Extraction of uranyl from spent nuclear fuel wastewater via complexation-a local vibrational mode study

CONTEXT

The efficient extraction of uranyl from spent nuclear fuel wastewater for subsequent reprocessing and reuse is an essential effort toward minimization of long-lived radioactive waste. N-substituted amides and Schiff base ligands are propitious candidates, where extraction occurs via complexation with the uranyl moiety. In this study, we extensively probed chemical bonding in various uranyl complexes, utilizing the local vibrational modes theory alongside QTAIM and NBO analyses. We focused on (i) the assessment of the equatorial O-U and N-U bonding, including the question of chelation, and (ii) how the strength of the axial U = O bonds of the uranyl moiety changes upon complexation. Our results reveal that the strength of the equatorial uranium-ligand interactions correlates with their covalent character and with charge donation from O and N lone pairs into the vacant uranium orbitals. We also found an inverse relationship between the covalent character of the equatorial ligand bonds and the strength of the axial uranium-oxygen bond. In summary, our study provides valuable data for a strategic modulation of N-substituted amide and Schiff base ligands towards the maximization of uranyl extraction.

METHOD

Quantum chemistry calculations were performed under the PBE0 level of theory, paired with the relativistic NESCau Hamiltonian, currently implemented in Cologne2020 (interfaced with Gaussian16). Wave functions were expanded in the cc-pwCVTZ-X2C basis set for uranium and Dunning's cc-pVTZ for the remaining atoms. For the bonding properties, we utilized the package LModeA in the local modes analyses, AIMALL in the QTAIM calculations, and NBO 7.0 for the NBO analyses.

Understanding the CO capture reaction through electronic structure analysis of four-membered-ring group-13/N- and B/group-15-based Lewis acid-base pairs

Incomplete combustion yields a significant byproduct, known for its high toxicity to humans: gas phase carbon monoxide (CO). This study utilized several advanced theoretical methods to examine the factors contributing to the activation energy involved in CO capture by a frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) and to forecast the potential success of the CO capture reaction. The current theoretical findings indicate that among the four-membered-ring Group-13/N-FLP and B/Group-15-FLP molecules, only the B/N-based FLP-type molecule effectively captures CO, considering both thermodynamics and kinetics. According to the results obtained through energy decomposition analysis-natural orbitals for chemical valence (EDA-NOCV), it can be concluded that the donor-acceptor (singlet-singlet) model, rather than the electron-sharing (triplet-triplet) model, effectively characterizes the electronic structures in the CO trapping reaction involving four-membered-ring G13/G15-FLPs. Theoretical findings, derived from EDA-NOCV and frontier molecular orbital theory, demonstrate that the CO capture reaction by G13/G15-FLP involves two distinct bonding interactions. The first interaction is characterized by FLP-to-CO forward bonding, with the lone pair of G15 (G13/G15-FLP) donating to the empty p-π* orbital of carbon (CO), which predominates. The second interaction involves CO-to-FLP backward bonding, where the empty σ* orbital of G13 (G13/G15-FLP) accepts the lone pair of carbon (CO), albeit to a lesser extent. In summary, our theoretical findings indicate that the G13-C and G15-C bonds in the G15/G15-TS species with a four-membered ring can be classified as two dative single bonds. The importance of the interaction between Lewis bases and CO surpasses that of the interaction between Lewis acids and CO. Theoretical evidences in this study demonstrate a linear connection between the G13-G15 bond length within the four-membered-ring G13/G15-FLP and the activation barrier linked to CO capture. The activation strain model analysis in this study suggests that the activation energy required for bond formation primarily depends on the geometric deformation energy of G13/G15-FLP in capturing CO. Our DFT investigation shows that Hammond's postulate is obeyed by the CO catching reaction of the four-membered-ring G13/N-FLP, meaning that an earlier transition state is associated with a lower activation barrier, but not with the CO catching reaction of the four-membered-ring B/G15-FLP.

Unraveling the effect of aromaticity for the dynamics of excited states of single benzene fluorophores

The photophysical properties of a series of recently synthesized single benzene fluorophores were investigated using ensemble density functional theory calculations. The energetic stability of the ground and excited state species were counterposed against the aromaticity index derived from local vibrational modes. It was found that the large Stokes shift of the fluorophores (up to ca. 5800 cm  - 1 ) originates from the effect of electron donating and electron withdrawing substituents rather than π -delocalization and related (anti-)aromaticity. On the basis of nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations, the absence of fluorescence from one of the regioisomers was explained by the occurrence of easily accessible S  1 /S  0 conical intersections below the vertical excitation energy level. It is demonstrated in the manuscript that the analysis of local mode force constants and the related aromaticity index represent a useful tool for the characterization of π -delocalization effects in π -conjugated compounds.

A multi-descriptor analysis of substituent effects on the structure and aromaticity of benzene derivatives: π-Conjugation versus charge effects

This work provides a detailed multi-component analysis of aromaticity in monosubstituted (X = CH3, CH 2 - , CH 2 + , NH2, NH-, NH+, OH, O-, and O+) and para-homodisubstituted (X = CH3, CH2, NH2, NH, OH, and O) benzene derivatives. We investigate the effects of substituents using single-reference (B3LYP/DFT) and multireference (CASSCF/MRCI) methods, focusing on structural (HOMA), vibrational (AI(vib)), topological (ELFπ), electronic (MCI), magnetic (NICS), and stability (S0-T1 splitting) properties. The findings reveal that appropriate π-electron-donating and π-electron-accepting substituents with suitable size and symmetry can interact with the π-system of the ring, significantly influencing π-electron delocalization. While the charge factor has a minimal impact on π-electron delocalization, the presence of a pz orbital capable of interacting with the π-electron delocalization is the primary factor leading to a deviation from the typical aromaticity characteristics observed in benzene.

Small molecule activation by sila/germa boryne species

The inability of p-block elements to participate in π-backbonding restricts them from activating small molecules like CO, H2 , and so forth. However, the development of the main group metallomimetics became a new pathway, where the main-group elements like boron can bind and activate small molecules like CO and H2 . The concept of the frustrated Lewis pair, Boron-Boron multiple bonds, and borylene are previously illustrated. Some of these reported classes of boron species can mimic the jobs of the metal complexes. Hence, we have theoretically studied the binding of CO/N2 molecules at B-center of elusive species like sila/germa boryne stabilized by donor base ligands (cAAC)BE(Me)(L), where E  Si, L  cAACMe , NHCMe , PMe3 , E  Ge, L  cAACMe and (NHCMe )BE(Me)(cAACMe )). The substitutional analogues of (cAACR )BSiR1 (cAAC) and E  P, L  cAACMe ) have been studied by density functional theory (DFT), natural bond orbital, QTAIM calculations and energy decomposition analysis (EDA) coupled with natural orbital for chemical valence (NOCV) analyses. The computed bond dissociation energy and inner stability analyses by the EDA-NOCV method showed that the CO molecule can bind at the B-center of the above-mentioned species due to stronger σ-donor ability while binding of N2 has been theoretically predicted to be weak. The energy barrier for the CO binding is estimated to be 13-14 kcal/mol by transition state calculation. The change of partial triple bond character to single bond nature of the BSi bond and the bending of CBSi bond angle of sila-boryne species are the reason for the activation energy. Our study reveals the ability of such species to bind and activate the CO molecule to mimic the transition metal-containing complexes. We have additionally shown that binding of Fe(CO)4 and Ni(CO)3 is feasible at Si-center after binding of CO at the B-center.

Mechanistic Insights into S-Depalmitolyse Activity of Cln5 Protein Linked to Neurodegeneration and Batten Disease: A QM/MM Study

Ceroid lipofuscinosis neuronal protein 5 (Cln5) is encoded by the CLN5 gene. The genetic variants of this gene are associated with the CLN5 form of Batten disease. Recently, the first crystal structure of Cln5 was reported. Cln5 shows cysteine palmitoyl thioesterase S-depalmitoylation activity, which was explored via fluorescent emission spectroscopy utilizing the fluorescent probe DDP-5. In this work, the mechanism of the reaction between Cln5 and DDP-5 was studied computationally by applying a QM/MM methodology at the ωB97X-D/6-31G(d,p):AMBER level. The results of our study clearly demonstrate the critical role of the catalytic triad Cys280-His166-Glu183 in S-depalmitoylation activity. This is evidenced through a comparison of the pathways catalyzed by the Cys280-His166-Glu183 triad and those with only Cys280 involved. The computed reaction barriers are in agreement with the catalytic efficiency. The calculated Gibb's free-energy profile suggests that S-depalmitoylation is a rate-limiting step compared to the preceding S-palmitoylation, with barriers of 26.1 and 25.3 kcal/mol, respectively. The energetics were complemented by monitoring the fluctuations in the electron density distribution through NBO charges and bond strength alterations via local mode stretching force constants during the catalytic pathways. This comprehensive protocol led to a more holistic picture of the reaction mechanism at the atomic level. It forms the foundation for future studies on the effects of gene mutations on both the S-palmitoylation and S-depalmitoylation steps, providing valuable data for the further development of enzyme replacement therapy, which is currently the only FDA-approved therapy for childhood neurodegenerative diseases, including Batten disease.

Homoleptic Transition Metal Carbonyl Cations: Synthetic Approaches, Characterization and Follow-Up Chemistry

ConspectusCarbon monoxide, CO, is one of the most important ligands in organometallic chemistry. It is an excellent π-acceptor and a moderate σ-donor. Therefore, most of the known transition metal carbonyls (TMCs) exhibit a zerovalent or even negative metal oxidation state (OS) of up to -4. However, given the right conditions, the carbonyl ligand also forms homoleptic cationic complexes with one or more transition metal atoms, the transition metal carbonyl cations (TMCCs), known with an OS of up to +3. Despite their long-standing history upon discovery of the first [M(CO)6]+ examples (M = Mn, Tc, Re) by E. O. Fischer in 1962 as well as their very fundamental nature, it took until the 1990s for the scope to be widened by Aubke, Strauss and Willner. Yet, many potential TMCC entries known from gas-phase mass spectrometry work remained unknown on preparative grounds. This is due to their high reactivity, which puts scientists to new challenges and encourages the development of suitable solvents, anions and oxidants, to cope with the demands of these fundamental salts─later referred to as pseudo-gas-phase conditions and innocent deelectronators and solvents.Hence, the utilization of extremely weakly coordinating perfluorinated alkoxyaluminates [Al(ORF)4]- and [F{Al(ORF)3}2]- (ORF = -OC(CF3)3) in combination with the polar but non- or weakly coordinating innocent solvents 1,2-difluorobenzene (oDFB) and 1,2,3,4-tetrafluorobenzene (TFB) yielded the first TMCC salts containing heptacoordinate [M(CO)7]+ (M = Nb, Ta) as well as paramagnetic [M(CO)6]+· (M = Cr, Mo, W) or [Ni(CO)4]+·. However, the use of typical inorganic oxidants Ag+, [NO]+ and Ag+/0.5 I2 regularly led to unwanted side reactions. For example, the Lewis acidic silver(I) cations form Lewis pairs with various Lewis basic TMCs yielding partly clustered [Agx{TMC}y]x+ complex salts, while nitrosonium cations may substitute for carbonyl ligands, forming [M(CO)x-1(NO)]+ complexes. The synergistic oxidizing reagent Ag+/0.5 X2 can add halonium ions X+ to the TMCs (X = Cl, Br, I). This prevented the synthesis of univalent group 8 TMCC salts. Yet, the application of radical cation salts of perfluorinated arenes as innocent deelectronators finally yielded salts of [Fe(CO)5]+· and [M3(CO)14]2+ (M = Ru, Os).TMCC salts are excellent starting materials, and the reaction of [Co(CO)5]+ and [Ni(CO)4]+· with benzene led to the previously unknown bis(benzene) sandwich complexes [Co(benzene)2]+ and [Ni(benzene)2]+·. Under the right conditions, even the very weakly bound oDFB-complex salts with [M(oDFB)2]+ (M = Co, Ni) cations form, useful as naked metal(I) synthons and for small-molecule activation.

Extreme NMR shielding in fluoro-nitrogen cations

The structure and NMR shielding of a set of N-F containing cations is reported to near-quantitative accuracy from extensive ab initio calculations. Currently, the shortest experimentally confirmed N-F bond is 1.2461(10) Å in NNF+, however CCSD(T)-F12b/cc-pVQZ-F12 optimised geometries suggest that even shorter N-F bonds are possible for both monocations (1.236 Å, HNF+) and dications (1.098 Å, NF2+). NMR shielding constants have been calculated in a composite manner with individual components from coupled-cluster expansions up to CCSDTQP and basis sets up to aug-cc-pCV8Z, together with vibrational and relativistic corrections. 15N and 19F NMR chemical shifts correlate well with available experimental data. Extreme 19F chemical shifts are predicted for HNF+ (1628.9 ppm) and NH2F2+ (1298.0 ppm), which are by far the largest 19F chemical shifts ever reported and well outside the known range of +865 ppm (F2O2) to -448 ppm (ClF). The 15N chemical shift of -1283.07 ppm in HNF+ is similarly extreme, being well outside the known range of 15N chemical shifts of -730 to 260 ppm (CH3NO2 reference). This work highlights the application of state-of-the-art theoretical techniques, and provides accurate NMR properties of both isolated and yet unknown N-F cations, which can serve to guide and supplement NMR experimentation.

Identification of Material Dimensionality Based on Force Constant Analysis

Identification of low-dimensional structural units from the bulk atomic structure is a widely used approach for discovering new low-dimensional materials with new properties and applications. Such analysis is usually based solely on bond-length heuristics, whereas an analysis based on bond strengths would be physically more justified. Here, we study dimensionality classification based on the interatomic force constants of a structure with different approaches for selecting the bonded atoms. The implemented approaches are applied to the existing database of first-principles calculated force constants with a large variety of materials, and the results are analyzed by comparing them to those of several bond-length-based classification methods. Depending on the approach, they can either reproduce results from bond-length-based methods or provide complementary information. As an example of the latter, we managed to identify new non-van der Waals two-dimensional material candidates.

Spectroscopic Constants and Anharmonic Vibrational Frequencies of C(O)OC, c-C2O2 and Their Silicon-Containing Analogues

Comets are likely to contain various carbon oxide molecules potentially including C(O)OC and c-C2O2 on their surfaces and comae, as well as their silicon-substituted analogues possibly playing a role in the formation of interstellar dust grains. In this work, high-level quantum chemical data are provided to support such potential future astrophysical detection through the generation of predicted rovibrational data. Laboratory-based chemistry would also benefit from such aforementioned computational benchmarking considering these molecules' historic computational and experimental elusiveness. Coupled-cluster singles, doubles, and perturbative triples, the F12b formalism, and the cc-pCVTZ-F12 basis set garner the rapid, yet highly trusted F12-TcCR level of theory leveraged presently. This current work points to all four molecules' strong IR activity, coupled with large intensities, thus suggesting the potential for JWST detection. Although Si(O)OSi possesses a permanent dipole moment significantly larger than those of the other molecules of present interest, the significant abundance of the potential precursor carbon monoxide suggests that the dicarbon dioxide molecules may yet be observable in the microwave region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Thus, this present work details the likely existence and detectability of these four cyclic molecules, providing updated implications compared to previous work performed both experimentally and computationally.

Molybdenum carbonyl assisted reductive tetramerization of CO by activated magnesium(i) compounds: squarate dianion vs. metallo-ketene formation

Reactions of a dimagnesium(i) compound, [{(^DipNacnac)Mg}₂] (^DipNacnac = [HC(MeCNDip)₂]^-, Dip = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl), pre-activated by coordination with simple Lewis bases (4-dimethylaminopyridine, DMAP; or TMC, :C(MeNCMe)₂), with 1 atmosphere of CO in the presence of one equivalent of Mo(CO)₆ at room temperature, led to the reductive tetramerisation of the diatomic molecule. When the reactions were carried out at room temperature, there is an apparent competition between the formation of magnesium squarate, [{(^DipNacnac)Mg}{cyclo-(κ⁴-C₄O₄)}{μ-Mg(^DipNacnac)}]₂, and magnesium metallo-ketene products, [{(^DipNacnac)Mg}[μ-O[double bond, length as m-dash]CC{Mo(CO)₅}C(O)CO₂]{Mg(D)(^DipNacnac)}], which are not inter-convertible. Repeating the reactions at 80 °C led to the selective formation of the magnesium squarate, implying that this is the thermodynamic product. In an analogous reaction, in which THF is the Lewis base, only the metallo-ketene complex, [{(^DipNacnac)Mg}[μ-O[double bond, length as m-dash]CC{Mo(CO)₅}C(O)CO₂]{Mg(THF)(^DipNacnac)}] is formed at room temperature, while a complex product mixture is obtained at elevated temperature. In contrast, treatment of a 1 : 1 mixture of the guanidinato magnesium(i) complex, [(Priso)Mg-Mg(Priso)] (Priso = [Prⁱ₂NC(NDip)₂]^-), and Mo(CO)₆, with CO gas in a benzene/THF solution, gave a low yield of the squarate complex, [{(Priso)(THF)Mg}{cyclo-(κ⁴-C₄O₄)}{μ-Mg(THF)(Priso)}]₂, at 80 °C. Computational analyses of the electronic structure of squarate and metallo-ketene product types corroborate the bonding proposed from experimental data, for the C₄O₄ fragments of these systems.

Biological nitrogen fixation in theory, practice, and reality: a perspective on the molybdenum nitrogenase system

Nitrogenase is the sole enzyme responsible for the ATP-dependent conversion of atmospheric dinitrogen into the bioavailable form of ammonia (NH₃ ), making this protein essential for the maintenance of the nitrogen cycle and thus life itself. Despite the widespread use of the Haber-Bosch process to industrially produce NH₃ , biological nitrogen fixation still accounts for half of the bioavailable nitrogen on Earth. An important feature of nitrogenase is that it operates under physiological conditions, where the equilibrium strongly favours ammonia production. This biological, multielectron reduction is a complex catalytic reaction that has perplexed scientists for decades. In this review, we explore the current understanding of the molybdenum nitrogenase system based on experimental and computational research, as well as the limitations of the crystallographic, spectroscopic, and computational techniques employed. Finally, essential outstanding questions regarding the nitrogenase system will be highlighted alongside suggestions for future experimental and computational work to elucidate this essential yet elusive process.

Dihydrogen Bonding-Seen through the Eyes of Vibrational Spectroscopy

In this work, we analyzed five groups of different dihydrogen bonding interactions and hydrogen clusters with an H3+ kernel utilizing the local vibrational mode theory, developed by our group, complemented with the Quantum Theory of Atoms-in-Molecules analysis to assess the strength and nature of the dihydrogen bonds in these systems. We could show that the intrinsic strength of the dihydrogen bonds investigated is primarily related to the protonic bond as opposed to the hydridic bond; thus, this should be the region of focus when designing dihydrogen bonded complexes with a particular strength. We could also show that the popular discussion of the blue/red shifts of dihydrogen bonding based on the normal mode frequencies is hampered from mode-mode coupling and that a blue/red shift discussion based on local mode frequencies is more meaningful. Based on the bond analysis of the H3+(H2)n systems, we conclude that the bond strength in these crystal-like structures makes them interesting for potential hydrogen storage applications.

Papaya Leaf Extracts as Potential Dengue Treatment: An In-Silico Study

Dengue fever (DF), dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF), and dengue shock syndrome (DSS) cause serious public health problems, with nearly 390 million people affected and 20,000 deaths per year in tropical and subtropical countries. Despite numerous attempts, no antiviral drug or vaccine is currently available to combat the manifestation. The challenge of discovering an efficient vaccine is enhanced by the surplus presence of efficient vectors and drug resistance from the virus. For centuries, papaya (Carica papaya) extracts have been traditionally used to treat DF, DHF, and DSS. In the present study, we systematically investigated seven compounds isolated from papaya leaf extract with regard to their potential as inhibitors for non-structural (NS) proteins, NS3 and NS5, which play a crucial role in viral RNA replication. The computational tools applied stretched across classical molecular docking, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and SwissADME used to calculate binding affinities; binding free energies; Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, and Excretion (ADME); and drug-likeness properties, thus, identifying Kaempferol, Chlorogenic acid, and Quercetin as potential candidates, with Kaempferol and Quercetin scoring best. Therefore, for the Kaempferol and Quercetin complexes, hybrid quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical (QM/MM) geometry and frequency calculations were performed, followed by the local mode analysis developed in our group to quantify Kaempferol-NS and Quercetin-NS hydrogen bonding. Given the non-toxic nature and the wide availability of the Kaempferol and Quercetin papaya extract in almost all of the susceptible regions, and our results showing high NS3 and NS5 binding affinities and energies, strong hydrogen bonding with both NS3 and NS5, and excellent ADME properties, we suggest Kaempferol and Quercetin as a strong NS3 and NS5 inhibitor to be further investigated in vitro.

Main group cyanides: from hydrogen cyanide to cyanido-complexes

Homoleptic cyanide compounds exist of almost all main group elements. While the alkali metals and alkaline earth metals form cyanide salts, the cyanides of the lighter main group elements occur mainly as covalent compounds. This review gives an overview of the status quo of main group element cyanides and cyanido complexes. Information about syntheses are included as well as applications, special substance properties, bond lengths, spectroscopic characteristics and computations. Cyanide chemistry is presented mainly from the field of inorganic chemistry, but aspects of chemical biology and astrophysics are also discussed in relation to cyano compounds.

A polymeric nitrogen N[Formula: see text]-N[Formula: see text] system with enhanced stability at low pressure

Postulated in 1992 and synthesized in 2004 above 2000 K and 110 GPa, the singly-bonded nitrogen cubic gauche crystal (cg-PN) is still considered to be the ultimate high energy density material (HEDM). The search however has continued for a method to synthesize cg-PN at more ambient conditions or find HEDMs which can be synthesized at lower pressure and temperature. Here, using ab initio evolutionary crystal prediction techniques, a simpler nitrogen-based molecular crystal consisting of N[Formula: see text] and N[Formula: see text] molecules is revealed to be a more favorable polynitrogen at lower pressures. The energetic gain of  534 meV/atom over cg-PN and  138 meV/atom over the N[Formula: see text] molecular crystal at zero pressure makes the N[Formula: see text]-N[Formula: see text] system more appealing. Dynamical and mechanical stabilities are investigated at 5 and 0 GPa, and vibrational frequencies are assessed for its Raman and IR spectra. The prospects of an experimental synthesis of the N[Formula: see text]-N[Formula: see text] polymeric system compared to cg-PN is higher because the C[Formula: see text] symmetry of N[Formula: see text] within this crystal would be easier to target from the readily available N[Formula: see text] azides and the observed N[Formula: see text] and N[Formula: see text] radicals.

Mechanistic Details of the Sharpless Epoxidation of Allylic Alcohols—A Combined URVA and Local Mode Study

In this work, we investigated the catalytic effects of a Sharpless dimeric titanium (IV)–tartrate–diester catalyst on the epoxidation of allylalcohol with methyl–hydroperoxide considering four different orientations of the reacting species coordinated at the titanium atom (reactions R1–R4) as well as a model for the non-catalyzed reaction (reaction R0). As major analysis tools, we applied the URVA (Unified Reaction Valley Approach) and LMA (Local Mode Analysis), both being based on vibrational spectroscopy and complemented by a QTAIM analysis of the electron density calculated at the DFT level of theory. The energetics of each reaction were recalculated at the DLPNO-CCSD(T) level of theory. The URVA curvature profiles identified the important chemical events of all five reactions as peroxide OO bond cleavage taking place before the TS (i.e., accounting for the energy barrier) and epoxide CO bond formation together with rehybridization of the carbon atoms of the targeted CC double bond after the TS. The energy decomposition into reaction phase contribution phases showed that the major effect of the catalyst is the weakening of the OO bond to be broken and replacement of OH bond breakage in the non-catalyzed reaction by an energetically more favorable TiO bond breakage. LMA performed at all stationary points rounded up the investigation (i) quantifying OO bond weakening of the oxidizing peroxide upon coordination at the metal atom, (ii) showing that a more synchronous formation of the new CO epoxide bonds correlates with smaller bond strength differences between these bonds, and (iii) elucidating the different roles of the three TiO bonds formed between catalyst and reactants and their interplay as orchestrated by the Sharpless catalyst. We hope that this article will inspire the computational community to use URVA complemented with LMA in the future as an efficient mechanistic tool for the optimization and fine-tuning of current Sharpless catalysts and for the design new of catalysts for epoxidation reactions.

Bonding in Nitrile Photo-dissociating Ruthenium Drug Candidates --A Local Vibrational Mode Study

In this work, we investigated bonding features 15 ruthenium complexes of the type [Ru(tpy)(L)-(CH3CN)]n+, containing the tridentate tpy ligand (tpy = 2,2':6',2'--terpyridine) and various bidentate ancillary ligands, 12 compounds originally synthesized by Loftus et al. (J. Phys. Chem. C 123, 10291-10299 (2019)) complemented with three additional complexes. The main focus of our work was to relate these local features to the experimental data of Loftus et al. which assess the efficiency of nitrile release in an indirect way via observed quantum yields for ruthenium water association after nitrile release. As a tool to quantitatively assess Ru-NC and Ru-L bonding we utilized the local vibrational mode analysis complemented by the topological analysis of the electron density and the natural bond orbital analysis. Interestingly, the stronger Ru-NC bonds have the greater observed quantum yields, leading to the conclusion that the observed quantum yields are a result of a complex interplay of several processes excluding a direct relationship between QY and Ru-NC or Ru-L bond strengths. We identified the ST splitting as one of the key players and not the Ru-NC bond strength, as one may have thought. In summary, this work has presented a modern computational tool set for the investigation of bonding features applied to nitrile photo-dissociating ruthenium drug candidates forming a valuable basis for future design and fine tuning of nitrile releasing ruthenium compounds, as well as for the understanding of how local properties affect overall experimental outcomes.

Uranium: The Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Beyond

This review summarizes the recent developments regarding the use of uranium as nuclear fuel, including recycling and health aspects, elucidated from a chemical point of view, i.e., emphasizing the rich uranium coordination chemistry, which has also raised interest in using uranium compounds in synthesis and catalysis. A number of novel uranium coordination features are addressed, such the emerging number of U(II) complexes and uranium nitride complexes as a promising class of materials for more efficient and safer nuclear fuels. The current discussion about uranium triple bonds is addressed by quantum chemical investigations using local vibrational mode force constants as quantitative bond strength descriptors based on vibrational spectroscopy. The local mode analysis of selected uranium nitrides, N≡U≡N, U≡N, N≡U=NH and N≡U=O, could confirm and quantify, for the first time, that these molecules exhibit a UN triple bond as hypothesized in the literature. We hope that this review will inspire the community interested in uranium chemistry and will serve as an incubator for fruitful collaborations between theory and experimentation in exploring the wealth of uranium chemistry.

BF3–Catalyzed Diels–Alder Reaction between Butadiene and Methyl Acrylate in Aqueous Solution—An URVA and Local Vibrational Mode Study

In this study we investigate the Diels–Alder reaction between methyl acrylate and butadiene, which is catalyzed by BF3 Lewis acid in explicit water solution, using URVA and Local Mode Analysis as major tools complemented with NBO, electron density and ring puckering analyses. We considered four different starting orientations of methyl acrylate and butadiene, which led to 16 DA reactions in total. In order to isolate the catalytic effects of the BF3 catalyst and those of the water environment and exploring how these effects are synchronized, we systematically compared the non-catalyzed reaction in gas phase and aqueous solution with the catalyzed reaction in gas phase and aqueous solution. Gas phase studies were performed at the B3LYP/6-311+G(2d,p) level of theory and studies in aqueous solution were performed utilizing a QM/MM approach at the B3LYP/6-311+G(2d,p)/AMBER level of theory. The URVA results revealed reaction path curvature profiles with an overall similar pattern for all 16 reactions showing the same sequence of CC single bond formation for all of them. In contrast to the parent DA reaction with symmetric substrates causing a synchronous bond formation process, here, first the new CC single bond on the CH2 side of methyl acrylate is formed followed by the CC bond at the ester side. As for the parent DA reaction, both bond formation events occur after the TS, i.e., they do not contribute to the energy barrier. What determines the barrier is the preparation process for CC bond formation, including the approach diene and dienophile, CC bond length changes and, in particular, rehybridization of the carbon atoms involved in the formation of the cyclohexene ring. This process is modified by both the BF3 catalyst and the water environment, where both work in a hand-in-hand fashion leading to the lowest energy barrier of 9.06 kcal/mol found for the catalyzed reaction R1 in aqueous solution compared to the highest energy barrier of 20.68 kcal/mol found for the non-catalyzed reaction R1 in the gas phase. The major effect of the BF3 catalyst is the increased mutual polarization and the increased charge transfer between methyl acrylate and butadiene, facilitating the approach of diene and dienophile and the pyramidalization of the CC atoms involved in the ring formation, which leads to a lowering of the activation energy. The catalytic effect of water solution is threefold. The polar environment leads also to increased polarization and charge transfer between the reacting species, similar as in the case of the BF3 catalyst, although to a smaller extend. More important is the formation of hydrogen bonds with the reaction complex, which are stronger for the TS than for the reactant, thus stabilizing the TS which leads to a further reduction of the activation energy. As shown by the ring puckering analysis, the third effect of water is space confinement of the reacting partners, conserving the boat form of the six-member ring from the entrance to the exit reaction channel. In summary, URVA combined with LMA has led to a clearer picture on how both BF3 catalyst and aqueous environment in a synchronized effort lower the reaction barrier. These new insights will serve to further fine-tune the DA reaction of methyl acrylate and butadiene and DA reactions in general.

Capturing Individual Hydrogen Bond Strengths in Ices via Periodic Local Vibrational Mode Theory: Beyond the Lattice Energy Picture

Local stretching force constants derived from periodic local vibrational modes at the vdW-DF2 density functional level have been employed to quantify the intrinsic hydrogen bond strength of 16 ice polymorphs, ices Ih, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, XI, XII, XIII, XIV, XV, XVII, and XIX, that are stable under ambient to elevated pressures. Based on this characterization on 1820 hydrogen bonds, relationships between local stretching force constants and structural parameters such as hydrogen bond length and angle were identified. Moreover, different bond strength distributions, from uniform to inhomogeneous, were observed for the 16 ices and could be explained in relation to different local structural elements within ices, that is, rings, that consist of different hydrogen bond types. In addition, criteria for the classification of hydrogen bonds as strong, intermediate, and weak were introduced. The latter was used to explore a different dimension of the water-ice phase diagram. These findings will provide important guidelines for assessing the credibility of new ice structures.

Classical Electrostatics Remains the Driving Force for Interanion Hydrogen and Halogen Bonding

Interanion hydrogen bonding (IAHB) and halogen bonding (IAXB) have emerged as a counterintuitive linker in a range of fascinating applications. Despite the overall repulsive (positive) binding energy, anions are trapped in a local minimum with its corresponding transition state (TS) preventing dissociation. In other words, the adduct of anions is metastable. Seemingly, the electrostatic paradigm and force field description of hydrogen/halogen bonding (HB/XB) are challenged, because of the preconceived Coulombic repulsion. Aiming at an insightful understanding of these interanion phenomena, we employed the energy decomposition approach based on the block-localized wavefunction method (BLW-ED) to investigate a series of exemplary interanion complexes. As expected, the key distinction from the conventional HB/XB lies in the electrostatic interaction, which is not increasingly repulsive as anions gradually approach to each other. Rather, there is a Coulombic barrier at a certain point. After this point, the electrostatic repulsion diminishes with the decreasing distance between anions. Differently, other energy components vary monotonically just like in conventional cases. The nonmonotonic characteristic of the electrostatic interaction in interanion complexes was reproduced using the multipole expansion in AMOEBA polarizable force field in which the state-specified atomic multipoles were adopted. This suggests that the nonmonotonicity can be well interpreted by classical electrostatic theory and there is no conceptual difference between conventional HB/XB and IAHB/IAXB. The stability of IAHB/IAXB depends on the competition between the local attractive HB/XB and the global Coulombic repulsion of net charges, though there is cooperativity between these two contrasting forces. This concise model was supported by the attractive IAHB/IAXB in modified molecular capsules, which exhibit strong quadruple HB/XBs and a considerable distance between charged substituents.

Molybdenum-Mediated N2 -Splitting and Functionalization in the Presence of a Coordinated Alkyne

A new [PCCP]‐coordinated molybdenum platform comprising a coordinated alkyne was employed for the cleavage of molecular dinitrogen. The coordinated η²‐alkyne was left unaffected during this reduction. DFT calculations suggest that the reaction proceeds via an initially generated terminal N₂‐complex, which is converted to a dinuclear μ‐(η¹:η¹)‐N₂‐bridged intermediate prior to N−N bond cleavage. Protonation, alkylation and acylation of the resulting molybdenum nitrido complex led to the corresponding N‐functionalized imido complexes. Upon oxidation of the N‐acylated imido derivative in MeCN, a fumaronitrile fragment was built up via C−C coupling of MeCN to afford a dinuclear molybdenum complex. The key finding that the strong N≡N bond may be cleaved in the presence of a weaker, but spatially constrained C≡C bond contradicts the widespread paradigm that coordinated alkynes are in general more reactive than gaseous N₂.

Bent and Linear {CoNO}8 Entities: Structure and Bonding in a Prototypic Class of Nitrosyls

Among the isoelectronic ligands CN^-, CO, and NO⁺, an oblique bonding to the metal is well-established for the nitrosyl ligand, with M-N-O angles down to ≈120°. In the last decades, the nitrosyl community got into the habit of addressing a bent-bonded nitrosyl ligand as ¹NO^-. Thus, because various redox forms of a nitrosyl ligand seem to exist, the ligand is considered to be "noninnocent" because of the obvious ambiguity of an oxidation state (OS) assignment of the ligand and metal. Among the bent-bonded species, the low-spin {CoNO}⁸ class is prototypic. From this class, some 20 new nitrosyl compounds, the X-ray structure determinations of which comply with strict quality criteria, were analyzed with respect to the OS issue. As a result, the effective OS method shows a low-spin d⁸ Co^I-NO⁺ couple instead of a negative OS of the ligand at the BP86/def2-TZVP (+D3, +CPCM with infinite permittivity) level of theory. The same holds for some new members of the linear subclass of {CoNO}⁸ compounds. For all compounds, a largely invariable "real" charge of ≈ -0.3 e was obtained from population analyses. All of these electron-rich d⁸ species strive to manage Pauli repulsion between the metal electrons and the lone pair at the nitrosyl's nitrogen atom, with the bending of the CoNO unit as the most frequent escape.

On the formation of CN bonds in Titan's atmosphere-a unified reaction valley approach study

In this work, we investigated the formation of protonated hydrogen cyanide HCNH⁺ and methylene amine cation CH[Formula: see text] (both identified in Titan's upper atmosphere) from three different pathways which stem from the interaction between CH₄ and N⁺(³P). As a mechanistic tool, we used the Unified Reaction Valley Approach (URVA) complemented with the Local Mode Analysis (LMA) assessing the strength of the CN bonds formed in these reactions. Our URVA studies could provide a comprehensive overview on bond formation/cleavage processes relevant to the specific mechanism of eight reactions R1- R8 that occur across the three pathways. In addition, we could explain the formation of CH[Formula: see text] and the appearance of HCNH⁺ and CHNH[Formula: see text] along these paths. Although only smaller molecules are involved in these reactions including isomerization, hydrogen atom abstraction, and hydrogen molecule capture, we found a number of interesting features, such as roaming in reaction R3 or the primary interaction of H₂ with the carbon atom in HCNH⁺ in reaction R8 followed by migration of one of the H₂ hydrogen atoms to the nitrogen which is more cost effective than breaking the HH bond first; a feature often found in catalysis. In all cases, charge transfer between carbon and nitrogen could be identified as a driving force for the CN bond formation. As revealed by LMA, the CN bonds formed in reactions R1-R8 cover a broad bond strength range from very weak to very strong, with the CN bond in protonated hydrogen cyanide HCNH⁺ identified as the strongest of all molecules investigated in this work. Our study demonstrates the large potential of both URVA and LMA to shed new light into these extraterrestrial reactions to help better understand prebiotic processes as well as develop guidelines for future investigations involving areas of complex interstellar chemistry. In particular, the formation of CN bonds as a precursor to the extraterrestrial formation of amino acids will be the focus of future investigations. Assessing the Intrinsic Strengths of Ion–Solvent and Solvent–Solvent Interactions for Hydrated Mg2+ Clusters

Information resulting from a comprehensive investigation into the intrinsic strengths of hydrated divalent magnesium clusters is useful for elucidating the role of aqueous solvents on the Mg2+ ion, which can be related to those in bulk aqueous solution. However, the intrinsic Mg–O and intermolecular hydrogen bond interactions of hydrated magnesium ion clusters have yet to be quantitatively measured. In this work, we investigated a set of 17 hydrated divalent magnesium clusters by means of local vibrational mode force constants calculated at the ωB97X-D/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory, where the nature of the ion–solvent and solvent–solvent interactions were interpreted from topological electron density analysis and natural population analysis. We found the intrinsic strength of inner shell Mg–O interactions for [Mg(H2O)n]2+ (n = 1–6) clusters to relate to the electron density at the bond critical point in Mg–O bonds. From the application of a secondary hydration shell to [Mg(H2O)n]2+ (n = 5–6) clusters, stronger Mg–O interactions were observed to correspond to larger instances of charge transfer between the lp(O) orbitals of the inner hydration shell and the unfilled valence shell of Mg. As the charge transfer between water molecules of the first and second solvent shell increased, so did the strength of their intermolecular hydrogen bonds (HBs). Cumulative local vibrational mode force constants of explicitly solvated Mg2+, having an outer hydration shell, reveal a CN of 5, rather than a CN of 6, to yield slightly more stable configurations in some instances. However, the cumulative local mode stretching force constants of implicitly solvated Mg2+ show the six-coordinated cluster to be the most stable. These results show that such intrinsic bond strength measures for Mg–O and HBs offer an effective way for determining the coordination number of hydrated magnesium ion clusters.

Hydrogen Bonding in Natural and Unnatural Base Pairs-A Local Vibrational Mode Study

In this work hydrogen bonding in a diverse set of 36 unnatural and the three natural Watson Crick base pairs adenine (A)-thymine (T), adenine (A)-uracil (U) and guanine (G)-cytosine (C) was assessed utilizing local vibrational force constants derived from the local mode analysis, originally introduced by Konkoli and Cremer as a unique bond strength measure based on vibrational spectroscopy. The local mode analysis was complemented by the topological analysis of the electronic density and the natural bond orbital analysis. The most interesting findings of our study are that (i) hydrogen bonding in Watson Crick base pairs is not exceptionally strong and (ii) the N-H⋯N is the most favorable hydrogen bond in both unnatural and natural base pairs while O-H⋯N/O bonds are the less favorable in unnatural base pairs and not found at all in natural base pairs. In addition, the important role of non-classical C-H⋯N/O bonds for the stabilization of base pairs was revealed, especially the role of C-H⋯O bonds in Watson Crick base pairs. Hydrogen bonding in Watson Crick base pairs modeled in the DNA via a QM/MM approach showed that the DNA environment increases the strength of the central N-H⋯N bond and the C-H⋯O bonds, and at the same time decreases the strength of the N-H⋯O bond. However, the general trends observed in the gas phase calculations remain unchanged. The new methodology presented and tested in this work provides the bioengineering community with an efficient design tool to assess and predict the type and strength of hydrogen bonding in artificial base pairs.

Halogen Bonding Involving I2 and d8 Transition-Metal Pincer Complexes

We systematically investigated iodine–metal and iodine–iodine bonding in van Koten’s pincer complex and 19 modifications changing substituents and/or the transition metal with a PBE0–D3(BJ)/aug–cc–pVTZ/PP(M,I) model chemistry. As a novel tool for the quantitative assessment of the iodine–metal and iodine–iodine bond strength in these complexes we used the local mode analysis, originally introduced by Konkoli and Cremer, complemented with NBO and Bader’s QTAIM analyses. Our study reveals the major electronic effects in the catalytic activity of the M–I–I non-classical three-center bond of the pincer complex, which is involved in the oxidative addition of molecular iodine I2 to the metal center. According to our investigations the charge transfer from the metal to the σ* antibonding orbital of the I–I bond changes the 3c–4e character of the M–I–I three-center bond, which leads to weakening of the iodine I–I bond and strengthening of the metal–iodine M–I bond, facilitating in this way the oxidative addition of I2 to the metal. The charge transfer can be systematically modified by substitution at different places of the pincer complex and by different transition metals, changing the strength of both the M–I and the I2 bonds. We also modeled for the original pincer complex how solvents with different polarity influence the 3c–4e character of the M–I–I bond. Our results provide new guidelines for the design of pincer complexes with specific iodine–metal bond strengths and introduce the local vibrational mode analysis as an efficient tool to assess the bond strength in complexes.

Exceptionally Long Covalent CC Bonds-A Local Vibrational Mode Study

For decades one has strived to synthesize a compound with the longest covalent C−C bond applying predominantly steric hindrance and/or strain to achieve this goal. On the other hand electronic effects have been added to the repertoire, such as realized in the electron deficient ethane radical cation in its D3d form. Recently, negative hyperconjugation effects occurring in diamino-o-carborane analogs such as di-N,N-dimethylamino-o-carborane have been held responsible for their long C−C bonds. In this work we systematically analyzed CC bonding in a diverse set of 53 molecules including clamped bonds, highly sterically strained complexes such as diamondoid dimers, electron deficient species, and di-N,N-dimethylamino-o-carborane to cover the whole spectrum of possibilities for elongating a covalent C−C bond to the limit. As a quantitative intrinsic bond strength measure, we utilized local vibrational CC stretching force constants ka(CC) and related bond strength orders BSO n(CC), computed at the ωB97X-D/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory. Our systematic study quantifies for the first time that whereas steric hindrance and/or strain definitely elongate a C−C bond, electronic effects can lead to even longer and weaker C−C bonds. Within our set of molecules the electron deficient ethane radical cation, in D3d symmetry, acquires the longest C−C bond with a length of 1.935 Å followed by di-N,N-dimethylamino-o-carborane with a bond length of 1.930 Å. However, the C−C bond in di-N,N-dimethylamino-o-carborane is the weakest with a BSO n value of 0.209 compared to 0.286 for the ethane radical cation; another example that the longer bond is not always the weaker bond. Based on our findings we provide new guidelines for the general characterization of CC bonds based on local vibrational CC stretching force constants and for future design of compounds with long C−C bonds.

Comment on "Exploring nature and predicting strength of hydrogen bonds: A correlation analysis between atoms-in-molecules descriptors, binding energies, and energy components of symmetry-adapted perturbation theory"

We evaluate the correlation between binding energy (BE) and electron density ρ(r) at the bond critical point for 28 neutral hydrogen bonds, recently reported by Emamian and co-workers (J. Comput. Chem., 2019, 40, 2868). As an efficient tool, we use local stretching force constant k HB a derived from the local vibrational mode theory of Konkoli and Cremer. We compare the physical nature of BE versus k HB a , and provide an important explanation for cases with significant deviation in the BE- k HB a relation as well as in the BE-ρ(r) correlation. We also show that care has to be taken when different hydrogen bond strength measures are compared. The BE is a cumulative hydrogen bond strength measure while k HB a is a local measure of hydrogen bond strength covering different aspects of bonding. A simplified and unified description of hydrogen bonding is not always possible and needs an in-depth understanding of the systems involved.

Local vibrational mode analysis of ion-solvent and solvent-solvent interactions for hydrated Ca2+ clusters

Hydrated calcium ion clusters have received considerable attention due to their essential role in biological processes such as bone development, hormone regulation, blood coagulation, and neuronal signaling. To better understand the biological role of the cation, the interactions between the Ca²⁺ ions and water molecules have been frequently investigated. However, a quantitative measure for the intrinsic Ca-O (ion-solvent) and intermolecular hydrogen bond (solvent-solvent) interactions has been missing so far. Here, we report a topological electron density analysis and a natural population analysis to analyze the nature of these interactions for a set of 14 hydrated calcium clusters via local mode stretching force constants obtained at the ωB97X-D/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory. The results revealed that the strength of inner Ca-O interactions for Ca(H₂O)_n ²⁺ (n = 1-8) clusters correlates with the electron density. The application of a second hydration shell to Ca(H₂O)_n ²⁺ (n = 6-8) clusters resulted in stronger Ca-O interactions where a larger electron charge transfer between lp(O) of the first hydration shell and the lower valence of Ca prevailed. The strength of the intermolecular hydrogen bonds, formed between the first and second hydration shells, became stronger when the charge transfers between hydrogen bond (HB) donors and HB acceptors were enhanced. From the local mode stretching force constants of implicitly and explicitly solvated Ca²⁺, we found the six-coordinated cluster to possess the strongest stabilizations, and these results prove that the intrinsic bond strength measures for Ca-O and hydrogen bond interactions form new effective tools to predict the coordination number for the hydrated calcium ion clusters.

Carbon Monoxide Activation on Small Iron Magnetic Cluster Surfaces, FenCO, n = 1-20. A Theoretical Approach

The chemical activation of the carbon monoxide (CO) molecule on the surface of iron clusters Fe_n (n = 1-20) is studied in this work. By means of density functional theory (DFT) all-electron calculations, we have found that the adsorption of CO over the bare magnetic Fe_n (n = 1-20) clusters is thermochemically favorable. The Fe_n-CO interaction increases the C-O bond length, from 1.128 ± 0.014 Å, for isolated CO, up to 1.251 Å, for Fe₉CO. Also, the calculated wavenumbers associated with the stretching modes ν_CO are decreased, or red-shifted, as another indicator of the CO bond weakening, passing from 2099 ± 4 to 1438 cm^-1. Markedly, wavenumbers of vibrational modes ν_CO agree admirably well in comparison with experimental results reported for Fe_nCO (n = 1, 18-20), getting small errors below 2.6%. The C-O bond is enlarged on the Fe_nCO (n = 1-20) composed systems, as the CO molecule increases its bonding, charge transference, and coordination with the iron cluster. Therefore, small bare iron particles Fe_n (n = 1-20) can be proposed to promote the CO dissociation, especially Fe₉CO, which has been proven to obtain the most prominent activation of the strong C-O bond by means of the charge transference from the metal core.

Modeling Hydrogen Release from Water with Borane and Alane Catalysts: A Unified Reaction Valley Approach

The unified reaction valley approach combined with the local vibrational mode and ring puckering analysis is applied to investigate the hydrogen evolution from water in the presence of small hydrides such as BH₃, metal hydrides as AlH₃, and their derivatives. We studied a series of reactions involving BH₃, AlH₃, B₂H₆, Al₂H₆, and AlH₃BH₃ with one- and two-water molecules, considering multiple reaction paths. In addition, the influence of the aqueous medium was examined. A general reaction mechanism was identified for most of the reactions. Those that deviate could be associated with unusually high reaction barriers with no hydrogen release. The charge transfer along the reaction path suggests that a viable hydrogen release is achieved when the catalyst adopts the role of a charge donor during the chemical processes. The puckering analysis showed that twistboat and boat forms are the predominant configurations in the case of an intermediate six-membered ring formation, which influences the activation barrier. The local mode analysis was used as a tool to detect the H-H bond formation as well as to probe catalyst regenerability. Based on the correlation between the activation energy and the change in the charge separation for cleaving O-H and B(Al)-H bonds, two promising subsets of reactions could be identified along with prescriptions for lowering the reaction barrier individually with electron-donating/withdrawing substituents.

Computational analysis of vibrational frequencies and rovibrational spectroscopic constants of hydrogen sulfide dimer using MP2 and CCSD(T)

Previous studies have shown that the weakly bonded H₂S dimer demands high level quantum chemical calculations to reproduce experimental values. We investigated the hydrogen bonding of H₂S dimer using MP2 and CCSD(T) levels of theory in combination with aug-cc-pV(D,T,Q)Z basis sets. More precisely, the binding energies, potential energy curves, rovibrational spectroscopic constants, decomposition lifetime, and normal vibrational frequencies were calculated. In addition, we introduced the local mode analysis of Konkoli-Cremer to quantify the hydrogen bonding in the H₂S dimer as well as providing for the first time the comprehensive decomposition of normal vibrational modes into local modes contributions, and a decomposition lifetime based on rate constant. The local mode force constant of the H₂S dimer hydrogen bond is smaller than that of the water dimer, in accordance with the weaker hydrogen bonding in the H₂S dimer.

PyVibMS: a PyMOL plugin for visualizing vibrations in molecules and solids

Visualizing vibrational motions calculated with different ab initio packages requires dedicated post-processing tools. Here, we present a PyMOL plugin called PyVibMS for visualizing the vibrational motions for both molecular and solid systems calculated by mainstream quantum chemical computer programs including Gaussian, Q-Chem, VASP, and CRYSTAL. Benefiting from the continuing development of the PyMOL platform, PyVibMS provides powerful functionalities and user-friendly interface. PyVibMS was written in Python and its open-source nature makes it flexible and sustainable. As an example, the motions of the Konkoli-Cremer local vibrational modes are shown in this work for the first time. PyVibMS is freely available at https://github.com/smutao/PyVibMS . Local Vibrational Mode Analysis of π–Hole Interactions between Aryl Donors and Small Molecule Acceptors

11 aryl–lone pair and three aryl–anion π –hole interactions are investigated, along with the argon–benzene dimer and water dimer as reference compounds, utilizing the local vibrational mode theory, originally introduced by Konkoli and Cremer, to quantify the strength of the π –hole interaction in terms of a new local vibrational mode stretching force constant between the two engaged monomers, which can be conveniently used to compare different π –hole systems. Several factors have emerged which influence strength of the π –hole interactions, including aryl substituent effects, the chemical nature of atoms composing the aryl rings/ π –hole acceptors, and secondary bonding interactions between donors/acceptors. Substituent effects indirectly affect the π –hole interaction strength, where electronegative aryl-substituents moderately increase π –hole interaction strength. N-aryl members significantly increase π –hole interaction strength, and anion acceptors bind more strongly with the π –hole compared to charge neutral acceptors (lone–pair donors). Secondary bonding interactions between the acceptor and the atoms in the aryl ring can increase π –hole interaction strength, while hydrogen bonding between the π –hole acceptor/donor can significantly increase or decrease strength of the π –hole interaction depending on the directionality of hydrogen bond donation. Work is in progress expanding this research on aryl π –hole interactions to a large number of systems, including halides, CO, and OCH3− as acceptors, in order to derive a general design protocol for new members of this interesting class of compounds.

Exploring the Mechanism of Catalysis with the Unified Reaction Valley Approach (URVA)—A Review

The unified reaction valley approach (URVA) differs from mainstream mechanistic studies, as it describes a chemical reaction via the reaction path and the surrounding reaction valley on the potential energy surface from the van der Waals region to the transition state and far out into the exit channel, where the products are located. The key feature of URVA is the focus on the curving of the reaction path. Moving along the reaction path, any electronic structure change of the reacting molecules is registered by a change in their normal vibrational modes and their coupling with the path, which recovers the curvature of the reaction path. This leads to a unique curvature profile for each chemical reaction with curvature minima reflecting minimal change and curvature maxima, the location of important chemical events such as bond breaking/forming, charge polarization and transfer, rehybridization, etc. A unique decomposition of the path curvature into internal coordinate components provides comprehensive insights into the origins of the chemical changes taking place. After presenting the theoretical background of URVA, we discuss its application to four diverse catalytic processes: (i) the Rh catalyzed methanol carbonylation—the Monsanto process; (ii) the Sharpless epoxidation of allylic alcohols—transition to heterogenous catalysis; (iii) Au(I) assisted [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement of allyl acetate; and (iv) the Bacillus subtilis chorismate mutase catalyzed Claisen rearrangement—and show how URVA leads to a new protocol for fine-tuning of existing catalysts and the design of new efficient and eco-friendly catalysts. At the end of this article the pURVA software is introduced. The overall goal of this article is to introduce to the chemical community a new protocol for fine-tuning existing catalytic reactions while aiding in the design of modern and environmentally friendly catalysts.
