Abstract
BN-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have attracted numerous attentions because of their fascinating optical and electronic properties. In this work, a series of electron-donor (amine)- and -acceptor (borane)-functionalized BN-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were prepared to study the substituents' effect on the photophysical properties. As a result, the compound with both donor and acceptor, BN, exhibits both local emission (LE) and charge-transfer emission (CT) in polar solvents. Especially, the CT emission with a longer wavelength revealed a lifetime as long as millisecond time scale at room temperature, indicating typical phosphorescence characteristics. Low-temperature photoluminescent (PL) spectroscopy and a theoretical study were conducted to help to interpret this phenomenon, and it turned out to be the lowering of the S1 energy level of BN which makes the intersystem crossing favorable. Furthermore, fluoride anion titration experiments exhibit the application potential of the dual-emission phenomenon of BN for ratiometric sensory materials.

Abstract
9,10-Anthrylene-bridged triarylborane-triarylamine donor-acceptor compounds were prepared to examine the influence of the bulky π-bridge on the electronic and photophysical properties of the compounds, with the aim of realizing their solid-state emission. The intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) absorption and emission between the vacant p orbital on the boron center, p(B), and occupied p orbital on the nitrogen center, p(N), through the π orbital of the anthrylene, π(anthrylene), were observed, and it was demonstrated that the HOMO-LUMO gap decreased with increasing number of introduced anthrylene units because of the effective lowering of LUMO originating from the p(B)-π(anthrylene) orbital interaction. The compounds exhibited solid-state emission with emission maxima at 560 nm and 643 nm, respectively, in the yellow to red region, with the corresponding absolute solid-state quantum yield of 18 % and 31 %, as a result of the combination of the highly congested structure originating from the anthrylene π-bridge and the introduction of bulky tert-butyl protecting groups.

Abstract
Four new dyes that derive from borylated arylisoquinolines were prepared, containing a third aryl residue (naphthyl, 4-methoxynaphthyl, pyrenyl or anthryl) that is linked via an additional stereogenic axis. The triaryl cores were synthesized by Suzuki couplings and then transformed into boronic acid esters by employing an Ir(I)-catalyzed reaction. The chromophores show dual emission behavior, where the long-wavelength emission band can reach maxima close to 600 nm in polar solvents. The fluorescence quantum yields of the dyes are generally in the range of 0.2-0.4, reaching in some cases values as high as 0.5-0.6. Laser-flash photolysis provided evidence for the existence of excited triplet states. The dyes form fluoroboronate complexes with fluoride anions, leading to the observation of the quenching of the long-wavelength emission band and ratiometric response by the build-up of a hypsochromically shifted emission signal.

Abstract
A novel trisarylborane-Bi(III) complex, tris(4-(dimesitylboryl)phenyl)bismuthine [Bi(PhBMes2 )3 ], in which (Ph = phenyl, and Mes = mesityl), was synthesized via the reaction of bismuth (III) chloride (BiCl3 ) with three equivalents of lithiated (4-bromophenyl)- dimesitylborane [BrPhBMes2 ]. The new trisarylbismuthine was characterized by elemental analysis, ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, and NMR (1 H and 13 C) spectroscopy. The molecular structure of Bi(PhBMes2 )3 in the solid state was determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, which showed short intermolecular C-H···H-C contact. The complex is a fluorescent emitter (λmax = 395 nm) at room temperature and a phosphorescent emitter (λmax = 423 nm) at 77 K, which displayed a long lifetime of 495 ms. The UV-vis transitions were investigated using density function theory (DFT) and time-dependent (TD)-DFT calculations. Natural bond orbital analysis showed that the bismuth (III) center was mainly Lewis acidic in nature.

Abstract
Pyrazinoindole-based Lewis-acid/base assemblies are prepared through the use of regioselective formal [3 + 3] cycloaddition reactions, and their intriguing photophysical properties are described. The assemblies exhibit strong emissions in THF solution, which are attributed to through-space intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) transitions between the branched Lewis-acid/base moieties. Furthermore, these show ratiometric color-change responses in PL titration experiments, which give rise to new colors through turn-on emissions ascribable to ICT transitions that alternate between the pyrazinoindole units and each triarylboryl or amino moiety, a consequence of the binding of the fluoride or acid. Pieces of filter paper covered by these assemblies exhibited blue-shifted color changes when immersed in aqueous acidic solutions, suggesting that these are promising candidate indicators that detect acid through emissive color. Computational data for these assemblies and their corresponding adducts verify the existence of ICT transitions that alternate through fluoride or acid binding.

Abstract
Three new triarylborane conjugated dicyanovinyl chromophores (Mes2B-π-donor-DCV); donor: N-methyldiphenylamine () and triphenylamine ( and [with two BMes2 substitutions]) of type A-D-A (acceptor-donor-acceptor) are reported. Compounds exhibit intense charge transfer (CT) absorption bands in the visible region. These absorption peaks are combination CT bands of the amine donor to both the BMes2 and DCV units. This inference was supported by theoretical studies. Compound shows weak fluorescence compared to and . The discrimination of fluoride and cyanide ions is essential in the case of triarylborane (TAB) based anion sensors as a similar response is given towards both the anions. Anion binding studies of , and showed that fluoride ions bind selectively to the boron centre and block the corresponding CT transition (donor to BMes2) leaving the other CT transition to be red shifted. On the other hand, cyanide ions bind with both the receptor sites and stop both the CT transition processes and hence a different colorimetric response was noted. The binding of F(-)/CN(-) induces colour changes in the visible region of the electronic spectra of and , which allows for the naked-eye detection of F(-) and CN(-) ions. The anion binding mechanisms are established using NMR titration experiments.

Abstract
We demonstrate that the rates for long-range electron transfer can be controlled actively by tight anion binding to a rigid rod-like molecular bridge. Electron transfer from a triarylamine donor to a photoexcited Ru(bpy)32+ acceptor (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) across a 2,5-diboryl-1,4-phenylene bridge occurs within less than 10 ns in CH2Cl2 at 22 °C. Fluoride anions bind with high affinity to the organoboron bridge due to strong Lewis base/Lewis acid interactions, and this alters the electronic structure of the bridge drastically. Consequently, a large tunneling barrier is imposed on photoinduced electron transfer from the triarylamine to the Ru(bpy)32+ complex and hence this process occurs more than two orders of magnitude more slowly, despite the fact that its driving force is essentially unaffected by fluoride addition. Electron transfer rates in proteins could potentially be regulated via a similar fundamental principle, because interactions between charged amino acid side chains and counter-ions can modulate electronic couplings between distant redox partners. In artificial donor-bridge-acceptor compounds, external stimuli have been employed frequently to control electron transfer rates, but the approach of exploiting strong Lewis acid/Lewis base interactions to regulate the tunneling barrier height imposed by a rigid rod-like molecular bridge is conceptually novel and broadly applicable, because it is largely independent of the donor and the acceptor, and because the effect is not based on a change of the driving-force for electron transfer. The principle demonstrated here can potentially be used to switch between conducting and insulating states of molecular wires between electrodes.

Abstract
![]()
Luminescent materials are important
for imaging and sensing. Aromatic
difluoroboron β-diketonate complexes (BF2bdks) are
classic fluorescent molecules that have been explored as photochemical
reagents, two-photon dyes, and oxygen sensors. A series of BF2bdks with naphthyl and phenyl groups was synthesized, and
photophysical properties were investigated in both methylene chloride
and poly(lactic acid) (PLA). Polymer molecular weight and dye attachment
site along with bromide heavy atom placement were varied to tune optical
properties of dye–PLA materials. Systems without heavy atoms
have long phosphorescence lifetimes, which is useful for lifetime-based
oxygen sensing. Bromine substitution on the naphthyl ring resulted
in intense, clearly distinguishable fluorescence and phosphorescence
peaks important for ratiometric oxygen sensing and imaging.

Abstract
The preparation of pH-switchable fluorescent borylated arylisoquinoline dyes via a flexible iridium-catalyzed route is reported. The obtained dyes feature aromatic amino substitution and lateral aliphatic amino groups as electron donors. The photophysical properties of the internal charge transfer dyes were studied, which was complemented by density functional theory calculations. Appreciable fluorescence quantum yields (Φf up to ca. 0.4) and characteristic spectral fingerprints in the green to red emission range were observed. The fluorescence modulation upon multiple and orthogonal protonation with triflic acid was studied and led to the interpretation of multilevel switching including off-on-off, ternary, and quaternary responses.

Abstract
The synthesis, characterization and ion binding properties of a new ditopic ratiometric receptor (1), based on 2-(4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazol-2-yl)phenol and crown ether moieties, have been described. The ditopic ratiometric receptor has been studied in sensing both F(-) and Zn(2+) ions, exhibiting different fluorescent colour changes from cyan green to blue/black observable by the naked eye under UV-light. The addition of Zn(2+) to the solution of 1 induced the formation of a 2 : 2 ligand-metal complex 1-Zn(2+), which displays a remarkable blue shift of the emission maxima of 1 from 455 nm to 400 nm due to the inhibition of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) mechanism. The sensing processes were monitored by fluorescence/absorption titrations, and further confirmed by Job's plot and (1)H NMR titrations. The crystal structure of 1-Zn(2+) reveals that 1 binds Zn(2+) in four-coordinated modes. Furthermore, 1 is cell permeable and may be applied to detect trace Zn(2+) and F(-) during the development of a living organism.

Abstract
The targeted hydrolysis of the 9,10-dihydro-9,10-diboraanthracene adduct (Me(2)S)HB(C(6)H(4))(2)BH(SMe(2)) (1) with 0.5 equiv of H(2)O leads to formation of the borinic acid anhydride [(Me(2)S)HB(C(6)H(4))(2)B](2)O (2) and thereby provides access to the field of unsymmetrically substituted 9,10-dihydro-9,10-diboraanthracenes. Compound 2 reacts with tBuC≡CH to give the corresponding vinyl derivative in an essentially quantitative conversion. Subsequent cleavage of the B-O-B bridge by LiAlH(4) with formation of hydridoborate functionalities is possible but is accompanied by partial B-C(vinyl) bond degradation. This situation changes when the related mesityl derivative [MesB(C(6)H(4))(2)B](2)O (7) is employed, which can be synthesized from BrB(C(6)H(4))(2)BBr (6) by treatment with 1 equiv of MesMgBr and subsequent hydrolysis. The reaction of 7 with LiAlH(4) in tetrahydrofuran (THF) furnishes Li[MesB(C(6)H(4))(2)BH(2)] (8); hydride elimination with Me(3)SiCl leads to formation of the THF adduct MesB(C(6)H(4))(2)BH(THF) (9·THF). Alternatively, 7 can be transformed into the bromoborane MesB(C(6)H(4))(2)BBr (10) by treatment with BBr(3). A Br/H-exchange reaction between 10 and Et(3)SiH yields the donor-free borane MesB(C(6)H(4))(2)BH (9), which forms B-H-B bridged dimers (9)(2) in the solid state. The vinyl borane MesB(C(6)H(4))(2)BC(H)=C(H)Mes (14) is accessible from MesC≡CH and either 9·THF or 9. Compared with the related compound Mes(2)BC(H)=C(H)Mes, the electronic absorption and emission spectra of 14 reveal bathochromic shifts of Δλ(abs)=17 nm and Δλ(em)=74 nm, which can be attributed to the rigid, fully delocalized π framework of the [MesB(C(6)H(4))(2)B] chromophore.

Abstract
A propeller-shaped boron-nitrogen compound (NB(3)) with three binding sites for fluoride anions was synthesized and investigated by optical absorption, luminescence, and ((1)H, (11)B, (13)C, (19)F) NMR spectroscopy. Binding of fluoride in dichloromethane solution occurs in three clearly identifiable steps and leads to stepwise blocking of the three initially present nitrogen-to-boron charge transfer pathways. As a consequence, the initially bright blue charge transfer emission is red-shifted and decreases in intensity, until it is quenched completely in presence of large fluoride excess. Fluoride binding constants were determined from global fits to optical absorption and luminescence titration data and were found to be K(a1) = 4 × 10(7) M(-1), K(a2) = 2.5 × 10(6) M(-1), and K(a3) = 3.2 × 10(4) M(-1) in room temperature dichloromethane solution. Complexation of fluoride to a given dimesitylboryl site increases the electron density at the central nitrogen atom of NB(3), and this leads to red shifts of the remaining nitrogen-to-boron charge transfer transitions involving yet unfluorinated dimesitylboryl groups.
