Orienting nanoantennas in three dimensions to control light scattering across a dielectric interface

Orientation-Dependent Interaction between the Magnetic Plasmons in Gold Nanocups and the Excitons in WS2 Monolayer and Multilayer

The integration of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides with plasmonic nanostructures is extremely attractive for the investigation of the resonance coupling between plasmons and excitons, which offers a framework for the study of cavity quantum electrodynamics and is of great potential for exploring diverse quantum technologies. Herein we report on the coupling between the magnetic plasmons supported by individual asymmetric Au nanocups and the excitons in WS₂ monolayer and multilayer. Resonance coupling with the strength varying from weak to strong regimes is realized by adjusting the orientation of the individual Au nanocups on WS₂ monolayer. Different energy detunings between the magnetic plasmons and the excitons are achieved by varying the size of the Au nanocup. The Rabi splitting energies extracted at zero detuning are up to 106 meV. The anticrossing feature is observed in the measured scattering spectra and simulated absorption spectra, which indicates that the resonance coupling between the magnetic plasmons in the Au nanocup and the excitons in WS₂ monolayer enters the strongly coupled regime. A dependence of the coupling strength on the layer number is further observed when the Au nanocups are coupled with WS₂ multilayer. Our study suggests a promising approach toward the realization of different coupling regimes in a simple hybrid system made of individual Au nanocups and two-dimensional materials.

Control of the emission from electric and magnetic dipoles by gold nanocup antennas

The control of the emission from electric and magnetic dipoles is highly desired for the development of optic chips. Although the emission of electric dipole has been successfully controlled by plasmonic nanoantenna, the control of magnetic dipole emission is relatively difficult. Here, we systematically study the effect of electric and magnetic modes of Au nanocups on the emission of electric and magnetic dipoles. The emission of electric dipole can be enhanced by both the electric and magnetic mode of the Au nanocup, while the emission of the magnetic dipole is only increased by the magnetic mode. The enhancement exhibits wavelength dependence. The wavelength of the largest enhancement is determined by the resonance wavelength of electric and magnetic modes. The enhancement values for electric and magnetic dipoles are determined by the near-field electric and magnetic field enhancements, respectively. More importantly, the emission pattern of magnetic dipole is greatly modified by the magnetic mode of Au nanocup. The directional emission of magnetic dipole is first time realized by use of the magnetic mode of the Au nanocup. Our findings deepen the understanding of the plasmon-controlled emission of electric and magnetic dipoles and will be very helpful to the development of the nanophotonic chips.

Au Nanobottles with Synthetically Tunable Overall and Opening Sizes for Chemo-Photothermal Combined Therapy

Highly asymmetric Au nanostructures, such as split Au nanorings and Au nanocups, exhibit attractive plasmonic properties because of their asymmetric geometries. To facilitate their plasmonic applications, effective and facile synthetic methods for producing asymmetric Au nanostructures with controllable sizes and uniform shapes are highly desirable. Herein, we report on an approach for the synthesis of largely asymmetric colloidal Au nanobottles with synthetically tunable overall and opening sizes. Au nanobottles with overall sizes in the range of ∼100-230 nm are obtained through sacrificial templating with differently sized PbS nano-octahedra. The opening sizes of the produced Au nanobottles can be tailored from ∼10 to ∼120 nm by either adjusting the Au/PbS molar ratio in the growth process or controlling the oxidation degree. The achieved size tunability allows the plasmon resonance wavelength of Au nanobottles to be varied in the range of ∼600-900 nm. Our uniform Au nanobottles, which possess controllable sizes, large cavity volumes, and tunable plasmon resonance wavelengths in the visible to near-infrared range, have been further applied for anticancer drug delivery and photothermal therapy. The effects of surface coating and the opening size of Au nanobottles on the drug encapsulation efficiency (EE) and initial burst drug release are systemically evaluated. A high doxorubicin EE and low initial burst drug release are realized with the dense silica-coated Au nanobottles having an opening size of 44 nm. In addition, chemo-photothermal combined therapy has been demonstrated with the doxorubicin-loaded Au nanobottles. Our results will be helpful for the design of Au nanobottles with different sizes and plasmonic properties as well as provide ample opportunities for exploring various plasmon-enabled applications of Au nanobottles.

Synthesis of Polystyrene⁻Polyphenylsiloxane Janus Particles through Colloidal Assembly with Unexpected High Selectivity: Mechanistic Insights and Their Application in the Design of Polystyrene Particles with Multiple Polyphenylsiloxane Patches

Janus particles are of great research interest because of their reduced symmetry, which provides them with unique physical and chemical properties. Such particles can be prepared from spherical structures through colloidal assembly. Whilst colloidal assembly has the potential to be a low cost and scalable process, it typically lacks selectivity. As a consequence, it results in a complex mixture of particles of different architectures, which is tedious to purify. Very recently, we reported the colloidal synthesis of Au semishells, making use of polystyrene⁻polyphenylsiloxane Janus particles as an intermediate product (Chem. Commun. 2017, 53, 3898⁻3901). Here, we demonstrate that these Janus particles are realized through colloidal assembly of spherical glucose-functionalized polystyrene particles and an emulsion of phenyltrimethoxysilane in aqueous ammonia, followed by interfacial polycondensation to form the polyphenylsiloxane patch. Both the polystyrene spheres and the emulsion of Ph-TMS in aqueous ammonia are stabilized by a surfmer-a reactive surfactant. The colloidal assembly reported in this manuscript proceeds with an unexpected high selectivity, which makes this process exceptionally interesting for the synthesis of Janus particles. Furthermore, we report insights into the details of the mechanism of formation of these Janus particles, and apply those to adapt the synthesis conditions to produce polystyrene particles selectively decorated with multiple polyphenylsiloxane patches, e.g., raspberry particles.

Controllable Fabrication of Au Nanocups by Confined-Space Thermal Dewetting for OCT Imaging

Here, this study reports a novel confined-space thermal dewetting strategy for the fabrication of Au nanocups with tunable diameter, height, and size of cup opening. The nanocup morphology is defined by the cup-shaped void space created by a yolk-shell silica template that spontaneously takes an eccentric configuration during annealing. Thermal dewetting of Au, which is sandwiched between the yolk and shell, leads to the desired nanocup morphology. With strong scattering in near infrared, the Au nanocups exhibit superior efficiency as contrast agents for spectral-domain optical coherence tomography imaging. This confined-space thermal dewetting strategy is scalable and general, and can be potentially extended to the synthesis of novel anisotropic nanostructures of various compositions that are difficult to produce by conventional wet chemical or physical methods, thus opening up opportunities for many new applications.

Protecting patches in colloidal synthesis of Au semishells

Protecting groups are commonly applied in multi-step molecular syntheses to protect one or multiple functional groups from reacting. After the reaction, they are removed from the molecule. In full analogy to this concept, we report the practical and scalable colloidal synthesis of Au semishells using polyphenylsiloxane protecting patches to prevent part of the surface of polystyrene nanoparticles from being covered with Au. After Au deposition, the patches are removed yielding Au semishells. We anticipate that this strategy can be extended to the synthesis of other types of non-centrosymmetric nanoparticles.

Colloidal Gold Nanocups with Orientation-Dependent Plasmonic Properties

Colloidal gold nanocups are synthesized through single-vertex-initiated gold deposition on PbS nanooctahedrons and subsequent selective dissolution of the PbS component. They possess strong magnetic plasmon resonance and exhibit remarkable orientation-dependent plasmonic properties when deposited on flat substrates. They can also effectively couple s-polarized light into the interfacial region between the nanocup and substrate.

Directional Light Extinction and Emission in a Metasurface of Tilted Plasmonic Nanopillars

Plasmonic optical antennas and metamaterials with an ability to boost light-matter interactions for particular incidence or emission angles could find widespread use in solar harvesting, biophotonics, and in improving photon source performance at optical frequencies. However, directional plasmonic structures have generally large footprints or require complicated geometries and costly nanofabrication technologies. Here, we present a directional metasurface realized by breaking the out-of-plane symmetry of its individual elements: tilted subwavelength plasmonic gold nanopillars. Directionality is caused by the complex charge oscillation induced in each individual nanopillar, which essentially acts as a tilted dipole above a dielectric interface. The metasurface is homogeneous over a macroscopic area and it is fabricated by a combination of facile colloidal lithography and off-normal metal deposition. Fluorescence excitation and emission from dye molecules deposited on the metasurface is enhanced in specific directions determined by the tilt angle of the nanopillars. We envisage that these directional metasurfaces can be used as cost-effective substrates for surface-enhanced spectroscopies and a variety of nanophotonic applications.

Dielectric function of spherical dome shells with quantum size effects

Metallic spherical dome shells have received much attention in recent years because they have proven to possess highly impressive optical properties. The expected distinctive changes occurring owing to quantum confinement of conduction electrons in these nanoparticles as their thickness is reduced, have not been properly investigated. Here we carry out a detailed analytical derivation of the quantum contributions by introducing linearly shifted Associated Legendre Polynomials, which form an approximate orthonormal eigenbasis for the single-electron Hamiltonian of a spherical dome shell. Our analytical results clearly show the contribution of different elements of a spherical dome shell to the effective dielectric function. More specifically, our results provide an accurate, quantitative correction for the dielectric function of metallic spherical dome shells with thickness below 10 nm.

Polarization tailored light driven directional optical nanobeacon

We experimentally demonstrate all-optical control of the emission directivity of a dipole-like nanoparticle with spinning dipole moment sitting on the interface to an optical denser medium. The particle itself is excited by a tightly focused polarization tailored light beam under normal incidence. The position dependent local polarization of the focal field allows for tuning the dipole moment via careful positioning of the particle relative to the beam axis. As an application of this scheme, we investigate the polarization dependent coupling to a planar two-dimensional dielectric waveguide.

Electromagnetic study of the chlorosome antenna complex of Chlorobium tepidum

Green sulfur bacteria are an iconic example of nature's adaptation: thriving in environments of extremely low photon density, the bacterium ranks itself among the most efficient natural light-harvesting organisms. The photosynthetic antenna complex of this bacterium is a self-assembled nanostructure, ≈60 × 150 nm, made of bacteriochlorophyll molecules. We study the system from a computational nanoscience perspective by using electrodynamic modeling with the goal of understanding its role as a nanoantenna. Three different nanostructures, built from two molecular packing moieties, are considered: a structure built of concentric cylinders of aggregated bacteriochlorophyll d monomers, a single cylinder of bacteriochlorophyll c monomers, and a model for the entire chlorosome. The theoretical model captures both coherent and incoherent components of exciton transfer. The model is employed to extract optical spectra, concentration and depolarization of electromagnetic fields within the chlorosome, and fluxes of energy transfer for the structures. The second model nanostructure shows the largest field enhancement. Further, field enhancement is found to be more sensitive to dynamic noise rather than structural disorder. Field depolarization, however, is similar for all structures. This indicates that the directionality of transfer is robust to structural variations, while on the other hand, the intensity of transfer can be tuned by structural variations.
