Regioregular Organoborane-Functionalized Poly(3-alkynylthiophene)s

Facile synthesis of diiodoheteroindenes and understanding their Sonogashira cross-coupling selectivity for the construction of unsymmetrical enediynes

Electrophile-promoted cyclizations of functionalized alkynes offer a useful tool for constructing halogen-substituted heterocycles primed for further derivatization. Preinstallation of an iodo-substituent at the alkyne prior to iodo-cyclization opens access to ortho di-iodinated heterocyclic precursors for the preparation of unsymmetrical heterocycle-fused enediynes. This general approach was used to prepare 2,3-diiodobenzothiophene, 2,3-diiodoindole, and 2,3-diiodobenzofuran, a useful family of substrates for systematic studies of the role of heteroatoms on the regioselectivity of cross-coupling reactions. Diiodobenzothiophene showed much higher regioselectivity for Sonogashira cross-coupling at C2 than diiodoindole and diiodobenzofuran. As a result, benzothiophene can be conveniently involved in a one-pot sequential coupling with two different alkynes, yielding unsymmetrical benzothiophene-fused enediynes. On the other hand, the Sonogashira reaction of diiodoindole and diiodobenzofuran formed considerable amounts of di-substituted enediynes in addition to the monoalkyne product by coupling at C2. Interestingly, no C3-monocoupling products were observed for all of the diiodides, suggesting that the incorporation of the 1st alkyne at C2 activates the C3 position for the 2nd coupling. Additional factors affecting regioselectivity were detected, discussed and connected, through computational analysis, to transmetalation being the rate-determining step for the Sonogashira reaction. Several enediynes synthesized showed cytotoxic activity, which is not associated with DNA strand breaks typical of natural enediyne antibiotics.

Recent Advances and Challenges in Barbier Polymerization

The Barbier reaction, a classical name reaction for carbon-carbon bond formation, has played important roles in organic chemistry for over 120 years. The introduction of the Barbier reaction into polymer chemistry for the development of a novel Barbier polymerization, expands the methodology, monomer, chemical structure and property libraries of polymerization, aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and non-traditional intrinsic luminescence (NTIL). This mini review focuses on Barbier polymerization, including the brief introduction of the history and importance of polymerization methods design and the achievements of Barbier polymerization from molecular design strategies, functionalities and properties. An outlook of Barbier polymerization is also proposed. This mini review on Barbier polymerization therefore may cause inspirations to scientists in different fields.

Synthesis and Structure-Property Relationships in Regioisomeric Alternating Borane-Terthiophene Polymers

Main-chain boron-containing π-conjugated polymers are attractive for organic electronic, sensing, and imaging applications. Alternating terthiophene-borane polymers were prepared and the effects of regioisomeric attachment of the conjugated linker and variations in the electronic effect of the pendent aryl groups (2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenyl, Mes*; 2,4,6-tris(trifluoromethyl)phenyl, FMes) examined. Pd₂ dba₃ /P(t-Bu)₃ -catalyzed Stille polymerization of arylbis(2-thienyl)borane and arylbis(3-thienylborane) with 2,5-bis(trimethylstannyl)thiophene at 120 °C gave polymers with appreciable molecular weight but MALDI-TOF MS analyses showed evidence of unusually prominent homocoupling. These defects could be suppressed by using brominated rather than iodinated monomers, more hindered 2,5-bis(tri-n-butylstannyl)thiophene as comonomer, and Pd₂ dba₃ /P(o-tol)₃ as the catalyst at 100 °C. Under these conditions, macrocyclic species with n=3-10 repeating units formed preferentially according to MALDI-TOF MS analyses. Photophysical studies revealed a prominent effect of the regiochemistry and the nature of the pendent aryl groups on the absorption and emission, giving rise to orange, yellow-green, blue-green, and blue emissive materials respectively. The electronic effects were rationalized through DFT calculations on bis(terthiophene) model systems.

Redox-Active Heteroatom-Functionalized Polyacetylenes

The discovery of metallic conductivity in polyacetylene [-HC=CH-]_n upon doping represents a landmark achievement. However, the insolubility of polyacetylene and a dearth of methods for its chemical modification have limited its widespread use. Here, we employ a ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) protocol to prepare functionalized polyacetylenes (fPAs) bearing: (1) electron-deficient boryl (-BR₂ ) and phosphoryl (-P(O)R₂ ) side chains; (2) electron-donating amino (-NR₂ ) groups, and (3) ring-fused 1,2,3-triazolium units via strain-promoted Click chemistry. These functional groups render most of the fPAs soluble and can lead to intense light absorption across the visible to near-IR region. Also, the presence of redox-active boryl and amino groups leads to opposing near-IR optical responses upon (electro)chemical reduction or oxidation. Some of the resulting fPAs show greatly enhanced air stability when compared to known polyacetylenes. Lastly, these fPAs can be cross-linked to yield network materials with the full retention of optical properties.

π-Conjugated Materials Derived From Boron-Chalcogenophene Combination. A Brief Description of Synthetic Routes and Optoelectronic Applications

Functional materials composed of Boron-chalcogenophene conjugates have emerged as promising ensemble featuring commendable optoelectronic properties. This review describes the categories, synthetic routes and optoelectronic applications of a range of boron-chalcogenophene conjugates. Conjugation and linking of different types of tri- and tetra-coordinated boron moieties with chalcogenophenes have remained an important strategy for constructing a range of functional materials. Synthetic protocols have been devised to efficiently prepare such chemically robust conjugates, often exhibiting a myriad of photophysical properties, redox capabilities and also solid-state behaviors. Tin-boron and silicon-boron exchange protocols have been efficiently adapted to access these boron-chalcogenophenes. Few other commonly used methods namely, hydroboration of alkynes as well as electrophilic borylations are also mentioned. The chemical and electronic properties of such boron-chalcogenophene conjugates are directly influenced by the strong Lewis acid character of trivalent boranes which can further alter the intra- and inter- molecular Lewis acid-base interactions. Apart from the synthetic protocols, recent advances in the application of these boron-chalcogenophene conjugates towards analyte sensing, organic electronics, molecular switches and several other aspects will be discussed in this review.

Barbier Self-Condensing Ketyl Polymerization-Induced Emission: A Polarity Reversal Approach to Reversed Polymerizability

Carbon-carbon bond formation through polarity reversal ketyl radical anion coupling of carbonyls has inspired new reaction modes to this cornerstone carbonyl group and played significant roles in organic chemistry. The introduction of this resplendent polarity reversal ketyl strategy into polymer chemistry will inspire new polymerization mode with unpredicted discoveries. Here we show the successful introduction of polarity reversal ketyl approach to polymer chemistry to realize self-condensing ketyl polymerization with polymerization-induced emission. In this polarity reversal approach, it exhibits intriguing reversed polymerizability, where traditional excellent leaving groups are not suitable for polymerization but challenging polymerizations involving the cleavage of challenging C-F and C-CF3 bonds are realized under mild Barbier conditions. This polarity reversal approach enables the polymer chemistry with polarity reversal ketyl mode, opens up a new avenue toward the polymerization of challenging C-X bonds under mild conditions, and sparks design inspiration of new reaction, polymerization, and functional polymer.

The Introduction of the Radical Cascade Reaction into Polymer Chemistry: A One-Step Strategy for Synchronized Polymerization and Modification

Polymerization and modification play central roles in polymer chemistry and are generally implemented in two steps, which suffer from the time-consuming two-step strategy and present considerable challenge for complete modification. By introducing the radical cascade reaction (RCR) into polymer chemistry, a one-step strategy is demonstrated to achieve synchronized polymerization and complete modification in situ. Attributed to the cascade feature of iron-catalyzed three-component alkene carboazidation RCR exhibiting carbon-carbon bond formation and carbon-azide bond formation with extremely high efficiency and selectivity in one step, radical cascade polymerization therefore enables the in situ synchronized polymerization through continuous carbon-carbon bond formation and complete modification through carbon-azide bond formation simultaneously. This results in a series of α, β, and γ poly(amino acid) precursors. This result not only expands the methodology library of polymerization, but also the possibility for polymer science to achieve functional polymers with tailored chemical functionality from in situ polymerization.

The introduction of the Barbier reaction into polymer chemistry

The Barbier reaction, a widely utilized reaction for carbon-carbon bond formation, has played important roles in modern organic chemistry for more than a century. Here, we show its successful introduction to polymer chemistry. Through one-pot Barbier polyaddition (both A₂+B₂ type and AB type) of monomers containing an organic halide and a benzoyl group, a series of phenylmethanol group containing polymers, including polymonophenylmethanol (PMPM), polydiphenylmethanol (PDPM), and polytriphenylmethanol (PTPM), have been synthesized. Para-PTPM exhibits interesting aggregation-induced emission, tunable thermo-responsive over a wide temperature range, sensory, luminescence enhancement of fluorescent dye in solid-state and processing properties. This significantly expands the libraries of monomer and polymer, and opens up an avenue for the design and application of functional polymer materials.

Thiophene-Based Organic Semiconductors

Thiophene-based π-conjugated organic small molecules and polymers are the research subject of significant current interest owing to their potential use as organic semiconductors in material chemistry. Despite simple and similar molecular structures, the hitherto reported properties of thiophene-based organic semiconductors are rather diverse. Design of high performance organic semiconducting materials requires a thorough understanding of inter- and intra-molecular interactions, solid-state packing, and the influence of both factors on the charge carrier transport. In this chapter, thiophene-based organic semiconductors, which are classified in terms of their chemical structures and their structure-property relationships, are addressed for the potential applications as organic photovoltaics (OPVs), organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) and organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs).

Organoboron copolymers containing thienothiophene and selenophenothiophene analogues: optical, electrochemical and fluoride sensing properties

Conjugated D–A copolymers of SeT/TT and mesitylboron were synthesized. Large Stokes shifts of 96–166 nm and solution quantum yields of 5–18% were recorded. High fluoride sensing property was observed for the polymer having cross-conjugated-TT units.

Incorporation of polycyclic azaborine compounds into polythiophene-type conjugated polymers for organic field-effect transistors

A thiophene-fused polycyclic azaborine skeleton was employed into conjugated polymers for organic field-effect transistors for the first time. Two polythiophene-type polymers were developed, which exhibited low HOMO levels and strong intermolecular interactions, leading to a hole mobility of up to 0.38 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1).

Pyridyl Directed Catalyst-Free trans-Hydroboration of Internal Alkynes

We report the first examples of straightforward trans-hydroboration of internal alkynes at room temperature with 9-BBN, producing five-membered BN-heterocycles. Contrary to conventional cis-hydroboration, we demonstrate that the introduction of a pyridyl group switches the stereoselectivity of the reaction. A hydride migration mechanism has been proposed and supported by DFT calculations for the trans-hydroboration. This new hydroboration approach allows facile construction of new blue fluorescent BN-heterocyclic compounds.

New AIE-active pyrimidine-based boronfluoride complexes with high solid-state emission and reversible mechanochromism luminescence behavior

New BF₂ complexes (PB-1–4) exhibiting intense fluorescence in their solid-state were developed. PB-4 exhibits a reversible mechanochromic response to grinding, and a distinct red-shift of emission is observed.

Regioregular synthesis of azaborine oligomers and a polymer with a syn conformation stabilized by N-H⋅⋅⋅π interactions

The regioregular synthesis of the first azaborine oligomers and a corresponding conjugated polymer was accomplished by Suzuki-Miyaura coupling methods. An almost perfectly coplanar syn arrangement of the heterocycles was deduced from an X-ray crystal structure of the dimer, which also suggested that NH⋅⋅⋅π interactions play an important role. Computational studies further supported these experimental observations and indicated that the electronic structure of the longer azaborine oligomers and polymer resembles that of poly(cyclohexadiene) more than poly(p-phenylene). A comparison of the absorption and emission properties of the polymer with those of the oligomers revealed dramatic bathochromic shifts upon chain elongation, thus suggesting highly effective extension of conjugation.

Luminescent Quadrupolar Borazine Oligomers: Synthesis, Photophysics, and Two-Photon Absorption Properties

A set of monodisperse bent donor-acceptor-donor-type conjugated borazine oligomers, BnNn+1 (n=1-4), incorporating electron-rich triarylamine donor and electron-deficient triarylborane acceptor units has been prepared through an iterative synthetic approach that takes advantage of highly selective silicon-boron and tin-boron exchange reactions. The effect of chain elongation on the electrochemical, one- and two-photon properties and excited-state photodynamics has been investigated. Strong intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) from the arylamine donors to boryl-centered acceptor sites results in emissions with high quantum yields (Φfl >0.5) in the range of 400-500 nm. Solvatochromic effects lead to solvent shifts as large as ∼70 nm for the shortest member (n=1) and gradually decrease with chain elongation. The oligomers exhibit strong two-photon absorption (2PA) in the visible spectral region with 2PA cross sections as large as 1410 GM (n=4), and broadband excited-state absorption (ESA) attributed to long-lived singlet-singlet and radical cation/anion absorption. The excited-state dynamics also show sensitivity to the solvent environment. Electrochemical observations and DFT calculations (B3LYP/6-31G*) reveal spatially separated HOMO and LUMO levels resulting in highly fluorescent oligomers with strong ICT character. The BnNn+1 oligomers have been used to demonstrate the detection of cyanide anions with association constants of log K>7.

Thermo-responsive behavior of borinic acid polymers: experimental and molecular dynamics studies

The thermo-responsive properties of borinic acid polymers were investigated by experimental and molecular dynamics simulation studies. The homopolymer poly(styrylphenyl(tri-iso-propylphenyl)borinic acid) (PBA) exhibits an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) in polar organic solvents that is tunable over a wide temperature range by addition of small amounts of H2O. The UCST of a 1 mg mL(-1) PBA solution in DMSO can be adjusted from 20 to 100 °C by varying the H2O content from ∼0-2.5%, in DMF from 0 to 100 °C (∼3-17% H2O content), and in THF from 0 to 60 °C (∼4-19% H2O). The UCST increases almost linearly from the freezing point of the solvent with higher freezing point to the boiling point of the solvent with the lower boiling point. The mechanistic aspects of this process were investigated by molecular dynamics simulations. The latter indicate rapid and strong hydrogen-bond formation between BOH moieties and H2O molecules, which serve as crosslinkers to form an insoluble network. Our results suggest that borinic acid-containing polymers are promising as new "smart" materials, which display thermo-responsive properties that are tunable over a wide temperature range.
