Abstract
Three unique hydrazone-based small-molecule-activatable photosensitizers were designed and synthesized. Two of them work efficiently in a low-pH environment, resembling the microenvironment of the cancerous tissues. The activation pathway is unique and based on hydrazone bond cleavage. They were investigated through in vitro cellular studies in aggressive cancer lines, and tumor-specific culture conditions successfully initiated the cleavage and activation of the cytotoxic singlet oxygen generation in the relevant time period. The interesting photophysical characteristics of the α- and β-substituted hydrazone derivatives of the Bodipy structures and their mild hydrolysis methodologies were also investigated successfully.

Abstract
The results of a X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and steady-state absorption spectroscopy study of the electronic structure, and cationic and excited states of a series of 1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-substituted BODIPYs (4Me,2R-BODIPYs) are presented. The experimental data were interpreted using high-level ab initio quantum chemical computations, including the algebraic diagrammatic construction method for the polarization propagator of the second order (ADC(2)), the outer-valence Green's function (OVGF) method, the density functional (DFT) approach, and the time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) approach. Substitution effects on the XPS and absorption spectra were determined for 2,6-positions of 4Me,2R-BODIPY pyrrole nuclei (R = H, Br, Bu, benzyl). A very satisfactory performance of the DFT Koopmans theorem analogue was demonstrated with respect to the energy intervals between the electronic levels of 4Me,2R-BODIPY above 13 eV (BHHLYP functional) and the values of the HOMO-LUMO energy gap (ωB97X functional).

Abstract
This research work is devoted to collecting a high-quality dataset of BODIPYs in a series of 10-30 solvents. In total, 115 individual compounds in 71 solvents are represented by 1698 arrays of the spectral and photophysical properties of the fluorophore. Each dye for a series of solvents is characterized by a calculated value of solvatochromic sensitivity according to a semiempirical approach applied to a series of solvents. The whole dataset is classified into 6 and 24 clusters of solvatochromic sensitivity, from high negative to high positive solvatochromism. The results of the analysis are visualized by the polarity mapping plots depicting, in terms of wavenumbers, the absorption versus emission, stokes shift versus - (absorption maxima + emission maxima), and quantum yield versus stokes shift. An analysis of the clusters combining several dyes in an individual series of solvents shows that dyes of a high solvatochromic sensitivity demonstrate regular behaviour of the corresponding plots suitable for polarity and viscosity mapping. The fluorophores collected in this study represent a high quality dataset of pattern dyes for analytical and bioanalytical applications. The developed tools could be applied for the analysis of the applicability domain of the fluorescent sensors.

Abstract
Herein, we report the synthesis and photophysical characterization of the novel tris(4-(2,2-difluoro-6-methyl-2H-1λ3,3,2λ4-dioxaborinin-4-yl)phenyl)amine trimeric probe (A2) via the reaction between triphenylamine (1), acetic anhydride, and BF3·OEt2 implying the twelve new bond formation in a one-pot manner. This highly fluorescent compound in solution (φ up to 0.91 at 572 nm) and solid state (φ = 0.24 at 571 nm) showed a better solvatofluorochromism than its analog monomeric A1 due to symmetry-broken charge transfer, which is consistent with high solvent dipolarity (SdP) response in Catalán's multiparametric regression. Notably, A2 had a high sensibility and selectivity for CN- or F- in solution (LODCN-/F- = 0.18/0.70 μM), and CN- can be discriminated from F- by the reaction of A2 with 3.0 equiv. of CN-. In addition, A2 was impregnated on filter paper to prepare test strips that were applied to naked-eye qualitative sensing of CN- or F-. Finally, the octupolar system in A2 allows for better action of two-photon excitation cross-section values when compared with that of the dipolar structure in A1. These findings provide further information for the design of new efficient two-photon absorption dyes.

Comprehensive Empirical Model of Substitution—Influence on Hydrogen Bonding in Aromatic Schiff Bases. Int J Mol Sci 2022; 23:ijms232012439. Abstract
In this work, over 500 structures of tri-ring aromatic Schiff bases with different substitution patterns were investigated to develop a unified description of the substituent effect on the intramolecular hydrogen bridge. Both proximal and distal effects were examined using Density Functional Theory (DFT) in the gas phase and with solvent reaction field (Polarizable Continuum Model (PCM) and water as the solvent). In order to investigate and characterize the non-covalent interactions, a topological analysis was performed using the Quantum Theory of Atoms In Molecules (QTAIM) theory and Non-Covalent Interactions (NCI) index. The obtained results were summarized as the generalized, empirical model of the composite substituent effect, assessed using an additional group of simple ring-based Schiff bases. The composite substituent effect has been divided into separate increments describing the different interactions of the hydrogen bridge and the substituent: the classical substituent effect, involving resonance and induction mediated through the ring, steric increment based on substituent proximity to the bridge elements, and distal increment, derived from substitution on the distal ring.

Abstract
The ortho-hydroxy aryl Schiff base 2-[(E)-(phenylimino)methyl]phenol and its deutero-derivative have been studied by the inelastic incoherent neutron scattering (IINS), infrared (IR) and Raman experimental methods, as well as by Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Density-Functional Perturbation Theory (DFPT) simulations. The assignments of vibrational modes within the 3500–50 cm−1 spectral region made it possible to state that the strong hydrogen bond in the studied compound can be classified as the so-called quasi-aromatic bond. The isotopic substitution supplemented by the results of DFT calculations allowed us to identify vibrational bands associated with all five major hydrogen bond vibrations. Quasi-isostructural polymorphism of 2-[(E)-(phenylimino)methyl]phenol (SA) and 2-[(E)-(phenyl-D5-imino)methyl]phenol (SA-C6D5) has been studied by powder X-ray diffraction in the 20–320 K temperature range.

Abstract
Boron-dipyrromethene derivatives (BODIPYs) are a category of molecules with excellent photophysical properties and can be applied to various fields. This work investigates the fluorescent properties of two azomethine-BODIPY dyads in different solvents based on the time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) method. The potential energy curves (PECs) show that the polar protic solvent and the enhanced π-conjugation effect can lower the proton-transfer (PT) barriers, causing the main configuration of NA-BODIPY in methanol to be the keto form, while the main configuration of NA-BODIPY in toluene and SA-BODIPY in methanol and toluene is the enol form. The keto forms of the two compounds possess the twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) decay pathway in the excited state identified by the optimized twisted configurations and the appropriate barriers of the TICT process, whereas the twisted configurations of the enol forms are nonexistent. TICT successfully competes with excited-state proton transfer (ESIPT) of the keto form, which leads to the fluorescence quenching of NA-BODIPY in methanol. This work provides new ideas for the influence of enol-keto tautomerism and the competitiveness of TICT and ESIPT on the photophysical properties of BODIPYs and is expected to provide guidance for the design of new BODIPY functional molecules.

Abstract
A simple semiempiric phenomenological approach is developed for quantifying the solvent effect on the absorption and emission properties of BODIPYs. It is based on a new rule describing the linear relationship between the difference (Stokes shift) and the sum (double Gibbs free energy of electron transfer) for absorption and emission wavenumbers derived from a combination of solvent functions of Liptay theory. This rule is correspondent to changes of dipole moments in the ground and excited states. High reliability and advantages of the developed approach in comparison with traditional methods of the analysis of the solvatochromism based on Dimroth-Reichard and Lippert-Mataga solvent scales are illustrated for selected BODIPYs exhibiting positive, negative, and near-zero solvatochromism.

Abstract
The present study is devoted to the combined experimental and theoretical description
of the photophysical properties and photodegradation of the new boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY)
derivatives obtained recently for biomedical applications, such as bacteria photoinactivation
(Piskorz et al., Dyes and Pigments 2020, 178, 108322). Absorption and emission spectra for a wide
group of solvents of different properties for the analyzed BODIPY derivatives were investigated
in order to verify their suitability for photopharmacological applications. Additionally, the photostability
of the analyzed systems were thoroughly determined. The exposition to the UV light was
found first to cause the decrease in the most intensive absorption band and the appearance of the
hypsochromically shifted band of similar intensity. On the basis of the chromatographic and computational
study, this effect was assigned to the detachment of the iodine atoms from the BODIPY core.
After longer exposition to UV light, photodegradation occurred, leading to the disappearance of the
intensive absorption bands and the emergence of small intensity signals in the strongly blue-shifted
range of the spectrum. Since the most intensive bands in original dyes are ascribed to the molecular
core bearing the BF2 moiety, this result can be attributed to the significant cleavage of the BF2 ring. In
order to fully characterize the obtained molecules, the comprehensive computational chemistry study
was performed. The influence of the intermolecular interactions for their absorption in solution was
analyzed. The theoretical data entirely support the experimental outcomes.

Abstract
The derivatives of 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (BODIPY) are pivotal ingredients for a large number of functional, stimuli-responsive materials and therapeutic molecules based on their photophysical properties, and there is a urgent need to understand and predict their optical traits prior to investing a large amount of resources in preparing them. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) computations were performed to calculate the excitation energies of the lowest-energy singlet excited state of a large series of common BODIPY derivatives employing various functional aiming at the best possible combination providing the least deviations from the experimental values. Using the common "fudge" correction, a series of combinations was investigated, and a methodology is proposed offering equal or better performances than what is reported in the literature.

Abstract
A review of intramolecular hydrogen bonding in ortho-hydroxyaryl Schiff bases, ortho-hydroxyaryl Mannich bases, dipyrrins, ortho-hydroxyaryl ketones, ortho-hydroxyaryl amides, and 4-Bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (BODIPY) dyes with tautomeric sensors as substituents is presented in this paper. Ortho-hydroxy Schiff and Mannich base derivatives are known as model molecules for analysing the properties of intramolecular hydrogen bonding. The compounds under discussion possess physicochemical features modulated by the presence of strong intramolecular hydrogen bonds. The equilibrium between intra- and inter-molecular hydrogen bonds in BODIPY is discussed. Therefore, the summary can serve as a knowledge compendium of the influence of the hydrogen bond on the molecular properties of aromatic compounds.

Abstract
Previous work has shown that fluctuations in zinc content and subcellular localization play key roles in regulating cell cycle progression; however, a deep mechanistic understanding requires the determination of when, where, and how labile zinc pools are concentrated into or released from stores. Labile zinc ions can be difficult to detect with probes that require hydrolysis of toxic protecting groups or application at high concentrations that negatively impact cell function. We previously reported a BODIPY-based zinc probe, ZincBY-1, that can be used at working concentrations that are 20-200-fold lower than concentrations employed with other probes. To better understand how zinc pools can be visualized at such low probe concentrations, we modulated the photophysical properties via changes at the 5-position of the BODIPY core. One of these, ZincBY-4, exhibits an order of magnitude higher affinity for zinc, an 8-fold increase in brightness in response to zinc, and a 100 nm Stokes shift within cells. The larger Stokes shift of ZincBY-4 presents a unique opportunity for simultaneous imaging with GFP or fluorescein sensors upon single excitation. Finally, by creating a proxy for the cellular environment in spectrometer experiments, we show that the ZincBY series are highly effective at 50 nM because they can pass membranes and accumulate in regions of high zinc concentration within a cell. These features of the ZincBY probe class have widespread applications in imaging and for understanding the regulatory roles of zinc fluxes in live cells.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of three new organic hydrazines containing BODIPY dyes is described. The respective aminomethyl complexes were also synthesized to aid in the assignment of the physical properties that were hydrazine-based vs. BODIPY-based. Incorporation of a BODIPY dye into an organic hydrazine introduced a reduction event (average value of -1.70 V vs. Cp2Fe/Cp2Fe+). Although two irreversible oxidation events were observed, it was unclear whether the oxidation events arose from BODIPY-based or amine/hydrazine-based oxidations. The respective BODIPY-appended hydrazine complexes exhibited excited state lifetimes on the order of 2-6 ns, suggesting the presence of a singlet excited state. The excited state lifetimes of the BODIPY-appended hydrazine complexes were about a factor of ten greater than the respective aminomethyl complexes. Computational analysis showed that by appending a BODIPY dye to a hydrazine fragment the hydrazine fragment becomes more susceptible to transfer H2 equivalents as protons and hydrides as opposed to H-atoms, which occurs with common organic hydrazines. Computational analysis also revealed that the BODIPY-based redox events can be used to manipulate the mechanism for H2 transfer from the BODIPY-appended hydrazine, where a BODIPY-based reduction favors H-atom transfer and a BODIPY-based oxidation favors proton transfer followed by hydride transfer.

Abstract
The electronic structure and optical properties of the isomeric difluoroboron β-diketonates, 2,2-difluoro-4-methylnaphtho-[2,1-e]-1,3,2-dioxaborin (I) and 2,2-difluoro-4-methylnaphtho-[1,2-e]-1,3,2-dioxaborin (II), were studied by means of X-ray photoelectron, absorption and luminescence spectroscopies. The experimental results were interpreted using high-level ab initio quantum chemical computations, including the algebraic-diagrammatic construction method for the polarization propagator of the second and third orders (ADC(2) and ADC(3)), the outer-valence Green's function (OVGF) method, and the time-dependent density functional (TDDFT) approach. The X-ray photoelectron measurements were assigned in the entire energy range using the results of the Kohn-Sham orbital calculations which employed the B3LYP functional. Pronounced hypsochromic shift of crystal-state fluorescence was observed in I upon the lowering of temperature, which can be explained by the deterioration of the conditions for excimers formation. According to our results, remarkable feature of II, absent in I, is its phosphorescence at room temperature. Basing on our calculations, a decay mechanism for the S1 state was proposed, explaining the observed differences in the phosphorescence of I and II.

Abstract
Regioselective reactivity of the 1-methyl group of free-base dipyrrins is explored, including discussion of tautomerism to provide exocyclic alkenyl reactivity. Deuterium is installed so as to generate dipyrrins substituted with deuterated methyl groups. Furthermore, the 1-methyl group reacts to become involved in C-C bonds involving only sp3-hybridised carbon atoms. The isolation of an elusive framework featuring a dipyrrin substituted with a pyrrole in a non-vinylogous fashion is also reported. The use of asymmetric dipyrrins featuring an electron-withdrawing group on one of the pyrrolic units results in regioselective reaction of the alpha-methyl group distal to the electron-withdrawing group.

Abstract
The structural study of five Schiff bases derived from diaminomaleonitrile (DAMN) and 2-hydroxy carbonyl compounds was performed using 1H, 13C and 15N NMR methods in solution and in the solid state as well. ATR-FTIR and X-Ray spectroscopies were used for confirmation of the results obtained by NMR method. The imine obtained from DAMN and benzaldehyde was synthesized as a model compound which lacks intramolecular hydrogen bond. Deprotonation of all synthesized compounds was done by treating with tetramethylguanidine (TMG). NMR data revealed that salicylidene Schiff bases in DMSO solution exist as OH forms without intramolecular hydrogen bonds and independent on the substituents in aromatic ring. In the case of 2-hydroxy naphthyl derivative, the OH proton is engaged into weak intramolecular hydrogen bond. Two of imines (salDAMN and 5-BrsalDAMN) exist in DMSO solution as equilibrium mixtures of two isomers (A and B). The structures of equilibrium mixture in the solid state have been studied by NMR, ATR-FTIR and X-Ray methods. The deprotonation of three studied compounds (salDAMN, 5-BrsalDAMN, and 5-CH3salDAMN) proceeded in two different ways: deprotonation of oxygen atom (X form) or of nitrogen atom of free primary amine group of DAMN moiety (Y form). For 5-NO2salDAMN and naphDAMN only one form (X) was observed.

Abstract
In the title compound (3-amino-4,4-diphenyl-BODIPY), C28H32BN3, the central six-membered ring has a flattened sofa conformation, with one of the N atoms deviating by 0.142 (4) Å from the mean plane of the other five atoms, which have an r.m.s. deviation of 0.015 Å. The dihedral angle between the two essentially planar outer five-membered rings is 8.0 (2)°. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked via weak N-H⋯π inter-actions, forming chains along [010]. The com-pound displays solvent-dependent behaviours in both NMR and fluorescence spectroscopy. In the 1H NMR spectra, the aliphatic resonance signals virtually coalesce in solvents such as chloro-form, di-chloro-methane and di-bromo-ethane; however, they are fully resolved in solvents such as dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), methanol and toluene. The excitation and fluorescence intensities in chloro-form decreased significantly over time, while in DMSO the decrease is not so profound. In toluene, the excitation and fluorescent intensities are not time-dependent. This behaviour is presumably attributed to the assembly of 3-amino-4,4-diphenyl-BODIPY in solution that leads to the formation of noncovalent structures, while in polar or aromatic solvents, the formation of these assemblies is disrupted, leading to resolution of signals in the NMR spectra.

Abstract
The crystal structure of two neutral triarylmethane dyes with a p-quinone methide core was determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. The spectroscopic characteristics of both compounds in 23 solvents with different polarities or hydrogen-bonding donor (HBD) abilities has been studied as a function of three solvatochromic parameters (ET(30), π* and α). Both compounds 1 and 2 showed a pronounced bathochromic shift of the main absorption band on increasing solvent polarity and HBD ability. The correlation is better for compound 2 than for compound 1. The stronger effect and better correlation was observed for compound 2 with the increment of the solvent HBD ability (α parameter).
