Abstract
In this study, six different donor-π-acceptor1-π-donor-acceptor2 type random co-polymers containing benzodithiophene as a donor, benzooxadiazole (BO), and thieno[3,4-c]pyrrole-4,6-dione (TPD) as acceptor, have been synthesized and characterized. In addition to the acceptor core ratio at different values, the effect of aromatic bridge structures on the optical, electronic, and photovoltaic properties of six different random co-polymers is investigated by using thiophene and selenophene structures as aromatic bridge units. To investigate how the acceptor unit ratio and replacement of aromatic bridge units impact the structural, electronic, and optical properties of the polymers, density functional theory (DFT) calculations are carried out for the tetramer models. The open-circuit voltage (VOC), which is strongly correlated with the HOMO levels of the donor material, is enhanced with the increasing ratio of the TPD moiety. On the other hand, the short-circuit current (JSC), which is associated with the absorption ability of the donor material, is improved by the increasing ratio of BO moiety with the π-bridges. BO moiety dominant selenophene π-bridged co-polymer (P4) showed the best performance with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.26%, a JSC of 11.44 mA cm2, a VOC of 0.80 V, and a fill factor (FF) of 68.81%.

Abstract
In recent decades, the demand for clean and renewable energy has grown increasingly urgent due to the irreversible alteration of the global climate change. As a result, organic solar cells (OSCs) have emerged as a promising alternative to address this issue. In this review, we summarize the recent progress in the molecular design strategies of benzodithiophene (BDT)-based polymer and small molecule donor materials since their birth, focusing on the development of main-chain engineering, side-chain engineering and other unique molecular design paths. Up to now, the state-of-the-art power conversion efficiency (PCE) of binary OSCs prepared by BDT-based donor materials has approached 20%. This work discusses the potential relationship between the molecular changes of donor materials and photoelectric performance in corresponding OSC devices in detail, thereby presenting a rational molecular design guidance for stable and efficient donor materials in future.

Abstract
Conjugated molecules with donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) moieties have garnered significant attention for their ability to form luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs). D-A-D molecules feature tunable bandgaps, which can be varied systematically to control the fluorescence wavelength of LMOFs. In this study, we prepared and characterized the fluorescence properties of two porous interpenetrated Zr-organic frameworks (PIZOFs) constructed using 4,4'-(benzo[c][1,2,5]selenadiazole-4,7-diylbis(ethyne-2,1-diyl))dibenzoic acid (L-Se) or 4,4'-(benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole-4,7-diylbis(ethyne-2,1-diyl))dibenzoic acid (L-S) as linkers. The corresponding MOFs are denoted as PIZOF-Se and PIZOF-S, respectively. Through our investigation, we explored the correlation between the structure of the frameworks and their respective optical properties. Our findings revealed that there are distinct differences in the fluorescence properties of the two PIZOFs. Specifically, the fluorescence of PIZOF-S is red-shifted from that characteristic of the corresponding linker, L-S. By contrast, the fluorescence of PIZOF-Se is substantially blue-shifted from that of linker L-Se. The emission of mixed-linker MOFs is explored by combining L-S or L-Se with structurally analogous, but nonfluorescent linker, 4,4'-((perfluoro-1,4-phenylene)bis(ethyne-2,1-diyl))dibenzoic acid (L-F). Based on steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence experiments, as well as confocal fluorescence microscopy combined with fluorescence lifetime imaging (FILM), we demonstrated that linker engineering is an effective method to tune the emission behavior of LMOFs.

Abstract
A selenonium organic counter ion has been used in polyoxometalate chemistry to develop a new aryl selenonium polyoxometalate (POM) hybrid, and its photocatalytic properties have been explored in comparison with an aryl sulfonium POM-hybrid counterpart for the first time. The chalcogenonium counterions, namely, methyldiphenylsulfonium trifluoromethane sulfonate (MDPST) and methyldiphenylselenonium trifluoromethane sulfonate (MDPSeT), and their octamolybdate ([Mo8O26]4-) hybrids, 1 and 2, with the general formula (C13H13X)4[Mo8O26] (where X = S for 1 and Se for 2) were synthesized and characterized. Hybrids 1 and 2 vary in their chalcogenonium cationic center (S+vs. Se+), which enabled a direct comparison of their photocatalytic properties as a function of the cationic center. The photocatalytic activities of hybrids 1 and 2 were tested using the reduction of dichromate (Cr2O72-) as a model reaction under UV irradiation. A 99% photocatalytic reduction of Cr2O72- with a rate constant of 0.0305 min-1 was achieved with hybrid 2, while only a 67% reduction with a rate constant of 0.0062 min-1 was observed with hybrid 1 in 180 minutes. The better catalytic performance of hybrid 2 may be correlated to the larger atomic radii of Se than S, which helps in better stabilizing the photogenerated electron-hole (e--h+) pair on the POM cluster by polarizing its lone pair more efficiently compared to S. The catalytic recyclability was tested for up to 4 cycles using hybrid 2, and up to 98% reduction was obtained even after the 4th cycle. Recyclability tests and control experiments also indicated the generation of some elemental Se through possible cleavage of some C-Se bonds of MDPSe under prolonged UV exposure during catalysis, and the Se thus generated was found to contribute to the catalytic reduction of dichromate. This study, therefore, opens new avenues for aryl selenonium moieties and their POM hybrids for potential catalytic applications.

Abstract
A novel molecular design for showing near-infrared (NIR) emission is still required for satisfying growing demands for NIR-light technology. In this research, hypervalent compounds with germanium (Ge)-fused azobenzene (GAz) scaffolds were discovered that can exhibit NIR emission (λPL =690∼721 nm, ΦPL =0.03∼0.04) despite compact π-conjugated systems. The unique optical properties are derived from the trigonal bipyramidal geometry of the hypervalent compounds constructed by combination of Ge and azobenzene-based tridentate ligands. Experimental and theoretical calculation results disclosed that the germanium-nitrogen (Ge-N) coordination at the equatorial position strongly reduces the energy level of the LUMO (lowest unoccupied molecular orbital), and the three-center four-electron (3 c-4 e) bond in the apical position effectively rises the energy level of the HOMO (highest occupied molecular orbital). It is emphasized that large narrowing of the HOMO-LUMO energy gap is achieved just by forming the hypervalent bond. In addition, the narrow-energy-gap property can be enhanced by extension of π-conjugation. The obtained π-conjugated polymer shows efficient NIR emission both in solution (λPL =770 nm and ΦPL =0.10) and film (λPL =807 nm and ΦPL =0.04). These results suggest that collaboration of a hypervalent bond and a π-conjugated system is a novel and effective strategy for tuning electronic properties even in the NIR region.

Abstract
A linear-shaped small organic molecule (E)-4-(5-(3,5-dimethoxy-styryl)thiophen-2-yl)-7-(5″-hexyl-[2,2':5',2″-terthiophen]-5-yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (MBTR) comprising a benzothiadiazole (BTD) acceptor linked with the terminal donors bithiophene and dimethoxy vinylbenzene through a π-bridge thiophene was synthesized and analyzed. The MBTR efficiently tuned the thermal, absorption, and emission characteristics to enhance the molecular packing and aggregation behaviors in the solid state. The obtained optical bandgap of 1.86 eV and low-lying highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) level of -5.42 eV efficiently lowered the energy losses in the fabricated devices, thereby achieving enhanced photovoltaic performances. The optimized MBTR:PC71BM (1:2.5 w/w%) fullerene-based devices showed a maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7.05%, with an open-circuit voltage (VOC) of 0.943 V, short-circuit current density (JSC) of 12.63 mA/cm2, and fill factor (FF) of 59.2%. With the addition of 3% 1,8-diiodooctane (DIO), the PCE improved to 8.76% with a high VOC of 1.02 V, JSC of 13.78 mA/cm2, and FF of 62.3%, which are associated with improved charge transport at the donor/acceptor interfaces owing to the fibrous active layer morphology and favorable phase separation. These results demonstrate that the introduction of suitable donor/acceptor groups in molecular design and device engineering is an effective approach to enhancing the photovoltaic performances of organic solar cells.

Abstract
Large-fused-ring-based conjugated polymers possess wide application prospects in optoelectronic devices due to their high charge transport and wide optical absorption. In this paper, three low-bandgap donor-acceptor (D-A) type polymers PBIT-X (X = 1, 2, 3) based on alkylated benzodithiophene and tris(thienothiophene) as donors and thiadiazol-quinoxaline as an acceptor were synthesized via Stille coupling polymerization at different (donor/acceptor) D/A molar feed ratios. The band gaps of PBIT-1, PBIT-2, PBIT-3 were 1.10 eV, 1.04 eV and 1.02 eV, respectively. Spectroelectrochemistry studies showed that the three D-A type polymers have dual bands located in visible and near-infrared regions in the neutral state. The three D-A type polymers possess good electrochromic properties, such as an optical contrast of 56% and response time of 0.3 s. In particular, PBIT-3 could achieve three color changes from magenta to yellowish green to cyan during the oxidation process. The results indicate that these D-A type conjugated polymers based on large fused-ring units exhibit multiple color changes, endowing them with huge potential applications in visible and near-infrared electrochromic devices.

Abstract
Three nonfused ring electron acceptors, Hexyl-0F, Isopropyl-0F, and Isopropyl-2F, are designed and synthesized. Unlike Hexyl-0F, Isopropyl-0F with two sterically hindered 2,4,6-triisopropyl-phenyl groups is highly soluble, which provides a good opportunity for solution processability. Compared with Isopropyl-0F, Isopropyl-2F with fluorinated end-groups exhibits red-shifted absorption. Due to these synergistic adjustment, Isopropyl-2F-based devices displayed a high power conversion efficiency of 12.55%, higher than that of Isopropyl-0F (9.49%). The result demonstrates that the introduction of large steric substituents in the π-bridge units and electron-withdrawing end-groups plays a positive role in the construction of high-efficiency nonfused ring electron acceptors.

Abstract
A two-dimensional electron-rich fused-ring moiety (ClBDSe) based on benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']diselenophene is synthesized. Three copolymers (PBDT-Se, PBDSe-T, and PBDSe-Se) are obtained by manipulating the connection types and number of selenophene units on the conjugated main chains with two 2D fused-ring units and two different π-bridges, respectively. In comparison with PBDT-Se and PBDSe-Se, PBDSe-T with benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']diselenophene unit and thiophene π-bridge exhibits the deepest HOMO energy level and the strongest crystallinity in neat films. The PBDSe-T:Y6 blend film exhibits the best absorption complementarity, the most distinctive face-on orientation with proper phase separation, the highest carrier mobilities, and the lowest charge recombination among three blend films. Finally, the PBDSe-T:Y6-based device delivers an impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.50 %, which is higher than those of PBDT-Se:Y6 and PBDSe-Se:Y6. Moreover, a decent open-circuit voltage (Voc ) of 0.89 V with a remarkably small energy loss of 0.44 eV is achieved for PBDSe-T:Y6. The efficiency of 14.50 % is the highest value for selenophene-containing copolymer-based binary organic solar cells (OSCs). This study provides evidence that introduction of 2D-benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']diselenophene as a fused electron-rich unit with π-bridging into copolymeric donors is a valid strategy for providing high Voc and excellent PCE simultaneously in selenophene-based OSCs.

Abstract
A new electron-rich spirothienoquinoline unit, tBuSAF-Th, has been developed via incorporation of a thienyl unit instead of a phenyl unit into the six-membered ring of the spiroacridine (SAF) and utilized for the first time as a building block for constructing small-molecule electron donors in organic solar cells (OSCs) and as active layers in organic resistive memory devices. The resulting three-dimensional spirothienoquinoline-containing 1-4 exhibit high-lying highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy levels. By the introduction of electron-deficient benzochalcogenodiazole linkers, with the chalcogen atoms being varied from O to S and Se, a progressively lower lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy level has been achieved while keeping the HOMO energy levels similar. This strategy has allowed an enhanced light-harvesting ability without compromising open-circuit voltage (Voc) in vacuum-deposited bulk heterojunction OSCs using 1-4 as donors and C70 as the acceptor. Good photovoltaic performances with power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of up to 3.86% and high short-circuit current densities (Jsc) of up to 10.84 mA cm-2 have been achieved. In addition, organic resistive memory devices fabricated with these donor-acceptor small molecules exhibit binary logic memory behaviors with long retention times and high on/off current ratios. This work indicates that the spirothienoquinoline moiety is a potential building block for constructing multifunctional organic electronic materials.

Abstract
Large energy loss is one of the key factors that limit the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs). In this work, we report reduced energy losses of OSCs via introducing thiazole π-spacers with different orientations to replace the thiophene π-spacers of the prototype polymer PBDB-T. The newly formed thiazole-containing isomeric polymers, PBDBTz-2 and PBDBTz-5, exhibited blue-shifted absorption and deeper lying energy levels compared to PBDB-T. When blended with IT-4F, the two polymers realized PCEs of 10.4% for PBDBTz-2 and 9.6% for PBDBTz-5, respectively, which were higher than that of PBDB-T (PCE = 9.3%). More critically, considerable open-circuit voltage (Voc) enhancements were achieved by PBDBTz-2 and PBDBTz-5, which were 0.14 and 0.21 V higher than that of PBDB-T. A detailed analysis showed that the reduced energy loss resulted from the lower radiative recombination below the band gap and nonradiative recombination loss. This study demonstrated that the introduction of thiazole π-spacers with different orientations is effective to reduce the energy losses of OSCs, which provided valuable inspirations for the development of new conjugated polymers to the efficiency breakthrough of OSCs in future.

Abstract
We report three n-type polymeric electron acceptors (PFPDI-TT, PFPDI-T, and PFPDI-Se) based on the fused perylene diimide (FPDI) and thieno[3,2- b]thiophene, thiophene, or selenophene units for all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs). These FPDI-based polymer acceptors exhibit strong absorption between 350 and 650 nm with wide optical bandgap of 1.86-1.91 eV, showing good absorption compensation with the narrow bandgap polymer donor. The lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels were located at around -4.11 eV, which are comparable with those of the fullerene derivatives and other small molecular electron acceptors. The conventional all-PSCs based on the three polymer acceptors and PTB7-Th as polymer donor gave remarkable power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of >6%, and the PFPDI-Se-based all-PSC achieved the highest PCE of 6.58% with a short-circuit current density ( Jsc) of 13.96 mA/cm2, an open-circuit voltage ( Voc) of 0.76 V, and a fill factor (FF) of 62.0%. More interestingly, our results indicate that the photovoltaic performances of the FPDI-based polymer acceptors are mainly determined by the FPDI unit with a small effect from the comonomers, which is quite different from the others reported rylenediimide-based polymer acceptors. This intriguing phenomenon is speculated as the huge geometry configuration of the FPDI unit, which minimizes the effect of the comonomer. These results highlight a promising future for the application of the FPDI-based polymer acceptors in the highly efficient all-PSCs.

Abstract
A pair of linear tetrafluorinated small molecular donors, named as ThIDTTh4F and ThIDTSe4F, which are with tetrathienyl-substituted IDT as electron-rich central core, electron-deficient difluorobenzothiadiazole as acceptor units, and donor end-capping groups, but having differences in the π-bridge (thiophene and selenophene), were successfully synthesized and evaluated as donor materials in organic solar cells. Such π-bridge and core units in these small molecules play a decisive role in the formation of the nanoscale separation of the blend films, which were systematically investigated through absorption spectra, grazing incidence X-ray diffraction pattern, transmission electron microscopy images, resonant soft X-ray scattering profiles, and charge mobility measurement. The ThIDTSe4F (with selenophene π-bridge)-based device exhibited superior performance than devices based on ThIDTh4F (with thiophene π-bridge) after post annealing treatment owing to optimized film morphology and improved charge transport. Power conversion efficiency of 7.31% and fill factor of ∼0.70 were obtained by using a blend of ThIDTSe4F and PC71BM with thermal annealing and solvent vapor annealing treatments, which is the highest PCE from aromatic side-chain substituted IDT-based small molecular solar cells. The scope of this study is to reveal the structure-property relationship of the aromatic side-chain substituted IDT-based donor materials as a function of π-bridge and the post annealing conditions.

Abstract
In this study, we enhanced the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskite solar cells by employing an electron transfer layer (ETL) comprising [6,6]phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) and, to optimize its morphology, a small amount of the block copolymer polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO), positioned on the perovskite active layer. When incorporating 0.375 wt % PS-b-PEO into PC61BM, the PCE of the perovskite photovoltaic device increased from 9.4% to 13.4%, a relative increase of 43%, because of a large enhancement in the fill factor of the device. To decipher the intricate morphology of the ETL, we used synchrotron grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering for determining the PC61BM cluster size, atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy for probing the surface, and transmission electron microscopy for observing the aggregation of PC61BM in the ETL. We found that the interaction between PS-b-PEO and PC61BM resulted in smaller PC61BM clusters that further aggregated into dendritic structures in some domains, a result of the similar polarities of the PS block and PC61BM; this behavior could be used to tune the morphology of the ETL. The optimal PS-b-PEO-mediated PC61BM cluster size in the ETL was 17 nm, a large reduction from 59 nm for the pristine PC61BM layer. This approach of incorporating a small amount of nanostructured block copolymer into a fullerene allowed us to effectively tune the morphology of the ETL on the perovskite active layer and resulted in enhanced fill factors of the devices and thus their device efficiency.

Abstract
This study explores the effect of substitution of selenium (Se) for sulfur (S) on the photophysical properties of a series of π-conjugated donor-acceptor-donor chromophores based on 4,7-bis(2-thienyl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (TBT). The effect of Se substitution is studied systematically, where the substitution is in the thiophene donors only, the benzothiadiazole acceptor only, and in all of the positions. The fluorescence quantum yield decreases with an increase in Se substitution. Nanosecond-microsecond transient absorption and singlet oxygen sensitization experiments show that the effect of Se is due to an increase in the rate and efficiency of intersystem crossing with increased Se substitution. The relationship between intersystem crossing efficiency and heteroatom substitution pattern shows that the effects are largest when the heavy atom Se is in the acceptor benzothiadiazole unit. DFT calculations support the hypothesis that the effect arises because the LUMO is concentrated in the acceptor moiety, enhancing the spin-orbit coupling effect imparted by the Se atom.
