Abstract
In the realm of organic synthesis, direct C-H alkynylation with arylacetylenes has remained a daunting challenge due to competing annulations or alkenylation. Addressing this long-standing issue, herein we demonstrate the merging of copper and photocatalysis to achieve the elusive C-H alkynylation of benzamides using arylacetylenes or arylpropiolic acids. Unlike conventional copper-mediated C-H activations, our protocol circumvents the need for high temperatures and stoichiometric amounts of copper salts or metal/non-metal oxidants. The versatility of the developed dual copper photoredox system is underscored by performing other diverse C-H functionalizations such as amination, selenylation, arylation, sulfonylation, and nitration under slightly modified conditions.

Abstract
We have disclosed a novel metal-free tandem cyclization reaction for the synthesis of 3-methyleneisoindolin-1-ones starting from ester-functionalized aziridines. This strategy can be effectively promoted by DBU and carboxylic acids. Mechanistically, it involves sequential ring opening of aziridines with carboxylic acids, lactamization, and elimination of carboxylic acids.

Abstract
Over the past decade, numerous reports have focused on the development and applications of Cu-mediated C-H functionalization reactions; however, to date, little is known about the Cu intermediates involved in these transformations. This paper details the observation and characterization of CuII and CuIII intermediates in aminoquinoline-directed C(sp2)-H functionalization of a fluoroarene substrate. An initial C(sp2)-H activation at CuII occurs at room temperature to afford an isolable anionic cyclometalated CuII complex. This complex undergoes single-electron oxidation with ferrocenium or AgI salts under mild conditions (5 min at room temperature) to afford C(sp2)-C(sp2) or C(sp2)-NO2 coupling products. Spectroscopic studies implicate the formation of a transient diamagnetic CuIII-σ-aryl intermediate that undergoes either (i) a second C(sp2)-H activation at CuIII followed by C-C bond-forming reductive elimination or (ii) reaction with a NO2- nucleophile and C(sp2)-NO2 coupling.

Divergent regioselective Heck-type reaction of unactivated alkenes and N-fluoro-sulfonamides. Nat Commun 2022; 13:6297. Abstract
The control of regioselectivity in Heck-type reaction of unactivated alkenes represents a longstanding challenge due to several detachable hydrogens in β–H elimination step, which generally afford either one specific regioisomer or a mixture. Herein, a copper-catalyzed intermolecular Heck-type reaction of unactivated alkenes and N-fluoro-sulfonamides with divergent regioselectivities is reported. The complete switch of regioselectivity mainly depends on the choice of different additives. Employment of alcohol solvent gives access to vinyl products, while the addition of carboxylate leads to the formation of allylic products. In addition, exclusion of these two promoting factors results in β-lactams via a C–N reductive elimination. This protocol shows a broad substrate scope for both alkenes and structurally diverse N-fluoro-sulfonamides, producing the corresponding products with excellent regio- and stereoselectivities. Further control experiments and DFT calculations provide in-depth insights into the reaction mechanism, highlighting the distinct effect of the additives on a bidentate auxiliary-stabilized Cu(III) intermediate. The control of regioselectivity in Heck-type reactions of unactivated alkenes is challenging. Here, the authors realize regiodivergent Heck-type reactions of unactivated alkenes and N-fluoro-sulfonamides.

Abstract
The Rh-catalyzed ortho-C(sp2 )-H functionalization of 8-aminoquinoline-derived benzamides with aliphatic acyl fluorides generated in situ from the corresponding acids has been developed. This reaction initiated with 8-aminoquinoline-directed ortho-C(sp2 )-H acylation, which was accompanied by subsequent intramolecular nucleophilic acyl substitution of amide group to produce alkylidene phthalides This approach exhibits high stereo-selectivity for Z-isomer products, and tolerates a variety of functional groups as well as aliphatic carboxylic acids with diverse structural scaffolds.

Abstract
The efficient copper-mediated oxidative C-H alkynylation of benzhydrazides was accomplished with terminal alkynes. Thus, a heteroaromatic removable N-2-pyridylhydrazide allowed for domino C-H/N-H functionalization. The approach featured remarkable functional group compatibility and ample substrate scope. Thereby, highly functionalized aromatic and heteroaromatic isoindolin-1-ones were accessed with high efficacy with rate-limiting C-H cleavage.

Abstract
An unprecedented copper-catalyzed C-H monoamination of ferrocenes directed by an 8-aminoquinoline amide directing group is described. This reaction proceeds in the presence of a catalytic amount of copper catalyst with both cyclic and acyclic amines to afford the various aminoferrocenes. The C-H amination of ortho-substituted ferroceneamides was also achieved, enabling rapid access to multisubstituted ferrocenes that are useful for developing new functional molecules.

Abstract
Chelation-assisted C-H bond and alkene functionalization using bidentate directing groups offers an elegant and versatile approach to overcome regiocontrol issues by allowing the catalyst to come into close proximity with the targeted sites. In this personal account, we highlight our recent works in developing regio- and stereocontrolled functionalizations through transition-metal catalysis enabled by bidentate directing groups. We classify our results into two categories: (1) regioselective alkene functionalization using bidentate directing groups, and (2) asymmetric C-H functionalization using chiral bidentate directing groups. Furthermore, density functional theory studies to elucidate the origin of the regio- and stereoselectivity exerted by bidentate directing groups are discussed.

Abstract
The use of directing groups allows high levels of selectivity to be achieved in transition metal-catalyzed transformations. Efficient removal of these auxiliaries after successful functionalization, however, can be very challenging. This review provides a critical overview of strategies used for removal of Daugulis' 8-aminoquinoline (2005-2020), one of the most widely used N,N-bidentate directing groups. The limitations of these strategies are discussed and alternative approaches are suggested for challenging substrates. Our aim is to provide a comprehensive end-users' guide for chemists in academia and industry who want to harness the synthetic power of directing groups-and be able to remove them from their final products.

Abstract
A direct, one-pot conversion of 2'-haloacetophenones to 3-methyleneisoindolin-1-one scaffolds using CuCN as the sole reagent without the need for moisture-free or anaerobic conditions is reported. This serendipitously discovered transformation with a broad substrate scope provides a significantly different route towards these important scaffolds. The scope of the method has also been further extended towards the synthesis of three special scaffolds, which are analogous to various bio-active drugs.

Abstract
The development of an efficient method for the synthesis of polysubstituted isoindolinones from 1,3-dicarbonyl Ugi-4CR adducts, employing an aromatic radical cyclization process promoted by tetrabutylammonium persulfate and 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidine 1-oxyl (TEMPO), is described. The protocol allowed the construction of a library of isoindolinones bearing a congested carbon in good to excellent yields under mild conditions and in short reaction times.

Abstract
We report herein a mild procedure for the copper-catalyzed oxidative cross-coupling of electron-deficient polyfluorophenylboronate esters with terminal alkynes. This method displays good functional group tolerance and broad substrate scope, generating cross-coupled alkynyl(fluoro)arene products in moderate to excellent yields. Thus, it represents a simple alternative to the conventional Sonogashira reaction.

Abstract
During the past decades, synthetic organic chemistry discovered that directing group assisted C-H activation is a key tool for the expedient and siteselective construction of C-C bonds. Among the various directing group strategies, bidentate directing groups are now recognized as one of the most efficient devices for the selective functionalization of certain positions due to fact that its metal center permits fine, tunable, and reversible coordination. The family of bidentate directing groups permit various types of assistance to be achieved, such as N,N-dentate, N,O-dentate, and N,S-dentate auxiliaries, which are categorized based on the coordination site. In this review, we broadly discuss various C-H bond functionalization reactions for the formation of C-C bonds with the aid of bidentate directing groups.

Abstract
A copper-catalyzed 8-aminoquinoline-directed oxidative cross-coupling of the C-H bond of ferrocene with sodium arylsulfinates has been achieved. The robust copper catalyst tolerates a range of methyl, tert-butyl, bromo, chloro, iodo and nitro functional groups in the phenyl ring, and set the stage for the synthesis of substituted ferrocene sulfones. Furthermore, X-ray crystal structure study on several ferrocenyl sulfones reveals the tetrahedral geometry around sulfur; interestingly, the O-S-O angle is larger than the electropositive substituent C-S-C angle which could be explained by Bent's rule. Further, unusual intramolecular O(S)⋅⋅⋅N(amide) short contacts (2.925-3) and O(S)⋅⋅⋅C=O were also noticed in ferrocenyl sulfones.

Abstract
Quinazolinones have broad applications in the biological, pharmaceutical and material fields. Studies on the synthesis of these compounds are therefore widely conducted. Herein, a novel and highly efficient copper-mediated tandem C(sp2)-H amination and annulation of benzamides and amidines for the synthesis of quinazolin-4(1H)-ones is proposed. This synthetic route can be useful for the construction of quinazolin-4(1H)-one frameworks.

Abstract
An efficient Cu(II)-catalyzed and tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB)-promoted strategy for highly regioselective and chemoselective C(sp3)-H acyloxylation of aliphatic amides is described. Acyloxylation occurs selectively at the β position with a broad substrate scope of carboxylic acids and aliphatic amides and good functional group compatibility. Notably, the competing reaction of intramolecular dehydrogenative amidation and intermolecular acyloxylation could be efficiently controlled by the amount of copper salt and the addition of TBAB. The intramolecular dehydrogenative amidation product was obtained in high yield when the amount of copper salts was increased. However, when TBAB was used as an additive, a preference for acyloxylation over intramolecular amidation was observed and the acyloxylated products were obtained in good yield. Preliminary studies were carried out to gain insights into the mechanism.

Abstract
C-H activation has surfaced as an increasingly powerful tool for molecular sciences, with notable applications to material sciences, crop protection, drug discovery, and pharmaceutical industries, among others. Despite major advances, the vast majority of these C-H functionalizations required precious 4d or 5d transition metal catalysts. Given the cost-effective and sustainable nature of earth-abundant first row transition metals, the development of less toxic, inexpensive 3d metal catalysts for C-H activation has gained considerable recent momentum as a significantly more environmentally-benign and economically-attractive alternative. Herein, we provide a comprehensive overview on first row transition metal catalysts for C-H activation until summer 2018.
