Abstract
Nano/micromotors hold immense potential for revolutionizing drug delivery and detection systems, especially in the realm of cancer diagnosis and treatment, owing to their distinctive features, including precise propulsion, maneuverability, and meticulously designed surface modifications. In this study, we explore the capabilities of modified and magnetically driven micromotors as active drug delivery systems within 2D and 3D cell culture environments and cancer diagnosis. We synthesized gold (Au) and iron-nickel (Fe-Ni) metallic-based magnetic micromotors (Au:Fe-Ni MMs) through electrochemical methods, equipping them with functionalities for controlled doxorubicin (DOX) release and cancer cell recognition. In 2D and spheroids of MCF-7 adenocarcinoma cells, the Au segment of these micromotors was utilized to help DOX loading through poly(sodium-4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) functionalization, and the attachment of antiHER2 antibodies for specific recognition. This innovative approach enabled controlled drug release within the cancerous microenvironment, coupled with magnetic (Fe-Ni) propulsion for biocompatible drug delivery to MCF-7 cells. Furthermore, antiHER2 immobilized Au:Fe-Ni MMs effectively interacted with receptors, capitalizing on the overexpression of HER2 antigens on MCF-7 cells. Encouraging outcomes were observed, particularly in spheroid models, underscoring the remarkable potential of these multifunctional micromotors for advancing intelligent drug delivery methodologies and diagnostic purposes.

Abstract
The analysis and detection of snake venom toxins are a matter of great importance in clinical diagnosis for fast treatment and the discovery of new pharmaceutical products. Current detection methods have high associated costs and require the use of sophisticated bioreceptors, which in some cases are difficult to obtain. Herein, we report the synthesis of template-based molecularly imprinted micromotors for dynamic detection of α-bungarotoxin as a model toxin present in the venom of many-banded krait (Bungarus multicinctus). The specific recognition sites are built-in in the micromotors by incubation of the membrane template with the target toxin, followed by a controlled electrodeposition of a poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) polymeric layer, a magnetic Ni layer to promote magnetic guidance and facilitate washing steps, and a Pt layer for autonomous propulsion in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. The enhanced fluid mixing and autonomous propulsion increase the likelihood of interactions with the target analyte as compared with static counterparts, retaining the tetramethylrhodamine-labeled α-bungarotoxin on the micromotor surface with extremely fast dynamic sensor response (after just 20 s navigation) in only 3 μL of water, urine, or serum samples. The sensitivity achieved meets the clinically relevant concentration postsnakebite (from 0.1 to 100 μg/mL), illustrating the feasibility of the approach for practical applications. The selectivity of the protocol is very high, as illustrated by the absence of fluorescence in the micromotor surface in the presence of α-cobratoxin as a representative toxin with a size and structure similar to those of α-bungarotoxin. Recoveries higher than 95% are obtained in the analysis of urine- and serum-fortified samples. The new strategy holds considerable promise for fast, inexpensive, and even onsite detection of several toxins using multiple molecularly imprinted micromotors with tailored recognition abilities.

Abstract
Micromotor (MM) technology offers a valuable and smart on-the-move biosensing microscale approach in clinical settings where sample availability is scarce in the case of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Soluble amyloid-β protein oligomers (AβO) (mainly AβO42) that circulate in biological fluids have been recognized as a molecular biomarker and therapeutic target of AD due to their high toxicity, and they are correlated much more strongly with AD compared to the insoluble Aβ monomers. A graphene oxide (GO)-gold nanoparticles (AuNPs)/nickel (Ni)/platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) micromotors (MMGO-AuNPs)-based electrochemical label-free aptassay is proposed for sensitive, accurate, and rapid determination of AβO42 in complex clinical samples such as brain tissue, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and plasma from AD patients. An approach that implies the in situ formation of AuNPs on the GO external layer of tubular MM in only one step during MM electrosynthesis was performed (MMGO-AuNPs). The AβO42 specific thiolated-aptamer (AptAβO42) was immobilized in the MMGO-AuNPs via Au-S interaction, allowing for the selective recognition of the AβO42 (MMGO-AuNPs-AptAβO42-AβO42). AuNPs were smartly used not only to covalently bind a specific thiolated-aptamer for the design of a label-free electrochemical aptassay but also to improve the final MM propulsion performance due to their catalytic activity (approximately 2.0× speed). This on-the-move bioplatform provided a fast (5 min), selective, precise (RSD < 8%), and accurate quantification of AβO42 (recoveries 94-102%) with excellent sensitivity (LOD = 0.10 pg mL-1) and wide linear range (0.5-500 pg mL-1) in ultralow volumes of the clinical sample of AD patients (5 μL), without any dilution. Remarkably, our MM-based bioplatform demonstrated the competitiveness for the determination of AβO42 in the target samples against the dot blot analysis, which requires more than 14 h to provide qualitative results only. It is also important to highlight its applicability to the potential analysis of liquid biopsies as plasma and CSF samples, improving the reliability of the diagnosis given the heterogeneity and temporal complexity of neurodegenerative diseases. The excellent results obtained demonstrate the analytical potency of our approach as a future tool for clinical/POCT (Point-of-care testing) routine scenarios.

Abstract
Untethered micro/nanorobots that can wirelessly control their motion and deformation state have gained enormous interest in remote sensing applications due to their unique motion characteristics in various media and diverse functionalities. Researchers are developing micro/nanorobots as innovative tools to improve sensing performance and miniaturize sensing systems, enabling in situ detection of substances that traditional sensing methods struggle to achieve. Over the past decade of development, significant research progress has been made in designing sensing strategies based on micro/nanorobots, employing various coordinated control and sensing approaches. This review summarizes the latest developments on micro/nanorobots for remote sensing applications by utilizing the self-generated signals of the robots, robot behavior, microrobotic manipulation, and robot-environment interactions. Providing recent studies and relevant applications in remote sensing, we also discuss the challenges and future perspectives facing micro/nanorobots-based intelligent sensing platforms to achieve sensing in complex environments, translating lab research achievements into widespread real applications.

Abstract
Phycocyanin, a macromolecular protein known for its robust fluorescence, proves to be highly suitable for verifying the successful deposition of imprinted layers. In this study, an acid-propelled magnetic micromotor was successfully fabricated by utilizing surface imprinting and self-propelled nanomotor technology to achieve selective loading and capture of targets such as phycocyanin for future applications in environmental monitoring and precision drug delivery in vivo. This micromotor features a distinct recognition layer achieved through a template electrodeposition method. The outermost imprint layer of the micromotor was meticulously crafted using poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/poly(sodium-4-styrenesulfonate) in the presence of a template, while the Pt layer serves as the supportive foundation, the Ni layer acts as the magnetic guidance component, and the innermost layer consists of metal Zn. In acidic environments, the Zn reacts to generate bubbles, which propels the micromotor's motion. The micromotor was comprehensively characterized using techniques such as scanning electron microscopy. Findings highlight the exceptional self-propulsion of the Zn-based micromotor, which is a fusion of molecular imprinting and micromotor technologies. This innovative design achieves an impressive maximum velocity of approximately 100 μm s-1, as well as commendable magnetic steering performance. Furthermore, the micromotor demonstrates the ability to imprint target protein through the imprint layer, enabling selective recognition and capture for transport of specific phycocyanin. In vitro cytotoxicity tests have also demonstrated that the micromotors are non-toxic to cells. This breakthrough concept offers a novel avenue for realizing targeted capture and transport of specific nutrients within the human gastric environment.

Abstract
To meet the increasing needs of point-of-care testing in clinical diagnosis and daily health monitoring, numerous cutting-edge techniques have emerged to upgrade current portable biosensors with higher sensitivity, smaller size, and better intelligence. In particular, due to the controlled locomotion characteristics in the micro/nano scale, microrobots can effectively enhance the sensitivity of biosensors by disrupting conventional passive diffusion into an active enrichment during the test. In addition, microrobots are ideal to create biosensors with functions of on-demand delivery, transportation, and multi-objective detections with the capability of actively controlled motion. In this review, five types of portable biosensors and their integration with microrobots are critically introduced. Microrobots can enhance the detection signal in fluorescence intensity and surface-enhanced Raman scattering detection via the active enrichment. The existence and quantity of detection substances also affect the motion state of microrobots for the locomotion-based detection. In addition, microrobots realize the indirect detection of the bio-molecules by functionalizing their surfaces in the electrochemical current and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy detections. We pay a special focus on the roles of microrobots with active locomotion to enhance the detection performance of portable sensors. At last, perspectives and future trends of microrobots in biosensing are also discussed.

Abstract
Autonomously self-propelled nanoswimmers represent the next-generation nano-devices for bio- and environmental technology. However, current nanoswimmers generate limited energy output and can only move in short distances and duration, thus are struggling to be applied in practical challenges, such as living cell transportation. Here, we describe the construction of biodegradable metal-organic framework based nanobots with chemically driven buoyancy to achieve highly efficient, long-distance, directional vertical motion to "find-and-fetch" target cells. Nanobots surface-functionalized with antibodies against the cell surface marker carcinoembryonic antigen are exploited to impart the nanobots with specific cell targeting capacity to recognize and separate cancer cells. We demonstrate that the self-propelled motility of the nanobots can sufficiently transport the recognized cells autonomously, and the separated cells can be easily collected with a customized glass column, and finally regain their full metabolic potential after the separation. The utilization of nanobots with easy synthetic pathway shows considerable promise in cell recognition, separation, and enrichment.

Abstract
Micro/nanobots are integrated devices developed from engineered nanomaterials that have evolved significantly over the past decades. They can potentially be pre-programmed to operate robustly at numerous hard-to-reach organ/tissues/cellular sites for multiple bioengineering applications such as early disease diagnosis, precision surgeries, targeted drug delivery, cancer therapeutics, bio-imaging, biomolecules isolation, detoxification, bio-sensing, and clearing up clogged arteries with high soaring effectiveness and minimal exhaustion of power. Several techniques have been introduced in recent years to develop programmable, biocompatible, and energy-efficient micro/nanobots. Therefore, the primary focus of most of these techniques is to develop hybrid micro/nanobots that are an optimized combination of purely synthetic or biodegradable bots suitable for the execution of user-defined tasks more precisely and efficiently. Recent progress has been illustrated here as an overview of a few of the achievable construction principles to be used to make biomedical micro/nanobots and explores the pivotal ventures of nanotechnology-moderated development of catalytic autonomous bots. Furthermore, it is also foregrounding their advancement offering an insight into the recent trends and subsequent prospects, opportunities, and challenges involved in the accomplishments of the effective multifarious bioengineering applications.

Abstract
The field of micro-/nanorobotics has attracted extensive interest from a variety of research communities and witnessed enormous progress in a broad array of applications ranging from basic research to global healthcare and to environmental remediation and protection. In particular, micro-/nanoscale robots provide an enabling platform for the development of next-generation chemical and biological sensing modalities, owing to their unique advantages as programmable, self-sustainable, and/or autonomous mobile carriers to accommodate and promote physical and chemical processes. In this review, we intend to provide an overview of the state-of-the-art development in this area and share our perspective in the future trend. This review starts with a general introduction of micro-/nanorobotics and the commonly used methods for propulsion of micro-/nanorobots in solution, along with the commonly used methods in their fabrication. Next, we comprehensively summarize the current status of the micro/nanorobotic research in relevance to chemical and biological sensing (e.g., motion-based sensing, optical sensing, and electrochemical sensing). Following that, we provide an overview of the primary challenges currently faced in the micro-/nanorobotic research. Finally, we conclude this review by providing our perspective detailing the future application of soft robotics in chemical and biological sensing.

Abstract
Self-propelled micro/nanomotors are emergent intelligent sensors for analyzing extracellular biomarkers in circulating biological fluids. Conventional luminescent motors are often masked by a highly dynamic and scattered environment, creating challenges to characterize biomarkers or subtle binding dynamics. Here we introduce a strategy to amplify subtle signals by coupling strong light-matter interactions on micromotors. A smart whispering-gallery-mode microlaser that can self-propel and analyze extracellular biomarkers is demonstrated through a liquid crystal microdroplet. Lasing spectral responses induced by cavity energy transfer were employed to reflect the abundance of protein biomarkers, generating exclusive molecular labels for cellular profiling of exosomes derived from 3D multicellular cancer spheroids. Finally, a microfluidic biosystem with different tumor-derived exosomes was employed to elaborate its sensing capability in complex environments. The proposed autonomous microlaser exhibits a promising method for both fundamental biological science and applications in drug screening, phenotyping, and organ-on-chip applications.

Abstract
Bovine mastitis produced by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) causes major problems in milk production due to the staphylococcal enterotoxins produced by this bacterium. These enterotoxins are stable and cannot be eradicated easily by common hygienic procedures once they are formed in dairy products. Here, magnetic microrobots (MagRobots) are developed based on paramagnetic hybrid microstructures loaded with IgG from rabbit serum that can bind and isolate S. aureus from milk in a concentration of 3.42 104 CFU g-1 (allowable minimum level established by the United States Food and Drug Administration, FDA). Protein A, which is present on the cell wall of S. aureus, selectively binds IgG from rabbit serum and loads the bacteria onto the surface of the MagRobots. The selective isolation of S. aureus is confirmed using a mixed suspension of S. aureus and Escherichia coli (E. coli). Moreover, this fuel-free system based on magnetic robots does not affect the natural milk microbiota or add any toxic compound resulting from fuel catalysis. This system can be used to isolate and transport efficiently S. aureus and discriminate it from nontarget bacteria for subsequent identification. Finally, this system can be scaled up for industrial use in food production.

Abstract
Controllable design of the nanocrystal-assembled plasmonic/magnetic nanoarchitectures (P/MNAs) inspires abundant methodologies to enhance light-matter interactions and control magnetic-induced effects by means of fine-tuning the morphology and ordered packing of noble metallic or magnetic building blocks. The burgeoning development of multifunctional nanoarchitectures has opened up broad range of interdisciplinary applications including biosensing, in vitro diagnostic devices, point-of-care (POC) platforms, and soft bioelectronics. By taking advantage of their customizability and efficient conjugation with capping biomolecules, various nanoarchitectures have been integrated into high-performance biosensors with remarkable sensitivity and versatility, enabling key features that combined multiplexed detection, ease-of-use and miniaturization. In this review, we provide an overview of the representative developments of nanoarchitectures that being built by plasmonic and magnetic nanoparticles over recent decades. The design principles and key mechanisms for signal amplification and quantitative sensitivity have been explored. We highlight the structure-function programmability and prospects of addressing the main limitations for conventional biosensing strategies in terms of accurate selectivity, sensitivity, throughput, and optoelectronic integration. State-of-the-art strategies to achieve affordable and field-deployable POC devices for early multiplexed detection of infectious diseases such as COVID-19 has been covered in this review. Finally, we discuss the urgent yet challenging issues in nanoarchitectures design and related biosensing application, such as large-scale fabrication and integration with portable devices, and provide perspectives and suggestions on developing smart biosensors that connecting the materials science and biomedical engineering for personal health monitoring.

Abstract
AbstractDNA, the well‐known molecule that carries the genetic information of almost all forms of life, represents a pivotal element in formulating intelligent and versatile micro/nanorobotic systems. DNA‐functionalized micro/nanorobots have opened new and exciting opportunities in many research areas due to the synergistic combination of self‐propulsion at the micro/nanoscale and the high specificity and programmability of DNA interactions. Here, their designs and applications are critically reviewed, which span from the use of DNA as the fuel to chemotactically power nanorobots toward cancer cells to DNA as the main building block for sophisticated phototactic biorobots, DNA nanodevices to self‐monitor microrobots’ activity status, DNA and RNA sensing, nucleic acids isolation, gene therapy, and water purification. The perspective on future directions of the field is also shared, envisioning DNA‐mediated reconfigurable assemblies of nanorobotic swarms.

Abstract
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has prompted an urgent demand for nanotechnological solutions towards the global healthcare crisis, particularly in the field of diagnostics, vaccines, and therapeutics. As an emerging tool for nanoscience and technology, micro/nanorobots have demonstrated advanced performances, such as self-propelling, precise maneuverability, and remote actuation, thus hold great potential to provide breakthroughs in the COVID-19 pandemic. Here we show a plasmonic-magnetic nanorobot-based simple and efficient COVID-19 detection assay through an electronic readout signal. The nanorobots consist of Fe3O4 backbone and the outer surface of Ag, that rationally designed to perform magnetic-powered propulsion and navigation, concomitantly the probe nucleic acids transport and release upon the hybridization which can be quantified with the differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) technique. The magnetically actuated nanorobots swarming enables enhanced micromixing and active targeting, thereby promoting binding kinetics. Experimental results verified the enhanced sensing efficiency, with nanomolar detection limit and high selectivity. Further testing with extracted SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA samples validated the clinical applicability of the proposed assay. This strategy is versatile to extend targeting various nucleic acids, thus it could be a promising detection tool for other emerging pathogens, environmental toxins, and forensic analytes.

Abstract
The successful integration of well-designed micro-nanomotors (MNMs) with diverse functional systems, such as, living systems, remote actuation systems, intelligent sensors, and sensing systems, offers many opportunities to not only endow them with diverse functionalization interfaces but also bring augmented or new properties in a wide variety of applications. Core-shell structured MNM systems have been considered to play an important role in a wide range of applications as they provide a platform to integrate multiple complementary components via decoration, encapsulation, or functionalization into a single functional system, being able to protect the active species from harsh environments, and bring improved propulsion performance, stability, non-toxicity, multi-functionality, and dispersibility, etc., which are not easily available from the isolated components. More importantly, the hetero-interfaces between individual components within a core-shell structure might give rise to boosted or new physiochemical properties. This review will bring together these key aspects of the core-shell structured MNMs, ranging from advanced protocols, enhanced/novel functionalities arising from diverse functional shells, to integrated core-shell structured MNMs for diverse applications. Finally, current challenges and future perspectives for the development of core-shell structured MNMs are discussed in term of synthesis, functions, propulsions, and applications.

Abstract
Currently utilized molecular detection methods are based mainly on nucleic acid extraction, amplification, and detection procedures that may require costly equipment, numerous reagents, and highly trained personnel. These requirements make diagnostic tests expensive, time-consuming, and not suitable for point-of-care applications. There is an increasing demand for simple, low-cost portable technologies. To overcome these challenges, a paper-based elution independent collection device (EICD) was designed to collect microorganisms and recover nucleic acids for molecular biology applications with minimal steps. In this study, we demonstrate a simpler Anaplasma marginale detection that uses an EICD for nucleic acid collection combined with recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA), and a lateral flow dipstick for detection of the specified target. A pre-lysis blood treatment was optimized that uses Triton X-100 lysis buffer and bovine serum album in wash buffer. Blood samples were incubated for 5 min at room temperature and run through the EICD. Four 1-mm diameter discs excised from EICD were used as template in basic RPA and lateral flow (nfo) (endonuclease IV) RPA assays. Each disc of soluble central membrane (SCM) carried circa 0.249 pg/µl of Anaplasma DNA. The percentage of nucleic acid recoverable from the SCM ranged between 60% - 70%. Blood samples infected with A. marginale were treated with Triton X-100 pre-lysis protocol. All samples tested positive by PCR and RPA methods. EICD-driven collection of blood samples is a practical method successfully adapted to detect Anaplasma spp. or blood-borne pathogen DNA and has potential for point-of-care detection in resource-limited settings.

Abstract
In this present study, the preparation of chitosan functionalized gold‑nickel wire nanomachines (nanomotors) (CS@Au-Ni NMs) for motion-based double-stranded deoxyribonucleic acid (dsDNA) recognition and detection was described. Synthesis of the nanomachines was accomplished by Ni layer formation using direct current (DC) magnetron sputtering over electrochemically deposited Au wires. Subsequently, biopolymer chitosan was dispersed onto this bimetallic layer by drop casting which could provide a novel and functional surface for leading bio-applications. CS@Au-Ni NMs were characterized via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and zeta potential analysis methods for the elucidation of structural morphology, elemental composition and electrophoretic mobility. On account of presenting the application of these magnetic nanomachines, they were interacted with different concentrations of dsDNA and the changes in their velocities were investigated. The speed CS@Au-Ni NMs were measured as 19 μm/s under 22 mT magnetic field. These magnetically guided nanomachines demonstrated a practical and good sensing ability by recognizing dsDNA between 0.01 mg/L and 10 mg/L. Electrochemical characterization was also performed to identify the surface characteristics. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) experiments presented the interaction of the NMs with dsDNA by indicating the convenient recognition.

Abstract
In this study, surface acoustic wave (SAW) systems are described for the removal of molecules that are unbound to micromotors, thereby lowering the detection limit of the cancer-related biomarker miRNA-21. For this purpose, in the first step, mass production of the Au/Pt bimetallic tubular micromotor was performed with a simple membrane template electrodeposition. The motions of catalytic Au/Pt micromotors in peroxide fuel media were analyzed under the SAW field effect. The changes in the micromotor speed were investigated depending on the type and concentration of surfactants in the presence and absence of SAW streaming. Our detection strategy was based on immobilization of probe dye-labeled single-stranded probe DNA (6-carboxyfluorescein dye-labeled-single-stranded DNA) to Au/Pt micromotors that recognize target miRNA-21. Before/after hybridization of miRNA-21 (for both w/o SAW and SAW streaming conditions), the changes in the speed of micromotors and their fluorescence intensities were studied. The response of fluorescence intensities was observed to be linearly varied with the increase of the miRNA-21 concentration from 0.5 to 5 nM under both w/o SAW and with SAW. The resulting fluorescence sensor showed a limit of detection of 0.19 nM, more than 2 folds lower compared to w/o SAW conditions. Thus, the sensor and behaviors of Au/Pt tubular micromotors were improved by acoustic removal systems.

Abstract
Cell robots that transform natural cells into active platforms hold great potential to enrich the biomedical prospects of artificial microrobots. Here, we present Janus yeast cell microrobots (JYC-robots) prepared by asymmetrically coating Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) and subsequent in situ growth of zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) on the surface of yeast cells. The magnetic actuation relies on the Fe3O4 NPs wrapping. As the compositions of cell robots, the cell wall with abundant polysaccharide coupling with porous and oxidative ZIF-67 can concurrently remove mycotoxin (e.g., zearalenone (ZEN)). The magnetic propulsion accelerates the decontamination efficiency of JYC-robots against ZEN. Although yeast cells with fully coating of Fe3O4 NPs and ZIF-67 (FC-yeasts) show faster movement than JYC-robots, higher toxin-removal efficacy is observed for JYC-robots compared with that of FC-yeasts, reflecting the vital factor of the yeast cell wall in removing mycotoxin. Such design with Janus modification of magnetic NPs (MNPs) and entire coating of ZIF-67 generates active cell robot platform capable of fuel-free propulsion and enhanced detoxification, offering a new formation to develop cell-based robotics system for environmental remediation.

Abstract
This paper provides an updated review of recent advances in microfluidics applied to artificial and biohybrid microswimmers. Sharing the common regime of low Reynolds number, the two fields have been brought together to take advantage of the fluid characteristics at the microscale, benefitting microswimmer research multifold. First, microfluidics offer simple and relatively low-cost devices for high-fidelity production of microswimmers made of organic and inorganic materials in a variety of shapes and sizes. Microscale confinement and the corresponding fluid properties have demonstrated differential microswimmer behaviors in microchannels or in the presence of various types of physical or chemical stimuli. Custom environments to study these behaviors have been designed in large part with the help of microfluidics. Evaluating microswimmers in increasingly complex lab environments such as microfluidic systems can ensure more effective implementation for in-field applications. The benefits of microfluidics for the fabrication and evaluation of microswimmers are balanced by the potential use of microswimmers for sample manipulation and processing in microfluidic systems, a large obstacle in diagnostic and other testing platforms. In this review various ways in which these two complementary technology fields will enhance microswimmer development and implementation in various fields are introduced.

Abstract
The idea of "fantastic voyagers" carrying out medical tasks within the human body has existed as part of popular culture for many decades. The concept revolved around a miniaturized robot that can travel inside the human body and perform complicated functions such as surgery, navigation of otherwise inaccessible biological environments, and delivery of therapeutics. Since the last decade, significant developments have occurred in this arena that are yet to enter mainstream biomedical practises. Here, we define the challenges to make this fiction into reality. We begin by chalking the journey from pills, nanoparticles, and then to micro-nanomotors. The review describes the principles, physicochemical contexts, and advantages that micro-nanomotors provide. The article then describes micro-nanomotors' obstacles such as maneuverability, in vivo imaging, toxicity, and biodistribution. Abstract
Mobile micro- and nano-motors (MNMs) emerge as revolutionary platforms for biomedical applications, including drug delivery, biosensing, non-invasive surgery, and cancer therapy. While for applications in biomedical fields and practical clinical translation, the interactions of these untethered tiny machines with the immune system is an essential issue to be considered. This review highlights the recent approaches of surpassing immune barriers to prevent foreign motors from triggering immune responses. In addition to trials focusing on the function preservation of MNMs, examples of versatile MNMs working with the immune components (immune molecules, immune cells and the whole system) to achieve cancer immunotherapy, immunoassay, and detoxification are outlined. The immune interference part provides researchers an idea about what is the limit presented by the immune components. The coworking part suggests ways to bypass or even utilize the limit. With interdisciplinary cooperation of nanoengineering, materials science, and immunology field, the rationally designed functional MNMs are expected to provide novel opportunities for the biomedical field.

Abstract
Micro/nanomotors bring new possibilities for the detection and therapy of diseases related to the blood environment with their unique motion effect. This work reviews the research progress of using micro/nanomotors in the detection and therapy of diseases related to the blood environment. First, we outline the advantages of using micro/nanomotors in blood-related disease detection. To be specific, the motion capability of micro/nanomotors can increase plasma or blood fluid convection and accelerate the interaction between the sample and the capture probe. This allows the effective reduction of the amount of reagents and treatment steps. Therefore, the application of micro/nanomotors significantly improves the analytical performance. Second, we discuss the key challenges and future prospects of micro/nanomotors in the treatment of blood-environment related diseases. It is very important to design a unique treatment plan according to the etiology and specific microenvironment of the disease. The next generation of micro/nanomotors is expected to bring exciting progress to the detection and therapy of blood-environment related diseases.

Abstract
Nanoscale robotics have the ability that it can productively transform multiple energy sources into motion and strength which reflects an expeditiously appearing and captivating area for research of robotics. In today's plethora, biomedical nanorobotics played an intricate character with numerous units of robots working at the pathological site in a coordinated manner. The synergistic action of the several nanorobotics has been employed for the fulfilment of the task such as large-scale detoxification, delivery of the large pharmacological/therapeutic efficacious payloads, etc. that is nearly unfeasible or unalterable practically by using single nanorobot. The collective intelligence of the nanorobot is advancing progressively at the nanoscale to reinforce their precision treatment potentially. Abstract
Field-assisted self-assembly, motion, and manipulation of droplets have gained much attention in the past decades. We exhibit an electric field manipulation of the motion of a liquid metal (mercury) droplet submerged in a conductive liquid medium (a solution of sulfuric acid). A mercury droplet moves toward the cathode and its path selection is always given by the steepest descent of the local electric field potential. Utilizing this unique behavior, we present several examples of droplet motions, including maze solving, electro-levitation, and motion on a diverted path between parallel electrodes by controlling the conductivity of the medium. We also present an experimental demonstration of Fermat's principle in a non-optical system, namely a mercury droplet moving along a refracted path between electrodes in a domain having two different conductivities.

Abstract
High-sensitivity detection of minute quantities or concentration variations of analytes of clinical importance is critical for biosensing to ensure accurate disease diagnostics and reliable health monitoring. A variety of sensitivity-improving concepts have been proposed from chemical, physical, and biological perspectives. In this review, elements that are responsible for sensitivity enhancement are classified and discussed in accordance with their operating steps in a typical biosensing workflow that runs through sampling, analyte recognition, and signal transduction. With a focus on optical biosensing, exemplary sensitivity-improving strategies are introduced, which can be developed into "plug-and-play" modules for many current and future sensors, and discuss their mechanisms to enhance biosensing performance. Three major strategies are covered: i) amplification of signal transduction by polymerization and nanocatalysts, ii) diffusion-limit-breaking systems for enhancing sensor-analyte contact and subsequent analyte recognition by fluid-mixing and analyte-concentrating, and iii) combined approaches that utilize renal concentration at the sampling and recognition steps and chemical signal amplification at the signal transduction step.

Abstract
Advances in medical robots promise to improve modern medicine and the quality of life. Miniaturization of these robotic platforms has led to numerous applications that leverages precision medicine. In this review, the current trends of medical micro and nanorobotics for therapy, surgery, diagnosis, and medical imaging are discussed. The use of micro and nanorobots in precision medicine still faces technical, regulatory, and market challenges for their widespread use in clinical settings. Nevertheless, recent translations from proof of concept to in vivo studies demonstrate their potential toward precision medicine.

Abstract
A bubble-propelled autonomous micro/nanomotor (MNM) is a device driven by a catalytic reaction that involves a solid-liquid-gas interface, which in turn is a key factor in achieving effective propulsion. Generally, modifying the liquid phase by adding surfactants can improve propulsion, but it has several disadvantages. It is reported that the rapid separation of bubbles will accelerate the movement of MNMs. Our focus is on methods to drive the motor efficiently by controlling the wettability of the solid phase, accelerating bubble separation without compromising the activity of the catalyst. In this study, different from most of the previous studies on moving MNMs, a static Pt loaded TiO2 nanowire aggregation was utilized as a nanomotor aggregation to investigate the wettability of the solid phase on bubble release. In comparison to an underwater aerophilic solid phase, in which bubbles are strongly held on the surface, the nanomotor's aggregation showed good aerophobicity. In particular, after UV illumination for 30 s, the nanomotor's aggregation became superaerophobic, which significantly promoted the release of O2 bubbles. The results of this study reveal how to modify the detachment behaviour of bubbles by controlling the aerophobic behaviour of solid surfaces of autonomous MNMs in an aqueous medium.

Abstract
Micro/nanomotors (MNMs) are miniaturized machines that can perform assigned tasks at the micro/nanoscale. Over the past decade, significant progress has been made in the design, preparation, and applications of MNMs that are powered by converting different sources of energy into mechanical force, to realize active movement and fulfill on-demand tasks. MNMs can be navigated to desired locations with precise controllability based on different guidance mechanisms. A considerable research effort has gone into demonstrating that MNMs possess the potential of biomedical cargo loading, transportation, and targeted release to achieve therapeutic functions. Herein, the recent advances of self-propelled MNMs for on-demand biomedical cargo transportation, including their self-propulsion mechanisms, guidance strategies, as well as proof-of-concept studies for biological applications are presented. In addition, some of the major challenges and possible opportunities of MNMs are identified for future biomedical applications in the hope that it may inspire future research.

Abstract
The diverse capabilities of self-propelled micro/nanomotors open up significant opportunities for various environmental and biomedical applications. Here, a synchronized two-lobed bubble exhaust drives micromotor comprising a metal (cobalt and gold) sandwiched polytryptophan body (Au/poly-Trp/Co) in a non-curved direction. The autonomous motion is achieved through the decomposition of chemical fuel to result in a kayak-like system. The ejected oxygen bubbles from the interfacial cobalt/polytryptophan layer, as well as the inert nature of the metal segments (Au-Co), were considered for some computational studies of the electronic properties of the composite and physical phenomena at the kayak/electrolyte interfaces, and confirmed the role of Co-Trp in the fuel decomposition. It is believed that the autonomous motion is the combined result of bubble recoil force, self-electrophoresis, and perturbation in the interfacial hydrogen-bond network of the poly-Trp body and water molecules. The velocity of the micromotor in the range 23±4 to 157±17 μm s-1 at different concentrations of H2 O2 from 1 % to 10 %. Depending on the method of fragmentation, it is possible to have both single and multiple motorized kayaks with lengths of 1.5 and 6 μm, respectively, that can be tailored for environmental applications.

Abstract
A magnetic urchin-like microswimmer based on sunflower pollen grain (SPG) that can pierce the cancer cell membrane and actively deliver therapeutic drugs is reported. These drug loaded microperforators are fabricated on a large scale by sequentially treating the natural SPGs with acidolysis, sputtering, and vacuum loading. The microswimmers exhibit precise autonomous navigation and obstacle avoidance in complex environments via association with artificial intelligence. Assemblies of microswimmers can further enhance individual motion performance and adaptability to complicated environments. Additionally, the experimental results demonstrate that microswimmers with nanospikes can accomplish single-cell perforation for direct delivery under an external rotating magnetic field. Drugs encapsulated in the inner cavity of the microperforators can be accurately delivered to a specific site via remote control. These dual-action microswimmers demonstrate good biocompatibility, high intelligence, precision in single-cell targeting, and sufficient drug loading, presenting a promising avenue for many varieties of biomedical applications.

Abstract
Nanotherapies based on micelles, liposomes, polymersomes, nanocapsules, magnetic nanoparticles, and noble metal nanoparticles have been at the forefront of drug delivery in the past few decades. Some of these nanopharmaceuticals have been commercially applied to treat a wide range of diseases, from dry eye syndrome to cancer. However, the majority involve particles that are passive, meaning that they do not change shape, and they lack motility; the static features can limit their therapeutic efficacy. In this review, we take a critical look at an emerging field that seeks to utilize active matter for therapeutics. In this context, active matter can be broadly referred to as micro or nanosized constructs that energetically react with their environment or external fields and translate, rotate, vibrate or change shape. Essentially, the recent literature suggests that such particles could significantly augment present-day drug delivery, by enhancing transport and increasing permeability across anatomical barriers by transporting drugs within solid tumor microenvironments or disrupting cardiovascular plaque. We discuss examples of such particles and link the transport and permeability properties of active matter to potential therapeutic applications in the context of two major diseases, namely cancer and heart disease. We also discuss potential challenges, opportunities, and translational hurdles.

Abstract
Based on the exceptional and new opened biosensing possibilities of self-propelled micromotors, a micromotor-based immunoassay (MIm) has smartly been designed for C-reactive protein (CRP) determination in plasma of preterm infants with sepsis suspicion. The design of the micromotors involved the electrosynthesis of a carbon-based outer layer (for antibody functionalization), an intermediate Ni layer (for magnetic guidance and stopped flow operations) and PtNPs inner catalytic layer (for catalytic bubble propulsion). Micromotors biofunctionalization on the outer layer (using carbon black (CB), reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), and biocompatible propulsion capabilities, were carefully studied. Magnetic rGO/Ni/PtNPs micromotors exhibited the most efficient and reproducible (CV = 9%) anti-CRP functionalization, controlled stopped-flow operations as well as efficient bubble propulsion (1% H2O2, 1,5% NaCh, speed 140 μm s-1). Analytical performance of MIm was excellent, allowing the direct (without dilution), sensitive (LOD = 0.80 μg/mL), and accurate CRP determination (Er = 1%) in hardly available preterm babies' plasma samples with suspected sepsis using very low volumes (<10 μL) and in just 5 min of on-the-fly bioassay. Overall, the results obtained allowed the fast and reliable sepsis diagnostics in preterm babies' individuals with suspected sepsis, not only proving the usefulness of the approach as its potential utilization as point-of-care device for clinical analysis but drawing new horizons in extremely low sample volumes-based diagnostics.

Abstract
A colloidal particle driven by externally actuated rotation can self-propel parallel to a rigid boundary by exploiting the hydrodynamic coupling that surfaces induce between translation and rotation. As such a roller moves along the boundary it generates local vortical flows, which can be used to trap and transport passive cargo particles. However, the details and conditions for this trapping mechanism have not yet been fully understood. Here, we show that the trapping of cargo is accomplished through time-irreversible interactions between the cargo and the boundary, leading to its migration across streamlines into a steady flow vortex next to the roller. The trapping mechanism is explained analytically with a two dimensional model, investigated numerically in three dimensions for a wide range of parameters and is shown to be analogous to the deterministic lateral displacement (DLD) technique used in microfluidics for the separation of differently sized particles. The several geometrical parameters of the problem are analysed and we predict that thin, disc-like rollers offer the most favourable trapping conditions.

Abstract
Magnetic Janus particles bring together the ability of Janus particles to perform two different functions at the same time in a single particle with magnetic properties enabling their remote manipulation, which allows headed movement and orientation. This article reviews the preparation procedures and applications in the (bio)sensing field of static and self-propelled magnetic Janus particles. The main progress in the fabrication procedures and the applicability of these particles are critically discussed, also giving some clues on challenges to be dealt with and future prospects. The promising characteristics of magnetic Janus particles in the (bio)sensing field, providing increased kinetics and sensitivity and decreased times of analysis derived from the use of external magnetic fields in their manipulation, allows foreseeing their great and exciting potential in the medical and environmental remediation fields.

Abstract
Autonomous micro-/nanomachines that can convert diverse energy sources into effective locomotion under the constraint of low Reynolds numbers hold considerable promise for a variety of applications, such as cargo delivery, localized biosensing, nanosurgery, and detoxification. In this Minireview, we briefly overview recent advances in the development of micro-/nanomachines that are specifically powered by ultrasound, in particular new concept design, their working principles, and their fabrication and manipulation strategies. Finally, the exclusive biocompatibility and sustainability of ultrasound-powered micro-/nanomachines, as well as the critical challenges that face their in vivo application, are discussed to provide insight for the next phase of micro-/nanomachines with versatile functionalities and enhanced capabilities.
