Spatial Mapping of Sub-Bandgap States Induced by Local Nonstoichiometry in Individual Lead Sulfide Nanocrystals

Unraveling the structure-property relationship of novel thiophene and furan-fused cyclopentadienyl chromophores for nonlinear optical applications

Development of organic nonlinear optical materials has become progressively more important due to their emerging applications in new-generation photonic devices. A novel series of chromophores based on innovative thiophene and furan-fused cyclopentadienyl bridge with various powerful donor and acceptor moieties were designed and theoretically investigated for applications in nonlinear optics. To unravel the structure-property relationship between this new push-pull conjugated systems and their nonlinear optical property, multiple methods, including density of states analysis, coupled perturbed Kohn-Sham (CPKS) method, sum-over-states (SOS) model, the two-level model (TSM), hyperpolarizability density analysis, and the (hyper)polarizability contribution decomposition, were performed to comprehensively investigated the nonlinear optical and electronic properties of this new π-system. Due to excellent charge transfer ability of new bridge and distinctive structure of donor and acceptor, the designed chromophores exhibit deep HOMO levels, low excitation energy, high dipole moment difference and large hyperpolarizability, indicating the appealing air-stable property and remarkable electrooptic performance of them. Importantly, THQ-CS-A3 and PA-CS-A3 shows outstanding NLO response properties with βtot value of 6953.9 × 10-30 and 5066.0 × 10-30 esu in AN, respectively. The influence of the push-pull strength, the heterocycle and the π-conjugation of new bridge on the nonlinear optical properties of this novel powerful systems are clarified. This new series of chromophores exhibit remarkable electro-optical Pockels and optical rectification effect. More interestingly, PA-CS-A3 and THQ-CS-A2 also show appealing SHG effect. This study will help people understand the nature of nonlinear optical properties of innovative heteroarene-fused based cyclopentadienyl chromophores and offer guidance for the rational design of chromophores with outstanding electrooptic (EO) performance in the future.

A comprehensive electron wavefunction analysis toolbox for chemists, Multiwfn

Analysis of electron wavefunction is a key component of quantum chemistry investigations and is indispensable for the practical research of many chemical problems. After more than ten years of active development, the wavefunction analysis program Multiwfn has accumulated very rich functions, and its application scope has covered numerous aspects of theoretical chemical research, including charge distribution, chemical bond, electron localization and delocalization, aromaticity, intramolecular and intermolecular interactions, electronic excitation, and response property. This article systematically introduces the features and functions of the latest version of Multiwfn and provides many representative examples. Through this article, readers will be able to fully understand the characteristics and recognize the unique value of Multiwfn. The source code and precompiled executable files of Multiwfn, as well as the manual containing a detailed introduction to theoretical backgrounds and very rich tutorials, can all be downloaded for free from the Multiwfn website (http://sobereva.com/multiwfn).

Application of Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and Spectroscopy in the Studies of Colloidal Quantum Qots

Colloidal quantum dots display remarkable optical and electrical characteristics with the potential for extensive applications in contemporary nanotechnology. As an ideal instrument for examining surface topography and local density of states (LDOS) at an atomic scale, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) has become indispensable approaches to gain better understanding of their physical properties. This article presents a comprehensive review of the research advancements in measuring the electronic orbits and corresponding energy levels of colloidal quantum dots in various systems using STM and STS. The first three sections introduce the basic principles of colloidal quantum dots synthesis and the fundamental methodology of STM research on quantum dots. The fourth section explores the latest progress in the application of STM for colloidal quantum dot studies. Finally, a summary and prospective is presented.

Optoelectronic Properties of Semiconductor Quantum Dot Solids for Photovoltaic Applications

Quantum dot (QD) solids represent a new type of condensed matter drawing high fundamental and applied interest. Quantum confinement in individual QDs, combined with macroscopic scale whole materials, leads to novel exciton and charge transfer features that are particularly relevant to optoelectronic applications. This Perspective discusses the structure of semiconductor QD solids, optical and spectral properties, charge carrier transport, and photovoltaic applications. The distance between adjacent nanoparticles and surface ligands influences greatly electrostatic interactions between QDs and, hence, charge and energy transfer. It is almost inevitable that QD solids exhibit energetic disorder that bears many similarities to disordered organic semiconductors, with charge and exciton transport described by the multiple trapping model. QD solids are synthesized at low cost from colloidal solutions by casting, spraying, and printing. A judicious selection of a layer sequence involving QDs with different size, composition, and ligands can be used to harvest sunlight over a wide spectral range, leading to inexpensive and efficient photovoltaic devices.

Quantum Dot Surface Engineering: Toward Inert Fluorophores with Compact Size and Bright, Stable Emission

The surfaces of colloidal nanocrystals are complex interfaces between solid crystals, coordinating ligands, and liquid solutions. For fluorescent quantum dots, the properties of the surface vastly influence the efficiency of light emission, stability, and physical interactions, and thus determine their sensitivity and specificity when they are used to detect and image biological molecules. But after more than 30 years of study, the surfaces of quantum dots remain poorly understood and continue to be an important subject of both experimental and theoretical research. In this article, we review the physics and chemistry of quantum dot surfaces and describe approaches to engineer optimal fluorescent probes for applications in biomolecular imaging and sensing. We describe the structure and electronic properties of crystalline facets, the chemistry of ligand coordination, and the impact of ligands on optical properties. We further describe recent advances in compact coatings that have significantly improved their properties by providing small hydrodynamic size, high stability and fluorescence efficiency, and minimal nonspecific interactions with cells and biological molecules. While major progress has been made in both basic and applied research, many questions remain in the chemistry and physics of quantum dot surfaces that have hindered key breakthroughs to fully optimize their properties.

Mapping of Defects in Individual Silicon Nanocrystals Using Real-Space Spectroscopy

The photophysical properties of silicon semiconductor nanocrystals (SiNCs) are extremely sensitive to the presence of surface chemical defects, many of which are easily produced by oxidation under ambient conditions. The diversity of chemical structures of such defects and the lack of tools capable of probing individual defects continue to impede understanding of the roles of these defects in SiNC photophysics. We use scanning tunneling spectroscopy to study the impact of surface defects on the electronic structures of hydrogen-passivated SiNCs supported on the Au(111) surface. Spatial maps of the local electronic density of states (LDOS) produced by our measurements allowed us to identify locally enhanced defect-induced states as well as quantum-confined states delocalized throughout the SiNC volume. We use theoretical calculations to show that the LDOS spectra associated with the observed defects are attributable to Si-O-Si bridged oxygen or Si-OH surface defects.

Diversity of sub-bandgap states in lead-sulfide nanocrystals: real-space spectroscopy and mapping at the atomic-scale

Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals have emerged as a promising class of technological materials with optoelectronic properties controllable through quantum-confinement effects. Despite recent successes in this field, an important factor that remains difficult to control is the impact of the nanocrystal surface structure on the photophysics and electron transport in nanocrystal-based materials. In particular, the presence of surface defects and irregularities can result in the formation of localized sub-bandgap states that can dramatically affect the dynamics of charge carriers and electronic excitations. Here we use Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy (STS) to investigate, in real space, sub-bandgap states in individual ligand-free PbS nanocrystals. In the majority of studied PbS nanocrystals, spatial mapping of electronic density of states with STS shows atomic-scale variations attributable to the presence of surface reconstructions. STS spectra show that the presence of surface reconstructions results in formation of surface-bound sub-bandgap electronic states. The nature of the surface reconstruction varies depending on the surface stoichiometry, with lead-rich surfaces producing unoccupied sub-bandgap states, and sulfur-rich areas producing occupied sub-bandgap states. Highly off-stoichiometric areas produce both occupied and unoccupied states showing dramatically reduced bandgaps. Different reconstruction patterns associated with specific crystallographic directions are also found for different nanocrystals. This study provides insight into the mechanisms of sub-bandgap state formation that, in a modified form, are likely to be applicable to ligand-passivated nanocrystal surfaces, where steric hindrance between ligands can result in under-coordination of surface atoms.
