated using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations combined with the thermal vibration correlation function theory. The results reveal that the non-radiative energy consumption processes for helicene systems are closely related to the variation of bond length upon electronic excitation. Moreover, by introducing five-membered rings and heteroatoms, the dipole-forbidden S1 → S0 emission of [7]helicene changes to dipole-allowed transition due to the rearrangement of occupied orbitals and lifting of the nearly degenerate orbitals, resulting in an enhancement of ΦF. As the heteroatomic radius increases, ΦF decreases while the glum increases. Compared with the derivatives containing aromatic five-membered rings ([7]H-O, [7]H-S, and [7]H-Se), the non-aromatic counterparts ([7]H-C, [7]H-Si, and [7]H-Ge) exhibit a balance in ΦF and glum values. The present study helps to clarify the relationship between structures and chiroptical properties and offers a feasible strategy for the future design of helicene-based CPL materials.

Abstract
In this article, effects of di-, tetra-, and octafluorination on the structural and chiroptical properties of carbo[5-8]helicenes are reported. Three fluorinated derivatives are designed from each parent carbohelicene by substituting either one, two, or four hydrogens at each terminal ring with fluorine atoms. Excited states properties such as UV-vis and CD spectra of all the six fluorinated carbohelicenes are computed at the ADC(2)/def2-TZVP level, and the results are compared against the results of their respective parent carbohelicene. In addition, CPL properties are also computed at the same level of theory. In the case of carbo[5]helicene (5H), gCPL decreases with an increase in the degree of fluorination. A similar observation is made in carbo[6]helicene (6H) too, although the value for tetrafluorinated 6H is slightly larger than for difluorinated 6H. Di- and tetrafluorination in carbo[7]helicene (7H), and all types of considered fluorination in carbo[8]helicene (8H) produce improved gCPL results. Results for fluorescence rate constants are also shown. Results are analyzed in terms of the transition dipole moment vectors and the angles between those.

Abstract
The unique formation of an infinity-shaped carbon backbone made exclusively from fused benzene rings has recently been achieved. The structure of [12]infinitene can be viewed as two fused [6]helicene structures with a central crossover section, depicting a global aromatic behavior along with the overall structure, with deshielding regions along both helicoidal axes. In addition, the 13C-NMR characteristics are discussed. The formation of a cumulative region involving the shielding regions from the aromatic rings is depicted along with the overall aesthetically pleasant structural backbone, which is enhanced at the crossover section. For the evaluated dianionic counterpart, the structure shows a deshielding region above the fused-ring trail and a helicoidal shielding region, ascribed to a global antiaromatic counterpart. The aromaticity is recovered and enhanced at the tetranionic state. Thus, the neutral and tetranionic states are able to build up a long-ranged shielding region, given by the global aromatic behavior, with an enhanced shielding region at the center of the crossover section displaying π-π stacked rings.

Abstract
We demonstrate that contemporary computational resources allow for accurate theoretical studies of systems matching recent advances in experimental helicene chemistry. Concerned with first-principles calculations of carbohelicenes, our work surpasses CH[12] as the largest system investigated to date and unravels trends in the electronic structure of the low-lying states of the homologous series. Utilizing a highly efficient implementation of linear response algorithms, we present electronic circular dichroism (CD) spectra of carbohelicenes ranging from CH[5] to CH[30] at the level of Kohn-Sham density-functional theory. Our results for a systematic increase in system size show the emergence of new CD bands that subsequently rise to intensities dominating the spectrum. The spectral band progressions exhibit a periodicity directly linked to the number of overlapping layers of conjugation. While our findings rectify the current understanding of the electronic structure of carbohelicenes, they also serve as a general call for caution regarding the extrapolation of trends from small system ranges.

Abstract
We propose a hybrid anharmonic-harmonic scheme for vibrational broadenings, which embeds a reduced-space vibrational configuration interaction (VCI) anharmonic wave function treatment in the independent-mode displaced harmonic oscillator (IMDHO) model. The resulting systematically-improvable VCI-in-IMDHO model allows including the vibronic effects of all vibrational degrees of freedom, while focusing the effort on the important degrees of freedom with minimal extra computational effort compared to a reduced-space VCI treatment. We show for oligothiophene examples that the VCI-in-IMDHO approach can yield accurate vibrational profiles employing smaller vibrational spaces in the VCI part than the reduced-space VCI approach. By this, the VCI-in-IMDHO model enables accurate calculation of vibrational profiles of common fluorescent dyes with more than 100 vibrational degrees of freedom. We illustrate this for three examples of fluorescent biomarkers of current interest. These are the oligothiophene-based fluorescent dye called HS84, 1,4-diphenylbutadiene, and an anthracene diimide. For all examples, we assess the impact of the anharmonic treatment on the vibrational broadening, which we find to be more pronounced for the intensities than for the peak positions.

We
report on the synthesis and self-assembly of 2,15- and 4,13-disubstituted
carbo[6]helicenes 1 and 2 bearing 3,4,5-tridodecyloxybenzamide
groups. The self-assembly of these [6]helicenes is strongly influenced
by the substitution pattern in the helicene core that affects the
mutual orientation of the monomeric units in the aggregated form.
Thus, the 2,15-substituted derivative 1 undergoes an
isodesmic supramolecular polymerization forming globular nanoparticles
that maintain circularly polarized light (CPL) with glum values as high as 2 × 10–2.
Unlike carbo[6]helicene 1, the 4,13-substituted derivative 2 follows a cooperative mechanism generating helical one-dimensional
fibers. As a result of this helical organization, [6]helicene 2 exhibits a unique modification in its ECD spectral pattern
showing sign inversion at low energy, accompanied by a sign change
of the CPL with glum values of 1.2 ×
10–3, thus unveiling an example of CPL inversion
upon supramolecular polymerization. These helical supramolecular structures
with high chiroptical activity, when deposited on conductive surfaces,
revealed highly efficient electron-spin filtering abilities, with
electron spin polarizations up to 80% for 1 and 60% for 2, as measured by magnetic conducting atomic force microscopy.

Abstract
New forms of molecular nanocarbon particularly looped polyarenes adopting various topologies contribute to the fundamental science and practical applications. Here we report the synthesis of an infinity-shaped polyarene, infinitene (1) (cyclo[c.c.c.c.c.c.e.e.e.e.e.e]dodecakisbenzene), comprising consecutively fused 12-benzene rings forming an enclosed loop with a strain energy of 60.2 kcal·mol-1. Infinitene (1) represents a topoisomer of still-hypothetical [12]circulene, and its scaffold can be formally visualized as the outcome of the "stitching" of two homochiral [6]helicene subunits by both their ends. The synthetic strategy encompasses transformation of a rationally designed dithiacyclophane to cyclophadiene through the Stevens rearrangement and pyrolysis of the corresponding S,S'-bis(oxide) followed by the photocyclization. The structure of 1 is a unique hybrid of helicene and circulene with a molecular formula of C48H24, which can be regarded as an isomer for kekulene, [6,6]carbon nanobelt ([6,6]CNB), and [12]cyclacene. Infinitene (1) is a bench-stable yellow solid with green fluorescence and soluble to common organic solvents. Its figure-eight molecular structure was unambiguously confirmed by X-ray crystallography. The scaffold of 1 is significantly compressed as manifested by a remarkably shortened distance (3.152-3.192 Å) between the centroids of two π-π stacked central benzene rings and the closest C···C distance of 2.920 Å. Fundamental photophysical properties of 1 were thoroughly elucidated by UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopic studies and density functional theory calculations. Its configurational stability enabled separation of the corresponding enantiomers (P,P) and (M,M) by a chiral HPLC. Circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) measurements revealed that 1 has moderate |gCD| and |gCPL| values.

Abstract
A new type of "Geländer" molecule based on a ortho-tetraphenylene core is presented. The central para-quaterphenyl backbone is wrapped by a 4,4'-di((Z)-styryl)-1,1'-biphenyl banister, with its aryl rings covalently attached to all four phenyl rings of the backbone. The resulting helical chiral bicyclic architecture consists exclusively of sp2 -hybridized carbon atoms. The target structure was assembled by expanding the central ortho-tetraphenylene subunit with the required additional phenyl rings followed by a twofold macrocyclization. The first macrocyclization attempts based on a twofold McMurry coupling were successful but low yielding; the second strategy, profiting from olefin metathesis, provided satisfying yields. Hydrogenation of the olefins resulted in a saturated derivative of similar topology, thereby allowing the interdependence between saturation and physico-chemical properties to be studied. The target structures, including their solid-state structures, were fully characterized. The helical chiral bicycle was synthesized as a racemate and separated into pure enantiomers by HPLC on a chiral stationary phase. Comparison of recorded and simulated chiroptical properties allowed the enantiomers to be assigned.

Abstract
In one pot, tertiary alkyl amines are oxidized to enamines by cationic dioxa[6]helicene, which further reacts as electrophile and oxidant to form mono or bis donor-π-acceptor coupling products. This original and convergent synthetic approach provides a strong extension of conjugation yielding chromophores that absorb intensively in far-red or NIR domains (λmax up to 791 nm) and fluoresce in the NIR as well (λmax up to 887 nm). Intense ECD properties around 790 nm with a |Δϵ| value up to 60 M-1 cm-1 are observed.

Abstract
While the development of chiral molecules displaying circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) has received considerable attention, the corresponding CPL intensity, g lum, hardly exceeds 10-2 at the molecular level owing to the difficulty in optimizing the key parameters governing such a luminescence process. To address this challenge, we report here the synthesis and chiroptical properties of a new family of π-helical push-pull systems based on carbo[6]helicene, where the latter acts as either a chiral electron acceptor or a donor unit. This comprehensive experimental and theoretical investigation shows that the magnitude and relative orientation of the electric (μe ) and magnetic (μ m ) dipole transition moments can be tuned efficiently with regard to the molecular chiroptical properties, which results in high g lum values, i.e. up to 3-4 × 10-2. Our investigations revealed that the optimized mutual orientation of the electric and magnetic dipoles in the excited state is a crucial parameter to achieve intense helicene-mediated exciton coupling, which is a major contributor to the obtained strong CPL. Finally, top-emission CP-OLEDs were fabricated through vapor deposition, which afforded a promising g El of around 8 × 10-3. These results bring about further molecular design guidelines to reach high CPL intensity and offer new insights into the development of innovative CP-OLED architectures.

Abstract
Helicenes are known to provide extremely strong optical activity. Prediction of the properties of helicenes may facilitate their design and synthesis for analytical or materials sciences. On a model 7,12,17-trioxa[11]helicene molecule, experimental results from multiple spectroscopic techniques are analyzed on the basis of density functional theory (DFT) simulations to test computational methodology and analyze the origins of chirality. Infrared (IR), vibrational circular dichroism (VCD), electronic circular dichroism (ECD), magnetic circular dichroism (MCD), and Raman optical activity (ROA, computations only) spectra are compared. Large dissymmetry factors are predicted both for vibrational (ROA/Raman ∼ VCD/IR ∼ 10-3) and electronic (ECD/Abs ∼10-2) optical activity, which could be verified experimentally except for ROA. Largest VCD signals come from a strong vibrational coupling of the C-H in-plane and out-of-plane bending modes in stacked helicene rings. The sum-over-states (SOS) approach appeared convenient for simulation of MCD spectra. Our results demonstrated that selected computational methods can be successfully used for reliable modeling of spectral and chiroptical properties of large helicenes. In particular, they can be used for guiding rational design of strongly chiral chromophores.

Abstract
Polycyclic aromatic compounds consisting of four or five fused anthracene units were synthesized by PtCl2 -catalyzed cycloisomerization as novel long expanded helicenes. These compounds have helical structures with significant stacking of the terminal anthracene moieties at 0.33 nm interlayer distance. In the UV-vis and fluorescence spectra, the absorption and emission bands were red-shifted as the number of fused anthracene units was increased. The characteristic broad and long-lived emission bands of the long analogues are explained by the excimer-like stabilization of the excited state. These photophysical data as well as their cyclic voltammetric data are discussed on the basis of the π-conjugation and interlayer π⋅⋅⋅π interactions in the molecular structures and the molecular orbitals. The barrier and mechanism of helical inversion are also reported.

Abstract
π-Helical push-pull dyes were prepared and their (chir)optical properties were investigated both experimentally and computationally. Specific fluorescent behaviour of bis-substituted system was observed with unprecedented solvent effect on the intensity of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL, dissymmetry factor decreasing from 10-2 to 10-3 with an increase in solvent polarity) that was linked to a change in symmetry of chiral excited state and suppression of interbranched exciton coupling. The results highlight the potential of CPL spectroscopy to study and provide a deeper understanding of electronic photophysical processes in chiral π-conjugated molecules.

Abstract
Two regioisomeric pairs of heptahelical mono- and biscoumarins that are differentiated by "inward" and "outward" disposition of the pyran-2-one moiety have been synthesized and investigated to understand the influence of helicity on excited-state and chiroptical properties. A slight variation in the helicities is found to manifest in contrasting excited-state properties of coumarin-annelated heptahelicenes; in addition to the intramolecular charge transfer, structural relaxation in the excited state is shown from theoretical calculations to cause decrease in the fluorescence quantum yield for a system with higher helicity. The optically pure enantiomers of heptahelical coumarins exhibit helicity-dependent chiroptical properties, namely, specific rotations, molar ellipticities, Cotton effects, and anisotropic dissymmetry factors. Theoretical calculations point to factors that are not readily explicable.

Abstract
Chiral nanosized confinements play a major role for enantioselective recognition and reaction control in biological systems. Supramolecular self-assembly gives access to artificial mimics with tunable sizes and properties. Herein, a new family of [Pd2 L4 ] coordination cages based on a chiral [6]helicene backbone is introduced. A racemic mixture of the bis-monodentate pyridyl ligand L1 selectively assembles with PdII cations under chiral self-discrimination to an achiral meso cage, cis-[Pd2 L1P2 L1M2 ]. Enantiopure L1 forms homochiral cages [Pd2 L1P/M4 ]. A longer derivative L2 forms chiral cages [Pd2 L2P/M4 ] with larger cavities, which bind optical isomers of chiral guests with different affinities. Owing to its distinct chiroptical properties, this cage can distinguish non-chiral guests of different lengths, as they were found to squeeze or elongate the cavity under modulation of the helical pitch of the helicenes. The CD spectroscopic results were supported by ion mobility mass spectrometry.

Abstract
Helicene ligands possess a unique helicoidal π-conjugated framework providing high optical rotation values. This has stimulated a growing interest in helicene derivatives as building blocks, which has triggered the development of simple strategies to tune their properties. In this context, we evaluated the formation of cation-π complexes derived from [6]- and [7]helicene, involving Sn2+ , Cd2+ , and In+ in addition of Ag+ , which appears as a plausible modification of such helicoidal structure. The nature of the cation-π interaction in the studied helicene complexes exhibits a covalent character, accounting for ligand π-donation to 5 s and 5p empty orbitals of the involved cations. Furthermore, the evaluation of their optical activity exhibits notorious modification patterns in the circular dichroism spectrum, suggesting that the modifications of the optical activity are dependent on the nature of the cation and its related charge state. Thus, the plausible formation of new cation-π complexes derived from helicene ligands, as discussed here, may lead to the characterization of novel species expanding the chemistry of helicene metal complexes to even to larger helicene units. We believe that the present study may open new avenues in the formation of cation-π helicene complexes.

Abstract
Because of the unique interaction of radial aromatic blades, propeller-shaped hexaarylbenzenes (HABs) attract much research interest and find various practical applications. By introducing a small point-chiral group at the tip of aromatic blade(s), HAB becomes propeller-chiral to exhibit strong Cotton effects. Because of the dynamic nature of propeller chirality, the chiroptical properties of HAB critically responded to minute changes in the environment. Using a series of chiral HABs with one to six ( R)-1-methylpropyloxy substituent(s) introduced at the blade tip, we elucidated how the smallest chiral auxiliary at the HAB periphery progressively and cooperatively boosts the overall chiroptical properties and also how subtle changes in temperature and solvent structure affect the propeller dynamics and thus the chiroptical responses. The unique features of propeller-chiral HABs further enabled us to switch on/off their circularly polarized luminescence.

Abstract
Circular dichroisms (CDs) of planar chiral 4-bromo[2.2]paracyclophane (1) and three isomeric dibromo[2.2]paracyclophanes (p-2, m'-2, and o'-2) were investigated experimentally and theoretically. They all exhibited strong multisignate Cotton effects (CEs) at the 1Lb, 1La, and 1B transitions of the component (bromo)benzene chromophore and were comparable to each other. For all of the cyclophanes examined, the enantiomer that eluted earlier from a chiral high-performance liquid chromatography column (Chiralcel IA or IB) exhibited negative and positive CEs at the 1Lb and 1La bands, respectively, which were followed by a more complicated pattern of CDs at the higher-energy bands. These CD features were well reproduced by quantum chemical calculations, allowing us to unambiguously assign the absolute configurations of the first-eluted enantiomers as R p in all of the cases examined. Interestingly, the CDs of 1 and 2, although largely comparable in shape, were still sensitive to the number and pattern of bromine substitution, showing closer resemblance between m'-2 and o'-2 and between p-2 and 1. The theoretical calculations also reproduced successfully these spectral resemblance between them. The anisotropy (g) factors for the 1Lb bands of these cyclophanes were considerably large (∼10-2), whereas those for the 1La band were conventional in the order of 10-3. In addition, a weak CE was observed in the low-energy region at around 320 nm, which turned out to originate from the interplanar interaction and is hence assigned to the "cyclophane band". The experimental g factors of this band were fairly large in the order of 10-2, but the computation turned out to be quite challenging and were less well reproduced theoretically, ascribable to the forbidden nature of the transition.

Abstract
Influence of helicity on the excited-state as well as chiroptical properties of two sets of regiohelical coumarins that are differentiated by "inward" and "outward" disposition of the pyran-2-one ring has been investigated. A subtle difference in the helicities manifests in divergent excited-state properties and significant differences in the dipole moments. The latter permit heretofore unprecedented regiodifferentiation in the O-H⋅⋅⋅O hydrogen-bond assisted electron-transfer quenching by phenols. Furthermore, the enantiopure hexahelical coumarins exhibit strong Cotton effects and lend themselves to a very high differentiation in the specific rotations and anisotropic dissymmetry factors. The specific rotation observed for 6-in turns out being the highest of the values reported for all hexahelicenes reported so far.

Abstract
Circular dichroisms (CDs) of neutral and protonated [3.3]anthracenopyridinophane (1 and 1-H+ ) were investigated experimentally and theoretically. Introducing an anthracene moiety with extended conjugation affected the cyclophane structure with the bent angles being appreciably reduced from those of parent [3.3]pyridinophane. The Cotton effects (CEs) observed at the 1 Bb band for both 1 and 1-H+ were fairly strong and apparently bisignate, which, however, turned out not to be a simple exciton couplet but to be composed of multiple transitions. In contrast, the CEs were much weaker in the 1 La band region. The spectral changes upon protonation were less significant compared with the parent pyridinophane, being dominated by the local transitions of anthracene. Nevertheless, the CD spectra of 1 and 1-H+ were well reproduced by theoretical calculations to allow us an unambiguous absolute configuration determination of the first high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) elute (from Chiralcel IB column) as Sp . The transannular interactions between the anthracene and pyridine/pyridinium units were examined by UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy to reveal a charge-transfer (CT) band in the low-energy region, particularly for 1-H+ . Despite the comparable CT interactions, the CE at the CT band was much stronger for the anthracenopyridinophane than for the parent pyridinophane, affording an anisotropy (g) factor as large as 4 × 10-3 .

Abstract
ortho-Oligo(phenylene)ethynylenes (o-OPEs) stapled with enantiopure 2,3-dihydroxybutane diethers have highly intense circular dichroism (CD) spectra and excellent circular polarized luminescence (CPL) responses (glum values up to 1.1 × 10-2), which are consistent with homochiral helically folded structures. In the presence of Ag(i), a change in the CPL emission is observed, representing the first example of CPL active small organic molecular emitters, which can be modulated by carbophilic interactions in a reversible manner.

Abstract
The synthesis of redox-active p- and o-quinones 2-phenylamino-4-phenylimino[6]helicene-1-one 1, 2-phenylamino[6]-helicene-1,4-dione 2, and 4-phenyl[6]helicene-1,2-dione 3 in their enantiopure forms by post-functionalization of (P)- and (M)-1,2-dimethoxy[6]helicene is presented. Structural characterization in solution and in the solid state was accomplished by 2D NMR spectroscopy methods and X-ray diffraction analysis, respectively. Interpretation of electrochemical redox data was accompanied by a detailed orbital picture, derived from DFT calculations. The electronic structures of compounds 1-3 were investigated by UV/Vis and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectroscopy, complemented by TD-DFT calculations. Quinones 1-3 were chemically reduced to study the EPR signatures of their respective radical anions. DFT methods were used for the atom assignment of the hyperfine coupling constants. The results are discussed within the context of electrochromic chiral switches and molecular recognition.
