Toward Green Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization: Current Status and Future Challenges

Reversible-deactivation radical polymerizations (RDRPs) have revolutionized synthetic polymer chemistry. Nowadays, RDRPs facilitate design and preparation of materials with controlled architecture, composition, and functionality. Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) has evolved beyond traditional polymer field, enabling synthesis of organic-inorganic hybrids, bioconjugates, advanced polymers for electronics, energy, and environmentally relevant polymeric materials for broad applications in various fields. This review focuses on the relation between ATRP technology and the 12 principles of green chemistry, which are paramount guidelines in sustainable research and implementation. The green features of ATRP are presented, discussing the environmental and/or health issues and the challenges that remain to be overcome. Key discoveries and recent developments in green ATRP are highlighted, while providing a perspective for future opportunities in this area.

Progress in the Preparation of Functional and (Bio)Degradable Polymers via Living Polymerizations

This review presents the latest developments in (bio)degradable approaches and functional aliphatic polyesters and polycarbonates prepared by typical ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of lactones and trimethylene carbonates. It also considers several recent innovative synthetic methods including radical ring-opening polymerization (RROP), atom transfer radical polyaddition (ATRPA), and simultaneous chain- and step-growth radical polymerization (SCSRP) that produce aliphatic polyesters. With regard to (bio)degradable approaches, we have summarized several representative cleavable linkages that make it possible to obtain cleavable polymers. In the section on functional aliphatic polyesters, we explore the syntheses of specific functional lactones, which can be performed by ring-opening copolymerization of typical lactone/lactide monomers. Last but not the least, in the recent innovative methods section, three interesting synthetic methodologies, RROP, ATRPA, and SCSRP are discussed in detail with regard to their reaction mechanisms and polymer functionalities.

A Strategy toward Cyclic Topologies Based on the Dynamic Behavior of a Bis(hindered amino)disulfide Linker

A simple and efficient method to generate macrocyclic structures has been developed based on the dynamic behavior of the linker bis(2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)disulfide (BiTEMPS). The prime linear structure was transformed into a (macro)cycle using the following sequence: 1) thiol-ene reaction with a BiTEMPS derivative to afford the linear precursor, then 2) an entropy-driven transformation induced by diluting and heating. The radicals generated from BiTEMPS upon heating are highly tolerant toward a variety of chemical species, including oxygen and olefins, but they exhibit high reactivity in exchange reactions, which can be applied to the topology transformation of various skeletons. The advantages of the present method, namely, its procedural simplicity and substrate versatility, are demonstrated by the gram-scale synthesis of cyclic compounds with low and relatively high molecular weight.

Synthesis of Poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone)-Based Polymer Bottlebrushes by ATRPA and RAFT Polymerization: Toward Drug Delivery Application

Atom transfer radical polyaddition (ATRPA) was utilized herein to synthesize a specific functional polyester. We conducted ATRPA of 4-vinylbenzyl 2-bromo-2-phenylacetate (VBBPA) inimer and successfully obtained a linear type poly(VBBPA) (PVBBPA) polyester with benzylic bromides along the backbone. To obtain a novel amphiphilic polymer bottlebrush, however, the lateral ATRP chain extension of PVBBPA with N-vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP) met the problem of quantitative dimerization. By replacing the bromides to xanthate moieties efficiently, we thus observed a pseudo linear first order reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization to obtain novel poly(4-vinylbenzyl-2-phenylacetate)-g-poly(NVP) (PVBPA-g-PNVP) amphiphilic polymer bottlebrushes. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) and particle size of the amphiphilic polymer bottlebrushes were characterized by fluorescence spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) (CMCs < 0.5 mg/mL; particle sizes = ca. 100 nm). Toward drug delivery application, we examined release profiles using a model drug of Nile red at different pH environments (3, 5, and 7). Eventually, low cytotoxicity and well cell uptake of the Madin-Darby Canine Kidney Epithelial (MDCK) for the polymer bottlebrush micelles were demonstrated.

Optimization of atom transfer radical polyadditions using commercially available catalytic systems allowed obtaining control over the polyester architecture and functionality and functional linear polyesters with high molecular weight (M_w = 16 200).

Polymerization and degradation of aliphatic polyesters synthesized by atom transfer radical polyaddition

By tuning leaving group affinity, the aliphatic polyesters synthesized by ATRPA can avoid lactonization and obtain high molecular weights.

Combination of ATRA and ATRC for the synthesis of periodic vinyl copolymers

A new approach to periodic vinyl copolymers via combination of atom transfer radical addition (ATRA) and atom transfer radical coupling (ATRC) is reported. The two examples are methyl methacrylate (MMA) and styrene (St) periodic copolymer (P(SMMS)) and acrylonitrile (AN) and St periodic copolymer (P(SAAS)). First, two monomer sequence units (MSU) with built-in sequence, SMMS and SAAS, are synthesized through the controlled ATRA of two ATRP initiators with St. Then, the ATRC of SMMS and SAAS are conducted at high radical conditions to generate two types of high-molecular-weight copolymers, P(SMMS) and P(SAAS). Though side reactions can not be totally avoided, characterizations of the polymer structure with a variety of means confirm that the main chain structures of P(SMMS) and (PSAAS) are predominantly with the periodic sequences from the MSUs. Attempts to suppress the side reactions are successful via the MNP-mediated ATRC of SMMS and SAAS.

A single-component inimer containing cross-linkable ultrathin polymer coating for dense polymer brush growth

We have developed a highly versatile universal approach to grow polymer brushes from a variety of substrates with high grafting density by using a single-component system. We describe a random copolymer which consists of an inimer, p-(2-bromoisobutyloylmethyl)styrene (BiBMS), copolymerized with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Thermal cross-linking created a mat that was stable during long exposure in organic solvent even with sonication or during Soxhlet extraction. The absolute bromine density was determined via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to be 1.86 ± 0.12 Br atoms/nm(3). The ratio of experimental density to calculated absolute initiator density suggests that ~25% of the bromine is lost during cross-linking. Surface-initiated ATRP (SI-ATRP) was used to grow PMMA brushes on the substrate with sacrificial initiator in solution. The brushes were characterized by ellipsometry, XPS, and atomic force microscopy (AFM) to determine thickness, composition, and homogeneity. By correlating the molecular weight of polymer grown in solution with the brush layer thickness, a high grafting density of 0.80 ± 0.06 chains/nm(2) was calculated. By synthesizing the copolymer before cross-linking on the substrate, this single-component approach avoids any issues with blend miscibility as might be present for a multicomponent curable mixture, while resulting in high chain density on a range of substrates.
