Interannular Conjugation in New Iron(II) 5-Aryl Tetrazolate Complexes

pH-Switchability and Second-Order Nonlinear Optical Properties of Monocyclopentadienylruthenium(II)/iron(II) Tetrazoles/Tetrazolates: Synthesis, Characterization, and Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory Calculations

Tetrazole/tetrazolate monocyclopentadienyliron(II) and ruthenium(II) compounds of general formulas [(η⁵-C₅H₅)M(dppe)(N₄(H)CC₆H₄NO₂)][PF₆]/[(η⁵-C₅H₅)M(dppe)(N₄CC₆H₄NO₂)] were investigated for their pH-switching second-order nonlinear optical (SONLO) properties. Compounds [(η⁵-C₅H₅)M(dppe)(N₄CC₆H₄NO₂)] (M = Fe, Ru) and compound [(η⁵-C₅H₅)Ru(dppe)(N₄(H)CC₆H₄NO₂)][PF₆] were fully characterized by (¹H-, ¹³C-, ³¹P-) NMR, cyclic voltammetry, and elemental analysis, and compounds [(η⁵-C₅H₅)Fe(dppe)(N₄CC₆H₄NO₂)] and [(η⁵-C₅H₅)Ru(dppe)(N₄(H)CC₆H₄NO₂)][PF₆] were further characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction; the synthesis of [(η⁵-C₅H₅)Fe(dppe)(N₄(H)CC₆H₄NO₂)][PF₆] was unsuccessful. Time-dependent density functional theory calculations were performed using PBE0 and CAM-B3LYP functionals to evaluate the first hyperpolarizability (β_tot) of the tetrazole/tetrazolate complexes and for a detailed analysis of the experimental data. Both functionals predict (i) high first hyperpolarizabilities for the tetrazolate complexes [(η⁵-C₅H₅)M(dppe)(N₄CC₆H₄NO₂)], with β_tot[Ru] ≈ 1.2β_tot[Fe], and (ii) a 3-fold reduction in β_tot[Ru] upon protonation, in complex [(η⁵-C₅H₅)Ru(dppe)(N₄(H)CC₆H₄NO₂)]⁺, forecasting [(η⁵-C₅H₅)Ru(dppe)(N₄CC₆H₄NO₂)]/[(η⁵-C₅H₅)Ru(dppe)(N₄(H)CC₆H₄NO₂)]⁺ complexes as on/off, pH-switchable SONLO forms.

Polypyridyl ruthenium(II) complexes with tetrazolate-based chelating ligands. Synthesis, reactivity, and electrochemical and photophysical properties

In this contribution, we report the synthesis, the chemical and photophysical characterization, and the study of the reactivity toward electrophiles of two mononuclear complexes of the type [Ru(bpy)2L]+ (bpy is 2,2'-bipyridyl), in which L is represented by the deprotonated form of 2-(1,H-tetrazol-5-yl)pyridine (L1) or 2-(1,H-tetrazol-5-yl)pyrazine (L2). The 1H and 13C NMR experiments that were performed on complexes RuL1 and RuL2 allowed us to establish that the tetrazolate moiety is bonded to the metal center via the N-1 nitrogen, while the coplanar arrangement adopted by the coordinated ligand upon coordination and the consequent interannular conjugation effect accounts for the unexpectedly low field resonance of the tetrazole carbon. The 13C NMR spectroscopy is also of fundamental importance to determine the chemo- and regioselectivity of the addition of a methyl group to RuL1 and RuL2, which takes place at the N-3 nitrogen of the five-membered ring. All these features were confirmed by the X-ray diffraction structures of RuL1 and of the methylated compounds RuL1Me and RuL2Me. Relative to these latter complexes, the presence of a methyl moiety does not cause any distortion from coplanarity of the coordinated tetrazolates. The redox properties of the complexes were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and indicated a quite different behavior between the pyrazinyl-tetrazolate and the pyridyl-tetrazolate complexes as the consequence of the higher electron-withdrawing character of the pyrazine ring. The study of the photophysical properties of the complexes also shows a significant diversity between the luminescent RuL1 and the rather poorly emissive RuL2. Interestingly, the methylated compounds RuL1Me and RuL2Me display radiative excited-state decays with longer lifetimes than their precursors; this feature indicates that methylation is a useful reaction for the tuning of the light emission performances of similar tetrazolate complexes. The synthesis and the characterization of a novel dinuclear complex of type [(bpy)2Ru-L3-Ru(bpy)2]2+, Ru(L3)Ru, where L3 is the bis-anion derived from bis-2,3-(1,H-tetrazol-5-yl)pyrazine, is also reported.

A new family of ruthenium(II) polypyridine complexes bearing 5-aryltetrazolate ligands as systems for electrochemiluminescent devices

A new family of mono- and dinuclear ruthenium polypyridyl complexes containing 5-aryltetrazolate ligands such as the deprotonated form of 4-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)benzonitrile (4-TBNH) and bis(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)benzene (BTBH(2)) have been synthesized and thoroughly characterized. The reactivity of the mononuclear species toward different electrophiles such as H(+) and CH(3)(+) has been investigated, and the effects of the resulting regioselective electrophilic attacks on the electronic and structural properties of the tetrazolate ligand have been studied by NMR ((1)H, (13)C) spectroscopy and X-ray crystal structures. Absorption and emission spectroscopy, together with an electrochemical and UV-vis-NIR spectroelectrochemical investigation of the uncoordinated ligand and complexes, has been performed, highlighting a rather good luminescence efficiency and a poor bridge-mediated electronic communication between the metal centers of the dinuclear complexes. The electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) of the dinuclear species has been explored, and for one of these, an exceptionally high ECL efficiency has been observed, comparable to that of [Ru(bpy)(3)](2+), which is considered a standard in ECL studies.

Synthesis, structural characterization, and properties of chromium(iii) complexes containing amidinato ligands and η2-pyrazolato, η2-1,2,4-triazolato, or η1-tetrazolato ligands

Treatment of anhydrous chromium(III) chloride with 2 or 3 equivalents of 1,3-di-tert-butylacetamidinatolithium or 1,3-diisopropylacetamidinatolithium in tetrahydrofuran at ambient temperature afforded Cr(tBuNC(CH3)NtBu)2(Cl)(THF) and Cr(iPrNC(CH3)NiPr)3 in 78% and 65% yields, respectively. Treatment of Cr(tBuNC(CH3)NtBu)2(Cl)(THF) with the potassium salts derived from pyrazoles and 1,2,4-triazoles afforded Cr(tBuNC(CH3)NtBu)2(X), where X=3,5-disubstituted pyrazolato or 3,5-disubstituted 1,2,4-triazolato ligands, in 65-70% yields. X-Ray crystal structure analyses of Cr(tBuNC(CH3)NtBu)2(Me2pz) (Me2pz=3,5-dimethylpyrazolato) and Cr(tBuNC(CH3)NtBu)2(Me2trz) (Me2trz=3,5-dimethyl-1,2,4-triazolato) revealed eta2-coordination of the Me2pz and Me2trz ligands. Treatment of Cr(tBuNC(CH3)NtBu)2(Cl)(THF) with trifluoromethyltetrazolatosodium (NaCF3tetz) in the presence of 4-tert-butylpyridine afforded Cr(tBuNC(CH3)NtBu)2(CF3tetz)(4-tBupy) in 30% yield. An X-ray crystal structure determination showed eta1-coordination of the tetrazolato ligand through the 2-nitrogen atom. The complexes Cr(iPrNC(CH3)NiPr)3 and Cr(tBuNC(CH3)NtBu)2(X) are volatile and sublime with <1% residue between 120 and 165 degrees C at 0.05 Torr. In addition, these complexes are thermally stable at >300 degrees C under an inert atmosphere such as nitrogen or argon. Due to the good volatility and high thermal stability, these new compounds are promising precursors for the growth of chromium-containing thin films using atomic layer deposition.
