Stabilization of iron oxide nanoparticles in high sodium and calcium brine at high temperatures with adsorbed sulfonated copolymers

Biogeochemical characterization of four depleted gas reservoirs for conversion into underground hydrogen storage

Depleted gas reservoirs are a valuable option for underground hydrogen storage (UHS). However, different classes of microorganisms, which are capable of using free H2 as a reducing agent for their metabolism, inhabit deep underground formations and can potentially affect the storage. This study integrates metagenomics based on Illumina-NGS sequencing of bacterial and archaeal 16S rRNA and dsrB and mcrA functional genes to unveil the composition and the variability of indigenous microbial populations of four Italian depleted reservoirs. The obtained mcrA sequences allow us to implement the existing taxonomic database for mcrA gene sequences with newly classified sequences obtained from the Italian gas reservoirs. Moreover, the KEGG and COG predictive functional annotation was used to highlight the metabolic pathways potentially associated with hydrogenotrophic metabolisms. The analyses revealed the specificity of each reservoir microbial community, and taxonomic and functional data highlighted the presence of an enriched number of taxa, whose activity depends on both reservoir hydrochemical composition and nutrient availability, of potential relevance in the context of UHS. This study is the very first to address the profiling of the microbial population and allowed us to perform a preliminary assessment of UHS feasibility in Italy.

Comparative study on effects of pH, electrolytes, and humic acid on the stability of acetic and polyacrylic acid coated magnetite nanoparticles

The poor colloidal stability of magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) limits their mobility and application, so various organic coatings (OCs) were applied to MNPs. Here, a comparative study on the colloidal stability of MNPs coated with acetic (HAc) and polyacrylic acids (PAA) was conducted under varied pH (5.0-9.0) in the presence of different concentrations of cations and anions, as well as humic acid (HA). Comparing the effects of various cations and anions, the stability of both HAc/PAA-MNPs followed the order: Na⁺ > Ca²⁺and PO₄^3- > SO₄^2- > Cl^-, which could be explained by their adsorption behaviors onto HAc/PAA-MNPs and the resulting surface charge changes. Under all conditions even with more anion adsorption onto HAc-MNPs (0.14-22.56 mg/g) than onto PAA-MNPs (0.04-18.34 mg/g), PAA-MNPs were more negatively charged than HAc-MNPs, as PAA has a lower pH_IEP (2.6 ± 0.1) than that of HAc (3.7 ± 0.1). Neither the HAc nor PAA coatings were displaced by phosphate even at considerably high phosphate concentration. Compared with HAc-MNPs, the stability of PAA-MNPs was greatly improved under all studied conditions, which could be due to both stronger electrostatic and additional steric repulsion forces among PAA-MNPs. Besides, under all conditions, Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) explained well the aggregation kinetic of HAc-MNPs; while extended DLVO (EDLVO) successfully predict that of PAA-MNPs, indicating steric forces among PAA-MNPs. The aggregation of HAc/PAA-MNPs was all inhibited in varied electrolyte solutions by HA (2 mg C/L) addition. This study suggested that carboxyl coatings with higher molecular weights and pK_a values could stabilize MNPs better due to stronger electrostatic and additional steric repulsion. However, in the presence of HA, these two forces were mainly controlled by adsorbed HA instead of the organic pre-coatings on MNPs.

Potential use of engineered nanoparticles in ocean fertilization for large-scale atmospheric carbon dioxide removal

Artificial ocean fertilization (AOF) aims to safely stimulate phytoplankton growth in the ocean and enhance carbon sequestration. AOF carbon sequestration efficiency appears lower than natural ocean fertilization processes due mainly to the low bioavailability of added nutrients, along with low export rates of AOF-produced biomass to the deep ocean. Here we explore the potential application of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) to overcome these issues. Data from 123 studies show that some ENPs may enhance phytoplankton growth at concentrations below those likely to be toxic in marine ecosystems. ENPs may also increase bloom lifetime, boost phytoplankton aggregation and carbon export, and address secondary limiting factors in AOF. Life-cycle assessment and cost analyses suggest that net CO₂ capture is possible for iron, SiO₂ and Al₂O₃ ENPs with costs of 2-5 times that of conventional AOF, whereas boosting AOF efficiency by ENPs should substantially enhance net CO₂ capture and reduce these costs. Therefore, ENP-based AOF can be an important component of the mitigation strategy to limit global warming.

Transport of polymer-coated metal-organic framework nanoparticles in porous media

Injecting fluids into deep underground geologic structures is a critical component to development of long-term strategies for managing greenhouse gas emissions and facilitating energy extraction operations. Recently, we reported that metal-organic frameworks are low-frequency, absorptive-acoustic metamaterial that may be injected into the subsurface to enhance geophysical monitoring tools used to track fluids and map complex structures. A key requirement for this nanotechnology deployment is transportability through porous geologic media without being retained by mineral-fluid interfaces. We used flow-through column studies to estimate transport and retention properties of five different polymer-coated MIL-101(Cr) nanoparticles (NP) in siliceous porous media. When negatively charged polystyrene sulfonate coated nanoparticles (NP-PSS-70K) were transported in 1 M NaCl, only about 8.4% of nanoparticles were retained in the column. Nanoparticles coated with polyethylenimine (NP-PD1) exhibited significant retention (> 50%), emphasizing the importance of complex nanoparticle-fluid-rock interactions for successful use of nanofluid technologies in the subsurface. Nanoparticle transport experiments revealed that nanoparticle surface characteristics play a critical role in nanoparticle colloidal stability and as well the transport.

Aggregation of varied organic coated magnetite nanoparticles: Adsorbed mass and thickness of coatings and interactions with natural organic matter

Magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) with varied organic coatings (OCs) which improved their stability have broad environmental applications. However, the adsorbed amounts and layer thickness of varied OCs onto MNPs during the synthesis were generally not or poorly characterized, and their interactions with natural organic matter (NOM) were still in progress. In this study, acetic (HAc), citric (CA), and polyacrylic acid (PAA) were selected as model OCs, the adsorption behaviors of OCs on MNPs were characterized under varied aqueous C/Fe ratios, and the aggregation behaviors of MNPs with varied OCs (OC-MNPs) at neutral pH (7.0 ± 0.2) with NaCl (5-800 mM) in the presence/absence of NOM were systematically investigated. Under low aqueous C/Fe ratio, the adsorbed amounts of model OCs as -COOH/Fe ratio followed the order: CA ≈ PAA > > HAc. With high aqueous C/Fe ratio, the maximum adsorbed masses of OC-MNPs were similar. The adsorbed layer thicknesses of OC-MNPs were thoroughly characterized using three different methods, all showing that the adsorbed layer of PAA was thicker than that of CA and HAc. Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) and extended DLVO (EDLVO) calculations showed that electrostatic and van der Waals forces were dominant for CA-MNPs and HAc-MNPs stabilization; while steric repulsion played major roles in stabilizing PAA-MNPs, probably due to a thicker PAA layer. In the presence of NOM, stability behaviors of all OC-MNPs were similar, ascribing to the much greater amounts of NOM adsorbed than the OCs, causing greater steric repulsion. This study provides new mechanistic insights which could help better understand the effects of varied OCs on MNPs' colloidal stability.

Newly engineered alumina quantum dot-based nanofluid in enhanced oil recovery at reservoir conditions

In this work, a newly engineered alumina quantum dot-based nanofluid (α-AQDs; D ~ 4 nm; amorphous solid) and one commercial alumina nanoparticle-based nanofluid (γ-ANPs; D ~ 20 nm; crystalline type) with the capability of strong colloidal dispersion at reservoir conditions, such as, high salinity, divalent ions (Ca²⁺) and high temperature was compared. The main goal of this research was to study the crude oil displacement mechanisms of alumina suspensions as a function of variety in size and particle morphology in aged carbonate rocks. The strong interaction potential between the particles was achieved by the citric acid and a special composition of a carboxylate-sulfonate-based polyelectrolyte polymer as an effective dispersant compound on the surface, leading to a negative particle charges and an additional steric and electrostatic repulsion. Wettability alteration upon exposure to fluids using the contact angle and the Amott cell were performed on saturated carbonate plug samples and rock slices. While, dynamic core displacements were conducted to test the water/nanofluid/oil flow and nanoparticle retention behavior thorough typical pore throats underground the reservoir conditions. The stability results revealed that PE-polymer was able to create a long-term colloidal fluid during 30 days. It was found that mass concentration of nanofluid increased with decreasing in particle size. The optimal amount of particles in aqueous solution was obtained 0.05 wt% for ANPs, increased up to 0.1 wt% for AQDs. Analysis of experiments showed that wettability alteration was the main mechanism during nanofluid injection. Laboratory core-flooding data proved that the enhanced oil recovery due to a less concentration state by ANPs was consistent with AQDs at higher concentrations. In addition, permeability-impairment-behavior study was discussed in terms of possible mineral scale deposition and alumina release on the rock surface. Results showed that a large extent of permeability damage caused by mineral scale (55-59%). Alumina quantum dot-based nanofluids were found a minimum impairment (2-4%) and a significant reduction of ~ 10% in permeability was observed for ANPs-based nanofluid.

Ionic strength dependent forces between end-grafted Poly(sulfobetaine) films and mica

The molecular surface properties of zwitterionic polymer coatings are central to their ultra-low fouling properties and effectiveness as steric stabilizers in concentrated salt solutions. Here, Surface Force Apparatus measurements quantified the molecular forces between end-grafted poly(sulfobetaine) methacrylate thin films and mica, as a function of the chain grafting density and ionic strength. These results demonstrate that, at the ionic strengths considered, end-grafted poly(sulfobetaine) films can be described by models for polymers in good solvent. Parameters determined from data fits to the Milner-Witten-Cates or Dolan and Edwards models for dense or dilute chains, respectively, varied with ionic strength, in ways that reflect poly(sulfobetaine) swelling and the increased excluded volume strength of chain segments. These force measurements provide new insight into how polymer coverage and salt cooperate to regulate repulsive poly(sulfobetaine) steric barriers. These findings have implications for the design of grafted poly(sulfobetaine) as colloidal stabilizers or nonfouling surface coatings.

Underground hydrogen storage: Influencing parameters and future outlook

Underground hydrogen storage (UHS) is a promising technology with which large quantities of H₂ can potentially be stored in the subsurface safely, economically and efficiently. As UHS is a relatively new technology, we critically reviewed all available data related to solid properties, fluid properties and solid-fluid interactions relevant to UHS. We also provide clear conclusions, and highlight research gaps. This review therefore advances fundamental understanding of UHS at multiple physical scales and provides key guidance for UHS project operations at reservoir scale.

Libraries of Uniform Magnetic Multicore Nanoparticles with Tunable Dimensions for Biomedical and Photonic Applications

Multicore iron oxide nanoparticles, also known as colloidal nanocrystal clusters, are magnetic materials with diverse applications in biomedicine and photonics. Here, we examine how both of their characteristic dimensional features, the primary particle and sub-micron colloid diameters, influence their magnetic properties and performance in two different applications. The characterization of these basic size-dependent properties is enabled by a synthetic strategy that provides independent control over both the primary nanocrystal and cluster dimensions. Over a wide range of conditions, electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction reveal that the oriented attachment of smaller nanocrystals results in their crystallographic alignment throughout the entire superstructure. We apply a sulfonated polymer with high charge density to prevent cluster aggregation and conjugate molecular dyes to particle surfaces so as to visualize their collection using handheld magnets. These libraries of colloidal clusters, indexed both by primary nanocrystal dimension (d_p) and overall cluster diameter (D_c), form magnetic photonic crystals with relatively weak size-dependent properties. In contrast, their performance as MRI T₂ contrast agents is highly sensitive to cluster diameter, not primary particle size, and is optimized for materials of 50 nm diameter (r₂ = 364 mM^-1 s^-1). These results exemplify the relevance of dimensional control in developing applications for these versatile materials.

Brine-Soluble Zwitterionic Copolymers with Tunable Adsorption on Rocks

Injection of aqueous fluids into reservoirs as an enhanced oil recovery (EOR) tool has been of great interest in petroleum engineering. EOR using viscous polymer solutions improves the volumetric sweep efficiency. However, significant polymer adsorption on reservoir rock surfaces is one of the greatest challenges in polymer-flooding EOR. We have synthesized and characterized five zwitterionic copolymers and studied their static adsorption on limestone surfaces in seawater at high temperatures and salinities. Our results indicate that polymer adsorption directly correlates to a small percentage of functional co-monomers on the polymer backbone. One particular copolymer shows negligible static adsorption on limestone surfaces.

Effect of Polymer Surface Modification of Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticle Dispersions in High Salinity Environments

Superparamagnetic nanoparticles (SPIONs) can be used as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) signal enhancement agents for petroleum exploration. This enhancement effect is uniform if SPIONs are monodisperse in size and in composition; yet it is challenging to synthesize monodisperse particles that do not aggregate in high salinity petroleum brine. Here, we report a method to synthesize individual SPIONs coated with tunable surface coating densities of poly(2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (pAMPS) with a catechol end-group (pAMPS*). To establish parameters under which pAMPS*-coated SPIONS do not aggregate, we compared computational predictions with experimental results for variations in pAMPS* chain length and surface coverage. Using this combined theoretical and experimental approach, we show that singly dispersed SPIONs remained stabilized in petroleum brine for up to 75 h with high surface density pAMPS*.

Thermostable iron oxide nanoparticle synthesis within recombinant ferritins from the hyperthermophile Pyrococcus yayanosii CH1

Thermostable nanoparticles have numerous applications in catalysis and in the oil/gas industry. However, synthesizing these nanoparticles requires expensive polymers. Here, a novel thermostable ferritin named PcFn, originally from the hyperthermophilic archaeon Pyrococcus yayanosii CH1, was overexpressed in Escherichia coli, purified and characterized, which could successfully direct the synthesis of thermostable magnetoferritins (M-PcFn) with monodispersed iron oxide nanoparticles in one step. Transmission electron microscopy and magnetic measurements show that the cores of the M-PcFn have an average diameter of 4.7 nm, are well-crystalline and superparamagnetic. Both the PcFn and M-PcFn can resist temperatures up to 110 °C, which is significantly higher than for human H-chain ferritin (HFn) and M-HFn, and comparable to temperatures previously reported for Pyrococcus furiosus ferritin (PfFn) and M-PfFn. After heating at 110 °C for 30 minutes, PcFn and M-PcFn maintained their secondary structures and PcFn retained 87.4% of its iron uptake activity. This remarkable thermostability of PcFn and M-PcFn suggests potential applications in elevated temperature environments.

Ultra-Stable Silica Nanoparticles as Nano-Plugging Additive for Shale Exploitation in Harsh Environments

Owing to the harsh downhole environments, poor dispersion of silica at high salinity and high temperature can severely restrict its application as the nano-plugging agent in shale gas exploitation. The objective of this study is to improve salt tolerance and thermal stability of silica. Herein, silica was successfully functionalized with an anionic polymer (p SPMA) by SI-ATRP (surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization), named SiO2-g-SPMA. The grafted pSPMA brushes on silica provided sufficient electrostatic repulsion and steric repulsion for stabilizing silica in a harsh environment. The modified silica (SiO2-g-SPMA) had excellent colloidal stability at salinities up to 5.43 M NaCl (saturated brine) and standard API brine (8 wt% NaCl + 2 wt% CaCl2) for 30 days at room temperature. Simultaneously, the SiO2-g-SPMA was stable at 170 °C for 24 h as well as stable in weakly alkali environment. Furthermore, the plugging performance of SiO2-g-SPMA in water-based drilling fluids for low permeate reservoir reached to 78.25% when adding a small amount of 0.5 wt% SiO2-g-SPMA, which effectively hindered the water invasion into formation and protected the reservoir.

Cationic Sterically Stabilized Diblock Copolymer Nanoparticles Exhibit Exceptional Tolerance toward Added Salt

For certain commercial applications such as enhanced oil recovery, sterically stabilized colloidal dispersions that exhibit high tolerance toward added salt are desirable. Herein, we report a series of new cationic diblock copolymer nanoparticles that display excellent colloidal stability in concentrated aqueous salt solutions. More specifically, poly(2-(acryloyloxy)ethyltrimethylammonium chloride) (PATAC) has been chain-extended by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer aqueous dispersion polymerization of diacetone acrylamide (DAAM) at 70 °C to produce PATAC₁₀₀-PDAAM_x diblock copolymer spheres at 20% w/w solids via polymerization-induced self-assembly. Transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis confirm that the mean sphere diameter can be adjusted by systematic variation of the mean degree of polymerization of the PDAAM block. Remarkably, DLS studies confirm that highly cationic PATAC₁₀₀-PDAAM₁₅₀₀ spheres retain their colloidal stability in the presence of either 4.0 M KCl or 3.0 M ammonium sulfate for at least 115 days at 20 °C. The mole fraction of PATAC chains within the stabilizer shell was systematically varied by the chain extension of various binary mixtures of non-ionic poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) (PDMAC) and cationic PATAC with DAAM to produce ([n] PATAC₁₀₀ + [1 - n] PDMAC₆₇)-PDAAM_z diblock copolymer spheres at 20% w/w. DLS studies confirmed that a relatively high mole fraction of cationic PATAC stabilizer chains (n ≥ 0.75) is required for the dispersions to remain colloidally stable in 4.0 M KCl. Cationic worms and vesicles could also be synthesized using a binary mixture of PATAC and PDMAC precursors, where n = 0.10. However, the vesicles only remained colloidally stable up to 1.0 M KCl, whereas the worms proved to be stable up to 2.0 M KCl. Such block copolymer nanoparticles are expected to be useful model systems for understanding the behavior of aqueous colloidal dispersions in extremely salty media. Finally, zeta potentials determined using electrophoretic light scattering are presented for such nanoparticles dispersed in highly salty media.

A review of polymer nanohybrids for oil recovery

As oil fields go into their final stage of production, new technologies are necessary to sustain production and increase the recovery of the hydrocarbon. Chemical injection is an enhanced recovery technique, which focuses on increasing the effectiveness of waterfloods. However, the use of chemical flooding has been hampered by its relatively high cost and the adsorption of the injected chemicals onto the reservoir rocks. In recent years, nanofluids have been launched as an overall less expensive and more efficient alternative to other chemical agents. Nanoparticle inclusion is also proposed to mitigate polymer flooding performance limitations under harsh reservoir conditions. This review presents a comprehensive discussion of the most recent developments of polymer nanohybrids for oil recovery. First, the preparation methods of polymer nanohybrids are summarized and explained. Then, an explanation of the different mechanisms leading to improved oil recovery are highlighted. Finally, the current challenges and opportunities for future development and application of polymer nanohybrids for chemical flooding are identified.

Understanding Calcium-Mediated Adhesion of Nanomaterials in Reservoir Fluids by Insights from Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Interest in nanomaterials for subsurface applications has grown markedly due to their successful application in a variety of disciplines, such as biotechnology and medicine. Nevertheless, nanotechnology application in the petroleum industry presents greater challenges to implementation because of the harsh conditions (i.e. high temperature, high pressure, and high salinity) that exist in the subsurface that far exceed those present in biological applications. The most common subsurface nanomaterial failures include colloidal instability (aggregation) and sticking to mineral surfaces (irreversible retention). We previously reported an atomic force microscopy (AFM) study on the calcium-mediated adhesion of nanomaterials in reservoir fluids (S. L. Eichmann and N. A. Burnham, Sci. Rep. 7, 11613, 2017), where we discovered that the functionalized and bare AFM tips showed mitigated adhesion forces in calcium ion rich fluids. Herein, molecular dynamics reveal the molecular-level details in the AFM experiments. Special attention was given to the carboxylate-functionalized AFM tips because of their prominent ion-specific effects. The simulation results unambiguously demonstrated that in calcium ion rich fluids, the strong carboxylate-calcium ion complexes prevented direct carboxylate-calcite interactions, thus lowering the AFM adhesion forces. We performed the force measurement simulations on five representative calcite crystallographic surfaces and observed that the adhesion forces were about two to three fold higher in the calcium ion deficient fluids compared to the calcium ion rich fluids for all calcite surfaces. Moreover, in calcium ion deficient fluids, the adhesion forces were significantly stronger on the calcite surfaces with higher calcium ion exposures. This indicated that the interactions between the functionalized AFM tips and the calcite surfaces were mainly through carboxylate interactions with the calcium ions on calcite surfaces. Finally, when analyzing the order parameters of the tethered functional groups, we observed significantly different behavior of the alkanethiols depending on the absence or presence of calcium ions. These observations agreed well with AFM experiments and provided new insights for the competing carboxylate/calcite/calcium ion interactions.

One-Step Synthesis and Functionalization of High-Salinity-Tolerant Magnetite Nanoparticles with Sulfonated Phenolic Resin

Superparamagnetic nanoparticles are being actively developed for various applications in oil fields. A key requirement for such nanoparticles is the long-term stability of their dispersion under harsh subsurface conditions such as high salinity and high temperature. In this study, through functionalization of the surface of the magnetite nanoparticles with a sulfonated phenolic resin, stable dispersions of the nanoparticles in 5 wt % NaCl solution at neutral to basic pH were achieved. Sulfonated phenolic resin is aromatic in nature and can endure high temperatures; moreover, the strongly anionic sulfonate groups facilitate sufficient electrostatic repulsion between the particles even in a highly saline environment. Sulfonated phenolic resin was synthesized by heating a mixture of 4-hydroxybenzenesulfonic acid and formaldehyde at 1:1 molar ratio. Then, by synthesizing magnetite nanoparticles by a co-precipitation process in a solution of sulfonated phenolic resin, one-pot synthesis/surface functionalization was accomplished, which not only simplifies the manufacturing process but also can potentially lower the cost of production owing to the use of readily available phenolic resins. The reliability of the technique was confirmed by the detailed characterization of the nanoparticle through size distribution analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, ζ-potential measurements, transmission electron microscopy imaging, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy mapping. Further, Langevin curve was generated for evaluating the superparamagnetism of the nanoparticles.

Competitive calcium ion binding to end-tethered weak polyelectrolytes

We have developed a molecular model to describe the structural changes and potential collapse of weak polyelectrolyte layers end-tethered to planar surfaces and spherical nanoparticles as a function of pH and divalent ion concentration. In particular, we describe the structural changes of polymer-coated nanoparticles end-tethered to copolymers of poly(acrylic acid) (pAA) and poly arcrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonate (pAMPS) in the presence of Ca²⁺ ions. We find that end-grafted poly(acrylic acid) layers will collapse in aqueous solutions containing sufficient amounts of Ca²⁺ ions, while polymers and copolymers with sufficient AMPS monomers will not collapse. The collapse of end-tethered pAA is due to the formation of calcium bridges between two acrylic acid monomers and one calcium ion. On the other hand pAMPS layers do not collapse due to the lack of calcium bridges. The collapse of pAA layers is strongly dependent on the pH as well as divalent and monovalent salt concentrations of the environment. The collapse is also strongly influenced by the curvature of the tethering surface.

Aqueous aggregation behavior of citric acid coated magnetite nanoparticles: Effects of pH, cations, anions, and humic acid

Improving the colloidal stability of magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) is essential for their successful applications. In this study, the surface zeta potential and particle size evolutions of citric acid coated magnetite nanoparticles (CA-MNPs) were measured under varied aqueous conditions using dynamic light scattering (DLS). The effects of pH (5.0-9.0), ionic strength (IS), cations (Na⁺ and Ca²⁺), anions (phosphate, sulfate, and chloride) and humic acid on the aggregation behaviors of CA-MNPs were explored. Compared with bare MNPs, the stability of CA-MNPs were greatly improved over the typical pH range of natural aquatic environments (pH = 5.0-9.0), as the coated CA-MNPs were highly negatively charged over the pH range due to the low pK_a1 value (3.13) of citrate acid. CA-MNPs were more stable in the presence of monovalent cation (Na⁺) compared with divalent cation (Ca²⁺), as Ca²⁺ could neutralize the surface charge of MNPs more significantly than Na⁺. In the presence of anions, the surface charges of CA-MNPs became more negative, and the stability of CA-MNPs followed the order: in phosphate > sulfate > chloride. The observed aggregation trend could be explained by the differences in the valences of the anions and their adsorption behaviors onto CA-MNPs, which altered the surface charges of CA-MNPs. The measured critical coagulation concentrations (CCC) values of CA-MNPs in these electrolyte solutions agreed well with Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) calculations. With the addition of Humic acid (HA), the aggregation of CA-MNPs was inhibited in all electrolyte solutions even with the critical coagulation concentrations. This is due to the adsorption of HA onto CA-MNPs, which enhanced the electrostatic and steric repulsive forces between CA-MNPs. Considering the good stability of CA-MNPs in solutions with varied pH and electrolyte compositions, as well as with the easy synthesis of CA-MNPs and their non-toxicity, this study suggested CA coating as a good strategy to increase the stability of MNPs.

Influence of Protamine Functionalization on the Colloidal Stability of 1D and 2D Titanium Oxide Nanostructures

The colloidal stability of titanium oxide nanosheets (TNS) and nanowires (TiONW) was studied in the presence of protamine (natural polyelectrolyte) in aqueous dispersions, where the nanostructures possessed negative net charge, and the protamine was positively charged. Regardless of their shape, similar charging and aggregation behaviors were observed for both TNS and TiONW. Electrophoretic experiments performed at different protamine loadings revealed that the adsorption of protamine led to charge neutralization and charge inversion depending on the polyelectrolyte dose applied. Light scattering measurements indicated unstable dispersions once the surface charge was close to zero or slow aggregation below and above the charge neutralization point with negatively or positively charged nanostructures, respectively. These stability regimes were confirmed by the electron microscopy images taken at different polyelectrolyte loadings. The protamine dose and salt-dependent colloidal stability confirmed the presence of DLVO-type interparticle forces, and no experimental evidence was found for additional interactions (e.g., patch-charge, hydrophobic, or steric forces), which are usually present in similar polyelectrolyte-particle systems. These findings indicate that the polyelectrolyte adsorbs on the TNS and TiONW surfaces in a flat and extended conformation giving rise to the absence of surface heterogeneities. Therefore, protamine is an excellent biocompatible candidate to form smooth surfaces, for instance in multilayers composed of polyelectrolytes and particles to be used in biomedical applications.

Steric stabilization of nanoparticles with grafted low molecular weight ligands in highly concentrated brines including divalent ions

Whereas numerous studies of stabilization of nanoparticles (NPs) in electrolytes have examined biological fluids, the interest has grown recently in media with much higher ionic strengths including seawater and brines relevant to environmental science and subsurface oil and gas reservoirs. Given that electrostatic repulsion is limited at extremely high ionic strengths due to charge screening, we have identified ligands that are well solvated in concentrated brine containing divalent cations and thus provide steric stabilization of silica nanoparticles. Specifically, the hydrodynamic diameter of silica nanoparticles with grafted low molecular weight ligands, a diol ether, [3-(2,3-dihydroxypropoxy)propyl]-trimethoxysilane, and a zwitterionic sulfobetaine, 3-([dimethyl(3-trimethoxysilyl)propyl]ammonio)propane-1-sulfonate, is shown with dynamic light scattering to remain essentially constant, indicating lack of aggregation, at room temperature and up to 80 °C for over 30 days. An extended DLVO model signifies that steric stabilization is strongly dominant against van der Waals attraction for ∼10 nm particles given that these ligands are well solvated even in highly concentrated brine. In contrast, polyethylene glycol oligomers do not provide steric stabilization at elevated temperatures, even at conditions where the ligands are soluble, indicating complicating factors including bridging of the ether oxygens by divalent cations.

Aggregation of layered double hydroxide nanoparticles in the presence of heparin: towards highly stable delivery systems

Heparin coating significantly enhanced the colloidal stability of layered double hydroxide nanoparticles.

Tuning the aggregation of titanate nanowires in aqueous dispersions

Electrophoretic and dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements revealed that aggregation in aqueous dispersion of titanate nanowires (TiONWs) can be tuned by poly(diallyldimethylammonium) chloride (PDADMAC) polyelectrolyte. The nanowires possessed negative charge under alkaline conditions which was compensated by the oppositely charged PDADMAC adsorbed on the surface. Such adsorption led to charge neutralization and subsequent charge reversal at the appropriate polyelectrolyte doses. The dispersions were stable at low PDADMAC concentration where the TiONWs possessed negative charge. However, fast aggregation of the nanowires occurred close to the charge neutralization point where the overall charge of the particles was zero. Charge inversion at high polyelectrolyte doses gave rise to restabilization of the samples and slow aggregation of the TiONWs even at higher ionic strengths where the original bare TiONW dispersions were unstable. The colloid stability of the bare nanowires can be explained well qualitatively by the Derjaguin, Landau, Verwey, and Overbeek (DLVO) theory; however, polyelectrolyte adsorption led to additional patch-charge attractions and osmotic repulsion between the particles. On the basis of the knowledge generated by the present work, experimental conditions (e.g., salt level, polyelectrolyte, and particle concentrations) can be adjusted in order to design stable and processable aqueous dispersions of TiONWs for further applications.

Iron Oxide Nanoparticles Grafted with Sulfonated and Zwitterionic Polymers: High Stability and Low Adsorption in Extreme Aqueous Environments

A facile "grafting through" approach was developed to tether tunable quantities of poly(2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid) (PAMPS) as well as zwitterionic poly([3-(methacryloylamino)propyl]dimethyl(3-sulfopropyl)ammonium hydroxide) (PMPDSA) homopolymer onto iron oxide (IO) nanoparticles (NPs). In this case, homopolymers may be grafted, unlike "grafting to" approaches that often require copolymers containing anchor groups. The polymer coating provided steric stabilization of the NP dispersions at high salinities and elevated temperature (90 °C) and almost completely prevented adsorption of the NPs on silica microparticles and crushed Berea sandstone. The adsorption of PAMPS IO NPs decreased with the polymer loading, whereby the magnitude of the particle-surface electrosteric repulsion increased. The zwitterionic PMPDSA IO NPs displayed 1 order of magnitude less adsorption onto crushed Berea sandstone relative to the anionic PAMPS IO NPs. The ability to design homopolymer coatings on nanoparticle surfaces by the "grafting through" technique is of broad interest for designing stable dispersions and modulating the interactions between nanoparticles and solid surfaces.

High interfacial activity of polymers "grafted through" functionalized iron oxide nanoparticle clusters

The mechanism by which polymers, when grafted to inorganic nanoparticles, lower the interfacial tension at the oil-water interface is not well understood, despite the great interest in particle stabilized emulsions and foams. A simple and highly versatile free radical "grafting through" technique was used to bond high organic fractions (by weight) of poly(oligo(ethylene oxide) monomethyl ether methacrylate) onto iron oxide clusters, without the need for catalysts. In the resulting ∼1 μm hybrid particles, the inorganic cores and grafting architecture contribute to the high local concentration of grafted polymer chains to the dodecane/water interface to produce low interfacial tensions of only 0.003 w/v % (polymer and particle core). This "critical particle concentration" (CPC) for these hybrid inorganic/polymer amphiphilic particles to lower the interfacial tension by 36 mN/m was over 30-fold lower than the critical micelle concentration of the free polymer (without inorganic cores) to produce nearly the same interfacial tension. The low CPC is favored by the high adsorption energy (∼10(6) kBT) for the large ∼1 μm hybrid particles, the high local polymer concentration on the particles surfaces, and the ability of the deformable hybrid nanocluster cores as well as the polymer chains to conform to the interface. The nanocluster cores also increased the entanglement of the polymer chains in bulk DI water or synthetic seawater, producing a viscosity up to 35,000 cP at 0.01 s(-1), in contrast with only 600 cP for the free polymer. As a consequence of these interfacial and rheological properties, the hybrid particles stabilized oil-in-water emulsions at concentrations as low as 0.01 w/v %, with average drop sizes down to 30 μm. In contrast, the bulk viscosity was low for the free polymer, and it did not stabilize the emulsions. The ability to influence the interfacial activity and rheology of polymers upon grafting them to inorganic particles, including clusters, may be expected to be broadly applicable to stabilization of emulsions and foams.

Adsorption of acid and polymer coated nanoparticles: a statistical thermodynamics approach

A molecular theoretical description is developed to describe the adsorption of nanoparticles (NPs) that are coated with polymers and functionalized with (surface) acid groups. Results are presented for the adsorption onto both negatively and positively charged surfaces as a function of pH and salt concentration, polymer coating, and NP size. An important finding is that nanoparticles that are coated with weak charge regulating acid molecules such as citric acid develop an asymmetric charge distribution close to a charged surface, due to their finite size. Depending on the sign of the surface charge of the adsorbing surface, a nanoparticle close to the surface either gains more charge or loses charge compared to its "bulk" degree of charge. This in turn influences the amount of NPs that adsorb. The effect of adsorption of negatively charged NPs onto a positively charged surface shows a nonmonotonical variation with pH. The described charging mechanism reveals that details such as size of the NP and acid distribution on the NP need to be considered to provide an accurate understanding of the adsorption process.
