Abstract
Excitation spectra of protonated and deuteronated anthracene are obtained by triple-resonance dissociation spectroscopy. Very cold cations, protonated/deuteronated exclusively at the 9-position, are generated from two-colour two-photon threshold ionisation of 9-dihydroanthracenyl radicals (C14H11). The excitation spectra reveal rich structure, not resolved in previous studies, that is assigned based on anharmonic and Herzberg-Teller coupling calculations. This work reveals that the excitation of protonated anthracene induces a symmetry-breaking intramolecular charge-transfer process along a Marcus-Hush coordinate, where the positively charged hole hops from the central bridging sp2 carbon, onto one of the aromatic rings. Signatures of this charge-transfer event are observed in the excitation spectrum, through active Herzberg-Teller progressions.

Abstract
The photophysics of biochromophore ions often depends on the isomeric or protomeric distribution, yet this distribution, and the individual isomer contributions to an action spectrum, can be difficult to quantify. Here, we use two separate photodissociation action spectroscopy instruments to record electronic spectra for protonated forms of the green (pHBDI+) and cyan (Cyan+) fluorescent protein chromophores. One instrument allows for cryogenic (T = 40 ± 10 K) cooling of the ions, while the other offers the ability to perform protomer-selective photodissociation spectroscopy. We show that both chromophores are generated as two protomers when using electrospray ionisation, and that the protomers have partially overlapping absorption profiles associated with the S1 ← S0 transition. The action spectra for both species span the 340-460 nm range, although the spectral onset for the pHBDI+ protomer with the proton residing on the carbonyl oxygen is red-shifted by ≈40 nm relative to the lower-energy imine protomer. Similarly, the imine and carbonyl protomers are the lowest energy forms of Cyan+, with the main band for the carbonyl protomer red-shifted by ≈60 nm relative to the lower-energy imine protomer. The present strategy for investigating protomers can be applied to a wide range of other biochromophore ions.

Abstract
The photodetachment and stability of R-Mandelate, the deprotonated form of the R-Mandelic acid, was investigated by observing the neutral species issued from either simple photodetachment or dissociative photodetachment in a cold anions set-up. R-Mandalate has the possibility to form an intramolecular ionic hydrogen-bond between adjacent hydroxyl and carboxylate groups. The potential energy surface along the proton transfer (PT) coordinate between both groups (O- …H+ …- OCO) features a single local minima, with the proton localized on the O- group (OH…- OCO). However, the structure with the proton localized on the - OCO group (O- …HOCO) is also observed because it falls within the extremity of the vibrational wavefunction of the OH…- OCO isomer along the PT coordinate. The stability of the corresponding radicals, produced upon photodetachment, is strongly dependent on the position of the proton in the anion: the radicals produced from the OH…- OCO isomer decarboxylate without barrier, while the radicals produced from the O- …HOCO isomer are stable.

Abstract
Photodissociation action spectroscopy has made a great progress in expanding investigations of gas-phase ion structures. This review deals with aspects of gas-phase ion electronic excitations that result in wavelength-dependent dissociation and light emission via fluorescence, chiefly covering the ultraviolet and visible regions of the spectrum. The principles are briefly outlined and a few examples of instrumentation are presented. The main thrust of the review is to collect and selectively present applications of UV-vis action spectroscopy to studies of stable gas-phase ion structures and combinations of spectroscopy with ion mobility, collision-induced dissociation, and ion-ion reactions leading to the generation of reactive intermediates and electronic energy transfer.

Abstract
We investigated the discoloration of a highly concentrated monoclonal antibody (mAbZ) in sodium acetate (NaAc) and histidine/lysine (His/Lys) buffer after exposure to visible light. The color change of the mAbZ formulation was significantly more intense in NaAc buffer and developed a characteristic absorbance with a λmax of ca. 450 nm. We characterized this photo-chemically generated chromophore by comparison with visible light photo-degradation of a concentrated solution of a model compound for protein Trp residues, N-acetyl-l-tryptophan amide (NATA). The photo-degradation of NATA generated a chromophoric product with a λmax of ca. 450 nm and UV-vis spectroscopic properties identical to those of the product generated from mAbZ. This product was isolated and analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) and 1H, 13C, and 1H-13C heteronuclear single-quantum correlation NMR spectroscopy. MS/MS analysis reveals a product characterized by the loss of 33 Da from NATA, referred to as NATA-33. Together, the NMR data suggest that this product may be N-(2,4-dihydrocyclopenta[b]indol-2-yl)acetamide (structure P3a) or a tautomer (P3b-d).

Abstract
The decarboxylation (CO2 loss) mechanism of cold monodeprotonated phthalic acid was studied in a photodissociation action spectrometer by quantifying mass-selected product anions and neutral particles as a function of the excitation energy. The analysis proceeded by interpreting the translational energy distribution of the generated uncharged products, and with the help of quantum calculations. In particular, this study reveals different fragmentation pathways in the deprotonated anion and in the radical generated upon electron photodetachment. Unlike the behavior found in other deprotonated aryl carboxylic acids, which do not fragment in the anion excited state, a double loss of CO2 molecules takes place in the phthalic monoanion. Moreover, at higher excitation energies the phthalic monoanion experiences decarboxylative photodetachment with a statistical distribution of product translational energies, which contrasts with the impulsive dissociation reactions characteristic of other aryl carboxylic anions.

Abstract
We present a study of the photofragmentation of three protonated azaindole molecules - 7-azaindole, 6-azaindole, and 5-azaindole - consisting of fused pyrrole-pyridine bicyclic aromatic systems, in which the pyridinic (protonated) nitrogen heteroatom is located at the 7, 6, and 5 positions, respectively. Photofragmentation electronic spectra of the isolated aforementioned azaindolinium cations reveal that their photodynamics extends over timescales covering nine orders of magnitude and provide evidence about the resultant fragmentation pathways. Moreover, we show how the position of the heteroatom in the aromatic skeleton influences the excited state energetics, fragmentation pathways, and fragmentation timescales. Computed ab initio adiabatic transition energies are used to assist the assignation of the spectra, while geometry optimisation in the excited electronic states as well as ab initio calculations along the potential surfaces demonstrate the role of ππ*/πσ* coupling and/or large geometry changes in the dynamics of these species. Evidence supporting the formation of Dewar valence isomers as intermediates involved in sub-picosecond relaxation processes is discussed.

Abstract
The photocatalytic oxidation of water with molecular or polymeric N-heterocyclic chromophores is a topic of high current interest in the context of artificial photosynthesis, that is, the conversion of solar energy to clean fuels. Hydrogen-bonded clusters of N-heterocycles with water molecules in a molecular beam are simple model systems for which the basic mechanisms of photochemical water oxidation can be studied under well-defined conditions. In this work, we explored the photoinduced H-atom transfer reaction in pyrimidine-water clusters yielding pyrimidinyl and hydroxyl radicals with laser spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and trajectory-based ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. The oxidation of water by photoexcited pyrimidine is unequivocally confirmed by the detection of the pyrimidinyl radical. The dynamics simulations provide information on the time scales and branching ratios of the reaction. While relaxation to local minima of the S1 potential-energy surface is the dominant reaction channel, the H-atom transfer reaction occurs on ultrafast time scales (faster than about 100 fs) with a branching ratio of a few percent.

Abstract
Valence-bound anions with polar neutral cores (μ > ∼2.5 D) can support dipole-bound excited states below the detachment threshold. These dipole-bound states (DBSs) are highly diffuse and the weakly bound electron in the DBS can be readily autodetached via vibronic coupling. Excited DBSs can be observed in photodetachment spectroscopy using a tunable laser. Tuning the detachment laser to above-threshold vibrational resonances yields vibrationally enhanced resonant photoelectron spectra, which are highly non-Franck-Condon with much richer vibrational information. This perspective describes recent advances in the studies of excited DBSs of cryogenically cooled anions using high-resolution photoelectron imaging (PEI) and resonant photoelectron spectroscopy (rPES). The basic features of dipole-bound excited states and highly non-Franck-Condon resonant photoelectron spectra will be discussed. The power of rPES to yield rich vibrational information beyond conventional PES will be highlighted, especially for low-frequency and Franck-Condon-inactive vibrational modes, which are otherwise not accessible from non-resonant conventional PES. Mode-selectivity and intra-molecular rescattering have been observed during the vibrationally induced autodetachment. Conformer-specific rPES is possible due to the different dipole-bound excited states of molecular conformers with polar neutral cores. For molecules with μ ≪ 2.5 D or without dipole moments, but large quadrupole moments, excited quadrupole-bound states can exist, which can also be used to conduct rPES.

Abstract
The effect of complexation with sulfuric acid on the photo-dissociation of protonated Cinchona alkaloids, namely cinchonidine (Cd), quinine (Qn) and quinidine (Qd), is studied by combining laser spectroscopy with quantum chemical calculations. The protonated complexes are structurally characterized in a room-temperature ion trap by means of infra-red multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy in the fingerprint and the ν(XH) (X = C, N, O) stretch regions. Comparison with density functional theory calculations including dispersion (DFT-D) unambiguously shows that the complex consists of a doubly protonated Cinchona alkaloid strongly bound to a bisulfate HSO4- anion, which bridges the two protonated sites of the Cinchona alkaloid. UV excitation of the complex does not induce loss of specific photo fragments, in contrast to the protonated monomer or dimer, for which photo-specific fragments were observed. Indeed the UV-induced fragmentation pattern is identical to that observed in collision-induced dissociation experiments. Analysis of the nature of the first electronic transitions at the second order approximate coupled-cluster level (CC2) explains the difference in the behavior of the complex relative to the monomer or dimer towards UV excitation.

Abstract
The photoswitchability of a protonated aromatic compound (2-aminobenzaldehyde, 2ABZH+) in its individual and microhydrated states has been addressed based on the RI-MP2/RI-CC2 theoretical methods. Our calculated results give insight into the ultrafast nonradiative deactivation mechanism of the 2ABZH+, driven by a conical intersection between the S1/ S0 potential energy surfaces. Also, it has been predicted that protonation accompanies a significant blue shift effect on the first 1ππ* excited state of 2ABZ by 0.87 eV (at least 50 nm).

Abstract
Excited-state hydrogen transfer (ESHT) is responsible for various photochemical processes of aromatics, including photoprotection of nuclear basis. Its mechanism is explained by internal conversion from the aromatic ππ* to πσ* states via conical intersection. This means that the electron is transferred to a diffuse Rydberg-like σ* orbital apart from proton migration. This picture means the electron and the proton do not move together and the dynamics are different in principle. Here, we have applied picosecond time-resolved near-infrared (NIR) and infrared (IR) spectroscopy to the phenol-(NH3 )5 cluster, the benchmark system of ESHT, and monitored the electron transfer and proton motion independently. The electron transfer monitored by the NIR transition rises within 3 ps, while the overall H transfer detected by the IR absorption of NH vibration appears with a lifetime of about 20 ps. This clearly proves that the electron motion and proton migration are decoupled. Such a difference of the time-evolutions between the NIR absorption and the IR transition has not been detected in a cluster with three ammonia molecules. We will report our full observation together with theoretical calculations of the potential energy surfaces of the ππ* and πσ* states, and will discuss the ESHT mechanism and its cluster size-dependence between n=3 and 5. It is suggested that the presence and absence of a barrier in the proton transfer coordinate cause the different dynamics.

Abstract
We employ cold ion spectroscopy (UV action and IR-UV double resonance) in the gas phase to unravel the qualitative structural elements of G-type alkali metal cationized (X = Li(+), Na(+), K(+)) tetralignol complexes connected by β-O-4 linkages. The conformation-specific spectroscopy reveals a variety of conformers, each containing distinct infrared spectra in the OH stretching region, building on recent studies of the neutral and alkali metal cationized β-O-4 dimers. The alkali metal ion is discovered to bind in penta-coordinate pockets to ether and OH groups involving at least two of the three β-O-4 linkages. Different binding sites are distinguished from one another by the number of M(+)···OH···O interactions present in the binding pocket, leading to characteristic IR transitions appearing below 3550 cm(-1). This interaction is mitigated in the major conformer of the K(+) adduct, demonstrating a clear impact of the size of the charge center on the three-dimensional structure of the tetramer.

Abstract
The excited state lifetimes of DNA bases are often very short due to very efficient non-radiative processes assigned to the ππ*-nπ* coupling. A set of protonated aromatic diazine molecules (pyridazine, pyrimidine and pyrazine C4H5N2(+)) and protonated pyrimidine DNA bases (cytosine, uracil and thymine), as well as the protonated pyridine (C5H6N(+)), have been investigated. For all these molecules except one tautomer of protonated uracil (enol-keto), electronic spectroscopy exhibits vibrational line broadening. Excited state geometry optimization at the CC2 level has been conducted to find out whether the excited state lifetimes measured from line broadening can be correlated to the calculated ordering of the ππ* and nπ* states and the ππ*-nπ* energy gap. The short lifetimes, observed when one nitrogen atom of the ring is not protonated, can be rationalized by relaxation of the ππ* state to the nπ* state or directly to the electronic ground state through ring puckering.

Abstract
The equilibrium geometry and 75 vibrational normal-mode frequencies of the ground and first excited states of protonated pyrene isomers were calculated and characterized in the adiabatic representation by using the complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) method. Electronic absorption spectra of solid neon matrixes in the wavelength range 495-415 nm were determined by Maier et al. and they were analyzed using time-dependent density functional theory calculations (TDDFT). CASSCF calculations and absorption and emission spectra simulations by one-photon excitation equations were used to optimize the excited and ground state structures of protonated pyrene isomers. The absorption band was attributed to the S0 → S1 electronic transition in 1H-Py(+), and a band origin was used at 20580.96 cm(-1). The displaced harmonic oscillator approximation and Franck-Condon approximation were used to simulate the absorption spectrum of the (1) (1)A' ← X[combining tilde](1)A' transition of 1H-Py(+), and the main vibronic transitions were assigned for the first ππ* state. It shows that the vibronic structures were dominated by one of the eight active totally symmetric modes, with ν15 being the most crucial. This indicates that the electronic transition of the S1((1)A') state calculated in the adiabatic representation effectively includes a contribution from the adiabatic vibronic coupling through Franck-Condon factors perturbed by harmonic oscillators. The present method can adequately reproduce experimental absorption and fluorescence spectra of a gas phase.

Abstract
The excited state lifetimes of conformer- and mode-selected cold protonated tyrosine have been measured for the first time through a picosecond pump-probe photodissociation scheme. Whereas the photofragmentation mechanism of protonated tyrosine ions strongly depends upon the interaction of the carboxylic acid group with the phenol ring, their excited state lifetimes are quite similar and decrease as the excess energy increases from 1.5 ns at the band origin to 900 ps and less than 500 ps for the 10(1) and 10(2) bands, respectively. Surprisingly, the excited state lifetime of the conformer with the anti orientation of the hydroxyl oxygen lone pair with respect to the ammonium group dramatically increases as compared to the others conformers up to 10 ns at the band origin and by more than a factor of 2 for the 10(1) band. The present experimental results clearly emphasize the subtle effect of the structural conformation on the excited state properties of molecular ions.

Abstract
The electronic spectra of cold benzylium (C6H5-CH2 (+)) and 1-phenylethyl (C6H5-CH-CH3 (+)) cations have been recorded via photofragment spectroscopy. Benzylium and 1-phenylethyl cations produced from electrosprayed benzylamine and phenylethylamine solutions, respectively, were stored in a cryogenically cooled quadrupole ion trap and photodissociated by an OPO laser, scanned in parts of the UV and visible regions (600-225 nm). The electronic states and active vibrational modes of the benzylium and 1-phenylethyl cations as well as those of their tropylium or methyl tropylium isomers have been calculated with ab initio methods for comparison with the spectra observed. Sharp vibrational progressions are observed in the visible region while the absorption features are much broader in the UV. The visible spectrum of the benzylium cation is similar to that obtained in an argon tagging experiment [V. Dryza, N. Chalyavi, J. A. Sanelli, and E. J. Bieske, J. Chem. Phys. 137, 204304 (2012)], with an additional splitting assigned to Fermi resonances. The visible spectrum of the 1-phenylethyl cation also shows vibrational progressions. For both cations, the second electronic transition is observed in the UV, around 33,000 cm(-1) (4.1 eV) and shows a broadened vibrational progression. In both cases the S2 optimized geometry is non-planar. The third electronic transition observed around 40,000 cm(-1) (5.0 eV) is even broader with no apparent vibrational structures, which is indicative of either a fast non-radiative process or a very large change in geometry between the excited and the ground states. The oscillator strengths calculated for tropylium and methyl tropylium are weak. Therefore, these isomeric structures are most likely not responsible for these absorption features. Finally, the fragmentation pattern changes in the second and third electronic states: C2H2 loss becomes predominant at higher excitation energies, for both cations.

Abstract
We are presenting the electronic photofragment spectra of the protonated pyrimidine DNA base homodimers. Only the thymine dimer exhibits a well structured vibrational progression, while the protonated monomer shows broad vibrational bands. This shows that proton bonding can block some nonradiative processes present in the monomer.

Abstract
A novel method for double-resonance spectroscopy in a cold quadrupole ion trap is presented, which utilizes dipolar resonant excitation of fragment ions in the quadrupole ion trap. Photofragments by a burn laser are removed by applying an auxiliary RF to the trap, and a probe laser detects the depletion of photofragments by the burn laser. By scanning the wavelength of the burn laser, conformation-specific UV spectrum of a cold ion is obtained. This simple and powerful method is applicable to any type of double-resonance spectroscopy in a cold quadrupole ion trap and was applied to UV-UV hole-burning spectroscopy of protonated adenine dimer. It was found that protonated adenine dimer has multiple conformers/tautomers, each with multiple excited states with drastically different excited state dynamics.

Abstract
Recently, DNA molecules have received great attention because of their potential applications in material science. One interesting example is the production of highly fluorescent and tunable DNA-Agn clusters with cytosine (C)-rich DNA strands. Here, we report the UV photofragmentation spectra of gas-phase cytosine···Ag(+)···cytosine (C2Ag(+)) and cytosine···H(+)···cytosine (C2H(+)) complexes together with theoretical calculations. In both cases, the excitation energy does not differ significantly from that of isolated cytosine or protonated cytosine, indicating that the excitation takes place on the DNA base. However, the excited-state lifetime of the C2H(+) (τ = 85 fs), estimated from the bandwidth of the spectrum, is at least 2 orders of magnitude shorter than that of the C2Ag(+) (τ > 5000 fs). The increased excited-state lifetime upon silver complexation is quite unexpected, and it clearly opens the question about what factors are controlling the nonradiative decay in pyrimidine DNA bases. This is an important result for the expanding field of metal-mediated base pairing and may also be important to the photophysical properties of DNA-templated fluorescent silver clusters.

Abstract
The potential energy profiles of neutral and protonated anisole and p-fluoroanisole at different electronic states have been investigated extensively by the RI-MP2 and RI-CC2 methods. The calculations reveal that the relaxation dynamics in protonated anisole and p-fluoroanisole are essentially different from those of the neutral analogues. In neutral anisole/p-fluoroanisole, the (1)πσ* state plays a vital relaxation role along the O-CH3 coordinate, yielding the CH3 radical. For both of these molecules, the calculations indicate conical intersections (CIs) between the ground and excited state potential energy (PE) curves, hindered by a small barrier, and providing non-adiabatic gates for radiation-less deactivation to the ground state. Nevertheless, for the protonated cases, besides the prefulvenic deformation of the benzene ring, it has been predicted that the lowest (1)(σ,n)π* state along the C-O-C bond angle plays an important role in photochemistry and the relaxation dynamics. The S1, S0 PE profiles of protonated anisole along with the former reaction coordinate (out-of-plane deformation) show a barrierless relaxation pathway, which can be responsible for the ultrafast deactivation of excited systems to the ground state via the low-lying S1/S0 conical intersection. Moreover, the later reaction coordinate in protonated species (C-O-C angle from 120°-180°) is consequently accompanied with the bond cleavage of C-OCH3 at the (1)(σ,n)π* state, hindered by a barrier of ∼0.51 eV, and can be responsible for the relaxation of excited systems with significant excess energy (hν≥ 5 eV). Furthermore, according to the RI-CC2 calculated results, different effects on the S1-S0 electronic transition energy of anisole and p-fluoroanisole upon protonation have been predicted. The first electronic transitions of anisole and p-fluoroanisole shift by ∼0.3 and 1.3 eV to the red respectively due to protonation.

Abstract
A new ultraviolet-ultraviolet hole-burning (UV-UV HB) spectroscopic scheme has been developed for cold gas-phase ions in a quadrupole ion trap (QIT) connected with a time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometer. In this method, a pump UV laser generates a population hole for the ions trapped in the cold QIT, and a second UV laser (probe) monitors the population hole for the ions extracted to the field-free region of the TOF mass spectrometer. Here, the neutral fragments generated by the UV dissociation of the ions with the second laser are detected. This UV-UV HB spectroscopy was applied to protonated dibenzylamine and to protonated uracil. Protonated uracil exhibits two strong electronic transitions; one has a band origin at 31760 cm(-1) and the other at 39000 cm(-1). From the UV-UV HB measurement and quantum chemical calculations, the lower-energy transition is assigned to the enol-keto tautomer and the higher-energy one to the enol-enol tautomer.
