Dynamic templating of colloidal patterns in three dimensions with nonuniform electric fields

Multidomain Oriented Particle Chains Based on Spatial Electric Field and Their Optical Application

The manipulation technology of particles is significant in drug screening, disease detection and treatment, etc. Here, we reported the multidomain oriented particle chains based on a spatial electric field and their optical application. According to the differences in the dielectric behavior of particles, the preparation of multidomain oriented particle chains in the gel was successfully realized by using the dielectrophoretic force and electroosmotic rotation. This provides a new idea for manufacturing multistructure, multilayer, and multifunctional intelligent response materials. In addition, the factors affecting the alignment height of the particles in the gel were discussed, which was the basis for the preparation of bilayer particle chains. As an example of structural hierarchy, particle assembly has broad application prospects in optoelectronic devices and soft robots.

Assembling Magnetic Nanoparticles on Nanomechanical Resonators for Torque Magnetometry

We report a highly compliant process for patterning nanoparticle arrays on micro- and nanomechanical devices. The distinctive step involves the single layer self-assembled nanoparticles on top of released nanomechanical devices. We demonstrate the process by fabricating sizable arrays of nanomechanical devices on silicon-on-insulator substrates, acting as nanomechanical torque magnetometers. Later, the nanoparticles were self-assembled in geometrical shapes on top of the devices by a unique combination of top-down and bottom-up methods. The self-assembled array of nanoparticles successfully showed a magnetic torque signal by magnetic actuation of the magnetometer. This patterning process can be generalized for any shape and for a wide range of nanoparticles on the nanomechanical resonators.

Tools and Functions of Reconfigurable Colloidal Assembly

We review work in reconfigurable colloidal assembly, a field in which rapid, back-and-forth transitions between the equilibrium states of colloidal self-assembly are accomplished by dynamic manipulation of the size, shape, and interaction potential of colloids, as well as the magnitude and direction of the fields applied to them. It is distinguished from the study of colloidal phase transitions by the centrality of thermodynamic variables and colloidal properties that are time switchable; by the applicability of these changes to generate transitions in assembled colloids that may be spatially localized; and by its incorporation of the effects of generalized potentials due to, for example, applied electric and magnetic fields. By drawing upon current progress in the field, we propose a matrix classification of reconfigurable colloidal systems based on the tool used and function performed by reconfiguration. The classification distinguishes between the multiple means by which reconfigurable assembly can be accomplished (i.e., the tools of reconfiguration) and the different kinds of structural transitions that can be achieved by it (i.e., the functions of reconfiguration). In the first case, the tools of reconfiguration can be broadly classed as (i) those that control the colloidal contribution to the system entropy-as through volumetric and/or shape changes of the particles; (ii) those that control the internal energy of the colloids-as through manipulation of colloidal interaction potentials; and (iii) those that control the spatially resolved potential energy that is imposed on the colloids-as through the introduction of field-induced phoretic mechanisms that yield colloidal displacement and accumulation. In the second case, the functions of reconfiguration include reversible: (i) transformation between different phases-including fluid, cluster, gel, and crystal structures; (ii) manipulation of the spacing between colloids in crystals and clusters; and (iii) translation, rotation, or shape-change of finite-size objects self-assembled from colloids. With this classification in hand, we correlate the current limits on the spatiotemporal scales for reconfigurable colloidal assembly and identify a set of future research challenges.

Spontaneous Rotation of Nonlinear Pattern Formed by Aqueous Colloidal Suspension between ITO Electrodes during Electrolysis Perpendicular to Gravity

A colloidal fluid is found to rotate spontaneously during electrolysis when gravity acts perpendicular to the direction of an applied electric field. An aqueous dispersion containing charged colloidal particles is placed inside an O-ring sandwiched between two parallel ITO electrodes. A clip is used to hold the assembly together to prevent the liquid from leaking out. The assembly is positioned such that the electrodes stand vertically, i.e., the electric field during electrolysis points perpendicular to gravity. When a direct-current voltage is applied to initiate the electrolysis of water, a nonlinear colloidal pattern is formed by electroconvective flow. Moreover, the entire fluid rotates spontaneously about the O-ring center with a constant angular velocity. The rotational dynamics are governed by how strong and where the assembly is clipped relative to the gravitational direction. A new phenomenological relationship between the angular velocity, compression vector, and gravity is derived. Coupling of an electrochemical reduction reaction of the ITO film with electroconvection during electrolysis is proposed as a mechanism for the rotational motion.

Colloidal Switches by Electric and Magnetic Fields

External electric and magnetic fields have already been proven to be a versatile tool to control the particle assembly; however, the degree of control of the dynamics and versatility of the produced structures is expected to increase if both can be implemented simultaneously. For example, while micromagnets can rapidly assemble superparamagnetic particles, repeated, rapid disassembly or reassembly is not trivial because of the remanence and coercivity of metals used in such applications. Here, an interdigitated design of micromagnet and microfabricated electrodes enables rapid switching of colloids between their magnetic and electric potential minima. Active control over colloids between two such adjacent potential minima enables a fast on/off mechanism, which is potentially important for optical switches or display technologies. Moreover, we demonstrate that the response time of the colloids between these states is on the order of tens of milliseconds, which is tunable by electric field strength. By carefully designing the electrode pattern, our strategy enables the switchable assembly of single particles down to few microns and also hierarchical assemblies containing many particles. Our work on precise dynamic control over the particle position would open new avenues to find potential applications in optical switches and display technologies.

Colloidal assembly and 3D shaping by dielectrophoretic confinement

For decades, scientists and engineers have strived to design means of assembling colloids into ordered structures. By now, the literature is quite peppered with reports of colloidal assemblies. However, the available methods can assemble only a narrow range of structures or are applicable to specific types of colloids. There are still only few generic methods that would lead to arbitrary colloidal arrays or would shape colloidal assemblies into predesigned structures. Here, we first discuss in detail how to spatially control the assembly and crystallization of colloids through the balance of dielectrophoretic and dipolar forces. Furthermore, we demonstrate how to flexibly program and shape arrays of 3D microstructures that can be permanently affixed by in situ UV polymerization and calcination by using two facing similar or distinct micro-fabricated electrodes.

Multiscale directed self-assembly of composite microgels in complex electric fields

This study explored the application of localized electric fields for reversible directed self-assembly of colloidal particles in 3 dimensions. Electric field microgradients, arising from the use of micro-patterned electrodes, were utilized to direct the localization and self-assembly of polarizable (charged) particles resulting from a combination of dielectrophoretic and multipolar forces. Deionized dispersions of spherical and ellipsoidal core-shell microgels were employed for investigating their assembly under an external alternating electric field. We demonstrated that the frequency of the field allowed for an exquisite control over the localization of the particles and their self-assembled structures near the electrodes. We extended this approach to concentrated binary dispersions consisting of polarizable and less polarizable composite microgels. Furthermore, we utilized the thermosensitivity of the microgels to adjust the effective volume fraction and the dynamics of the system, which provided the possibility to dynamically "solidify" the assembly of the field-responsive particles by a temperature quench from their initial fluid state into an arrested crystalline state. Reversible solidification enables us to re-write/reconstruct various 3 dimensional assemblies by varying the applied field frequency.

Contact-Free Templating of 3-D Colloidal Structures Using Spatially Nonuniform AC Electric Fields

The formation of ordered and regularly shaped structures of colloidal particles with the aid of spatially nonuniform electric fields is a modern research area of great interest. This work illustrates how alternating current (AC) electrokinetic effects (dielectrophoresis, electroosmosis) can serve as contact-free templates, inside which colloidal microspheres can assemble into a variety of shapes and sizes. We show how three-dimensional colloidal structures of square, circular, and diamond shape of many tens of micrometers in size can be reproducibly formed with a single set of quadrupolar microelectrodes. Numerical simulations performed help to explain the role of AC electroosmosis and AC dielectrophoresis on the shaping of these structures as a function of applied voltage and frequency. We also demonstrate how the templating repertoire is further enhanced with the simultaneous application of a second, individually controlled AC electric field, which enables a variety of asymmetric colloidal structures to be produced using the same set of quadrupolar microelectrodes. As the preservation of shape and size of such electric-field templated structures after medium evaporation still remains a big challenge, here we also report on a novel method that permits the stabilization and isolation of these particle assemblies through medium gelation and subsequent hydrogel removal with a UV/ozone treatment.

Periodically microstructured composite films made by electric- and magnetic-directed colloidal assembly

Living organisms often combine soft and hard anisotropic building blocks to fabricate composite materials with complex microstructures and outstanding mechanical properties. An optimum design and assembly of the anisotropic components reinforces the material in specific directions and sites to best accommodate multidirectional external loads. Here, we fabricate composite films with periodic modulation of the soft-hard microstructure by simultaneously using electric and magnetic fields. We exploit forefront directed-assembly approaches to realize highly demanded material microstructural designs and showcase a unique example of how one can bridge colloidal sciences and composite technology to fabricate next-generation advanced structural materials. In the proof-of-concept experiments, electric fields are used to dictate the position of the anisotropic particles through dielectrophoresis, whereas a rotating magnetic field is used to control the orientation of the particles. By using such unprecedented control over the colloidal assembly process, we managed to fabricate ordered composite microstructures with up to 2.3-fold enhancement in wear resistance and unusual site-specific hardness that can be locally modulated by a factor of up to 2.5.

Sequential tasks performed by catalytic pumps for colloidal crystallization

Gold-platinum catalytic pumps immersed in a chemical fuel are used to manipulate silica colloids. The manipulation relies on the electric field and the fluid flow generated by the pump. Catalytic pumps perform various tasks, such as the repulsion of colloids, the attraction of colloids, and the guided crystallization of colloids. We demonstrate that catalytic pumps can execute these tasks sequentially over time. Switching from one task to the next is related to the local change of the proton concentration, which modifies the colloid ζ potential and, consequently, the electric force acting on the colloids.

Packing confined hard spheres denser with adaptive prism phases

We show that hard spheres confined between two parallel hard plates pack denser with periodic adaptive prismatic structures which are composed of alternating prisms of spheres. The internal structure of the prisms adapts to the slit height which results in close packings for a range of plate separations, just above the distance where three intersecting square layers fit exactly between the plates. The adaptive prism phases are also observed in real-space experiments on confined sterically stabilized colloids and in Monte Carlo simulations at finite pressure.

AC electrokinetic templating of colloidal particle assemblies: effect of electrohydrodynamic flows

The use of spatially nonuniform electric fields for the contact-free colloidal particle assembly into ordered structures of various length scales is a research area of great interest. In the present work, numerical simulations are undertaken in order to advance our understanding of the physical mechanisms that govern this colloidal assembly process and their relation to the electric field characteristics and colloidal system properties. More specifically, the electric-field driven assembly of colloidal silica (d(p) = 0.32 and 2 μm) in DMSO, a near index matching fluid, is studied numerically over a range of voltages and concentration by means of a continuum thermodynamic approach. The equilibrium (u(f) = 0) and nonequilibrium (u(f) ≠ 0) cases were compared to determine whether fluid motion had an effect on the shape and size of assemblies. It was found that the nonequilibrium case was substantially different versus the equilibrium case, in both size and shape of the assembled structure. This dependence was related to the relative magnitudes of the electric-field driven convective motion of particles versus the fluid velocity. Fluid velocity magnitudes on the order of mm/s were predicted for 0.32 μm particles at 1% initial solids content, and the induced fluid velocity was found to be larger at the same voltage/initial volume fraction as the particle size decreased, owing to a larger contribution from entropic forces.
