Conductivity and Solvation Dynamics in Ionic Liquids

Do Electrostatics Control the Diffusive Dynamics of Solitary Water? NMR and MD Studies of Water Translation and Rotation in Dipolar and Ionic Solvents

NMR-based measurements of the diffusion coefficients and rotation times of solitary water and benzene at 300 K are reported in a diverse collection of 13 conventional organic solvents and 10 imidazolium ionic liquids. Proton chemical shifts of water are found to be correlated to water OH-stretching frequencies, confirming the importance of electrostatic interactions in these shifts. However, the influence of magnetic interactions in aromatic solvents renders chemical shifts a less reliable indicator of electrostatics. Diffusion coefficients (DB) and rotational correlation times (τB) of benzene in the solvents examined are accurately described as functions of viscosity (η) by DB ∝ η-0.81 and τB ∝ η0.64. Literature values of DB and τB in alkane and normal alcohols, which were not included among the solvents studied here, are systematically faster than predicted by these correlations, indicating that factors beyond solvent viscosity play a role in determining the friction on benzene. In contrast to benzene, water diffusion and rotation are poorly described in terms of viscosity alone, even in the dipolar and ionic solvents measured here. The present data and the substantial literature data already available on dilute water diffusion show a systematic dependence of DW on solvent polarity among isoviscous solvents. The aspect of solvent polarity most relevant to water dynamics is the ability of a solvent to accept hydrogen bonds from water, as conveniently quantified by the frequency of water's OH stretching band, ΔνOH. The friction on translation, ζtr = kBT/DW, and rotation, ζrot = kBTτW, are both well correlated by functions of the form ζ(η, ΔνOH) = a1ηa2 exp (a3ΔνOH), where the ai are adjustable parameters. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal a strong coupling between electrostatic and nonelectrostatic water-solvent interactions, which makes it impossible to dissect the friction on water into additive dielectric and hydrodynamic components. Simulations also provide a tentative explanation for the unusual form of the correlating function ζ(η, ΔνOH), at least in the case of ζrot.

Collective Spectroscopy of Solvation Phenomena: Conflicts, Challenges, and Opportunities

Different spectroscopy types reveal different aspects of molecular processes in soft matter. In particular, collective observables can provide insights into intermolecular correlations invisible to the more popular single-particle methods. In this perspective we feature the dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS) with an emphasis on the proper interpretation of this complex observable aided by computational spectroscopy. While we focus on the history and recent advances of DRS in the fields of biomolecular hydration and nanoconfinement, the discussion transcends this particular field and provides a guide for how collective spectroscopy types supported by computational decomposition can be employed to further our understanding of soft matter phenomena.

Reorganization Energy of Electron Transfer in Ionic Liquids

Bandshape analysis of charge-transfer optical bands in room-temperature ionic liquids (ILs) was performed to extract the reorganization energy of electron transfer. Remarkably, the reorganization energies in ILs are close to those in cyclohexane. This result runs against common wisdom in the field since conducting ILs, which are characterized by an infinite static dielectric constant, and nonpolar cyclohexane fall to the opposite ends of the polarity scale based on their dielectric constants. Theoretical calculations employing structure factors of ILs from molecular dynamics simulations support the low values of the reorganization energy. Standard dielectric arguments do not apply to solvation in ILs, and nonergodic reorganization energies are required for a quantitative analysis.

Solvation Dynamics in Water. 4. On the Initial Regime of Solvation Relaxation

It is shown, by means of numerical and analytic work, that initial molecular momenta play little significant role in the initial fast solvation relaxation that follows electronic excitation of, and charge creation for, a standard model system of a solute in water. Instead, the nonequilibrium dynamics are predominantly described by noninertial "steering" by the torques directly generated by the newly created charge distribution. It is this process that largely overcomes inertia and drives the relaxation dynamics on a time scale of a few tens of femtoseconds in the key initial regime of the dynamics. These results are discussed in the context of commonly employed descriptions such as inertial, Gaussian, and underdamped dynamical behavior.

Characterizing the Magnitude and Structure-Dependence of Free Charge Density Gradients in Room-Temperature Ionic Liquids

We have reported previously on the existence of charge-induced long-range organization in the room-temperature ionic liquid (RTIL), BMIM⁺BF₄^-. The induced organization is in the form of a free charge density gradient (ρ_f) that exists over ca. 100 μm into the RTIL in contact with a charged surface. The fluorescence anisotropy decay of a trace-level charged chromophore in the RTIL is measured as a function of distance from the indium-doped tin oxide support surface to probe this free charge density gradient. We report here on the characterization of the free charge density gradient in five different imidazolium RTILs and use these data to evaluate the magnitude of the induced free charge density gradient. Both the extent and magnitude of this gradient depend on the chemical structures of the cationic and anionic constituents of the RTIL used. Control over the magnitude of ρ_f has implications for the utility of RTILs for a host of applications that remain to be explored fully.

Dielectric spectroscopy and time dependent Stokes shift: two faces of the same coin?

Different types of spectroscopy capture different aspects of dynamics and different ranges of intermolecular contributions.

Atomically precise understanding of nanofluids: nanodiamonds and carbon nanotubes in ionic liquids

A nanofluid (NF) is composed of a base liquid and suspended nanoparticles (NPs). High-performance NFs exhibit significantly better heat conductivities, as compared to their base liquids. In the present work, we applied all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to characterize diffusive and ballistic energy transfer mechanisms within nanodiamonds (NDs), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and N-butylpyridinium tetrafluoroborate ionic liquid (IL). We showed that heat transfer within both NDs and CNTs is orders of magnitude faster than that in the surrounding IL, whereas diffusion of all particles in the considered NF is similar. Intramolecular heat transfer in NPs is a key factor determining the difference of NFs from base liquids. Solvation free energy of NDs and CNTs in ILs was estimated from MD simulations. The geometric dimensions of NPs were shown to be a major source of entropic penalty. Temperature adjusts the entropic factor substantially by modifying a genuine local structure of the bulk base liquid. Our work contributes to engineering more stable and productive suspensions of NPs in ILs, which are necessary for essential progress in the field of NFs.

A review of the structure and dynamics of nanoconfined water and ionic liquids via molecular dynamics simulation

During the past decade, the research on fluids in nanoconfined geometries has received considerable attention as a consequence of their wide applications in different fields. Several nanoconfined systems such as water and ionic liquids, together with an equally impressive array of nanoconfining media such as carbon nanotube, graphene and graphene oxide have received increasingly growing interest in the past years. Water is the first system that has been reviewed in this article, due to its important role in transport phenomena in environmental sciences. Water is often considered as a highly nanoconfined system, due to its reduction to a few layers of water molecules between the extended surface of large macromolecules. The second system discussed here is ionic liquids, which have been widely studied in the modern green chemistry movement. Considering the great importance of ionic liquids in industry, and also their oil/water counterpart, nanoconfined ionic liquid system has become an important area of research with many fascinating applications. Furthermore, the method of molecular dynamics simulation is one of the major tools in the theoretical study of water and ionic liquids in nanoconfinement, which increasingly has been joined with experimental procedures. In this way, the choice of water and ionic liquids in nanoconfinement is justified by applying molecular dynamics simulation approaches in this review article.

Translational and Rotational Diffusion of Two Differently Charged Solutes in Ethylammonium Nitrate-Methanol Mixture: Does the Nanostructure of the Amphiphiles Influence the Motion of the Solute?

In this Article, we have investigated the translational and rotational diffusion of two structurally similar but differently charged solutes (rhodamine 6G perchlorate and fluorescein sodium salt) in ethylammonium nitrate (EAN)-methanol (CH3OH) mixture to understand the effect of added ionic liquid on the motion of the solutes. EAN and CH3OH both are amphiphilic molecules and characterized by an extended hydrogen bonding network. Recently, Russina et al. found that a wide distribution of clusters exist in the CH3OH rich region (0.10 ≤ χEAN ≤ 0.15) and EAN molecules preserve their bulk-sponge-like morphology (Russina, O.; Sferrazza, A.; Caminiti, R.; Triolo, A. J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 2014, 5, 1738-1742). The effect of this microheterogeneous mixture on the solute's motion shows some interesting results compared to other PIL (protic ionic liquid)-cosolvent mixtures. Analysis of the time-resolved anisotropy data with the aid of Stokes-Einstein-Debye (SED) hydrodynamic theory predicts that the reorientation time of both of the solutes appears close to the stick hydrodynamic line in the methanol rich region. The hydrogen bond accepting solutes experience specific interaction with CH3OH, and with increasing concentration of EAN, the specific interaction between the solute and solvent molecules is decreased while the decrease is more prominent in the low mole fraction of EAN due to the large size of cluster formation. The temperature dependent anisotropy measurements show that the hydrogen bonding interaction between EAN and CH3OH is increased with increasing temperature. Moreover, fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) shows the dynamic heterogeneity of the mixture which is due to the segregation of the alkyl chain of the PIL. Formation of a large cluster at a low mole fraction of IL (0.10 ≤ χEAN ≤ 0.15) can be proved by the insensitivity of the translational diffusion and rotational activation energy of the solutes to the concentration of EAN. Thus, the result of the work suggests that the addition of EAN to the CH3OH affects the specific interaction between solute and solvent and, as a consequence, the translational motion as well as the rotational motion of the solutes are modulated.

Rate and Amplitude Heterogeneity in the Solvation Response of an Ionic Liquid

In contrast with conventional liquids, ionic liquids have solvation dynamics with more rate dispersion and with average times that do not agree with dielectric measurements. A kinetic analog of multidimensional spectroscopy is introduced and used to look for heterogeneity in simulations of coumarin 153 in [Im12][BF4]. Strong heterogeneity is found in the diffusive solvation rate. An unanticipated heterogeneity in the amplitude of the inertial solvation is also seen. Both heterogeneities exchange at the same rate. This rate is similar to the mean diffusive solvation time, putting it in the intermediate-exchange region. Overall, there are multiple violations of the assumptions usually invoked in the theory of reaction dynamics.

Understanding Structure-Property Correlation in Monocationic and Dicationic Ionic Liquids through Combined Fluorescence and Pulsed-Field Gradient (PFG) and Relaxation NMR Experiments

Steady state, time-resolved fluorescence and NMR experiments are carried out to gain deeper insights into the structure-property correlation in structurally similar monocationic and dicationic room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs). The excitation wavelength dependent fluorescence response of fluorophore in 1-methy-3-propyllimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide [C3MIm][NTf2] is found to be different from that of 1,6-bis(3-methylimidazolium-1-yl)hexane bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide [C6(MIm)2][NTf2]2 and 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide [C6MIm][NTf2]. The outcomes of the present solvent dynamics study in [C3MIm][NTf2] when compared with those in [C6(MIm)2][NTf2]2 and in [C6MIm][NTf2] from our previous studies (Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 2014, 16, 12918-12928) indicate the involvement of dipolar rotation of imidazolium cation during solvation. To correlate the findings of solvation dynamics study with the dipolar rotation of the imidazolium ring, pulsed-field gradient (PFG)-NMR technique for translational diffusion coefficient measurement and (1)H as well as (19)F spin-lattice relaxation measurements are employed. NMR investigation reveals that an ultrafast component of solvation can be related to the dipolar rotation of imidazolium cation; hence, the role of dipolar rotation of cations in governing the dynamics of solvation in ILs cannot be ignored. Analysis of the rotational relaxation dynamics data by the Stokes-Einstein-Debye hydrodynamic theory unveils distinctive features of solute-solvent interaction in [C3MIm][NTf2] and [C6(MIm)2][NTf2]2.

Photophysics and Rotational Dynamics of a Hydrophilic Molecule in a Room Temperature Ionic Liquid

We have studied the photophysics and rotational diffusion of hydrophilic solute 7-(N, N'-diethylamino)coumarin-3-carboxylic acid (7-DCCA) in a room temperature ionic liquid methyltrioctylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide ([N1888 ][NTf2 ]). Comparison of activation energies of viscous flow and nonradiative decay shows that the photophysical properties of 7-DCCA are not guided by the bulk viscosity of the medium but are dependent on the specific solute solvent interaction and structural heterogeneity of the medium. The rotational relaxation behaviour of 7-DCCA in [N1888 ][NTf2] shows significant deviation from the Stokes Einstein Debye hydrodynamic model of rotational diffusion. This is indicative of the influence of specific solute solvent interaction on the rotational relaxation behaviour of 7-DCCA. Comparison of activation energy of rotational relaxation with activation energy of viscous flow clearly reinforces our assumption that the structural heterogeneity of the medium and specific solute solvent interaction plays a dominant role on the rotational diffusion instead of bulk viscosity.

Dielectric spectra of ionic liquids and their conversion to solvation dynamics: a detailed computational analysis of polarizable systems

For the three molecular ionic liquids 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, dielectric spectra were calculated from molecular dynamics simulations based on polarizable force fields. Using the reaction field continuum model the dielectric spectra were converted to the solvation dynamics of coumarin 153. It is shown in detail that the inclusion of the static conductivity in this model is essential. When simplifying the dielectric spectrum to the static conductivity hyperbola, the solvation response function becomes mono-exponential. Taking into account the frequency dependence of the conductivity, the typical two time-regimes of the solvation response function in ionic liquids are already obtained. However, the mean relaxation time remains the same. When converting the complete dielectric spectrum, i.e. also including frequency-dependent dielectric permittivity, quantitative changes are observed, but the qualitative shape is conserved. In accordance with previous experimental studies, solvation dynamics in ionic liquids predicted by the reaction field continuum model is too fast for longer times. This correlates with the suppression of the fine structure of the dielectric spectrum at low frequencies by the static conductivity hyperbola. By scaling down the static conductivity this effect can be partially amended. In addition to the impact of the solvent dielectric spectrum on solvation dynamics, solute-specific effects, i.e. anisotropy in shape and charge distribution as well as polarizability, were also studied.

Observations of probe dependence of the solvation dynamics in ionic liquids

Solvation and rotational dynamics of 4-aminophthalimide (4AP) in four ionic liquids (ILs) are measured using a combination of fluorescence upconversion spectroscopy and time-correlated single photon counting.

Do H-bonds explain strong ion aggregation in ethylammonium nitrate + acetonitrile mixtures?

Binary mixtures of the protic ionic liquid ethylammonium nitrate (EAN) and acetonitrile (AN) were studied at 25 °C over the entire composition range by means of broadband dielectric spectroscopy covering 0.2 ≤ ν/GHz ≤ 89. The dielectric spectra could be decomposed into two relaxation processes, both of which proved to be composite modes. For dilute solutions the higher-frequency Debye relaxation centered at ∼60 GHz is associated with the rotational diffusion of AN molecules, whereas at higher salt concentrations ultra-fast intermolecular vibrations and librations of EAN dominate the process. For EAN-rich solutions the lower-frequency relaxation is mainly due to jump reorientation of the ethylammonium cation, whereas contact ion pairs (CIPs) dominate this mode for dilute solutions. From the relaxation amplitudes effective solvation numbers and ion-pair concentrations were determined. For vanishing EAN mole fraction, xEAN → 0, an effective cation solvation number of ∼7 was found which steeply drops until xEAN ≈ 0.2 but shows only moderate decrease later on. The obtained association constant for EAN, K0(A) = 970 L mol(-1), exceeds that of other 1 : 1 electrolytes in AN by a factor of ∼30-50. This observation, as well as the fact that CIPs are formed despite strong cation solvation, indicates that ion pairing is mainly driven by the formation of strong hydrogen bonds between anions and cations.

In this perspective, we review the recent studies concerning the liquid structure and solvation dynamics of ionic liquids, and their influence upon electron transfer and charge transfer reactions.

Gradient Models in Molecular Biophysics: Progress, Challenges, Opportunities

In the interest of developing a bridge between researchers modeling materials and those modeling biological molecules, we survey recent progress in developing nonlocal-dielectric continuum models for studying the behavior of proteins and nucleic acids. As in other areas of science, continuum models are essential tools when atomistic simulations (e.g. molecular dynamics) are too expensive. Because biological molecules are essentially all nanoscale systems, the standard continuum model, involving local dielectric response, has basically always been dubious at best. The advanced continuum theories discussed here aim to remedy these shortcomings by adding features such as nonlocal dielectric response, and nonlinearities resulting from dielectric saturation. We begin by describing the central role of electrostatic interactions in biology at the molecular scale, and motivate the development of computationally tractable continuum models using applications in science and engineering. For context, we highlight some of the most important challenges that remain and survey the diverse theoretical formalisms for their treatment, highlighting the rigorous statistical mechanics that support the use and improvement of continuum models. We then address the development and implementation of nonlocal dielectric models, an approach pioneered by Dogonadze, Kornyshev, and their collaborators almost forty years ago. The simplest of these models is just a scalar form of gradient elasticity, and here we use ideas from gradient-based modeling to extend the electrostatic model to include additional length scales. The paper concludes with a discussion of open questions for model development, highlighting the many opportunities for the materials community to leverage its physical, mathematical, and computational expertise to help solve one of the most challenging questions in molecular biology and biophysics.
