Effect of proteins on biocementation in construction materials

This study examines the effect of proteins on the binding property and microstructure of enzymatic-induced calcium carbonate precipitation (EICP) in cementitious environment. The protein modified precipitates generally demonstrated improved binding to a glass slide surface or cement paste surface compared to the control precipitate. A marked decrease in the amount and binding strength of the precipitates in the cementitious environment was observed due to a reduction in the urease enzyme activity. The protein modified precipitates exhibited noticeable improvement compared to the control precipitate in cementitious environment which could arise from the ability of the proteins to partially shield urease from the negative effect of high pH. The protein gel network formation due to the complexation between the proteins and Ca2+ provides nucleation sites for CaCO3 crystallization. The FTIR, SEM, TGA, and XRD results indicated that vaterite is the dominant polymorph in cementitious environment compared to calcite in deionized water.

Statistical 3D morphology characterization of vaterite microspheres produced by engineered Escherichia coli

Hollow vaterite microspheres are important materials for biomedical applications such as drug delivery and regenerative medicine owing to their biocompatibility, high specific surface area, and ability to encapsulate a large number of bioactive molecules and compounds. We demonstrated that hollow vaterite microspheres are produced by an Escherichia coli strain engineered with a urease gene cluster from the ureolytic bacteria Sporosarcina pasteurii in the presence of bovine serum albumin. We characterized the 3D nanoscale morphology of five biogenic hollow vaterite microspheres using 3D high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) tomography. Using automated high-throughput HAADF-STEM imaging across several sample tilt orientations, we show that the microspheres evolved from a smaller more ellipsoidal shape to a larger more spherical shape while the internal hollow core increased in size and remained relatively spherical, indicating that the microspheres produced by this engineered strain likely do not contain the bacteria. The statistical 3D morphology information demonstrates the potential for using biogenic calcium carbonate mineralization to produce hollow vaterite microspheres with controlled morphologies. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: The nanoscale 3D structures of biomaterials determine their physical, chemical, and biological properties, however significant efforts are required to obtain a statistical understanding of the internal 3D morphology of materials without damaging the structures. In this study, we developed a non-destructive, automated technique that allows us to understand the nanoscale 3D morphology of many unique hollow vaterite microspheres beyond the spectroscopy methods that lack local information and microscopy methods that cannot interrogate the full 3D structure. The method allowed us to quantitatively correlate the external diameters and aspect ratios of vaterite microspheres with their hollow internal structures at the nanoscale. This work demonstrates the opportunity to use automated transmission electron microscopy to characterize nanoscale 3D morphologies of many biomaterials and validate the chemical and biological functionality of these materials.

Trojan-horse mineralization of trigger factor to impregnate non-woven alginate fabrics for enhanced hemostatic efficacy

Uncontrolled hemorrhage remains a leading cause of mortality after trauma. This work describes a facile mineralization strategy for enhancing hemostatic efficacy of alginate non-woven fabrics, involving the precipitation of amorphous CaCO3 induced by alginate fibers, along with Trojan-horse-like tissue factor (TF) encapsulation. The amorphous CaCO3 served as a transient carrier, capable of releasing Ca2+ and TF upon contact with blood. Coagulation test and rat tail cut and hemorrhaging liver models all revealed superior hemostatic capability of mineralized TF-in-alginate fabrics compared to bare fabrics, solely mineralized form, or commercial zeolite-modified gauze, benefiting from the combined hemostatic properties of alginate matrix and released Ca2+ and TF. Meanwhile, comprehensive biocompatibility and mechanical stability evaluations demonstrate the ternary composite's good biosafety. These results along with the extension study with chitosan- and cellulose-based dressings underline the great potential and versatility of polysaccharide-hemostat-mediated CaCO3 mineralization with TF integration for achieving rapid hemorrhage control.

Exploiting Benefits of Vaterite Metastability to Design Degradable Systems for Biomedical Applications

The widespread application of calcium carbonate is determined by its high availability in nature and simplicity of synthesis in laboratory conditions. Moreover, calcium carbonate possesses highly attractive physicochemical properties that make it suitable for a wide range of biomedical applications. This review provides a conclusive analysis of the results on using the tunable vaterite metastability in the development of biodegradable drug delivery systems and therapeutic vehicles with a controlled and sustained release of the incorporated cargo. This manuscript highlights the nuances of vaterite recrystallization to non-porous calcite, dissolution at acidic pH, biodegradation at in vivo conditions and control over these processes. This review outlines the main benefits of vaterite instability for the controlled liberation of the encapsulated molecules for the development of biodegradable natural and synthetic polymeric materials for biomedical purposes.

CaCO3 powder-mediated biomineralization of antigen nanosponges synergize with PD-1 blockade to potentiate anti-tumor immunity

Antigen self-assembly nanovaccines advance the minimalist design of therapeutic cancer vaccines, but the issue of inefficient cross-presentation has not yet been fully addressed. Herein, we report a unique approach by combining the concepts of "antigen multi-copy display" and "calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) biomineralization" to increase cross-presentation. Based on this strategy, we successfully construct sub-100 nm biomineralized antigen nanosponges (BANSs) with high CaCO₃ loading (38.13 wt%) and antigen density (61.87%). BANSs can be effectively uptaken by immature antigen-presenting cells (APCs) in the lymph node upon subcutaneous injection. Achieving efficient spatiotemporal coordination of antigen cross-presentation and immune effects, BANSs induce the production of CD4⁺ T helper cells and cytotoxic T lymphocytes, resulting in effective tumor growth inhibition. BANSs combined with anti-PD-1 antibodies synergistically enhance anti-tumor immunity and reverse the tumor immunosuppressive microenvironment. Overall, this CaCO₃ powder-mediated biomineralization of antigen nanosponges offer a robust and safe strategy for cancer immunotherapy.

Armoring a liposome-integrated tissue factor with sacrificial CaCO3 to form potent self-propelled hemostats

The development of hemostatic materials suitable for diverse emergency scenarios is of paramount significance, and there is growing interest in wound-site delivery of hemostasis-enhancing agents that can leverage the body's inherent mechanisms. Herein we report the design and performance of a biomimetic nanoparticle system enclosing tissue factor (TF), the most potent known blood coagulation trigger, which was reconstituted into liposomes and shielded by the liposome-templated CaCO₃ mineralization. The mineral coatings, which mainly comprised water-soluble amorphous and vateritic phases, synergized with the lipidated TF to improve blood coagulation in vitro. These coatings served as sacrificial masks capable of releasing Ca²⁺ coagulation factors or propelling the TF-liposomes via acid-aided generation of CO₂ bubbles while endowing them with high thermostability under dry conditions. In comparison to commercially available hemostatic particles, CaCO₃ mineralized TF-liposomes yielded significantly shorter hemostasis times and less blood loss in vivo. When mixed with organic acids, the CO₂-generating formulation further improved hemostasis by delivering TF-liposomes deep into actively bleeding wounds with good biocompatibility, as observed in a rat hepatic injury model. Therefore, the designed composite mimicry of coagulatory components exhibited strong hemostatic efficacy, which in combination with the propulsion mechanism would serve as a versatile approach to treating a variety of severe hemorrhages.

Precipitation of calcium carbonate in the presence of rhamnolipids in alginate hydrogels as a model of biomineralization

This paper reports the effects of rhamnolipids presence in the alginate hydrogel and CO₃^2- solution, on the precipitation of CaCO₃ in the Ca²⁺ loaded alginate hydrogel. Characteristics of the formed particles are discussed. Model conditions containing alginate hydrogel and rhamnolipids were used in order to mimic the natural environment of biomineralization in biofilms. It has been shown that rhamnolipids affect the characteristics of precipitated calcium carbonate effect of using these biosurfactants depends on their concentration as well as whether they are directly present in the hydrogel matrix or the carbonate solution surrounding the hydrogel. The greatest effect compared to the control samples was found for the rhamnolipids in the form of micelles directly present in the hydrogel with the CaCl₂ cross-linked solution at concentration of 0.05 M. These conditions result in the highest increase in vaterite content, specific surface area, and pore volume. The mechanism of CaCO₃ precipitation in alginate hydrogel containing rhamnolipids has been proposed.

Metabolically Doping of 3D Diatomaceous Biosilica with Titanium

Diatoms represent, in terms of species number, one of the largest groups of microalgae that have the ability to synthesize phenomenal mineral composites characterized by complex hierarchical structures. Their shells, called frustules, create intricately ornamented structures, reminiscent of the most sophisticated, natural mosaics. Ordinated pore systems perforate siliceous walls of the frustules with diameters ranging from nano to micro-scale, forming openwork three-dimensional silica structures. The use of these features is one of the main challenges in developing new technological solutions. In this study we assess the ability of selected diatom species (Pseudostaurosira trainorii) for metabolic insertion of soluble titanium from the culture medium into the structure of amorphous silica cell walls by its cultivation in laboratory conditions. The study is aimed at obtaining new and strengthening the already existing optical properties of diatomaceous biosilica. The physicochemical properties of the obtained materials have been studied using a series of instrumental methods.

Controlling the calcium carbonate microstructure of engineered living building materials

The fabrication of responsive soft materials that enable the controlled release of microbial induced calcium carbonate (CaCO3) precipitation (MICP) would be highly desirable for the creation of living materials that can be used, for example, as self-healing construction materials. To obtain a tight control over the mechanical properties of these materials, needed for civil engineering applications, the amount, location, and structure of the forming minerals must be precisely tuned; this requires good control over the dynamic functionality of bacteria. Despite recent advances in the self-healing of concrete cracks and the understanding of the role of synthesis conditions on the CaCO3 polymorphic regulation, the degree of control over the CaCO3 remains insufficient to meet these requirements. We demonstrate that the amount and location of CaCO3 produced within a matrix, can be controlled through the concentration and location of bacteria; these parameters can be precisely tuned if bacteria are encapsulated, as we demonstrate with the soil-dwelling bacterium Sporosarcina pasteurii that is deposited within biocompatible alginate and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) hydrogels. Using a competitive ligand exchange mechanism that relies on the presence of yeast extract, we control the timing of the release of calcium ions that crosslink the alginate or CMC without compromising bacterial viability. With this novel use of hydrogel encapsulation of bacteria for on-demand release of MICP, we achieve control over the amount and structure of CaCO3-based composites and demonstrate that S. pasteurii can be stored for up to 3 months at an accessible storage temperature of 4 °C, which are two important factors that currently limit the applicability of MICP for the reinforcement of construction materials. These composites thus have the potential to sense, respond, and heal without the need for external intervention.

Eco-friendly deicer prepared from waste oyster shells and its deicing properties with metal corrosion

Calcium acetate eco-friendly deicer was prepared using waste oyster shell as a raw reactant material and its physicochemical properties were investigated. The waste oyster shells were converted to a calcium acetate deicer by reaction with acetic acid at ambient temperature. The physicochemical properties of the prepared calcium acetate deicer were analysed using various analytical method. The ice melting and metal corrosion characteristics of the calcium acetate deicer synthesized from the waste oyster shell were evaluated by comparison with those of the calcium chloride and sodium chloride deicers. The chloride deicers severely corroded the metal, but the calcium acetate deicer prepared from the waste oyster shell did not cause metal corrosion. The ice melting performance of calcium acetate prepared from the waste oyster shell was lower than that of calcium chlorides, however, the addition of sodium hydroxide could significantly improve the ice melting capacity.

Transdermal platform for the delivery of the antifungal drug naftifine hydrochloride based on porous vaterite particles

Development of a skin-targeted particulate delivery system providing an extended or sustained release of the payload and a localized therapeutic effect is one of the main challenges in the treatment of fungal skin infections. In the topical administration of antifungals, the drug should penetrate into the stratum corneum and lower layers of the skin in effective concentrations. Here, we introduce biodegradable calcium carbonate carriers containing 4.9% (w/w) of naftifine hydrochloride antimycotic allowing the efficient accumulation into the skin appendages. The proposed particulate formulation ensures the enhancement of the local drug concentration, prolongation of the payload release, and control over its rate. Furthermore, it provides a highly efficient cellular uptake and excellent bioavailability in vitro and enables a deep penetration during transfollicular delivery in vivo. The enhanced fungi growth inhibition efficiency of naftifine-loaded calcium carbonate carriers compared to naftifine solution makes them a promising alternative to creams and gels currently existing on the market.

Avian eggshell formation reveals a new paradigm for vertebrate mineralization via vesicular amorphous calcium carbonate

Amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) is an unstable mineral phase, which is progressively transformed into aragonite or calcite in biomineralization of marine invertebrate shells or avian eggshells, respectively. We have previously proposed a model of vesicular transport to provide stabilized ACC in chicken uterine fluid where eggshell mineralization takes place. Herein, we report further experimental support for this model. We confirmed the presence of extracellular vesicles (EVs) using transmission EM and showed high levels of mRNA of vesicular markers in the oviduct segments where eggshell mineralization occurs. We also demonstrate that EVs contain ACC in uterine fluid using spectroscopic analysis. Moreover, proteomics and immunofluorescence confirmed the presence of major vesicular, mineralization-specific and eggshell matrix proteins in the uterus and in purified EVs. We propose a comprehensive role for EVs in eggshell mineralization, in which annexins transfer calcium into vesicles and carbonic anhydrase 4 catalyzes the formation of bicarbonate ions (HCO[Formula: see text]), for accumulation of ACC in vesicles. We hypothesize that ACC is stabilized by ovalbumin and/or lysozyme or additional vesicle proteins identified in this study. Finally, EDIL3 and MFGE8 are proposed to serve as guidance molecules to target EVs to the mineralization site. We therefore report for the first-time experimental evidence for the components of vesicular transport to supply ACC in a vertebrate model of biomineralization.

Surfactin as a Green Agent Controlling the Growth of Porous Calcite Microstructures

This study presents a new, simple way to obtain mesoporous calcite structures via a green method using an eco-friendly surface-active compound, surfactin, as a controlling agent. The effects of synthesis time and surfactin concentration were investigated. The obtained structures were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) coupled with gas mass spectrometry (QMS) analysis. The experimental data showed that surfactin molecules significantly changed the morphology of the calcite crystals, roughening and deforming the surface and creating a greater specific surface area, even at low biosurfactant concentrations (10 ppm). The size of the crystals was reduced, and the zeta potential value of calcium carbonate was more negative when more biosurfactant was added. The XRD data revealed that the biomolecules were incorporated into the crystals and slowed the transformation of vaterite into calcite. It has been shown that as long as vaterite is present in the medium, the calcite surface will be less deformed. The strong influence of surfactin molecules on the crystal growth of calcium carbonate was due to the interaction of surfactin molecules with free calcium ions in the solution as well as the biomolecules adsorption at the formed crystal surface. The role of micelles in crystal growth was examined, and the mechanism of mesoporous calcium carbonate formation was presented.

Diatoms Biomass as a Joint Source of Biosilica and Carbon for Lithium-Ion Battery Anodes

The biomass of one type cultivated diatoms (Pseudostaurosira trainorii), being a source of 3D-stuctured biosilica and organic matter-the source of carbon, was thermally processed to become an electroactive material in a potential range adequate to become an anode in lithium ion batteries. Carbonized material was characterized by means of selected solid-state physics techniques (XRD, Raman, TGA). It was shown that the pyrolysis temperature (600 °C, 800 °C, 1000 °C) affected structural and electrochemical properties of the electrode material. Biomass carbonized at 600 °C exhibited the best electrochemical properties reaching a specific discharge capacity of 460 mAh g-1 for the 70th cycle. Such a value indicates the possibility of usage of biosilica as an electrode material in energy storage applications.

Exploration of Antigen Induced CaCO3 Nanoparticles for Therapeutic Vaccine

Therapeutic vaccines possess particular advantages and show promising potential to combat burdening diseases, such as acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, hepatitis, and even cancers. An efficient therapeutic vaccine would strengthen the immune system and eventually eliminate target cells through cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs). Unfortunately, insufficient efficacy in triggering such an adaptive immune response is a problem that remains unsolved. To achieve efficient cellular immunity, antigen-presenting cells must capture and further cross-present disease-associated antigens to CD8 T cells via major histocompatibility complex I molecules. Here, a biomimetic strategy is developed to fabricate hierarchical ovalbumin@CaCO₃ nanoparticles (OVA@NP, ≈500 nm) under the templating effect of antigen OVA. Taking advantage of the unique physicochemical properties of crystalline vaterite, cluster structure, and high loading, OVA@NP can efficiently ferry cargo antigen to dendritic cells and blast lysosomes for antigen escape to the cytoplasm. In addition, the first evidence that the physical stress from generated CO₂ induces autophagy through the LC3/Beclin 1 pathways is presented. These outcomes cooperatively promote antigen cross-presentation, elicit CD8 T cell proliferation, ignite a potent and specific CTL response, and finally achieve prominent tumor therapy effects.

Protein-Mediated Precipitation of Calcium Carbonate

Calcium carbonate is an important component in exoskeletons of many organisms. The synthesis of calcium carbonate was performed by mixing dimethyl carbonate and an aqueous solution of calcium chloride dihydrate. The precipitation product was characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) measurements. In addition, the turbidity of the reaction solution was acquired to monitor the kinetics of the calcium carbonate structure's growth in the investigated system. In this study, samples of CaCO₃ particles obtained with individual proteins, such as ovalbumin, lysozyme, and a mixture of the proteins, were characterized and compared with a control sample, i.e., synthesized without proteins. The obtained data indicated that the addition of ovalbumin to the reaction changed the morphology of crystals from rhombohedral to 'stack-like' structures. Lysozyme, however, did not affect the morphology of calcium carbonate, yet the presence of the protein mixture led to the creation of more complex composites in which the calcium carbonate crystals were constructed in protein matrices formed by the ovalbumin-lysozyme interaction. It was also observed that in the protein mixture, ovalbumin has a major influence on the CaCO₃ formation through a strong interaction with calcium ions, which leads to the coalescence and creation of a steric barrier reducing particle growth. The authors proposed a mechanism of calcium carbonate grain growth in the presence of both proteins, taking into account the interaction of calcium ions with the protein.

Nano-antacids enhance pH neutralization beyond their bulk counterparts: synthesis and characterization

Antacids are crucial in the treatment of gastro-esophageal reflux disease and peptic ulcers. Antacids based on the calcite phase of bulk calcium carbonate have been the standard for over fifty years. More recent research has shown that nanomaterial forms of such bulk materials often have improved properties. However, the metastable vaterite form of calcium carbonate is particularly difficult to synthesize as a nanomaterial, and thus has not been extensively studied. Here, we describe the synthesis of these particles and investigate them for antacid applications. Experimental and computational approaches show that nanoscale vaterite particles maintain neutral gastric pH values three times longer than commercial antacids.

Synthesis of nanostructured calcium carbonate/methotrexate@silica and its application in cancer therapy

Both ACC-MTX@SiO₂ and vaterite-MTX@SiO₂ nanospheres were synthesized at different pH values. The results indicated that ACC-MTX@SiO₂ nanospheres presented better controlled release and results in efficient death of cancer cells.

Quantitative proteomics provides new insights into chicken eggshell matrix protein functions during the primary events of mineralisation and the active calcification phase

Eggshell is a bioceramic composed of 95% calcium carbonate mineral and 3.5% organic matrix. Its structural organisation is controlled by its organic matrix. We have used quantitative proteomics to study four key stages of shell mineralisation: 1) widespread deposition of amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC), 2) ACC transformation into crystalline calcite aggregates, 3) formation of larger calcite crystal units and 4) development of a columnar structure with preferential calcite crystal orientation. This approach explored the distribution of 216 shell matrix proteins found at the four stages. Variations in abundance according to these calcification events were observed for 175 proteins. A putative function related to the mineralisation process was predicted by bioinformatics for 77 of them and was further characterised. We confirmed the important role of lysozyme, ovotransferrin, ovocleidin-17 and ovocleidin-116 for shell calcification process, characterised major calcium binding proteins (EDIL3, ALB, MFGE8, NUCB2), and described novel proteoglycans core proteins (GPC4, HAPLN3). We suggest that OVAL and OC-17 play a role in the stabilisation of ACC. Finally, we report proteins involved in the regulation of proteins driving the mineralisation. They correspond to numerous molecular chaperones including CLU, PPIB and OCX21, protease and protease inhibitors including OVM and CST3, and regulators of phosphorylation.

Calcium carbonate microparticle growth controlled by a conjugate drug-copolymer and crystallization time

The influence of crystallization reaction time on CaCO3 microparticle growth from supersaturate aqueous solutions, in the presence of a conjugate drug-copolymer, has been investigated. The polymer conjugate, P(NVP-MA-Ox), is based on poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone-co-maleic anhydride) as the support and 2-amino-5-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole as the drug. The microparticles are characterized by optical, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, X-ray diffraction, flow particle image analysis and particle charge density. X-ray diffraction (XRD) investigations showed that calcite polymorph content increased with an increase in crystallization time, even if the electrostatic interactions between Ca(2+) and polyanionic sites of P(NVP-MA-Ox) structure conduct to an increased vaterite phase stability. The strong particle size increase after 6 h of ageing can be ascribed to partially vaterite recrystallization and adsorption of nano-scaled calcite crystallite nuclei at microparticles surfaces. The pH stability of the particles was shown by zeta potential changes and their adsorption capacity as a function of their composition, and characteristics were tested using methylene blue. The sorption capacity of composite materials was strongly influenced by the ratio between polymorphs in the composites, and increased with the increase of calcite content and ageing time.

Interactions between inorganic pigments and proteinaceous binders in reference paint reconstructions

The degradation of the proteinaceous binders, ovalbumin (OVA) and casein, and their interactions with azurite (Cu(3)(CO(3))(2)(OH)(2)), calcium carbonate (CaCO(3)), hematite (Fe(2)O(3)) and red lead (Pb(3)O(4)) pigments were studied. A multi-analytical approach based on Thermogravimetric Analysis (TG), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC) was used. The research was carried out on a set of paint reconstructions, which were analysed before and after artificial light ageing. We highlighted that in most cases the inorganic pigments interact with both proteins by decreasing their thermal stability and their intermolecular β-sheet content, and that ageing induces aggregation. We hypothesized that pigments intercalate between protein molecules, producing a partial disruption to the protein-protein intermolecular interaction. In the case of casein, these phenomena continued during ageing. In fact, we observed a complete disappearance of intermolecular β-sheets and an increase in intramolecular β-sheets and random coil during ageing. This result is in agreement with the structural properties of casein, whose aggregation is known to be induced by hydrophobic interactions. On the other hand, in aged OVA paint replicas, we observed the formation of new intermolecular β-sheets and an increase in thermostability. In addition FTIR showed oxidation of the side chains of the aged OVA/hematite sample and aged casein pigment samples, and SEC highlighted hydrolysis phenomena in aged carbonate, azurite and red lead/OVA complexes and in aged casein/calcium carbonate and casein/azurite samples.

The kinetics and mechanisms of nanoparticulate amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) crystallization to calcite, via vaterite, were studied at a range of environmentally relevant temperatures (7.5-25 °C) using synchrotron-based in situ time-resolved Energy Dispersive X-ray Diffraction (ED-XRD) in conjunction with high-resolution electron microscopy, ex situ X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy. The crystallization process occurs in two stages; firstly, the particles of ACC rapidly dehydrate and crystallize to form individual particles of vaterite; secondly, the vaterite transforms to calcite via a dissolution and reprecipitation mechanism with the reaction rate controlled by the surface area of calcite. The second stage of the reaction is approximately 10 times slower than the first. Activation energies of calcite nucleation and crystallization are 73±10 and 66±2 kJ mol(-1), respectively. A model to calculate the degree of calcite crystallization from ACC at environmentally relevant temperatures (7.5-40 °C) is also presented.

Dopamine-induced mineralization of calcium carbonate vaterite microspheres

Two biogenic materials from mussels are attracting attention from scientists: calcium carbonate (CaCO(3)), the most widely studied biomineral that composes the shell, or nacre, of mussels, and dopamine, a small catechol-containing biomimetic molecule of adhesive foot proteins secreted by mussels. We have incorporated these two materials into the biomimetic mineralization process to produce stable vaterite microspheres, which are the most unstable crystalline phase of CaCO(3). Spherical vaterite crystals were readily formed within two minutes in the presence of dopamine undergoing polymerization and were preserved for over two months in aqueous solution. The microspheres consisted of nanoparticles smaller than 100 nm and exhibited porous and spherulitic cross sections. The prolonged maintenance of spherical structure is attributed to the affinitive interaction between calcium in the vaterite microspheres and catechols from dopamine retarding the dissolution of vaterite and the growth of calcite crystals. The mussel-inspired inducement of a stable vaterite phase suggests a facile route for the synthesis of complex organic-inorganic hybrid materials utilizing biogenic systems.

Highly crystalline spindle-shaped mesoporous anatase titania particles: solution-phase synthesis, characterization, and photocatalytic properties

Spindlelike mesoporous anatase titania particles were directly synthesized at a low temperature (95 degrees C) by using an aqueous peroxotitanium solution with polyacrylamide (PAM). The mesoporous titania had a BET-specific surface area of 89.6 m(2) g(-1) and showed high crystallinity, thermal stability, and good photocatalytic activity in the degradation of rhodamine B. PAM, as an additive, was confirmed to be crucial in the evolution of the specific structure, morphology, and crystalline phase, and a possible formation mechanism was suggested.
