Concentration Regimes in Solutions of Polyelectrolyte Stars

Controlled Molecular Assembly via Dynamic Confinement of Solvent

Assembly from ultrasmall solution droplets follows a different dynamic from that of larger scales. Using an independently controlled microfluidic probe in an atomic force microscope, subfemtoliter aqueous droplets containing polymers produce well-defined features with dimensions as small as tens of nanometers. The initial shape of the droplet and the concentration of solute within the droplet play significant roles in the final assembly of polymers due to the ultrafast evaporation rate and spatial confinement by the small droplets. These effects are used to control the final molecular assembly in terms of feature geometry and distribution and packing of individual molecules within the features. This work introduces new means of control over molecular assembly, bringing us closer to programmable synthesis for chemistry and materials science. The outcomes pave the way for three-dimensional (3D) nanoprinting in additive manufacturing.

SANS from Salt-Free Aqueous Solutions of Hydrophilic and Highly Charged Star-Branched Polyelectrolytes

Scattering functions of sodium sulfonated polystyrene (NaPSS) star-branched polyelectrolytes with high sulfonation degrees were measured from their salt-free aqueous solutions, using the Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) technique. Whatever the concentration c, they display two maxima. The first, of abscissa q₁*, is related to a position order between star cores and scales as q₁* ∝ c^1/3. The second, of abscissa q₂*, is also observed in the scattering function of a semi-dilute solution of NaPSS linear polyelectrolytes. In the dilute regime (c < c*, non-overlapping stars), peak abscissa does not depend on concentration c and is just an intramolecular characteristic associated with the electrostatic repulsion between arms of the same star. In the semi-dilute regime, due to the star interpenetration, the scattering function – through the peak position, reflects repulsion between arms of the same star or of different stars. The c threshold between these distinct c-dependencies of q₂* in the dilute and semi-dilute regimes is estimated as c*. Just as simple is the measurement of the geometrical radius R of the star obtained from the q₁* value at c* through the relation 2R = 2π/q₁*. By considering NaPSS stars of the same functionality with different degrees of polymerization per arm N_a, we find R scaling linearly with N_a, suggesting an elongated average conformation of the arms. This is in agreement with theoretical predictions and simulations. Meanwhile the value of q₂* measured in the dilute regime does not allow any inhomogeneous counterion distribution inside the stars to be revealed.

Conformational effect on small angle neutron scattering behavior of interacting polyelectrolyte solutions: a perspective of integral equation theory

We present small angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements of deuterium oxide (D(2)O) solutions of linear and star sodium poly(styrene sulfonate) (NaPSS) as a function of polyelectrolyte concentration. Emphasis is on understanding the dependence of their SANS coherent scattering cross section I(Q) on the molecular architecture of single polyelectrolyte. The key finding is that for a given concentration, star polyelectrolytes exhibit more pronounced characteristic peaks in I(Q), and the position of the first peak occurs at a smaller Q compared to their linear counterparts. Based on a model of integral equation theory, we first compare the SANS experimental I(Q) of salt-free polyelectrolyte solutions with that predicted theoretically. Having seen their satisfactory qualitative agreement, the dependence of counterion association behavior on polyelectrolyte geometry and concentration is further explored. Our predictions reveal that the ionic environment of polyelectrolyte exhibits a strong dependence on polyelectrolyte geometry at lower polyelectrolyte concentration. However, when both linear and star polyelectrolytes exceed their overlap concentrations, the spatial distribution of counterion is found to be essentially insensitive to polyelectrolyte geometry due to the steric effect.

Ionic strength dependence of polyelectrolyte brush thickness

Intramolecular repulsion between charged monomers imposes intrinsic tension in polyion, modifies its elasticity, and changes the dependence of polyelectrolyte brush thickness on salt concentration. We demonstrate that intrinsic polyion tension gives rise to a plateau of the brush thickness in the middle of salt dominated regime and to a subsequent steeper brush contraction with increasing salt concentration.

Spherical brushes within spherical cavities: a self-consistent field and Monte Carlo study

We present an extensive numerical study on the behavior of spherical brushes confined into a spherical cavity. Self-consistent field (SCF) and off-lattice Monte Carlo (MC) techniques are used in order to determine the monomer and end-chain density profiles and the cavity pressure as a function of the brush properties. A comparison of the results obtained via SCF, MC, and the Flory theory for polymer solutions reveals SCF calculations to be a valuable alternative to MC simulations in the case of free and softly compressed brushes, while the Flory's theory accounts remarkably well for the pressure in the strongly compressed regime. In the range of high compressions, we have found the cavity pressure P to follow a scale relationship with the monomer volume fraction v, P approximately v(alpha). SCF calculations give alpha=2.15+/-0.05, whereas MC simulations lead to alpha=2.73+/-0.04. The underestimation of alpha by the SCF method is explained in terms of the inappropriate account of the monomer density correlations when a mean field approach is used.
