Understanding Plasmonic Properties in Metallic Nanostructures by Correlating Photonic and Electronic Excitations

Magnesium Nanoparticles for Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering and Plasmon-Driven Catalysis

Nanostructures of some metals can sustain localized surface plasmon resonances, collective oscillations of free electrons excited by incident light. This effect results in wavelength-dependent absorption and scattering, enhancement of the incident electric field at the metal surface, and generation of hot carriers as a decay product. The enhanced electric field can be utilized to amplify the spectroscopic signal in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), while hot carriers can be exploited for catalytic applications. In recent years, cheaper and more earth abundant alternatives to traditional plasmonic Au and Ag have gained growing attention. Here, we demonstrate the ability of plasmonic Mg nanoparticles to enhance Raman scattering and drive chemical transformations upon laser irradiation. The plasmonic properties of Mg nanoparticles are characterized at the bulk and single particle level by optical spectroscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy coupled with electron energy-loss spectroscopy and supported by numerical simulations. SERS enhancement factors of ∼102 at 532 and 633 nm are obtained using 4-mercaptobenzoic acid and 4-nitrobenzenethiol. Furthermore, the reductive coupling of 4-nitrobenzenethiol to 4,4'-dimercaptoazobenzene is observed on the surface of Mg nanoparticles under 532 nm excitation in the absence of reducing agents, indicating a plasmon-driven catalytic process. Once decorated with Pd, Mg nanostructures display an enhancement factor of 103 along with an increase in the rate of catalytic coupling. The results of this study demonstrate the successful application of plasmonic Mg nanoparticles in sensing and plasmon-enhanced catalysis.

Near-field transmission and reflection spectroscopy for revealing absorption and scattering characteristics of single silver nanoplates

Near-field optical microscopy visualizes spatial characteristics of elementary excitations induced in metal nanostructures. However, the microscopy is not able to reveal the absorption and scattering characteristics of the object simultaneously. In this study, we demonstrate a method for revealing the absorption and scattering characteristics of silver nanoplate by using near-field transmission and reflection spectroscopy. Near-field transmission and reflection images show characteristic spatial features attributable to the excited plasmon modes. The near-field refection image near the resonance shows a reversed contrast depending on the observed wavelength. Near-field reflection spectra show unique positive and negative resonant features. We reveal that the optical characteristics and the wavelength dependency of the optical contrast originate from the scattering and absorption properties of the plasmons, with the aid of the electromagnetic simulations.

Secondary Electron Imaging of Light at the Nanoscale

The interaction of fast electrons with metal atoms may lead to optical excitations. This exciting phenomenon forms the basis for the most powerful inspection methods in nanotechnology, such as cathodoluminescence and electron-energy loss spectroscopy. However, direct nanoimaging of light based on electrons is yet to be introduced. Here, we experimentally demonstrate simultaneous excitation and nanoimaging of optical signals using unmodified scanning electron microscope. We use high-energy electron beam for plasmon excitation and rapidly image the optical near fields using the emitted secondary electrons. We analyze dipole nanoantennas coupled with channel nanoplasmonic waveguides and observe both surface plasmons and surface plasmon polaritons with spatial resolution of 25 nm. Our experimental results are confirmed by rigorous numerical calculations based on full-wave solution of Maxwell's equations, showing high correlation between optical near fields and secondary electrons images. This demonstration of optical near-field mapping using direct electron imaging provides essential insights to the exciting relations between electrons plasmons and photons, paving the way toward secondary electron-based plasmon analysis at the nanoscale.

Tunneling-Electron-Induced Light Emission from Single Gold Nanoclusters

The coupling of tunneling electrons with the tip-nanocluster-substrate junction plasmon was investigated by monitoring light emission in a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). Gold atoms were evaporated onto the ∼5 Å thick Al2O3 thin film grown on the NiAl (110) surface where they formed nanoclusters 3-7 nm wide. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) of these nanoclusters revealed quantum-confined electronic states. Spatially resolved photon imaging showed localized emission hot spots. Size dependent study and light emission from nanocluster dimers further support the viewpoint that coupling of tunneling electrons to the junction plasmon is the main radiative mechanism. These results showed the potential of the STM to reveal the electronic and optical properties of nanoscale metallic systems in the confined geometry of the tunnel junction.

Probing plasmonic nanostructures by photons and electrons

We discuss recent developments for studying plasmonic metal nanostructures. Exploiting photons and electrons opens up new capabilities to probe the complete plasmon spectrum including bright and dark modes and related local optical fields at subnanometer spatial resolution. This comprehensive characterization of plasmonic properties of metal nanostructures provides new basic insight into the fundamental physics of "surface enhanced" spectroscopy in hottest hot spots and enables us to optimize plasmon supported processes and devices.

Mapping bright and dark modes in gold nanoparticle chains using electron energy loss spectroscopy

We present a scanning transmission electron microscopy-electron energy loss spectroscopy (STEM-EELS) investigation of gold nanosphere chains with lengths varying from 1 to 5 particles. We show localized EELS signals from the chains and identify energy-loss peaks arising due to l = 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 plasmon modes through the use of EELS mapping. We also show the evolution of the energy of these modes as the length of a given chain increases, and we find that a chain containing N particles can accommodate at least N experimentally observable modes, in addition to the transverse mode. As the chain length is increased by the addition of one more gold particle to the chain, the new N + 1 mode becomes the highest energy mode, while the existing modes lower their energy and eventually asymptote as they delocalize along the chain. We also show that modes become increasingly difficult to detect with the EELS technique as l approaches N. The data are compared to numerical simulations.

Observing optical plasmons on a single nanometer scale

The exceptional capability of plasmonic structures to confine light into deep subwavelength volumes has fashioned rapid expansion of interest from both fundamental and applicative perspectives. Surface plasmon nanophotonics enables to investigate light - matter interaction in deep nanoscale and harness electromagnetic and quantum properties of materials, thus opening pathways for tremendous potential applications. However, imaging optical plasmonic waves on a single nanometer scale is yet a substantial challenge mainly due to size and energy considerations. Here, for the first time, we use Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy (KPFM) under optical illumination to image and characterize plasmonic modes. We experimentally demonstrate unprecedented spatial resolution and measurement sensitivity both on the order of a single nanometer. By comparing experimentally obtained images with theoretical calculation results, we show that KPFM maps may provide valuable information on the phase of the optical near field. Additionally, we propose a theoretical model for the relation between surface plasmons and the material workfunction measured by KPFM. Our findings provide the path for using KPFM for high resolution measurements of optical plasmons, prompting the scientific frontier towards quantum plasmonic imaging on submolecular scales.

Probing the plasmonic near-field by one- and two-photon excited surface enhanced Raman scattering

Strongly enhanced and spatially confined near-fields in the vicinity of plasmonic nanostructures open up exciting new capabilities for photon-driven processes and particularly also for optical spectroscopy. Surface enhanced Raman signatures of single molecules can provide us with important information about the optical near-field. We discuss one- and two-photon excited surface enhanced Raman scattering at the level of single molecules as a tool for probing the plasmonic near-field of silver nanoaggregates. The experiments reveal enhancement factors of local fields in the hottest hot spots of the near-field and their dependence on the photon energy. Also, the number of the hottest spots and their approximate geometrical size are found. Near-field amplitudes in the hottest spots can be enhanced by three orders of magnitudes. Nanoaggregates of 100 nm dimensions provide one hot spot on this highest enhancement level where the enhancement is confined within less than 1nm dimension. The near-field enhancement in the hottest spots increases with decreasing photon energy.
