Abstract
The term "C-H functionalisation" incorporates C-H activation followed by its transformation. In a single line, this can be defined as the conversion of carbon-hydrogen bonds into carbon-carbon or carbon-heteroatom bonds. The catalytic functionalisation of C-H bonds using transition metals has emerged as an atom-economical technique to engender new bonds without activated precursors which can be considered as a major drawback while attempting large-scale synthesis. Replacing the transition-metal-catalysed approach with a metal-free strategy significantly offers an alternative route that is not only inexpensive but also environmentally benign to functionalize C-H bonds. Recently metal free synthetic approaches have been flourishing to functionalize C-H bonds, motivated by the search for greener, cost-effective, and non-toxic catalysts. In this review, we will highlight the comprehensive and up-to-date discussion on recent examples of ground-breaking research on green and sustainable metal-free C-H bond functionalisation.

Abstract
We developed the radical cyclization/addition of alkynylphosphine oxides with easily available cycloalkanes, alcohols, and ethers using a visible-light and environmentally friendly synthetic strategy in the absence of photocatalyst at room temperature. This mild and metal- and base-free reaction provided a structurally varied set of significant benzo[b]phosphole oxides through sequential C-H functionalization in an atom-economical manner.

Abstract
In this review, we discussed about the synthetic developments in the field of Fe-catalysis for the formation of - bonds through the coupling of alkynes and alcohols, for the period of 13 years (2008-2020). These strategies fulfil important Green Chemistry principles, as they are highly atom economic (up to 100 %), no toxic by-products (only water), employs highly abundant and low toxic alcohols (no need for any pre-functionalization hence step economy) and cheaper Fe-catalysts. Having these advantages, one can predict that in the coming years a large number of fascinating new iron-catalyzed reactions will be developed for the organic synthesis. We hope that this review article will be highly useful for the synthetic community to design and develop new Fe-catalyzed coupling reactions and keeps the content in the right prospect.

Abstract
Although the 2-position-selective decarboxylative coupling or addition of arylpropiolic acids with cyclic ethers has been intensively investigated, selective functionalization of arylpropiolic acids at the 3-position is still a big challenge. Herein, an intriguing and mild method for visible light induced regioselective addition of arylpropiolic acids by attacking exclusively at the 3-position with cyclic/acyclic ethers was developed. A variety of 3,3-bis-substituted acrylic acids were successfully obtained in moderate to excellent yields. A plausible reaction mechanism involving an energy transfer induced radical addition in the presence of visible light and photocatalyst was proposed.

Abstract
The first metal-free and facile radical addition/cyclization of simple alcohols with diaryl(arylethynyl)phosphine oxides has been described with azobisisobutyronitrile as a radical initiator, affording an efficient and one-pot procedure to access a new class of hydroxymethyl benzo[b]phosphole oxides and 6H-indeno[2,1-b]phosphindole 5-oxides for potential application in organic materials via sequential C(sp3)-H/C(sp2)-H functionalization. The method employs easily accessible starting materials and is endowed with high regioselectivity and broad functional-group tolerance.

Abstract
Although carbon radicals generated from a variety of alcohol derivatives have proven valuable in coupling and addition reactions, the direct use of alcohols as synthetically useful radical sources is less known. In this report, benzylic alcohols are shown to be effective radical precursors for addition reactions to alkenes when treated with triphenylphosphine or piperidine with the catalyst ReIO2(PPh3)2 (I).

Abstract
A good regioselective, high atom-economical and transition-metal-free method for the synthesis of α-functionalized ether derivatives via the domino radical cyclization of 1,6-enynes is described. A series of α-functionalized ether derivatives could be easily obtained in good yields with wide functional group tolerance by using less toxic and inexpensive Cs2CO3 as the base. The control experiment results show that the reaction involves a radical process. This strategy provides a regioselective way toward the formation of dual C-C bonds in one step.

Abstract
Considering the synthetic value of introducing active alcoholic hydroxyl group, developing C-H functionalization of alcohols is of significance. Herein, we present a photochemical method that under visible light irradiation, selectfluor can effectively promote the oxidative cross-coupling between alcohols and heteroarenes without the external photocatalysis, achieving the selective α sp3 C-H arylation of alcohol, even in the presence of ether. The N-F activation of selectfluor under blue LEDs irradiation is evidenced by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) study, which is the key process for the oxidative activation of α sp3 C-H alcohols. The observed reactivity may have significant implications for chemical transformations.

Abstract
The ring-opening/cyclization of cyclopropane derivatives has drawn great attention in the past several decades. In this review, recent efforts in the development of oxidative radical ring-opening/cyclization of cyclopropane derivatives, including methylenecyclopropanes, cyclopropyl olefins and cyclopropanols, are described. We hope this review will be of sufficient interest for the scientific community to further advance the application of oxidative radical strategies in the ring-opening/cyclization of cyclopropane derivatives.

Abstract
A thiol-promoted site-specific addition of 1,3-dioxolane to imines through a radical chain process is described. This process represents a metal-free and redox-neutral way to convert inexpensive materials to a broad range of protected α-amino aldehydes in good to excellent yields using only a catalytic amount of radical precursor. Control experiments revealed that both the thiol and a small amount of oxygen from air are indispensable to the success of this reaction.

Abstract
Research and industrial interest in radical C-H activation/radical cross-coupling chemistry has continuously grown over the past few decades. These reactions offer fascinating and unconventional approaches toward connecting molecular fragments with high atom- and step-economy that are often complementary to traditional methods. Success in this area of research was made possible through the development of photocatalysis and first-row transition metal catalysis along with the use of peroxides as radical initiators. This Review provides a brief and concise overview of the current status and latest methodologies using radicals or radical cations as key intermediates produced via radical C-H activation. This Review includes radical addition, radical cascade cyclization, radical/radical cross-coupling, coupling of radicals with M-R groups, and coupling of radical cations with nucleophiles (Nu).

Abstract
Radical involved transformations are now considered as extremely important processes in modern organic synthetic chemistry. According to the demand by atom-economic and sustainable chemistry, direct C(sp3)–H functionalization through radical oxidative coupling represents an appealing strategy for C–C bond formations. However, the selectivity control of reactive radical intermediates is still a great challenge in these transformations. Here we show a selective radical oxidative C(sp3)–H/C(sp)–H cross-coupling of unactivated alkanes with terminal alkynes by using a combined Cu/Ni/Ag catalytic system. It provides a new way to access substituted alkynes from readily available materials. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest that this reaction proceeds through a radical process and the C(sp3)–H bond cleavage is the rate-limiting step. This study may have significant implications for controlling selective C–C bond formation of reactive radical intermediates by using multimetallic catalytic systems. Cross coupling via the activation of two carbon-hydrogen bonds avoids the need for organometallic coupling partners and associated waste. Here, the authors report a radical process that allows selective coupling between alkynes and non-activated C(sp3)-H groups via a multimetallic catalytic system.

Abstract
A first free-radical triggered site-specific cross dehydrogenative coupling reaction of heterocycles with simple nitriles is developed. It allows efficient and facile access to various C-2 cyanoalkylated furans, thiophenes, indoles, and pyrroles. The extremely high selectivities in this case indicate that functionalization of an inert C–H bond could be well-controlled by radical initiation.
