Differential adsorption of gold nanoparticles to gold/palladium and platinum surfaces

Field-Effect Capacitors Decorated with Ligand-Stabilized Gold Nanoparticles: Modeling and Experiments

Nanoparticles are recognized as highly attractive tunable materials for designing field-effect biosensors with enhanced performance. In this work, we present a theoretical model for electrolyte-insulator-semiconductor capacitors (EISCAP) decorated with ligand-stabilized charged gold nanoparticles. The charged AuNPs are taken into account as additional, nanometer-sized local gates. The capacitance-voltage (C–V) curves and constant-capacitance (ConCap) signals of the AuNP-decorated EISCAPs have been simulated. The impact of the AuNP coverage on the shift of the C–V curves and the ConCap signals was also studied experimentally on Al–p-Si–SiO₂ EISCAPs decorated with positively charged aminooctanethiol-capped AuNPs. In addition, the surface of the EISCAPs, modified with AuNPs, was characterized by scanning electron microscopy for different immobilization times of the nanoparticles.

Ion specific effects on the immobilisation of charged gold nanoparticles on metal surfaces

Since the pioneering work of F. Hofmeister, Arch. Exp. Pathol. Pharmakol., 1888, 24, 247, ion specific effects have been steadily reported in the context of colloidal or protein stabilisation in electrolyte solutions. Although the observed effects are omnipresent in chemistry and biology, their origin is still under ferocious discussion. Here, we report on ion specific effects affecting the self-assembly of amine and carboxylic acid functionalised gold nanoparticles on metal surfaces as well as in electrolyte solution as a function of the monovalent cations Li+, Na+, K+ and Cs+. Mercaptooctanoic acid and 1,8-amine-octanethiol functionalised gold nanoparticles were adsorbed on structured AuPd/Pt substrates under addition of the respective chloride salts. Furthermore, the influence of the same salts on the salt induced aggregation of these AuNP was investigated. Our results demonstrate that the assembly processes on the metal surface as well as in electrolyte solution are influenced by the addition of different cations. We attribute the observed effects to ion pairing of the functional end groups with the added cations. With these findings we introduce a new parameter to control the self-assembly of 2D AuNP arrays on solid supports or of 3D AuNP networks in solution, which could be of relevance for the fabrication of new tailor-made functional materials or for biomedical applications.

Single Interdigital Transducer Approach for Gravimetrical SAW Sensor Applications in Liquid Environments

Surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices are well known for mass-sensitive sensor applications. In biosensing applications, chemical and biochemically evoked binding processes on surfaces are detected in liquid environments using delay line or resonator sensor configurations, preferably in combination with the appropriate microfluidic devices. All configurations share the common feature of analyzing the transmission characteristic of the propagating SAW. In this paper, a novel SAW-based impedance sensor type is introduced which uses only one interdigital transducer (IDT), simultaneously as the SAW generator and the sensor element. Here, the input port reflection coefficient S₁₁ is measured at the IDT instead of the commonly used S₂₁ transmission forward gain parameter. Thus, a sharp and distinct peak of the S₁₁ spectrum is obtained, enabling a comfortable direct readout of the sensor signal. Proof of the concept was gained by analyzing the specific binding of the 4-mercaptophenylacetic acid gold nanoparticles (MPA–AuNP) directly to the IDT surface. The corresponding binding kinetic of the MPA–AuNP on the functionalized gold surface has been analyzed and a sensitivity of 7.4 mΩ nM⁻¹ has been determined.

Directed Self-Assembly and Infrared Reflection Absorption Spectroscopy Analysis of Amphiphilic and Zwitterionic Janus Gold Nanoparticles

Here, we report an approach to use infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS) for the unambiguous proof of the presence as well as the spatial distribution of organic ligands on the Janus gold nanoparticle (AuNP) surface. For this purpose we synthesized amphiphilic and zwitterionic Janus AuNPs and immobilized these on pretreated gold surfaces by directed self-assembly, exploiting hydrophilic/hydrophobic or electrostatic interactions, respectively. Thus, we obtained macroscopic two-dimensional arrays of Janus AuNPs exhibiting a specific orientation. These arrays were investigated by IRRAS, and the obtained spectra revealed only peaks of the ligands facing the IR beam, while the ligands facing the gold substrate were not detected due to reflection of the IR beam on the AuNP cores. Thus, we describe a straightforward spectroscopic procedure to prove the Janus character of zwitterionic and amphiphilic AuNPs in the size range of 10-15 nm.

Ordered arrays of Au catalysts by FIB assisted heterogeneous dewetting

Synthesizing Au0.8Si0.2 nanocatalysts that are homogeneous in size and have controlled position is becoming a challenging and crucial prequisite for the fabrication of ordered semiconductor nanowires. In this study, Au0.8Si0.2 nanocatalysts are synthesized via dewetting of Au layers on Si(111) during thermal annealing in an ultra-high vacuum. In the first part of the paper, the mechanism of homogeneous dewetting is analyzed as a function of the Au-deposited thickness (h Au). We distinguish three different dewetting regimes: (I) for a low thickness ([Formula: see text]), a submonolyer coverage of Au is stabilized and there is no dewetting. (II) For an intermediate thickness ([Formula: see text]), there is both dewetting and Au0.8Si0.2 phase formation. The size and density of the Au0.8Si0.2 clusters are directly related to h Au. When cooling down to room temperature, the clusters decompose and reject the Si at the Au/Si substrate interface. (III) For a large thickness ([Formula: see text]), only dewetting takes place, without forming AuSi clusters. In this regime, the dewetting is kinetically controlled by the self-diffusion of Au (activation energy ∼0.43 eV) without evidence of an Si-alloying effect. As a practical consequence, when relying solely on the homogeneous dewetting of Au/Si(111) to form the Au0.8Si0.2 catalysts (without a supply of Si atoms from vapor), regime II should be used to obtain good size and density control. In the second part of the paper, a process for ordering the catalysts using focused ion beam-(FIB) assisted dewetting (heterogeneous dewetting) is developed. We show that no matter what the FIB milling conditions and the Au nominal thickness are, dewetting is promoted by ion beam irradiation and is accompanied by the formation of Au0.8Si0.2 droplets. The droplets preferentially form on the patterned areas, while in similar annealing conditions, they do not form on the unpatterned areas. This behavior is attributed to the larger Au-Si interdiffusion in the patterned areas, which results from the Si amorphization induced by the FIB. A systematic analysis of the position of the nanodroplets shows their preferential nucleation inside the patterns, while thicker platelets of almost pure Au are observed between the patterns. The evolutions of the size homogeneity and the occupancy rate of the patterns are quantified as a function of the FIB dose and annealing temperature. Nice arrays of perfectly ordered AuSi catalysts are obtained after optimizing the FIB and dewetting conditions.

The conquest of middle-earth: combining top-down and bottom-up nanofabrication for constructing nanoparticle based devices

The development of top-down nanofabrication techniques has opened many possibilities for the design and realization of complex devices based on single molecule phenomena such as e.g. single molecule electronic devices. These impressive achievements have been complemented by the fundamental understanding of self-assembly phenomena, leading to bottom-up strategies to obtain hybrid nanomaterials that can be used as building blocks for more complex structures. In this feature article we highlight some relevant published work as well as present new experimental results, illustrating the versatility of self-assembly methods combined with top-down fabrication techniques for solving relevant challenges in modern nanotechnology. We present recent developments on the use of hierarchical self-assembly methods to bridge the gap between sub-nanometer and micrometer length scales. By the use of non-covalent self-assembly methods, we show that we are able to control the positioning of nanoparticles on surfaces, and to address the deterministic assembly of nano-devices with potential applications in plasmonic sensing and single-molecule electronics experiments.
