Investigating the Interaction between Methanol and the Heulandite-type Zeolite using First Principle Molecular Dynamic

The interaction between methanol and the Heulandite-type zeolite has been unveiled to give an atomic scale detail regarding the catalytic activity of this zeolite for methanol conversion. The study was carried out by first principle molecular dynamics to get an insight into the structure and electronic behaviour of methanol inside the zeolite structure at different temperatures. The behaviour of methanol was studied when the location of the proton of Bronsted acid sites was varied to give both possible direct and less interaction with methanol. The results show that methanol interacts with the proton from zeolite to give a cationic species of [CH3OH2]+ both in 300K and 573K conditions. However, when the proton is located at different location far from possible interaction with methanol, the formation of a cationic species is hindered. This study provides an insight into the design of Heulandite type zeolite to give a catalytic activity toward methanol transformation.

A density functional theory study of arsenic immobilization by the Al(III)-modified zeolite clinoptilolite

We present density functional theory calculations of the adsorption of arsenic acid (AsO(OH)3) and arsenous acid (As(OH)3) on the Al(III)-modified natural zeolite clinoptilolite under anhydrous and hydrated conditions. From our calculated adsorption energies, we show that adsorption of both arsenic species is favorable (associative and exothermic) under anhydrous conditions. When the zeolite is hydrated, adsorption is less favourable, with the water molecules causing dissociation of the arsenic complexes, although exothermic adsorption is still observed for some sites. The strength of interaction of the arsenic complexes is shown to depend sensitively on the Si/Al ratio in the Al(III)-modified clinoptilolite, which decreases as the Si/Al ratio increases. The calculated large adsorption energies indicate the potential of Al(iii)-modified clinoptilolite for arsenic immobilization.

Sonochemical synthesis of zeolite NaP from clinoptilolite

In the present work, natural clinoptilolite was converted to zeolite NaP using ultrasonic energy, in which the transformation time shortened remarkably. The effect of post-synthesis treatment using conventional hydrothermal was also investigated. The synthesized powders were characterized by XRD, TGA/DTA, SEM, and PSD analysis. The results showed that, increasing the sonication time (energy) has no significant effect on the product's morphology. The crystallinity of the synthesized samples increased slightly with increasing sonication time, but their yield remained relatively unchanged. Furthermore, post-synthesis hydrothermal treatment showed very little influence on properties of the final product. Because the ultrasonic irradiation creates acoustic cavitation cracks on the surface structure of clinoptilolite particulates and increases the concentration of soluble alumino-silicate species, which favors the prevailing super-saturation, crystallization and crystal growth of zeolite NaP happen faster. The particles of zeolite NaP synthesized by ultrasonic irradiation consist of small crystallites of uniform size.

Chemical interaction of water molecules with framework Al in acid zeolites: a periodic ab initio study on H-clinoptilolite

Periodic quantum-chemistry methods as implemented in the CRYSTAL14 code were considered to analyse the interaction of acid clinoptilolite with water. Initially adsorbed molecules hydrolyse the Al-O bonds, giving rise to defective dealuminated materials. A suitable and representative periodic model of the partially disordered hydrated H-zeolite is the primitive cell (18 T sites) of a decahydrated trialuminated structure of HEU topology. The water distribution inside the material cavities was initially investigated. The model considered for further dealumination was the most stable one from those generated through a combined force field Monte Carlo and ab initio optimization strategy. Optimizations and energy estimations were made at the hybrid DFT level of theory (PBE0 functional) with an atomic basis set of VDZP quality. The energetics of the different pathways involved in the dealumination process was addressed by considering the Gibbs free energy with thermal and zero-point corrections through phonon analysis. It arises that hydrated models exhibit protonated water clusters stabilized by different kinds of H-bonds. The first Al extraction is slightly more energetically favourable from T3 than T2 sites, but at the same time the latter is more probable owing to its larger Al population. However, concerning the second dealumination step, it is more favourable removing the Al atom from both remaining sites after a starting abstraction from T2 rather than T3. These facts determine that the most probable overall pathways go through a first Al removal from T2. The agreement with experimental results is discussed.
