Humidity Dependence of the Ionic Conductivity of Polyelectrolyte Complexes

3D Printing of Aqueous Two-Phase Systems with Linear and Bottlebrush Polyelectrolytes

We formed core-shell-like polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) from an anionic bottlebrush polymer with poly (acrylic acid) side chains with a cationic linear poly (allylamine hydrochloride). By varying the pH, the number of side chains of the polyanionic BB polymers (Nbb), the charge density of the polyelectrolytes, and the salt concentration, the phase separation behavior and salt resistance of the complexes could be tuned by the conformation of the BBs. By combining the linear/bottlebrush polyelectrolyte complexation with all-liquid 3D printing, flow-through tubular constructs were produced that showed selective transport across the PEC membrane comprising the walls of the tubules. These tubular constructs afford a new platform for flow-through delivery systems.

A Perspective on the Glass Transition and the Dynamics of Polyelectrolyte Multilayers and Complexes

Polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) or polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs), formed by layer-by-layer assembly or the mixing of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes (PEs) in aqueous solution, respectively, have potential applications in health, energy, and the environment. PEMs and PECs are very tunable because their structure and properties are influenced by factors such as pH, ionic strength, salt type, humidity, and temperature. Therefore, it is increasingly important to understand how these factors affect PECs and PEMs on a molecular level. In this Feature Article, we summarize our contributions to the field in the development of approaches to quantify the swelling, thermal properties, and dynamic mechanical properties of PEMs and PECs. First, the role of water as a plasticizer and in the glass-transition temperature (Tg) in both strong poly(diallyldimethylammonium)/poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PDADMA/PSS) and weak poly(allylamine hydrochloride)/poly(acrylic acid) (PAH/PAA) systems is presented. Then, factors influencing the dynamics of PECs and PEMs are discussed. We also reflect on the swelling of PEMs in response to different salts and solvent additives. Last, the nature of water's microenvironment in PEMs/PECs is discussed. A special emphasis is placed on experimental techniques, along with molecular simulations. Taken together, this review presents an outlook and offers recommendations for future research directions, such as studying the additional effects of hydrogen-bonding hydrophobic interactions.

High-Precision Stretchable Ionic Temperature Sensor Passivated with a Liquid Metal/Block Copolymer Multilayer Film

Moisture barriers are essential for ionic sensors because moisture has a direct impact on the stability and reliability of electrochemical properties. So far, stretchable moisture barriers that can maximize the advantage of using deformable ion gel as the active material have been rarely investigated and remain as a technological challenge. This study proposes a four-layer (4L) stretchable moisture barrier alternatively composed of a poly(styrene-isobutylene-styrene) copolymer (SiBS) film (2 μm in thickness) and a eutectic gallium-indium liquid metal (LM) film (1 μm in thickness). This multilayer barrier has a low water permeability of 9.09 × 10^-20 m²/Pa s at 50% uniaxial strain (ε) and retains the barrier properties at repeated stretchable cycles at ε = 50%. This study demonstrates a skin-attached precise ion gel-based temperature sensor that is independent of moisture change (even dipping in water) and body motions.

Humidity- tunable liquefaction of Cr thin-film and its application to patterning

Electric field induced liquefaction of chromium (Cr) thin-films, being a surface-based process, is affected by the moisture content in the surroundings. The said process is an electrochemical reaction, which takes place on an electrically stressed Cr thin-film. The reaction results in a liquid region, which appears to flow out radially from the tip of the cathode. A proper understanding of the phenomenon is warranted as it is applied for performing a nanolithography process, electrolithography (ELG). In this study we have focused on the effect of relative humidity (RH) on the material formation and transport on electrically stressed Cr thin-film. Varying the RH over a wide range, the phenomenon is studied using different levels of DC stress. The effect of the applied DC stress coupled with varying levels of RH showed trends which are explained qualitatively and quantitatively. The results indicate that RH could be a pivotal parameter affecting the above-mentioned phenomenon on electrically stressed Cr thin-films and could significantly alter the minimum feature size attainable by ELG. To demonstrate the effect of RH on ELG, lines are drawn at various humidity levels resulting in greater than 100% increase in the attainable line width when RH is increased by about 40%.

Water-Saturated Ion Gel for Humidity-Independent High Precision Epidermal Ionic Temperature Sensor

Although ion gels are attractive sensing materials for deformable epidermal sensors or implantable devices, their sensing performances are highly affected by environmental humidity change, so that their sensing reliability cannot be secured. This study proposes a new concept of maintaining the high-precision temperature sensing performance of highly deformable ion gel sensors. In this approach, a hydrophobic ion gel sensing layer is kept water-saturated by attaching a hydrogel layer, rather than attempting to completely block water penetration. This study performs experimental and theoretical investigation on water concentration in the ion gel, using the analysis of mass transportation at the interface of the ion gel and the hydrogel. By using the charge relaxation time of the ionic molecules, the temperature sensor is not affected by environmental humidity in the extreme range of humidity (30%-100%). This study demonstrates a highly deformable on-skin temperature sensor which shows the same performance either in water or dry state and while exercising with large strains (ε = 50%).

Time-Ionic Strength Superposition: A Unified Description of Chain Relaxation Dynamics in Polyelectrolyte Complexes

Addition of salt speeds up chain relaxation dynamics in polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs), and time-salt superposition (TSS) approaches to describe the linear viscoelastic response of PECs are well-established. However, TSS is carried out at fixed initial polyelectrolyte concentrations, and varying the initial polyelectrolyte concentration results in distinct TSS master curves. In this contribution, we show that accounting for the small ions that accompany the oppositely charged polyelectrolyte chains (designated as accompanying counterions) enables assimilation of these distinct TSS master curves into a single universal master curve. This approach, that we christen as time-ionic strength superposition (TISS), enables a unified description of the PEC viscoelastic response in terms of the solution ionic strength, that accounts for both the accompanying counterions and the added ions, and underlines the dynamic similarities between PECs and semidilute polymer solutions. The sticky electrostatic associations among the oppositely charged chains, however, contribute additional relaxation modes in the PECs. We demonstrate that the time scales of these additional relaxation modes are described quantitatively by a modified sticky Rouse model that accounts for the influence of solution ionic strength on electrostatic screening and chain friction.

Ionic conductivity of solid polyelectrolyte complexes with varying water content: application of the dynamic structure model

We present a systematic study of the dc conductivity of solid polyelectrolyte complexes (PEC) of type x_PSS PSS·(1 − x_PSS) PDADMA as a function of temperature, and of PSS and water content, respectively. The data are discussed in the framework of the dynamic structure model.

Hydration and Temperature Response of Water Mobility in Poly(diallyldimethylammonium)-Poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) Complexes

The combination of all-atom molecular dynamics simulations with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) has been exploited to investigate the influence of temperature and hydration on the water distribution and mobility in poly(diallyldimethylammonium) (PDADMA) and poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) complexes. The findings show that the vast majority of the water molecules hydrating the polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) with 18-30 wt % hydration are effectively immobilized due to the strong interactions between the PE charge groups and water. Temperature and hydration were found to decrease similarly the fraction of strongly bound water. Additionally, at low hydration or at low temperatures, water motions become dominantly local vibrations and rotations instead of translational motion; translation dominance is recovered in a similar fashion by increase of both temperature and hydration. DSC experiments corroborate the simulation findings by showing that nonfreezing, bound water dominates in hydrated PECs at comparable hydrations. Our results raise attention to water as an equal variable to temperature in the design and engineering of stimuli-responsive polyelectrolyte materials and provide mechanistic explanation for the similarity.

Enzyme Multilayers on Graphene-Based FETs for Biosensing Applications

Electrochemical sensors represent a powerful tool for real-time measurement of a variety of analytes of much significance to different areas, ranging from clinical diagnostics to food technology. Point-of-care devices which can be used at patient bedside or for online monitoring of critical parameters are of great importance in clinical daily routine. In this work, portable, low-cost electrochemical sensors for a fast and reliable detection of the clinically relevant analyte urea have been developed. The intrinsic pH sensitivity of reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-based field-effect transistors (FETs) was exploited to monitor the enzymatic hydrolysis of urea. The functionalization of the sensor platform using the layer-by-layer technique is especially advantageous for the immobilization of the biorecognition element provided that this approach preserves the enzyme integrity as well as the rGO surface. The great selectivity of the enzyme (urease) combined with the high sensitivity of rGO-based FETs result in the construction of urea biosensors with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1μM and a linear range up to 1mM. Quantification of Cu²⁺ with a LOD down to 10nM was performed by taking advantage of the specific inhibition of urease in the presence of heavy metals. These versatile biosensors offer great possibilities for further development of highly sensitive enzyme-based FETs for real-time, label-free detection of a wide variety of clinically relevant analytes.

Morphology and ion diffusion in PEDOT:Tos. A coarse grained molecular dynamics simulation

A Martini coarse-grained Molecular Dynamics (MD) model for the doped conducting polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) is developed. It is shown that the diffusion coefficients decrease exponentially as the hydration level is reduced.

Ion Conduction and Its Activation in Hydrated Solid Polyelectrolyte Complexes

For the first time, temperature-dependent conductivities at constant water content for a series of solid polyelectrolyte complexes with varying mixing ratios of anionic poly(sodium 4-styrene sulfonate) and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) are presented. For water absorption, the samples are first equilibrated at an ambient temperature and at fixed relative humidity (RH). During the conductivity measurements, the so achieved water content of the samples is kept constant. At all of the hydration levels, the dc conductivities of the hydrated polyelectrolyte complexes (PEC) display Arrhenius behavior with activation enthalpies that are significantly lower than those of dry complexes. The activation enthalpy decreases linearly with water content. The lower activation enthalpies in case of hydrated as compared to dried complexes are attributed to a lowering of the energy barriers for ion motion. Finally, it is shown that the temperature-dependent conductivity spectra at constant water content obey the time-temperature superposition principle. Additionally, temperature-dependent conductivities at constant water content are compared to data sets determined in a separate study with constant RH at all of the temperatures. For the latter case, the influence of the type of alkali ion is also considered. Using the broad variety of data sets, the influences of water content and temperature on the conductivity mechanism can be separated from each other.

Quantifying and controlling the cation uptake upon hydrated ionic liquid-induced swelling of polyelectrolyte multilayers

Controlling the uptake of specific ions in polyelectrolyte multilayers is of interest for various fields of application. Here, we quantify the amount of cation of an ionic liquid, namely 1,3-bis(cyanomethyl)imidazolium chloride, incorporated into polyelectrolyte multilayers upon contact with an ionic liquid solution. The ion partition equilibrium is determined depending on concentration in solution, employing attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy. Generating an excess charge in multilayers by post-preparative manipulation of their charge balance, one can control the incorporated amount. Three multilayer systems are assembled for this purpose, i.e., PSS/PDADMAC, PSS/PAH and PAA/PDADMAC, employing poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS), poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC), poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA). The charge balance of the latter two films is manipulated by an external pH stimulus generating an excess positive or negative internal charge, respectively. The concentration of cations in PEM amounts to 30% to 100% of the bulk concentration and scales as PAA/PDADMAC > PSS/PDADMAC > PSS/PAH. Thus, post-preparative pH treatment may be a future tool to create ion-conductive polymer gel films with a desired concentration of small cations.

Effect of a three-dimensional hyperbranched structure on the ionic conduction of metallo-supramolecular polymers

3D metallo-supramolecular polymers exhibited 10–100 times higher ionic conductivity than their 1D equivalents due to the improved ion conduction pathway.

Shape-morphing nanocomposite origami

Nature provides a vast array of solid materials that repeatedly and reversibly transform in shape in response to environmental variations. This property is essential, for example, for new energy-saving technologies, efficient collection of solar radiation, and thermal management. Here we report a similar shape-morphing mechanism using differential swelling of hydrophilic polyelectrolyte multilayer inkjets deposited on an LBL carbon nanotube (CNT) composite. The out-of-plane deflection can be precisely controlled, as predicted by theoretical analysis. We also demonstrate a controlled and stimuli-responsive twisting motion on a spiral-shaped LBL nanocomposite. By mimicking the motions achieved in nature, this method offers new opportunities for the design and fabrication of functional stimuli-responsive shape-morphing nanoscale and microscale structures for a variety of applications.

Solid State Ionics: from Michael Faraday to green energy-the European dimension

Solid State Ionics has its roots essentially in Europe. First foundations were laid by Michael Faraday who discovered the solid electrolytes Ag2S and PbF2 and coined terms such as cation and anion, electrode and electrolyte. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the main lines of development toward Solid State Ionics, pursued in Europe, concerned the linear laws of transport, structural analysis, disorder and entropy and the electrochemical storage and conversion of energy. Fundamental contributions were then made by Walther Nernst, who derived the Nernst equation and detected ionic conduction in heterovalently doped zirconia, which he utilized in his Nernst lamp. Another big step forward was the discovery of the extraordinary properties of alpha silver iodide in 1914. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, the concept of point defects was established by Yakov Il'ich Frenkel, Walter Schottky and Carl Wagner, including the development of point-defect thermodynamics by Schottky and Wagner. In terms of point defects, ionic (and electronic) transport in ionic crystals became easy to visualize. In an 'evolving scheme of materials science', point disorder precedes structural disorder, as displayed by the AgI-type solid electrolytes (and other ionic crystals), by ion-conducting glasses, polymer electrolytes and nano-composites. During the last few decades, much progress has been made in finding and investigating novel solid electrolytes and in using them for the preservation of our environment, in particular in advanced solid state battery systems, fuel cells and sensors. Since 1972, international conferences have been held in the field of Solid State Ionics, and the International Society for Solid State Ionics was founded at one of them, held at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, in 1987.
