Abstract
Bis(tpy)quaterthiophenes with symmetrically distributed two and four 6-bromohexyl side groups were prepared and modified by the reaction with triethylphosphine to give the corresponding ionic species. Both ionic and non-ionic bis(tpy)quaterthiophenes (unimers) were assembled with Zn(2+) and Fe(2+) ions to conjugated metallo-supramolecular polymers (MSPs), of which the ionic ones are soluble in alcohols and those derived from tetrasubstituted unimers are soluble even in water. The differences in assembly are specified between systems with (i) ionic and non-ionic unimers, (ii) Zn(2+) and Fe(2+) ion couplers, and (iii) methanol and water solvents. A substantial decrease in the stability of Fe-MSPs and a surprisingly high red shift of the luminescence band of Zn-MSPs were observed on going from methanol to aqueous solutions.

Abstract
Due to their inherently dynamic natures and fascinating photoluminescent/photoelectronic properties, coordination compounds of metal ions and conjugated terpyridine ligands have attracted considerable attention as functional materials for a variety of potential applications. In this feature article, a summary of recent work toward the development of one- (1D), two- (2D), and three-dimensional (3D) supramolecular polymers, networks, and metallomacrocycles based on zinc metal ion coordination of conjugated units bearing terpyridine ligands is presented, and it is shown how it fits within the overall framework of work in this field. Here, a sequential study from terpyridines as basic building blocks to their zinc-coordinated supramolecular 1D polymers, 2D macrocycles, and 2D and 3D networks is developed. These networks are compared with respect to their thermal stabilities, molecular organization, and linear and nonlinear optical properties. This work opens new prospects for the development of supramolecular chemistry of terpyridines and other transition metal ions, and also their application in future optoelectronic devices.

Abstract
Preparation, metal ion complexation, and coordinative assembly into organized electro-chromic films of a polyaniline derivative P1 substituted with tert-butyloxycarbonyl (boc) and terpyridine (tpy) substituent groups in alternating sequence are described. Cleavage of the boc groups after processing into thin films is also described. P1 is prepared upon Pd-catalyzed polycondensation of N-tert-butyloxycarbonyl-4,4'-dibromodiphenylamine and 4'(4-aminophenyl)-2,2':6,2''-terpyridine. The molecular weight is in the range of oligomers, the tetramer and pentamer being the most abundant species. P1 is soluble in common organic solvents. Solutions are pale yellow with blue or green fluorescence depending on the solvent. Fluorescence quantum yields up to 68% are found. P1 is able to complex divalent metal salts such as zinc(II) chloride, for example. Titration experiments indicate the formation of 2:1 tpy:metal ion complexes. Layer-by-layer (LbL) assembled films of metal ion complexes of P1 can be prepared, if negatively charged substrates are alternately dipped into solutions of metal(II) hexafluorophosphates and P1. Films of the zinc and nickel ion complex of P1 are lemon yellow in the neutral state and change color into greenish gray upon anodic oxidation, while Co-containing films are purple and change color into grayish blue upon oxidation. All color changes are reversible under ambient conditions. ATR-IR studies indicate that thermal treatment of the films at 180 °C, or acid treatment, e.g. with 5% aqueous trifluoroacetic acid solution, results in cleavage of the boc groups. P1 is transformed into the polyaniline derivative P2 with tpy substituent groups at every second N atom in the backbone. Films of metal ion complexes of P2 are also electrochromic albeit the colors differ slightly from those of P1. For example, the absorption maximum of the Zn-P2 film is at 456 nm, whereas it is at 446 nm for the corresponding Zn-P1 film. Prior to cleavage of the boc group, electrochromic switching times are 1.1 to 2.0 s for 30 to 40 nm thick films, while after the cleavage 0.5 to 1.2 s are found. The contrast is 13 to 19%, and not affected by the cleavage. Because of high stability, fast switching, and high contrast, the films might be useful as active materials in electrochromic devices.

Abstract
A series of hydrophilic per-6-thio-6-deoxy-γ-cyclodextrins (CDs) were synthesized from per-6-iodo-6-deoxy-γ-CD. These new hosts are able to solubilize polycyclic aromatic guests in aqueous solution to much higher extents than native CDs. Phase-solubility diagrams were mostly linear in accordance with both 1:1 and 1:2 CD-guest complexes in aqueous solution. The stoichiometry of the inclusion complexes was further investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy, which revealed very pronounced Stokes shifts typical for 1:2 complexes. This finding was further consolidated by quantum mechanical calculations of dimer formation of the guests and space-filling considerations by using the cross-sectional areas of the CDs and guests. The calculated dimerization energies correlated well with the binding free energies measured for the 1:2 complexes, and provided the main contribution to the driving force of complexation in the γ-CD cavity.

Abstract
Two back-to-back terpyridine ligands using fluorenyl as bridging group (1-L and 2-L) and their corresponding dinuclear platinum(II) complexes (1 and 2) were synthesized and characterized. Their electronic absorption, photoluminescence, and the triplet transient difference absorption were systematically investigated. Both ligands possess intense (1)pi,pi* absorption in the UV region, and they exhibit structured (1)pi,pi* fluorescence around 400 nm. With addition of p-toluenesulfonic acid to the ligands, both the absorption band and the emission band are red-shifted because of the increased electron-withdrawing ability of the protonated terpyridines and possible mixture of some intraligand charge transfer (ILCT) character. For complexes 1 and 2, they both exhibit broad and strong absorption between 400 and 500 nm, which is assigned as the (1)pi,pi*/(1)ILCT/(1)MLCT (metal-to-ligand charge transfer) transition. The involvement of (1)ILCT in the lowest excited state is evident by the acid titration experiment of the ligands. At room temperature, the complexes exhibit dual emission that admixes fluorescence and phosphorescence from the (1,3)pi,pi*/(1,3)ILCT/(1,3)MLCT states. The assignment of the emitting states is based on the distinct emission lifetimes, different sensitivity to oxygen quenching, and different temperature dependency. Both complexes exhibit emission at 77 K, which is assigned as the mixture of (3)pi,pi*/(3)MLCT. 1 and 2 also exhibit two triplet excited-state absorption bands in the visible to the NIR region, which are tentatively attributed to the (3)pi,pi* and (3)MLCT/(3)ILCT state. In addition, the connection pattern between the fluorenyl component and the terpyridyl components influences the excited-state characteristics of both the ligands and the complexes. Ligand 1-L and its corresponding platinum complex 1 that have the triplet bond connection between the fluorenyl and terpyridyl components exhibit a red-shifted low-energy absorption band, an emission band, and a transient absorption band compared to ligand 2-L and complex 2 that have the fluorenyl directly attached to terpyridyl components. These differences could be rationalized by the enhanced conjugation between the fluorenyl and terpyridyl components in 1-L and 1 because of the better coplanarity induced by the triple bond.

Abstract
Ultrafast light-induced processes in a series of pi-conjugated mono-, bis-, tris- and tetrakis(terpyridine) derivatives are investigated by femtosecond time-resolved spectroscopy. Non-exponential excited-state dynamics involving singlet-triplet intersystem crossing are observed which span from picoseconds to nanoseconds (see figure). Time-resolved spectroscopy is applied to investigate the ultrafast relaxation dynamics of several pi-conjugated mono-, bis-, tris- and tetrakis(terpyridine) derivatives. This particular series of structurally closely related systems was prepared applying efficient synthetic strategies and resembles key building blocks for a wide range of photoactive complexes, dendrimers and metallo-polymers with resulting potential applications, for example, in photovoltaics or as organic light-emitting diodes. Aiming for applications of supramolecular assemblies based on these recently presented terpyridine ligands a detailed knowledge of the light-induced processes of the ligands themselves represents a prerequisite. By applying femtosecond time-resolved absorption spectroscopy in concert with time-resolved fluorescence and Raman measurements, we detail the photophysical properties.
