Effect of Thermal History and Shear on the Viscoelastic Response of iPP Containing an Oxalamide-Based Organic Compound

We report on the role of temperature and shear on the melt behavior of iPP in the presence of the organic compound N1,N1′-(propane-1,3-diyl)bis(N2-hexyloxalamide) (OXA3,6). It is demonstrated that OXA3,6 facilitates a viscosity suppression when it resides in the molten state. The viscosity suppression is attributed to the interaction of iPP chains/subchains with molten OXA3,6 nanoclusters. The exact molecular mechanism has not been identified; nevertheless, a tentative explanation is proposed. The observed viscosity suppression appears similar to that encountered in polymer melts filled with solid nanoparticles, with the difference that the OXA3,6 compound reported in this study facilitates the viscosity suppression in the molten state. Upon cooling, as crystal growth of OXA3,6 progresses, the decrease in viscosity is suppressed. Retrospectively, segmental absorption of iPP chains on the surface of micrometer-sized OXA3,6 crystallites favors the formation of dangling arms, yielding OXA3,6 crystallites decorated with partially absorbed iPP chains. In other words, the resulting OXA3,6 particle morphology resembles that of a hairy particle or a starlike polymer chain. Such hairy particles effectively facilitate a viscosity enhancement, similar to branched polymer chains. This hypothesis and its implications for the shear behavior of iPP are discussed and supported using plate–plate rheometry and slit-flow experiments combined with small-angle X-ray scattering analysis.

Flow-Induced Precursor Formation of Poly(l-lactic acid) under Pressure

For the first time, the influences of two inevitable processing fields (pressure and flow fields) on the crystallization of a semirigid molecular chain polymer, that is, poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA), were explored using a homemade pressuring and shearing device. The results reveal that the shear rate facilitated the generation of precursor because it induced oriented segment formation. It was found that the most sensitive shear temperature for the generation of PLLA precursor under 100 MPa was 180 °C. When the shear temperature was higher (e.g., 190 °C), the relaxation of shear-induced oriented segments was too quick to induce the generation of PLLA precursor. Oppositely, at a lower shear temperature (170 °C), the oriented segments were hard to relax within the whole shear rate range (3.1-31.4 s^-1). Annealing treatment was infaust to the PLLA precursor formation because it promoted the relaxation of oriented segments. Different from the shear and annealing, pressure played a more complicated role in the formation of PLLA precursor. Pressure decreased the free volume between PLLA molecular chains and meantime increased the supercooling of PLLA melt. In addition, PLLA chains tended to form locally oriented segment bundles to adapt to the pressurized state, which facilitated the formation of PLLA precursor and the following crystallization process. These two factors lowered the movability of PLLA chains and suppressed the relaxation of chain, so shear-induced orientation facilitated PLLA precursor formation under pressure. In that case, pressure and shear flow showed a synergetic promoting effect on the generation of PLLA precursor and the following crystallization process. These meaningful results could be helpful for comprehending the relationship between crystallization conditions and the crystallization behavior of PLLA and thus would provide guidance to fabricating the final products through controlling the crystallization process of PLLA.

Effect of Self-Assembly of Oxalamide Based Organic Compounds on Melt Behavior, Nucleation, and Crystallization of Isotactic Polypropylene

We report on the effect of an aliphatic oxalamide based nucleating agent (OXA3,6) on the melt and crystallization behavior of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) under defined shear conditions. Through polarized optical microscopy, we demonstrate that OXA3,6 self-assembles from the iPP melt into rhombic crystals whereas their size and distribution proved highly dependent on the employed cooling rates. The presence of 0.5 wt % of OXA3,6 in iPP results in a significant suppression in iPP melt viscosity, which could not be explained via molecular modeling. A possible cause for the drop in viscosity in the presence of OXA3,6 is attributed to the interaction (absorption) of high molecular weight iPP chains with the nucleating agent, thereby suppressing their contribution to the viscoelastic response of the melt. This proposed mechanism for the suppression in melt viscosity appears similar to that encountered by the homogeneous distribution of nanoparticles such as CNTs, graphene, and silica. Shear experiments, performed using a slit flow device combined with small-angle X-ray diffraction measurements, indicate that crystallization is significantly enhanced in the presence of OXA3,6 at relatively low shear rates despite its lowered sensitivity to shear. This enhancement in crystallization is attributed to the shear alignment of the rhombic OXA3,6 crystals that provide surface for iPP kebab growth upon cooling. Overall, the suppression in melt viscosity in combination with enhanced nucleation efficiency at low as well as high shear rates makes this self-assembling oxalamide based nucleating agent a promising candidate for fast processing.

Flow-Induced Crystallization of Polyamide-6

Flow-induced crystallization has been widely studied for a variety of polymers with the main focus on polyolefins. In this work, research has been conducted on the flow-induced crystallization of another important class of polymers, namely polyamides. Different polyamides-6 with varying molecular weight have been studied. At relatively modest values of shear rate, rheology has been used to study the kinetics of flow-induced crystallization. Typical scaling relations based on the longest relaxation time and the Rouse time – usually obtained for polyolefins – are tested for the polyamides under investigation in order to identify the different regimes of flow-induced crystallization. At high shear rates, a correct rheological signal was impossible to collect. However, the rheometer was used in this case to prepare the sample to be studied ex-situ by Wide Angle X-ray Scattering experiments to determine the onset shear rate for the formation of highly oriented shish-kebab structures.

Full Characterization of Multiphase, Multimorphological Kinetics in Flow-Induced Crystallization of IPP at Elevated Pressure

Understanding the complex crystallization behavior of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) in conditions comparable to those found in polymer processing, where the polymer melt experiences a combination of high shear rates and elevated pressures, is key for modeling and therefore predicting the final structure and properties of iPP products. Coupling a unique experimental setup, capable to apply wall shear rates similar to those experienced during processing and carefully control the pressure before and after flow is imposed, with in situ X-ray scattering and diffraction techniques (SAXS and WAXD) at fast acquisition rates (up to 30 Hz), a well-defined series of short-term flow experiments are carried out using 16 different combinations of wall shear rates (ranging from 110 to 440 s-1) and pressures (100-400 bar). A complete overview on the kinetics of structure development during and after flow is presented. Information about shish formation and growth of α-phase parents lamellae from the shish backbones is extracted from SAXS; the overall apparent crystallinity evolution, amounts of different phases (α, β, and γ), and morphologies developing in the shear layer (parent and daughter lamellae both in α and γ phase) are fully quantified from the analysis of WAXD data. Both flow rate and pressure were found to have a significant influence on the nucleation and the growth process of oriented and isotropic structures. Flow affects shish formation and the growth of α-parents; pressure acts on relaxation times, enhancing the effect of flow, and (mainly) on the growth rate of γ-phase. The remarkably high amount of γ-lamellae found in the oriented layer strongly indicates the nucleation of γ directly from the shish backbone. All the observations were conceptually in agreement with the flow-induced crystallization model framework developed in our group and represent a unique and valuable data set that will be used to further validate and implement our numerical modeling, filling the gap for quantitatively modeling crystallization during complicated processing operations like injection molding.

Inducing uniform single-crystal like orientation in natural rubber with constrained uniaxial stretch

The effect of flow on crystallization is commonly attributed to entropic reduction, which is caused by stretch and orientation of polymer chains but overlooks the role of flow on final-state free energy. With the aid of in situ synchrotron radiation wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and a homemade constrained uniaxial tensile testing machine, polycrystals possessing single-crystal-like orientation rather than uniaxial orientation are found during the constrained stretch of natural rubber, whereas the c-axis and a-axis align in the stretch direction (SD) and constrained direction (CD), respectively. Molecular dynamics simulation shows that aligning the a-axis of crystal nuclei in CD leads to the lowest free energy increase and favors crystal nucleation. This indicates that the nomenclature of strain-induced crystallization may not fully account for the nature of flow-induced crystallization (FIC) as strain mainly emphasizes the entropic reduction of initial melt, whereas stress rather than strain plays the dominant role in crystal deformation. The current work not only contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the mechanism of flow-induced crystallization but also demonstrates the potential application of constrained uniaxial tensile stretch for the creation of functional materials containing polycrystals that possess single-crystal-like orientation.

Self-regulation in flow-induced structure formation of polypropylene

Flow-induced structure formation is investigated with in situ wide-angle X-ray diffraction with high acquisition rate (30 Hz) using isotactic polypropylene in a piston-driven slit flow with high wall shear rates (up to ≈900 s(-1) ). We focus on crystallization within the shear layers that form in the high shear rate regions near the walls. Remarkably, the kinetics of the crystallization process show no dependence on either flow rate or flow time; the crystallization progresses identically regardless. Stronger or longer flows only increase the thickness of the layers. A conceptual model is proposed to explain the phenomenon. Above a certain threshold, the number of shish-kebabs formed affects the rheology such that further structure formation is halted. The critical amount is reached already within 0.1 s under the current flow conditions. The change in rheology is hypothesized to be a consequence of the "hairy" nature of shish. Our results have large implications for process modelling, since they suggest that for injection molding type flows, crystallization kinetics can be considered independent of deformation history.

A small-angle x-ray scattering system with a vertical layout

A small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) system with a vertical layout (V-SAXS) has been designed and constructed for in situ detection on nanostructures, which is well suitable for in situ study on self-assembly of nanoparticles at liquid interface and polymer processing. A steel-tower frame on a reinforced basement is built as the supporting skeleton for scattering beam path and detector platform, ensuring the system a high working stability and a high operating accuracy. A micro-focus x-ray source combining parabolic three-dimensional multi-layer mirror and scatteringless collimation system provides a highly parallel beam, which allows us to detect the very small angle range. With a sample-to-detector distance of 7 m, the largest measurable length scale is 420 nm in real space. With a large sample zone, it is possible to install different experimental setups such as film stretching machine, which makes the system perfect to follow the microstructures evolution of materials during processing. The capability of the V-SAXS on in situ study is tested with a drying experiment of a free latex droplet, which confirms our initial design.
