Energies of the adsorption of functional groups to calcium carbonate polymorphs: the importance of -OH and -COOH groups

Natural solution for the remediation of multi-metal contamination: application of natural amino acids, Pseudomonas fluorescens and Micrococcus yunnanensis to increase the phytoremediation efficiency

Natural amino acids (NAA) have been rarely investigated as chelators, despite their ability to chelate heavy metals (HMs). In the present research, the effects of extracted natural amino acids, as a natural and environmentally friendly chelate agent and the inoculation of Pseudomonas fluorescens (PF) and Micrococcus yunnanensis (MY) bacteria were investigated on some responses of quinoa in a soil polluted with Pb, Ni, Cd, and Zn. Inoculation of PGPR bacteria enhanced plant growth and phytoremediation efficiency. Pb and Cd were higher in quinoa roots, while Ni and Zn were higher in the shoots. The highest efficiencies were observed with NAA treatment and simultaneous inoculation of PF and MY bacteria for Ni, Cd, Pb, and Zn. The highest values of phytoremediation efficiency and uptake efficiency of Ni, Cd, Pb, and Zn were 21.28, 19.11, 14.96 and 18.99 μg g-1, and 31.52, 60.78, 51.89, and 25.33 μg g-1, respectively. Results of present study well demonstrated NAA extracted from blood powder acted as strong chelate agent due to their diversity in size, solubilizing ability, abundant functional groups, and potential in the formation of stable complexes with Ni, Cd, Pb, and Zn, increasing metal availability in soil and improving phytoremediation efficiency in quinoa.

The dynamic nature of natural and fatty acid modified calcite surfaces

Calcium carbonate, particularly in the form of calcite, is an abundant mineral widely used in both human-made products and biological systems. The calcite surface possesses a high surface energy, making it susceptible to the adsorption of organic contaminants. Moreover, the surface is also reactive towards a range of chemicals, including water. Consequently, studying and maintaining a clean and stable calcite surface is only possible under ultrahigh vacuum conditions and for limited amounts of time. When exposed to air or solution, the calcite surface undergoes rapid transformations, demanding a comprehensive understanding of the properties of calcite surfaces in different environments. Similarly, attention must also be directed towards the kinetics of changes, whether induced by fluctuating environments or at constant condition. All these aspects are encompassed in the expression "dynamic nature", and are of crucial importance in the context of the diverse applications of calcite. In many instances, the calcite surface is modified by adsorption of fatty acids to impart a desired nonpolar character. Although the binding between carboxylic acid groups and calcite surfaces is strong, the fatty acid layer used for surface modification undergoes significant alterations when exposed to water vapour and liquid water droplets. Therefore, it is also crucial to understand the dynamic nature of the adsorbed layer. This review article provides a comprehensive overview of the current understanding of both the dynamics of the calcite surface as well as when modified by fatty acid surface treatments.

Manufacture of potassium chloride from cement kiln bypass dust: An industrial implementation case for transforming waste into valuable resources

The recirculation of chlorine within the kiln presents a major hurdle in co-processing domestic waste in cement kilns. This chlorine enrichment not only adversely affects the quality of cement, but also pose a serious challenge to the subsequent eco-friendly disposal of kiln dust. To solve this problem, a proper bypass system has been implemented in this study on a 4000 t/d new dry process cement rotary kiln, and the collection of chlorine-rich bypass dust outside the kiln (30 t/d) has been achieved. In addition, a comprehensive and innovative system has been developed, including water washing and subsequent triple-effect salt extraction, to achieve leaching of K+ and Cl from the bypass dust in the water rinsing liquid, while effectively removing harmful metal ions such as Pb2+. Finally, the extraction of high-purity KCl salt (6 tons/day, purity of 90 %) has been successfully achieved. It is worth noting that high-temperature flue gas rich in CO2 has been used to precipitate certain heavy metal ions, while steam from the waste-heat power generation system has been employed as a heat source for the potassium salt evaporation process. More importantly, all the materials, except for the KCl salt product, are returned to the cement kiln system without causing any secondary pollution. This study not only effectively addresses the negative impacts of chlorine element circulation within cement kilns during domestic waste co-processing, but also achieves a highly innovative engineering practice of transforming waste into valuable resources from kiln dust to high-purity KCl products. In brief, this work provides a reference example for future approaches to clean production, carbon reduction and resource utilization in the cement industry.

Assembly of the Intraskeletal Coral Organic Matrix during Calcium Carbonate Formation

Scleractinia coral skeleton formation occurs by a heterogeneous process of nucleation and growth of aragonite in which intraskeletal soluble organic matrix molecules, usually referred to as SOM, play a key role. Several studies have demonstrated that they influence the shape and polymorphic precipitation of calcium carbonate. However, the structural aspects that occur during the growth of aragonite have received less attention. In this research, we study the deposition of calcium carbonate on a model substrate, silicon, in the presence of SOM extracted from the skeleton of two coral species representative of different living habitats and colonization strategies, which we previously characterized. The study is performed mainly by grazing incidence X-ray diffraction with the support of Raman spectroscopy and electron and optical microscopies. The results show that SOM macromolecules once adsorbed on the substrate self-assembled in a layered structure and induced the oriented growth of calcite, inhibiting the formation of vaterite. Differently, when SOM macromolecules were dispersed in solution, they induced the deposition of amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC), still preserving a layered structure. The entity of these effects was species-dependent, in agreement with previous studies. In conclusion, we observed that in the setup required by the experimental procedure, the SOM from corals appears to present a 2D lamellar structure. This structure is preserved when the SOM interacts with ACC but is lost when the interaction occurs with calcite. This knowledge not only is completely new for coral biomineralization but also has strong relevance in the study of biomineralization on other organisms.

Inorganic Scaling in Membrane Desalination: Models, Mechanisms, and Characterization Methods

Inorganic scaling caused by precipitation of sparingly soluble salts at supersaturation is a common but critical issue, limiting the efficiency of membrane-based desalination and brine management technologies as well as other engineered systems. A wide range of minerals including calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate, and silica precipitate during membrane-based desalination, limiting water recovery and reducing process efficiency. The economic impact of scaling on desalination processes requires understanding of its sources, causes, effects, and control methods. In this Critical Review, we first describe nucleation mechanisms and crystal growth theories, which are fundamental to understanding inorganic scale formation during membrane desalination. We, then, discuss the key mechanisms and factors that govern membrane scaling, including membrane properties, such as surface roughness, charge, and functionality, as well as feedwater characteristics, such as pH, temperature, and ionic strength. We follow with a critical review of current characterization techniques for both homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation, focusing on the strengths and limitations of each technique to elucidate scale-inducing mechanisms, observe actual crystal growth, and analyze the outcome of scaling behaviors of desalination membranes. We conclude with an outlook on research needs and future research directions to provide guidelines for scale mitigation in water treatment and desalination.

Impact of Adsorption of Straight Chain Alcohol Molecules on the Optical Properties of Calcite (10.4) Surface

Calcium carbonate plays a central role in controlling the chemistry of the oceans, biomineralization and oil production, to name a few. In this work, using density functional theory with semiempirical dispersion corrections and simplified TD-DFT using Tamm-Dancoff approximation, we investigated the impact of the adsorption of straight chain alcohol (ethanol and pentanol) molecules on the optical properties of a calcite (10.4) surface. Our results show that ethanol and/or pentanol molecules form a well-ordered monolayer (through their hydroxyl group with carbon chains sticking away in a standing-up position) on the calcite (10.4) surface. Additionally, we found intriguing modulations in the photoabsorption spectra and circular dichroism spectra. In particular, the latter was a unique optical fingerprint for a molecule-adsorbed calcite (10.4) surface. Our findings provide useful insights into the structural and optical features of calcite-based systems at the atomic level.

Density Functional Theory (DFT) as a Nondestructive Probe in the Field of Art Conservation: Small-Molecule Adsorption on Aragonite Surfaces

Humans have incorporated minerals in objects of cultural heritage importance for millennia. The surfaces of these objects, which often long outlast the humans that create them, are undeniably exposed to a diverse mixture of chemicals throughout their lifetimes. As of yet, the art conservation community lacks a nondestructive, accurate, and inexpensive flexible computational screening method to evaluate the potential impact of chemicals with art, as a complement to experimental studies. In this work, we propose periodic density functional theory (DFT) studies as a way to address this challenge, specifically for the aragonite phase of calcium carbonate, a mineral that has been used in pigments, marble statues, and limestone architecture since ancient times. Computational models allow art conservation scientists to better understand the atomistic impact of small-molecule adsorbates on common mineral surfaces across a wide variety of environmental conditions. To gain insight into the surface adsorption reactivity of aragonite, we use DFT to investigate the atomistic interactions present in small-molecule-surface interfaces. Our adsorbate set includes common solvents, atmospheric pollutants, and emerging contaminants. Chemicals that significantly disrupt the surface structure such as carboxylic acids and sulfur-containing molecules are highlighted. We also focus on comparing adsorption energies and changes in surface bonds, which allows for the identification of key features in the electronic structure presented in a projected-density-of-state analysis. The trends outlined here will guide future experiments and allow art conservators to gain a better understanding of how a wide range of molecules interact with an aragonite surface under variable conditions and in different environments.

In Situ Chemical Locking of Acetates During Xylo-Oligosaccharide Preparation by Lignocellulose Acidolysis

Xylo-oligosaccharides with high value could be obtained by acidolysis of lignocellulosic biomass with acetic acid, which was an urgent problem to solve for the separation of acetic acid from crude xylo-oligosaccharides solution. Four neutralizers, CaCO₃, CaO, Na₂CO₃, and NaOH, were used for in situ chemically locking the acetic acid in the acidolyzed hydrolysate of corncob. The chemically locked hydrolysate was analyzed and compared using vacuum evaporation and spray drying. After CaCO₃, CaO, Na₂CO₃, and NaOH treatment, the locking rates of acetic acid were 92.62%, 94.89%, 95.05%, and 95.58%, respectively, and 39.55 g, 41.13 g, 41.78 g, and 41.87 g of the compound of xylo-oligosaccharide and acetate were obtained. Sodium neutralizer had lesser effect on xylo-oligosaccharide content, and Na₂CO₃ was the best chemical for locking acetic acid among these four neutralizers. This process provides a novel method for effectively utilizing acetic acid during the industrial production of xylo-oligosaccharides via acetic acid.

Exchange Reactions at Mineral Interfaces

Exchange reactions are a family of chemical reactions that appear when mineral surfaces come into contact with protic solvents. Exchange reactions can also be understood as a unique interaction at mineral interfaces. Particularly significant interactions occurring at mineral surfaces are those with water and CO₂. The rather complex process occurring when minerals such as calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) phases come into contact with aqueous environments is referred to as a metal-proton exchange reaction (MPER). This process leads to the leaching of calcium ions from the near-surface region, the first step in the corrosion of cement-bound materials. Among the various corrosion reactions of C-S-H phases, the MPER appears to be the most important one. A promising approach to bridging certain problems caused by MPER and carbonation is the passivation of C-S-H surfaces. Today, such passivation is reached, for instance, by the functionalization of C-S-H surfaces with water-repelling organic films. Unfortunately, these organic films are weak against temperature and especially weak against abrasion. Exchange reactions at mineral interfaces allow the preparation of intrinsic, hydrophobic surfaces of C-S-H phases just at room temperature via a metal-metal exchange reaction.

Comparison of CH4 and CO2 Adsorptions onto Calcite(10.4), Aragonite(011)Ca, and Vaterite(010)CO3 Surfaces: An MD and DFT Investigation

The interaction between greenhouse gases (such as CH₄ and CO₂) and carbonate rocks has a significant impact on carbon transfer among different geochemical reservoirs. Moreover, CH₄ and CO₂ gases usually associate with oil and natural gas reserves, and their adsorption onto sedimentary rocks may influence the exploitation of fossil fuels. By employing the molecular dynamics (MD) and density functional theory (DFT) methods, the adsorptions of CH₄ and CO₂ onto three different CaCO₃ polymorphs (i.e., calcite(10.4), aragonite(011)Ca, and vaterite(010)CO₃) are compared in the present work. The calculated adsorption energies (E _ad) are always negative for the three substrates, which indicates that their adsorptions are exothermic processes and spontaneous in thermodynamics. The E _ad of CO₂ is much more negative, which suggests that the CO₂ adsorption will form stronger interfacial binding compared with the CH₄ adsorption. The adsorption precedence of CH₄ on the three surfaces is aragonite(011)Ca > vaterite(010)CO₃ > calcite(10.4), while for CO₂, the sequence is vaterite(010)CO₃ > aragonite(011)Ca > calcite(10.4). Combining with the interfacial atomic configuration analysis, the Mulliken atomic charge distribution and overlap bond population are discussed. The results demonstrate that the adsorption of CH₄ is physisorption and that its interfacial interaction mainly comes from the electrostatic effects between H in CH₄ and O in CO₃ ^2-, while the CO₂ adsorption is chemisorption and the interfacial binding effect is mainly contributed by the bonds between O in CO₂ and Ca²⁺ and the electrostatic interaction between C in CO₂ and O in CO₃ ^2-.

Natural amino acids as potential chelators for soil remediation

The soils contaminated by toxic metals are often remediated using EDTA and similar non-biodegradable chelators. Most chelators are in fact synthetic amino acid derivatives, whereas natural proteinogenic amino acids (PAAs) have not been systematically explored as remediation agents, despite their well-known metal chelating abilities and environmental benefits. Our study represents a comprehensive research exploring 16 structurally and functionally different PAAs as potential remediating agents, applied to 3 different heavy metal-contaminated samples. The study was mostly focused on extracting Cd, Cu, Ni, and Zn. The reaction parameters were screened and optimized. It was found that the efficiencies of extracting Cu, Ni, and Zn by Threonine, Aspartic acid and Histidine were comparable to those by EDTA, whereas non-polar side chain-containing PAAs demonstrated consistently lower PTM extraction rates compared to other PAAs. The sulfur-containing Cysteine appeared to be efficient to extract Cd (to some extent), Ni and Zn, but not Cu, due to chemical reasons. The structure-functional correlations were identified, described, and found to be independent on the specific samples. Possible molecular mechanisms of metal extraction from soils by PAAs are discussed. In contrast to EDTA, the soil-essential elements are almost not extracted by PAAs. This important feature of the PAAs, along with their availability, observed selectivity, competitive efficiency, non-toxicity and even fertilizing properties, make them particularly soil-friendly, and thus, potentially applicable chelators in certain remediation processes.

The Interaction of Biofoulants and Calcareous Deposits on Corrosion Performance of Q235 in Seawater

An understanding of the interaction of calcareous deposits and biofoulants on the corrosion performance of steel during the fouling stage is both interesting and necessary. So, the effects of these factors on Q235 carbon steel were investigated and discussed for 20 weeks under real ocean conditions. The results indicate that calcareous deposits are favorable for the attachment of marine microorganisms. However, macroorganisms prefer adhering directly to the substrate. The generations of calcareous deposits have priority over the biofilm attachment under the condition of cathodic protection. Calcareous deposits can prevent steel against corrosion for four weeks without cathodic protection.

The Impact of Salinity on the Interfacial Structuring of an Aromatic Acid at the Calcite/Brine Interface: An Atomistic View on Low Salinity Effect

This study aims to elucidate the impact of salinity on the interactions governing the adsorption of polar aromatic oil compounds onto calcite. To this end, molecular dynamics simulations were employed to assess adsorption of a model polar organic molecule (deprotonated benzoic acid, benzoate) on the calcite surface in NaCl brines of different concentration levels, namely, deionized water (DW), low-salinity water (LS, 5000 ppm), and sea water (SW; 45,000 ppm). Calcite was found to be completely covered by several well-ordered water layers. The top hydration layer is very compact and prevents direct adsorption of benzoates onto the substrate. Instead, Na⁺ ions form a distinct positively charged layer by adhering on the calcite substrate through inner-sphere complexion mode. Cl^- ions mostly lodge on top of the adsorbed sodium cations, forming a negatively charged layer. The distribution of ions at the calcite/brine interface thus exhibits the features of an electrical double layer, composed of a Stern-like positive layer followed by a negative one. The positive charged layer attracts benzoates toward the surface. As such, the sodium ions attached onto the calcite can act as adsorption sites to connect benzoates to the surface. By increasing the salinity, more Na⁺ ions adsorb onto the calcite surface, and the density of benzoate molecules at the interface is enhanced as a result of more Na⁺ bridging ions. The monotonic salinity-dependent adsorption of benzoate molecules on calcite offers a mechanism driving additional oil recovery upon injection of diluted brine into subsurface carbonate reservoirs.

Hydroxyl-rich macromolecules enable the bio-inspired synthesis of single crystal nanocomposites

Acidic macromolecules are traditionally considered key to calcium carbonate biomineralisation and have long been first choice in the bio-inspired synthesis of crystalline materials. Here, we challenge this view and demonstrate that low-charge macromolecules can vastly outperform their acidic counterparts in the synthesis of nanocomposites. Using gold nanoparticles functionalised with low charge, hydroxyl-rich proteins and homopolymers as growth additives, we show that extremely high concentrations of nanoparticles can be incorporated within calcite single crystals, while maintaining the continuity of the lattice and the original rhombohedral morphologies of the crystals. The nanoparticles are perfectly dispersed within the host crystal and at high concentrations are so closely apposed that they exhibit plasmon coupling and induce an unexpected contraction of the crystal lattice. The versatility of this strategy is then demonstrated by extension to alternative host crystals. This simple and scalable occlusion approach opens the door to a novel class of single crystal nanocomposites.

Characterization of Organic Layer in Oil Carbonate Reservoir Rocks and its Effect on Microscale Wetting Properties

Effective production of oil from carbonate reservoirs often requires the application of improved oil recovery technologies such as waterflooding. However, conventional waterflooding in carbonates usually results in low hydrocarbon recovery as most of these formations exhibit a complex pore throats structure and are mostly oil-wet. Therefore, improved insight into the causes of hydrophobic wetting behavior of such reservoirs is important for understanding the fluid distribution, displacement and enhancing recovery processes. The characterization of fluid-rock interactions is, however, challenging with existing laboratory methods, which are typically based on macroscale (mm) observations. In this experimental study, an advanced imaging technique, namely environmental scanning electron microscope, was applied for the comprehensive investigation of microscale (µm) wettability variations in carbonate rocks covered with organic layers. For the first time, the presence of organic layers on the sample was proved using energy dispersive X-ray mapping. Furthermore, the chemical bond of this layer and carbonate rock surfaces was determined using the transmission electron microscopy and electron energy-loss spectroscopy. The thickness of layer was estimated by using image processing software. These findings show that the application of combined microscopic techniques reveals important details about the reason of hydrophobic wetting properties of real carbonate rocks.

High-affinity carboxyl-graphene oxide-based SPR aptasensor for the detection of hCG protein in clinical serum samples

BACKGROUND

The use of functionalized graphene oxide (fGO) has led to a new trend in the sensor field, owing to its high sensitivity with regards to sensing characteristics and easy synthesis procedures.

METHODS

In this study, we developed an ultra-sensitive carboxyl-graphene oxide (carboxyl-GO)-based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) aptasensor using peptides to detect human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in clinical serum samples. The carboxyl-GO based SPR aptasensor provided high affinity and stronger binding of peptides, which are great importance to allow for a non-immunological label-free mechanism. Also, it allows the detection of low concentrations of hCG, which are in turn considered to be important clinical parameters to diagnose ectopic pregnancies and paraneoplastic syndromes.

RESULTS

The high selectivity of the carboxyl-GO-based SPR aptasensor for hCG recombinant protein was verified by the addition of the interfering proteins bovine serum albumin (BSA) and human serum albumin (HSA), which did not affect the sensitivity of the sensor. The carboxyl-GO-based chip can enhance the assay efficacy of interactions between peptides and had a high affinity binding for a ka of 17×106 M-1S-1. The limit of detection for hCG in clinical serum samples was 1.15 pg/mL.

CONCLUSION

The results of this study demonstrated that the carboxyl-GO-based SPR aptasensor had excellent sensitivity, affinity and selectivity, and thus the potential to be used as disease-related biomarker assay to allow for an early diagnosis, and possibly a new area in the field of biochemical sensing technology.

Adsorption of organic molecules on mineral surfaces studied by first-principle calculations: A review

First-principle calculations, especially by the density functional theory (DFT) methods, are becoming a power technique to study molecular structure and properties of organic/inorganic interfaces. This review introduces some recent examples on the study of adsorption models of organic molecules or oligomers on mineral surfaces and interfacial properties obtained from first-principles calculations. The aim of this contribution is to inspire scientists to benefit from first-principle calculations and to apply the similar strategies when studying and tailoring interfacial properties at the atomistic scale, especially for those interested in the design and development of new molecules and new products.

Hydroxyapatite and Other Calcium Phosphates for the Conservation of Cultural Heritage: A Review

The present paper reviews the methods and the performance of in situ formation of calcium phosphates (CaP) for the conservation of materials belonging to cultural heritage. The core idea is to form CaP (ideally hydroxyapatite, HAP, the most stable CaP at pH > 4) by reaction between the substrate and an aqueous solution of a phosphate salt. Initially proposed for the conservation of marble and limestone, the treatment has been explored for a variety of different substrates, including sandstones, sulphated stones, gypsum stuccoes, concrete, wall paintings, archaeological bones and paper. First, the studies aimed at identifying the best treatment conditions (e.g., nature and concentration of the phosphate precursor, solution pH, treatment duration, ionic and organic additions to the phosphate solution, mineralogical composition of the new CaP phases) are summarized. Then, the treatment performance on marble and limestone is reviewed, in terms of protective and consolidating effectiveness, compatibility (aesthetic, microstructural and physical) and durability. Some pilot applications in real case studies are also reported. Recent research aimed at extending the phosphate treatment to other substrates is then illustrated. Finally, the strengths of the phosphate treatment are summarized, in comparison with alternative products, and some aspects needing future research are outlined.

Calcium-Mediated Adhesion of Nanomaterials in Reservoir Fluids

Globally, a small percentage of oil is recovered from reservoirs using primary and secondary recovery mechanisms, and thus a major focus of the oil industry is toward developing new technologies to increase recovery. Many new technologies utilize surfactants, macromolecules, and even nanoparticles, which are difficult to deploy in harsh reservoir conditions and where failures cause material aggregation and sticking to rock surfaces. To combat these issues, typically material properties are adjusted, but recent studies show that adjusting the dispersing fluid chemistry could have significant impact on material survivability. Herein, the effect of injection fluid salinity and composition on nanomaterial fate is explored using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results show that the calcium content in reservoir fluids affects the interactions of an AFM tip with a calcite surface, as surrogates for nanomaterials interacting with carbonate reservoir rock. The extreme force sensitivity of AFM provides the ability to elucidate small differences in adhesion at the pico-Newton (pN) level and provides direct information about material survivability. Increasing the calcium content mitigates adhesion at the pN-scale, a possible means to increase nanomaterial survivability in oil reservoirs or to control nanomaterial fate in other aqueous environments.

Interactions of the Calcite {10.4} Surface with Organic Compounds: Structure and Behaviour at Mineral - Organic Interfaces

The structure and the strength of organic compound adsorption on mineral surfaces are of interest for a number of industrial and environmental applications, oil recovery, CO₂ storage and contamination remediation. Biomineralised calcite plays an essential role in the function of many organisms that control crystal growth with organic macromolecules. Carbonate rocks, composed almost exclusively of calcite, host drinking water aquifers and oil reservoirs. In this study, we examined the ordering behaviour of several organic compounds and the thickness of the adsorbed layers formed on calcite {10.4} surfaces. We used X-ray reflectivity (XRR) to study calcite {10.4} surfaces that were prepared in three alcohols: methanol, isopropanol and pentanol and one carboxylic acid: octanoic acid. All molecules adsorbed in self-assembled layers, where thickness depended on the density and the length of the molecule. For methanol and isopropanol, molecular dynamic simulations (MD) provided complementary information, which allowed us to develop a surface model. Branching in isopropanol induced slightly less ordering because of the additional degree of freedom. Pentanol and octanoic acid adsorbed as single monolayers. The results of this work indicate that adhered organic compounds from the surrounding environment can affect the surface behaviour, depending on properties of the organic compound.

Modelling how incorporation of divalent cations affects calcite wettability-implications for biomineralisation and oil recovery

Using density functional theory and geochemical speciation modelling, we predicted how solid-fluid interfacial energy is changed, when divalent cations substitute into a calcite surface. The effect on wettability can be dramatic. Trace metal uptake can impact organic compound adsorption, with effects for example, on the ability of organisms to control crystal growth and our ability to predict the wettability of pore surfaces. Wettability influences how easily an organic phase can be removed from a surface, either organic compounds from contaminated soil or crude oil from a reservoir. In our simulations, transition metals substituted exothermically into calcite and more favourably into sites at the surface than in the bulk, meaning that surface properties are more strongly affected than results from bulk experiments imply. As a result of divalent cation substitution, calcite-fluid interfacial energy is significantly altered, enough to change macroscopic contact angle by tens of degrees. Substitution of Sr, Ba and Pb makes surfaces more hydrophobic. With substitution of Mg and the transition metals, calcite becomes more hydrophilic, weakening organic compound adsorption. For biomineralisation, this provides a switch for turning on and off the activity of organic crystal growth inhibitors, thereby controlling the shape of the associated mineral phase.

Carboxyl-functionalized graphene oxide composites as SPR biosensors with enhanced sensitivity for immunoaffinity detection

This work demonstrates the excellent potential of carboxyl-functionalized graphene oxide (GO-COOH) composites to form biocompatible surfaces on sensing films for use in surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-based immunoaffinity biosensors. Carboxyl-functionalization of graphene carbon can modulate its visible spectrum, and can therefore be used to improve and control the plasmonic coupling mechanism. The binding properties of the molecules between a sensing film and a protein were elucidated at various flow rates of those molecules. The bio-specific binding interaction among the molecules was investigated by performing an antigen and antibody affinity immunoassay. The results thus obtained revealed that the overall affinity binding value, K_A, of the Au/GO-COOH chip can be significantly enhanced by up to ∼5.15 times that of the Au/GO chip. With respect to the shifts of the SPR angles of the chips, the affinity immunoassay interaction at a BSA concentration of 1μg/ml for an Au/GO-COOH chip, an Au/GO chip and a traditional SPR chip are 35.5m°, 9.128m° and 8.816m°, respectively. The enhancement of the antigen-antibody interaction of the Au/GO-COOH chip cause this chip to become four times as sensitive to the SPR angle shift and to have the lowest antibody detection limit of 0.01pg/ml. These results indicate the potential of the chip in detecting specific proteins, and the development of real-time in vivo blood analysis and diagnosis based on cancer tumor markers.

Density functional theory with modified dispersion correction for metals applied to molecular adsorption on Pt(111)

We have performed density functional theory calculations using our modified DFT-D2 dispersion correction for metals to investigate adsorption of a range of molecules on Pt(111).

Adsorption Properties of Triethylene Glycol on a Hydrated {101̅4} Calcite Surface and Its Effect on Adsorbed Water

Molecular dynamics (MD) and Born-Oppenheimer MD (BOMD) simulations were employed to investigate adsorption of aqueous triethylene glycol (TEG) on a hydrated {101̅4} calcite surface at 298 K. We analyzed the orientation of TEG adsorbed on calcite, as well as the impact of TEG on the water density and adsorption free energy. The adsorption energies of TEG, free energy profiles for TEG, details of hydrogen bonding between water and adsorbed TEG, and dihedral angle distribution of adsorbed TEG were estimated. We found that while the first layer of water was mostly unaffected by the presence of adsorbed TEG, the density of the second water layer was decreased by 71% at 75% surface coverage of TEG. TEG primarily attached to the calcite surface via two adjacent adsorption sites. Hydrogen bonds between water and adsorbed TEG in the second layer almost exclusively involved the hydroxyl oxygen of TEG. The adsorption energy of TEG on calcite in a vacuum environment calculated by classical MD amounted to 217 kJ/mol, which agreed very well with estimates found by using BOMD. Adsorption on hydrated calcite yielded a drastically lower value of 33 kJ/mol, with the corresponding adsorption free energy of 55.3 kJ/mol, giving an entropy increase of 22.3 kJ/mol due to adsorption. We found that the presence of TEG resulted in a decreased magnitude of the adsorption free energy of water, thus decreasing the calcite wettability. This effect can have a profound effect on oil and gas reservoir properties and must be carefully considered when evaluating the risk of hydrate nucleation.

Probing the energetics of organic-nanoparticle interactions of ethanol on calcite

Knowing the nature of interactions between small organic molecules and surfaces of nanoparticles (NP) is crucial for fundamental understanding of natural phenomena and engineering processes. Herein, we report direct adsorption enthalpy measurement of ethanol on a series of calcite nanocrystals, with the aim of mimicking organic-NP interactions in various environments. The energetics suggests a spectrum of adsorption events as a function of coverage: strongest initial chemisorption on active sites on fresh calcite surfaces, followed by major chemical binding to form an ethanol monolayer and, subsequently, very weak, near-zero energy, physisorption. These thermochemical observations directly support a structure where the ethanol monolayer is bonded to the calcite surface through its polar hydroxyl group, leaving the hydrophobic ends of the ethanol molecules to interact only weakly with the next layer of adsorbing ethanol and resulting in a spatial gap with low ethanol density between the monolayer and subsequent added ethanol molecules, as predicted by molecular dynamics and density functional calculations. Such an ordered assembly of ethanol on calcite NP is analogous to, although less strongly bonded than, a capping layer of organics intentionally introduced during NP synthesis, and suggests a continuous variation of surface structure depending on molecular chemistry, ranging from largely disordered surface layers to ordered layers that nevertheless are mobile and can rearrange or be displaced by other molecules to strongly bonded immobile organic capping layers. These differences in surface structure will affect chemical reactions, including the further nucleation and growth of nanocrystals on organic ligand-capped surfaces.

Ab initio and metadynamics studies on the role of essential functional groups in biomineralization of calcium carbonate and environmental situations

The interactions of proteins, polysaccharides and other biomolecules with Ca(2+), CO3(2-), and water are central to the understanding of biomineralization and crystallization of calcium carbonate (CaCO3), and their association with the natural organic matter (NOM) in the environment. A molecular-level investigation of how such interactions and thermodynamic forces drive the nucleation and growth of crystalline CaCO3 in living organisms remains elusive. This paper presents ab initio and metadynamics studies of the interactions of Ca(2+), CO3(2-), and water with the essential amino acids/functional groups, e.g. arginine/NH2(+), aspartate or glutamate/COO(-), aspartic or glutamic acid/COOH, and serine/OH, of protein/organic molecules that are likely to be critical to the biomineralization of CaCO3. These functional groups were modeled as guanidinium (Gdm(+)), acetate (AcO(-)), acetic acid (AcOH), and ethanol (EtOH) molecules, respectively. The Gdm(+)-Ca(2+)-CO3(2-) and AcO(-)-Ca(2+)-CO3(2-) systems were found to form stable ion-complexes irrespective of the presence of near neighbor water molecules. The strong electrostatic interactions of these functional groups with their counter-ions significantly affect the fundamental vibrational frequencies of the functional groups, mainly the NH2 stretching (str.) and degenerate (deg.) scissors modes of Gdm(+) and -C=OO, CC, and CO str. modes of AcO(-). The free-energy calculations reveal that EtOH forms weakly bound molecular complexes with the Ca(2+)-CO3(2-) ion pairs in water. However, the interaction strength of EtOH with crystalline CaCO3 can increase significantly due to combined effect of H-bond and electron donor acceptor (EDA) type of interactions. These results indicate that -NH2(+) and -COO(-) bearing molecules serve as potential nucleation sites promoting crystallization of CaCO3 phases while -OH bearing molecules are likely to control the morphology of the crystalline phases by attaching to the growing crystal surfaces.

Adhesion of alkane as a functional group on muscovite and quartz: dependence on pH and contact time

The interactions between mineral surfaces and organic molecules in water control many processes in nature and in the production of modern materials. To improve the understanding of fluid-surface interactions, we investigated the interface behavior of quartz and muscovite, a model for clay minerals, in aqueous solutions where the pH and composition were controlled. We used atomic force microscopy (AFM) in chemical force mapping (CFM) mode to measure adhesion using tips functionalized with alkyl, -CH3. By combining adhesion forces measured as a function of pH, with data from streaming potential experiments and DLVO calculations, we were able to determine the surface charge density. We observed increased adhesion between the mineral surface and the hydrophobic tips as the contact time increased from 7 ms to ∼2 s. The diffusion of dissolved ions takes time, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations did not indicate a strong hydration of the mineral surfaces. Therefore, we interpret that the loss of ions from the confined space between the tip and sample is a likely explanation of the correlation between the dwell time and adhesion. The maximum adhesion increase with dwell time for muscovite, i.e., 400 ± 77 pN, was considerably larger than for quartz, 84 ± 15 pN, which fits with the different surface structure and composition of the two minerals. We propose two mechanisms to explain these results: (1) cations that are structured in the solution and on the surface remain associated at the tip-sample interface initially but diffuse away during extended contact time and (2) adventitious carbon, the organic material that comes spontaneously from air and solution, can diffuse to the tip-sample interface during contact. This material decreases the surface energy by aggregating near the alkyl tip and increases adhesion between the tip and sample.
