Abstract
Xanthates have long been described as poor RAFT/MADIX agents for styrene polymerization. Through the determination of chain transfer constants to xanthates, this work demonstrated beneficial capto-dative substituent effects for the leaving group of a new series of α-amido trifluoromethyl xanthates, with the best effect observed with trifluoroacetyl group. The previously observed Z-group activation with a O-trifluoroethyl group compared to the O-ethyl counterpart was quantitatively established with Cex = 2.7 (3-4 fold increase) using the SEC peak resolution method. This study further confirmed the advantageous incorporation of trifluoromethyl substituents to activate xanthates in radical chain transfer processes and contributed to identify the most reactive xanthate reported to date for RAFT/MADIX polymerization of styrene.

Abstract
The preparation and use of α-(acyloxy)alkyl xanthates to generate and capture α-(acyloxy)alkyl radicals is briefly reviewed. Their inter- and intramolecular additions to both activated and unactivated, electronically unbiased, alkenes, and to (hetero)aromatic rings, as well as their radical allylation and vinylation reactions are described. Application to the total synthesis of two 4-hydroxytetralone natural products is also presented.

Abstract
The development of reactions converting alkenes and alkynes into valuable building blocks remains one of the main goals of synthetic chemistry. Herein, we present the leveraging of highly electron‐deficient iminium ions, rare and fleeting intermediates, into a general amine synthesis. This enables the preparation of amines bearing e.g. valuable α‐trifluoromethyl moieties under mild conditions. This broad concept is highlighted by the late‐stage amination of quinine into a biologically interesting new analogue.

Abstract

Abstract
A general method for the hydroalkylation of electron-rich terminal and non-terminal alkenes such as enol esters, alkenyl sulfides, enol ethers, silyl enol ethers, enamides and enecarbamates has been developed. The reactions are carried out at room temperature under air initiation in the presence of triethylborane acting as a chain transfer reagent and 4-tert-butylcatechol (TBC) as a source of hydrogen atom. The efficacy of the reaction is best explained by very favorable polar effects supporting the chain process and minimizing undesired polar reactions. The stereoselective hydroalkylation of chiral N-(alk-1-en-1-yl)oxazolidin-2-ones takes place with good to excellent diastereocontrol. Giese reaction not anymore limited to electron poor alkenes! A general method for the radical mediated hydroalkylation of electron rich alkenes including enol ethers, silylenolethers, enamides, and enecarbamates has been developed.![]()

Abstract
The degenerative transfer of xanthates to olefins is enabled by the iridium-based photocatalyst [Ir{dF(CF3)ppy}2(dtbbpy)](PF6) under blue LED light irradiation. Detailed mechanistic investigations through kinetics and photophysical studies revealed that the process operates under a radical chain mechanism, which is initiated through triplet-sensitization of xanthates by the long-lived triplet state of the iridium-based photocatalyst.

Abstract
Over the past decade, the most significant, conceptual advances in the field of fluorination were enabled most prominently by organo- and transition-metal catalysis. The most challenging transformation remains the formation of the parent C-F bond, primarily as a consequence of the high hydration energy of fluoride, strong metal-fluorine bonds, and highly polarized bonds to fluorine. Most fluorination reactions still lack generality, predictability, and cost-efficiency. Despite all current limitations, modern fluorination methods have made fluorinated molecules more readily available than ever before and have begun to have an impact on research areas that do not require large amounts of material, such as drug discovery and positron emission tomography. This Review gives a brief summary of conventional fluorination reactions, including those reactions that introduce fluorinated functional groups, and focuses on modern developments in the field.

Abstract
Preparation of several acyclonucleosides containing both a difluoromethylphosphonate group and a triazole moiety is described starting from a difluorophosphonosulfide. The key step of the synthesis involves a copper(I)-catalyzed Huisgen 1-3 dipolar cycloaddition between difluorophosphonylated azides and propargylated nucleobases derived from thymine and 2-amino-6-chloropurine.

Abstract
A method for the nucleophilic trifluoromethylation of salicyl aldimines, which do not contain an activating group at the nitrogen atom, has been described. The reaction proceeds through the initial generation of intramolecular boron complex followed by interaction with Me3SiCF3 activated by sodium acetate.

Abstract
New routes to organofluorine derivatives based mostly on the powerful xanthate radical transfer technology are described. A special emphasis is placed on the synthesis of trifluoromethyl-substituted structures, including trifluromethyl ketones and fluorinated aromatic and heteroaromatic substances of interest to the pharmaceutical and agrochemical industries.

Abstract
Xanthates and related derivatives have proved to be extremely useful for both inter- and intramolecular radical additions. The broad applicability of the intermolecular addition to un-activated olefins opens tremendous opportunities for synthesis, since various functional groups can be brought together under mild conditions and complex structures can be rapidly assembled. The presence of the xanthate in the product is also a powerful asset for further modifications, by both radical and non-radical pathways. Of special importance is the access to highly substituted aromatic and heteroaromatic derivatives and the synthesis of block polymers through a controlled radical polymerisation mediated by various thiocarbonylthio group containing agents (RAFT and MADIX processes).

Abstract
A two-step preparation of 2,3-trans disubstituted tetrahydrofuran derivatives is reported from S-alkyl dithiocarbonates. The study of the group transfer reaction from xanthates and alkenes afforded intermediate S-alkyl dithiocarbonates. From 2,3-dihydrofuran derivatives, the displacement of the resulting anomeric xanthates with various nucleophiles in the presence of Lewis acid allowed the formation of new carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds. This strategy was illustrated by a two-step synthesis of a precursor of modified 2'-beta-C-branched nucleoside analogues.

Abstract
Trifluoromethylated nitrogen-containing molecules have been shown to have important biological effects and their synthesis is in the focus of the pharmaceutical industry. In the last few years, simple nitrogen derivatives of fluoral, i.e. imines, acetals and oxazolidines, have emerged as powerful building blocks to synthesize these target molecules and relevant precursors. This review summarizes the chemistry of these "N-derivatives of fluoral", with special highlight on the syntheses of peptidomimetic units (amino alcohols, amino acids...) and heterocycles (piperidines, beta-lactams...).
