Abstract
Density functional theory is used to study geometric, energetic, and electronic properties of metal-ligand bonds in a series of group-11 metal complexes and ligand-protected metal clusters. We study complexes as the forms of M-L (L = SCH3, SC8H9, PPh3, NHCMe, NHCEt, NHCiPr, NHCBn, CCMe, CCPh) and L1-M-L2 (L1 = NHCBn, PPh3, and L2 = CCPh). Furthermore, we study clusters denoted as [M13L6Br6]- (L = PPh3, NHCMe, NHCEt, NHCiPr, NHCBn). The systems were studied at the standard GGA level using the PBE functional and including vdW corrections via BEEF-vdW. Generally, Au has the highest binding energies, followed by Cu and Ag. PBE and BEEF-vdW functionals show the order Ag-L > Au-L > Cu-L for bond lengths in both M-L complexes and metal clusters. In clusters, the smallest side group (CH3) in NHCs leads to the largest binding energy whereas no significant variations are seen concerning different side groups of NHC in M-L complexes. By analyzing the projected density of states and molecular orbitals in complexes and clusters, the M-thiolate bonds were shown to have σ and π bond characteristics whereas phosphines and carbenes were creating σ bonds to the transition metals. Interestingly, this analysis revealed divergent behavior for M-alkynyl complexes: while the CCMe group displayed both σ and π bonding features, the CCPh ligand was found to possess only σ bond properties in direct head-to-head binding configuration. Moreover, synergetic effects increase the average binding strength to the metal atom significantly in complexes of two different ligands and underline the potential of adding Cu to synthesize structurally richer cluster systems. This study helps in understanding the effects of different ligands on the stability of M-L complexes and clusters and suggests that PPh3 and NHCs-protected Cu clusters are most stable after Au clusters.

Abstract
Thiele, Chichibabin and Müller hydrocarbons are considered as classical Kekulé diradicaloids. Herein we report the synthesis and characterization of acyclic diaminocarbene (ADC)-based Thiele, Chichibabin, and Müller hydrocarbons. The calculated singlet–triplet energy gaps are ΔES–T = −27.96, −3.70, −0.37 kcal mol−1, respectively, and gradually decrease with the increasing length of the π-conjugated spacer (p-phenylene vs. p,p′-biphenylene vs. p,p′′-terphenylene) between the two ADC-scaffolds. In agreement with the calculations, we also experimentally observed the enhancement of paramagnetic diradical character as a function of the length of the π-conjugated spacer. ADC-based Thiele's hydrocarbon is EPR silent and exhibits very well resolved NMR spectra, whereas ADC-based Müller's hydrocarbon displays EPR signals and featureless NMR spectra at room temperature. The spacer also has a strong influence on the UV-Vis-NIR spectra of these compounds. Considering that our methodology is modular, these results provide a convenient platform for the synthesis of an electronically modified new class of carbon-centered Kekulé diradicaloids. We report the synthesis of acyclic diaminocarbene (ADC)-scaffold based Thiele, Chichibabin, and Müller hydrocarbons. Studies support that the singlet-triplet energy gap depends on the π-conjugated spacer between the ADC scaffolds.![]()

Abstract
An allenylidene Au(i) catalyst based on triazolylidene moieties, featuring the high σ-donating ability (comparable to that of other NHC ligands) and largely enhanced π-accepting ability of its ligand, was developed for the first time. As compared with the extant gold complexes such as IPrAuCl, Ph3PAuCl and (PhO)3PAuCl, these allenylidene Au(i) catalysts exhibited superior catalytic activities in the gold-catalyzed Nazarov reaction of aryl enones.

Abstract
A series of imidazolium salts precursors for N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) featuring fluoroaryl substituents have been prepared along with their selenides and rhodium complexes. Tests of the catalytic activity of the [Rh(cod)Cl(NHC)] complexes in the transfer hydrogenation of acetophenone with iPrOH shows that the rhodium complexes bearing fluorinated NHCs are better than their non-fluorinated counterparts. The order of activity being 4-F-C6H4 < 2,4-F2-C6H3 < 2,4,5-F3-C6H2 < 2,6-F2-C6H3 < 2,4,6-F3-C6H2. This order of reactivity is consistent with a number of simple NMR measures of the electronic properties of these systems, including 1JCH of the NHC·HBF4 salts, δ(77Se) of the NHC selenides and 1JRh-C and δ(13Ccarbene) of the [Rh(cod)Cl(NHC)] complexes.

Abstract
A series of gold(I) and gold(III) complexes containing bulky bis-N,N'-(9-alkylfluorenyl) heterocyclic carbene (R F-NHC) ligands have been prepared in high yields from appropriate imidazolinium, imidazolium and benzimidazolium salts. In all complexes, the carbene ligand provides high steric protection of the Au-X bond trans to the carbenic C atom. Irrespective of the metal oxidation state, the complexes showed high efficiency in a tandem 3,3-rearrangement/Nazarov reaction of an enynyl acetate. One of the AuIII complexes, [AuCl3 (R F-NHC)], was further found to be suitable for the efficient cyclisation of a propargylcarboxamide. Furthermore, unlike related NHC-gold(I) complexes based on conventional bulky N-heterocyclic carbenes (notably, 1,3-bis-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene (IPr), 1,3-bis-(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene (IMes) and 1,3-(bis-tert-butyl)imidazol-2-ylidene (ItBu)), the studied [AuI Cl(R F-NHC)] complexes catalysed the conversion of a 1,6-enyne in the presence of indole into a single product; this arises from the embracing character of the ligand, which prevents indole addition on one of the catalytic intermediates. A structure/selectivity relationship was established for all carbenes tested that took into account percent buried volumes and topographic steric maps. The results illustrate the high potential of confining NHCs in organic synthesis.

Abstract
The gold-catalyzed enantioselective hydroazidation and hydroamination reactions of allenes are presented herein. ADC gold(I) catalysts derived from BINAM were critical for achieving high levels of enantioselectivity in both transformations. The sense of enantioinduction is reversed for the two different nucleophiles, allowing access to both enantiomers of the corresponding allylic amines using the same catalyst enantiomer.

Abstract
Theoretical investigations predict that the singlet states of ylide-substituted remote carbenes are significantly stable and comparable to those of experimentally known NHCs. They are also found to be strongly σ-donating in nature as evident from an evaluation of the carbonyl stretching frequencies (νCO ) of their complexes with the [Rh(CO)2 Cl] fragment. NICS and QTAIM based bond magnetizability calculations indicate the presence of cyclic electron delocalization in majority of the molecules. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract
The effect of ylide substitution at the α position to the carbene carbon (Cc ) atom on the stability and σ-donating ability of a number of cyclic carbenes has been studied theoretically. The stabilities of all of the carbenes were investigated from an evaluation of their singlet-triplet energy gaps and stabilization energies. All carbenes were found to have a stable singlet state. The energy of the σ-symmetric lone-pair orbital at the Cc atom increases as a result of the introduction of ylide centers near to the Cc atom. This indicates an enhanced σ-donating ability of the ylide-containing carbenes. The calculated carbonyl-stretching frequencies of the corresponding rhodium complexes, proton affinities, and nucleophilicity index values correlate well with the σ basicity of the carbenes.

Abstract
ADC borane adducts RBX2·ADC (R = Mes, Dur; X = Cl, Br; ADC = :C(NiPr2)2) have been prepared and reduced by KC8 to afford air stable 1,2-azaboretidines with high selectivity.
Reaction of the acyclic (diamino)carbene (ADC) :C(NiPr2)2 (1) with different dihaloboranes of the type RBX2 (R = Mes, Dur; X = Cl, Br) smoothly afforded a novel class of ADC-stabilized borane adducts. For MesBBr2 however, the reaction did not stop at the adduct level, but an uncommon rearrangement process occurred, which eventually resulted in the formation of a 5-membered boracycle after elimination of mesitylene. Chemical reduction of the ADC borane adducts by KC8 selectively yielded air stable 1,2-azaboretidines. Detailed DFT studies suggest a reduction mechanism involving a highly reactive borylene intermediate, which is converted into the boracycles via a rearrangement/C–H activation sequence.

Abstract
The "Alder carbene" (iPr(2)N)(2)C undergoes a β-fragmentation in solution already at room temperature, affording propene and N,N,N'-triisopropylformamidine. This stands in sharp contrast to the indefinite stability previously claimed for this iconic compound.
