Examining efficacy of "TAT-less" delivery of a peptide against the L-type calcium channel in cardiac ischemia-reperfusion injury

Remote ischemic preconditioning reduces mitochondrial apoptosis mediated by calpain 1 activation in myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury through calcium channel subunit Cacna2d3

Remote Ischemic Preconditioning (RIPC) can reduce myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury, but its mechanism is not clear. In order to explore the mechanism of RIPC in myocardial protection, we collected myocardial specimens during cardiac surgery in children with tetralogy of Fallot for sequencing. Our study found RIPC reduces the expression of the calcium channel subunit cacna2d3, thereby impacting the function of calcium channels. As a result, calcium overload during ischemia-reperfusion is reduced, and the activation of calpain 1 is inhibited. This ultimately leads to a decrease in calpain 1 cleavage of Bax, consequently inhibiting increased mitochondrial permeability-mediated apoptosis. Notably, in both murine and human models of myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury, RIPC inhibiting the expression of the calcium channel subunit cacna2d3 and the activation of calpain 1, improving cardiac function and histological outcomes. Overall, our findings put forth a proposed mechanism that elucidates how RIPC reduces myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury, ultimately providing a solid theoretical foundation for the widespread clinic application of RIPC.

Biomaterials-mediated targeted therapeutics of myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury

Reperfusion therapy is widely used to treat acute myocardial infarction. However, its efficacy is limited by myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (MIRI), which occurs paradoxically due to the reperfusion therapy and contributes to the high mortality rate of acute myocardial infarction. Systemic administration of drugs, such as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agents, to reduce MIRI is often ineffective due to the inadequate release at the pathological sites. Functional biomaterials are being developed to optimize the use of drugs by improving their targetability and bioavailability and reducing side effects, such as gastrointestinal irritation, thrombocytopenia, and liver damage. This review provides an overview of controlled drug delivery biomaterials for treating MIRI by triggering antioxidation, calcium ion overload inhibition, and/or inflammation regulation mechanisms and discusses the challenges and potential applications of these treatments clinically.

Nanotechnology in coronary heart disease

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is one of the major causes of death and disability worldwide, especially in low- and middle-income countries and among older populations. Conventional diagnostic and therapeutic approaches have limitations such as low sensitivity, high cost and side effects. Nanotechnology offers promising alternative strategies for the diagnosis and treatment of CHD by exploiting the unique properties of nanomaterials. In this review, we use bibliometric analysis to identify research hotspots in the application of nanotechnology in CHD and provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of the art. Nanomaterials with enhanced imaging and biosensing capabilities can improve the early detection of CHD through advanced contrast agents and high-resolution imaging techniques. Moreover, nanomaterials can facilitate targeted drug delivery, tissue engineering and modulation of inflammation and oxidative stress, thus addressing multiple aspects of CHD pathophysiology. We discuss the application of nanotechnology in CHD diagnosis (imaging and sensors) and treatment (regulation of macrophages, cardiac repair, anti-oxidative stress), and provide insights into future research directions and clinical translation. This review serves as a valuable resource for researchers and clinicians seeking to harness the potential of nanotechnology in the management of CHD. Peptides derived from high voltage-gated calcium channel β subunit reduce blood pressure in rats

The β subunits of high voltage-gated calcium channels (HGCCs) are essential for optimal channel functions such as channel gating, activation-inactivation kinetics, and trafficking to the membrane. In this study, we report for the first time the potent blood pressure-reducing effects of peptide fragments derived from the β subunits in anesthetized and non-anesthetized rats. Intravenous administration of 16-mer peptide fragments derived from the interacting regions of the β1 [cacb1(344-359)], β2 [cacb2(392-407)], β3 [cacb3(292-307)], and β4 [cacb4(333-348)] subunits with the main α-subunit of HGCC decreased arterial blood pressure in a dose-dependent manner for 5-8 min in anesthetized rats. In contrast, the peptides had no effect on the peak amplitudes of voltage-activated Ca2+ current upon their intracellular application into the acutely isolated trigeminal ganglion neurons. Further, a single mutated peptide of cacb1(344-359)-cacb1(344-359)K357R-showed consistent and potent effects and was crippled by a two-amino acid-truncation at the N-terminal or C-terminal end. By conjugating palmitic acid with the second amino acid (lysine) of cacb1(344-359)K357R (named K2-palm), we extended the blood pressure reduction to several hours without losing potency. This prolonged effect on the arterial blood pressure was also observed in non-anesthetized rats. On the other hand, the intrathecal administration of acetylated and amidated cacb1(344-359)K357R peptide did not change acute nociceptive responses induced by the intradermal formalin injection in the plantar surface of rat hindpaw. Overall, these findings will be useful for developing antihypertensives.

Nanosystems in Cardiovascular Medicine: Advancements, Applications, and Future Perspectives

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain a leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally. Despite significant advancements in the development of pharmacological therapies, the challenges of targeted drug delivery to the cardiovascular system persist. Innovative drug-delivery systems have been developed to address these challenges and improve therapeutic outcomes in CVDs. This comprehensive review examines various drug delivery strategies and their efficacy in addressing CVDs. Polymeric nanoparticles, liposomes, microparticles, and dendrimers are among the drug-delivery systems investigated in preclinical and clinical studies. Specific strategies for targeted drug delivery, such as magnetic nanoparticles and porous stent surfaces, are also discussed. This review highlights the potential of innovative drug-delivery systems as effective strategies for the treatment of CVDs.

Chemotactic NO/H2S Nanomotors Realizing Cardiac Targeting of G-CSF against Myocardial Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury

Recombinant granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), with a direct repair effect on injured cardiomyocytes against myocardial infarction ischemia-reperfusion-injury (IRI), displays a poor effect owing to the limited cardiac targeting efficacy. There are almost no reports of nanomaterials that deliver G-CSF to the IRI site. Herein, we propose a way to protect G-CSF by constructing one layer of nitric oxide (NO)/hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) nanomotors on its outside. NO/H₂S nanomotors with specific chemotactic ability to high expression of reactive oxygen species (ROS)/induced nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) at the IRI site can deliver G-CSF to the IRI site efficiently. Meanwhile, superoxide dismutase is covalently bound to the outermost part, reducing ROS at the IRI site through a cascade effect with NO/H₂S nanomotors. The synergistic effect between NO and H₂S on the effective regulation of the IRI microenvironment can not only avoid toxicity caused by excessive concentration of a single gas but also reduce inflammation level and relieve calcium overload, so as to promote G-CSF to play a cardioprotective role.

Recent advances in nanomedicines for imaging and therapy of myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury

Myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is becoming a typical cardiovascular disease with increasing worldwide incidence. It is usually induced by the restoration of normal blood flow to the ischemic myocardium after a period of recanalization and directly leads to myocardial damage. Notably, the pathological mechanism of myocardial IRI is closely related to inflammation, oxidative stress, Ca²⁺ overload, and the opening of mitochondrial permeability transition pore channels. Therefore, monitoring of these changes and imaging lesions is a key to timely clinical diagnosis. Nanomedicines have shown great value in the diagnosis and treatment of myocardial IRI, with advantages including passive/active targeting, prolonged circulation, improved bioavailability, versatile carrier selection, and synergistic integration of different imaging and therapeutic agents in single particles with the same pharmaceutics. Because theranostic nanomedicines for myocardial IRI have advanced rapidly, we conduct an updated review on this topic. The special focus is on how to rationally design the nanomedicines to achieve optimal imaging and therapy. We hope this review would stimulate the interest of researchers with different backgrounds and expedite the development of nanomedicines for myocardial IRI.

Elucidating the role of the L-type calcium channel in excitability and energetics in the heart: The ISHR 2020 Research Achievement Award Lecture

Cardiovascular disease continues to be the leading health burden worldwide and with the rising rates in obesity and type II diabetes and ongoing effects of long COVID, it is anticipated that the burden of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality will increase. Calcium is essential to cardiac excitation and contraction. The main route for Ca²⁺ influx is the L-type Ca²⁺ channel (Ca_v1.2) and embryos that are homozygous null for the Ca_v1.2 gene are lethal at day 14 postcoitum. Acute changes in Ca²⁺ influx through the channel contribute to arrhythmia and sudden death, and chronic increases in intracellular Ca²⁺ contribute to pathological hypertrophy and heart failure. We use a multidisciplinary approach to study the regulation of the channel from the molecular level through to in vivo CRISPR mutant animal models. Here we describe some examples of our work from over 2 decades studying the role of the channel under physiological and pathological conditions. Our single channel analysis of purified human Ca_v1.2 protein in proteoliposomes has contributed to understanding direct molecular regulation of the channel including identifying the critical serine involved in the "fight or flight" response. Using the same approach we identified the cysteine responsible for altered function during oxidative stress. Chronic activation of the L-type Ca²⁺ channel during oxidative stress occurs as a result of persistent glutathionylation of the channel that contributes to the development of hypertrophy. We describe for the first time that activation of the channel alters mitochondrial function (and energetics) on a beat-to-beat basis via movement of cytoskeletal proteins. In translational studies we have used this response to "report" mitochondrial function in models of cardiomyopathy and to test efficacy of novel therapies to prevent cardiomyopathy.

Non-Viral Gene Delivery Systems for Treatment of Myocardial Infarction: Targeting Strategies and Cardiac Cell Modulation

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Conventional therapies involving surgery or pharmacological strategies have shown limited therapeutic effects due to a lack of cardiac tissue repair. Gene therapy has opened an avenue for the treatment of cardiac diseases through manipulating the underlying gene mechanics. Several gene therapies for cardiac diseases have been assessed in clinical trials, while the clinical translation greatly depends on the delivery technologies. Non-viral vectors are attracting much attention due to their safety and facile production compared to viral vectors. In this review, we discuss the recent progress of non-viral gene therapies for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, with a particular focus on myocardial infarction (MI). Through a summary of delivery strategies with which to target cardiac tissue and different cardiac cells for MI treatment, this review aims to inspire new insights into the design/exploitation of non-viral delivery systems for gene cargos to promote cardiac repair/regeneration.

Advances in Nanomaterials for Injured Heart Repair

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide. Because of the limited regenerative capacity of adult myocardium to compensate for the loss of heart tissue after ischemic infarction, scientists have been exploring the possible mechanisms involved in the pathological process of ASCVD and searching for alternative means to regenerate infarcted cardiac tissue. Although numerous studies have pursued innovative solutions for reversing the pathological process of ASCVD and improving the effectiveness of delivering therapeutics, the translation of those advances into downstream clinical applications remains unsatisfactory because of poor safety and low efficacy. Recently, nanomaterials (NMs) have emerged as a promising new strategy to strengthen both the efficacy and safety of ASCVD therapy. Thus, a comprehensive review of NMs used in ASCVD treatment will be useful. This paper presents an overview of the pathophysiological mechanisms of ASCVD and the multifunctional mechanisms of NM-based therapy, including antioxidative, anti-inflammation and antiapoptosis mechanisms. The technological improvements of NM delivery are summarized and the clinical transformations concerning the use of NMs to treat ASCVD are examined. Finally, this paper discusses the challenges and future perspectives of NMs in cardiac regeneration to provide insightful information for health professionals on the latest advancements in nanotechnologies for ASCVD treatment.

Reactive oxygen species-based nanomaterials for the treatment of myocardial ischemia reperfusion injuries

Interventional coronary reperfusion strategies are widely adopted to treat acute myocardial infarction, but morbidity and mortality of acute myocardial infarction are still high. Reperfusion injuries are inevitable due to the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and apoptosis of cardiac muscle cells. However, many antioxidant and anti-inflammatory drugs are largely limited by pharmacokinetics and route of administration, such as short half-life, low stability, low bioavailability, and side effects for treatment myocardial ischemia reperfusion injury. Therefore, it is necessary to develop effective drugs and technologies to address this issue. Fortunately, nanotherapies have demonstrated great opportunities for treating myocardial ischemia reperfusion injury. Compared with traditional drugs, nanodrugs can effectively increase the therapeutic effect and reduces side effects by improving pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties due to nanodrugs’ size, shape, and material characteristics. In this review, the biology of ROS and molecular mechanisms of myocardial ischemia reperfusion injury are discussed. Furthermore, we summarized the applications of ROS-based nanoparticles, highlighting the latest achievements of nanotechnology researches for the treatment of myocardial ischemia reperfusion injury.

Preparation of Nanocomposite Peptide and Its Inhibitory Effect on Myocardial Injury in Type-II Diabetic Rats

Complications of diabetes are the main cause of death and disability in diabetic patients. Cardiovascular diseases, especially diabetic cardiomyopathy, are one of the major complications and causes of death in type 2 diabetes. Peptide drugs have a better effect on improving cellular oxidative damage, reducing tissue inflammation and inhibiting intracellular calcium overload. The application of nanotechnology to the preparation of peptide drugs and myocardial injury can effectively improve myocardial stun, arrhythmia and myocardial systolic dysfunction in patients with type 2 diabetes. The use of nanotechnology to develop more stable Glucagon-like peptide 1 analogues or sustained-release preparations, improve patient compliance and improve the efficacy of diabetes, is of great significance for the prevention and treatment of diabetic cardiomyopathy. Therefore, this study used nanotechnology to prepare PLGA-GLP-1 nanoparticles using polyglycolic acid glycolic acid as a drug carrier, which achieved long-acting drug and its morphology by transmission electron microscopy. At the same time, this study explored the anti-cardiomyocyte injury and anti-myocardial damage of PLGA-GLP-1 nanocomposite peptide and its molecular mechanism by using animal models and cell models. Experimental studies have shown that PLGA-GLP-1 nanocomposite peptide has a protective effect on myocardial injury in diabetic rats. Its mechanism is related to the PLGA-GLP-1 nanocomposite peptide enhancing the body's antioxidant capacity, anti-cardiomyocyte apoptosis, and promoting mitochondrial DNA repair in cardiomyocytes.

Voltage-dependent calcium channel β subunit-derived peptides reduce excitatory neurotransmission and arterial blood pressure

AIMS

Voltage-dependent calcium channels (VDCCs) play an important role in various physiological functions in the nervous system and the cardiovascular system. In L-, N-, P/Q-, and R-type VDCCs, β subunit assists the channels for membrane targeting and modulates channel properties. In this study, we investigated whether an inhibition of the β subunit binding to α subunit, the pore-forming main subunit of VDCCs, have any effect on channel activation and physiological functions.

MAIN METHODS

Peptides derived from the specific regions of β subunit that bind to the α-interaction domain in I-II linker of α subunit were manufactured, presuming that the peptides interrupt α-β subunit interaction in the channel complex. Then, they were tested on voltage-activated Ca²⁺ currents recorded in acutely isolated trigeminal ganglion (TG) neurons, excitatory postsynaptic currents (EPSCs) in the spinal dorsal horn neurons, and arterial blood pressure (BP) recorded from the rat femoral artery.

KEY FINDINGS

When applied internally through patch pipettes, the peptides decreased the peak amplitudes of the voltage-activated Ca²⁺ currents. After fusing with HIV transactivator of transcription (TAT) sequence to penetrate cell membrane, the peptides significantly decreased the peak amplitudes of Ca²⁺ currents and the peak amplitudes of EPSCs upon the external application through bath solution. Furthermore, the TAT-fused peptides dose dependently reduced the rat BP when administered intravenously.

SIGNIFICANCE

These data suggest that an interruption of α-β subunit association in VDCC complex inhibits channel activation, thereby reducing VDCC-mediated physiological functions such as excitatory neurotransmission and arterial BP.

A dendronized polymer variant that facilitates safe delivery of a calcium channel antagonist to the heart

Therapeutic approaches for myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (MI) have been ineffective due to limited bioavailability and poor specificity. We have previously shown that a peptide that targets the α-interaction domain of the cardiac L-type calcium channel (AID-peptide) attenuates MI when tethered to transactivator of transcription sequence (TAT) or spherical nanoparticles. However some reservations remain regarding use of these delivery platforms due to the relationship with human immunodeficiency virus, off-target effects and toxicity. Here we investigate the use of linear dendronized polymers (denpols) to deliver AID-peptide as a potential MI therapy using in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo models. Optimized denpol-complexed AID-peptide facilitated in vitro cardiac uptake of AID-peptide, and reduced MI. Maximal in vivo cardiac uptake was achieved within the 2 h therapeutic time window for acute myocardial infarction. Importantly, optimized denpol-complexed AID-peptide was not toxic. This platform may represent an alternative therapeutic approach for the prevention of MI.

Partners in Crime: Towards New Ways of Targeting Calcium Channels

The characterization of calcium channel interactome in the last decades opened a new way of perceiving ion channel function and regulation. Partner proteins of ion channels can now be considered as major components of the calcium homeostatic mechanisms, while the reinforcement or disruption of their interaction with the channel units now represents an attractive target in research and therapeutics. In this review we will focus on the targeting of calcium channel partner proteins in order to act on the channel activity, and on its consequences for cell and organism physiology. Given the recent advances in the partner proteins’ identification, characterization, as well as in the resolution of their interaction domain structures, we will develop the latest findings on the interacting proteins of the following channels: voltage-dependent calcium channels, transient receptor potential and ORAI channels, and inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor.

Distinction Between Active and Passive Targeting of Nanoparticles Dictate Their Overall Therapeutic Efficacy

The role of nanoparticles in cancer medicine is vast with debate still surrounding the distinction between therapeutic efficacy of actively targeted nanoparticles versus passively targeted systems for drug delivery. While it is commonly accepted that methodologies that result in homing a high concentration of drug loaded nanoparticles to the tumor is beneficial, the role of intracellular trafficking of these nanoparticles in dictating the overall therapeutic outcome remains unresolved. Herein we demonstrate that the therapeutic outcome of drug loaded nanoparticles is governed beyond simply enabling nanoparticle internalization in cells. Using two model polymeric nanoparticles, one decorated with the GE11 peptide for active targeting of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and the other without, we demonstrate that EGFR mediated intracellular internalization results in an enhanced therapeutic effect compared to the nontargeted formulation. Our findings demonstrate that the intracellular destination of nanoparticles beyond its ability to internalize is an important parameter that has to be accounted for in the design of targeted drug delivery systems.

Manipulating Cellular Interactions of Poly(glycidyl methacrylate) Nanoparticles Using Mixed Polymer Brushes

There is a growing need for the development of nanoparticles, with imaging and drug delivery capabilities, to maintain cellular uptake but avoid protein attachment and recognition. In this study we have demonstrated that nanoparticles consisting of a poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) core and a mixed brush architecture of methoxypoly(ethylene glycol) and poly(ethylenimine) (mPEG-PEI) on the surface can meet this need. Surface functionalization with PEI alone results in cellular uptake, but rapid protein attachment whereas PEG alone can avoid protein attachment but to the detriment of cellular uptake. A mixed copolymer brush of both PEI and mPEG provides the ideal balance.

The potential for nanotechnology to improve delivery of therapy to the acute ischemic heart

Treatment of acute cardiac ischemia remains an area in which there are opportunities for therapeutic improvement. Despite significant advances, many patients still progress to cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure. Timely reperfusion is critical in rescuing vulnerable ischemic tissue and is directly related to patient outcome, but reperfusion of the ischemic myocardium also contributes to damage. Overproduction of reactive oxygen species, initiation of an inflammatory response and deregulation of calcium homeostasis all contribute to injury, and difficulties in delivering a sufficient quantity of drug to the affected tissue in a controlled manner is a limitation of current therapies. Nanotechnology may offer significant improvements in this respect. Here, we review recent examples of how nanoparticles can be used to improve delivery to the ischemic myocardium, and suggest some approaches that may lead to improved therapies for acute cardiac ischemia.

Manipulating directional cell motility using intracellular superparamagnetic nanoparticles

This study investigated the ability for magnetic nanoparticles to influence cellular migration in the presence of an external magnetic field. We found that the direction of migrating keratinocytes can be controlled and the migration speed of fibroblasts can be increased with the internalisation of these nanoparticles in the presence of a magnetic field. The possibility of shepherding cells towards a region of interest through the use of internalized nanoparticles is an attractive prospect for cell tracking, cell therapies, and tissue engineering applications.

Nanoparticle-mediated dual delivery of an antioxidant and a peptide against the L-Type Ca2+ channel enables simultaneous reduction of cardiac ischemia-reperfusion injury

Increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and elevated intracellular Ca(2+) following cardiac ischemia-reperfusion injury are key mediators of cell death and the development of cardiac hypertrophy. The L-type Ca(2+) channel is the main route for calcium influx in cardiac myocytes. Activation of the L-type Ca(2+) channel leads to a further increase in mitochondrial ROS production and metabolism. We have previously shown that the application of a peptide derived against the alpha-interacting domain of the L-type Ca(2+) channel (AID) decreases myocardial injury post reperfusion. Herein, we examine the efficacy of simultaneous delivery of the AID peptide in combination with the potent antioxidants curcumin or resveratrol using multifunctional poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) nanoparticles. We highlight that drug loading and dissolution are important parameters that have to be taken into account when designing novel combinatorial therapies following cardiac ischemia-reperfusion injury. In the case of resveratrol low loading capacity and fast release rates hinder its applicability as an effective candidate for simultaneous therapy. However, in the case of curcumin, high loading capacity and sustained release rates enable its effective simultaneous delivery in combination with the AID peptide. Simultaneous delivery of the AID peptide with curcumin allowed for effective attenuation of the L-type Ca(2+) channel-activated increases in superoxide (assessed as changes in DHE fluorescence; Empty NP = 53.1 ± 7.6%; NP-C-AID = 7.32 ± 3.57%) and mitochondrial membrane potential (assessed as changes in JC-1 fluorescence; Empty NP = 19.8 ± 2.8%; NP-C-AID=13.05 ± 1.78%). We demonstrate in isolated rat hearts exposed to ischemia followed by reperfusion, that curcumin and the AID peptide in combination effectively reduce muscle damage, decrease oxidative stress and superoxide production in cardiac myocytes.

Protection of cardiomyocytes from the hypoxia-mediated injury by a peptide targeting the activator of G-protein signaling 8

Signaling via heterotrimeric G-protein is involved in the development of human diseases including ischemia-reperfusion injury of the heart. We previously identified an ischemia-inducible G-protein activator, activator of G-protein signaling 8 (AGS8), which regulates Gβγ signaling and plays a key role in the hypoxia-induced apoptosis of cardiomyocytes. Here, we attempted to intervene in the AGS8-Gβγ signaling process and protect cardiomyocytes from hypoxia-induced apoptosis with a peptide that disrupted the AGS8-Gβγ interaction. Synthesized AGS8-peptides, with amino acid sequences based on those of the Gβγ-binding domain of AGS8, successfully inhibited the association of AGS8 with Gβγ. The AGS8-peptide effectively blocked hypoxia-induced apoptosis of cardiomyocytes, as determined by DNA end-labeling and an increase in cleaved caspase-3. AGS8-peptide also inhibited the change in localization/permeability of channel protein connexin 43, which was mediated by AGS8-Gβγ under hypoxia. Small compounds that inhibit a wide range of Gβγ signals caused deleterious effects in cardiomyocytes. In contrast, AGS8-peptide did not cause cell damage under normoxia, suggesting an advantage inherent in targeted disruption of the AGS8-Gβγ signaling pathway. These data indicate a pivotal role for the interaction of AGS8 with Gβγ in hypoxia-induced apoptosis of cardiomyocytes, and suggest that targeted disruption of the AGS8-Gβγ signal provides a novel approach for protecting the myocardium against ischemic injury.

Nanomedical research in Australia and New Zealand

Although Australia and New Zealand have a combined population of less than 30 million, they have an active and interlinked community of nanomedical researchers. This report provides a synopsis and update on this network with a view to identifying the main topics of interest and their likely future trajectories. In addition, our report may also serve to alert others to opportunities for joint projects. Australian and New Zealand researchers are engaged in most of the possible nanomedical topics, but the majority of interest is focused on drug and nucleic acid delivery using nanoparticles or nanoporous constructs. There are, however, smaller programs directed at hyperthermal therapy and radiotherapy, various kinds of diagnostic tests and regenerative technologies.
