Abstract
Development of new second near-infrared (NIR-II, 1000-1700 nm) luminophores is highly desirable, and d8 square-planar metal complexes with NIR-II phosphorescence have been rarely reported. Herein, we explore an asymmetric coordination paradigm to achieve the first creation of NIR-II phosphorescent isocyanorhodium(i) zwitterions. They show a strong tendency for aggregation in solution, arising from close Rh(i)⋯Rh(i) contacts that are further intensified by π-π stacking interactions and the hydrophilic-hydrophobic effect. Based on such supramolecular aggregation, zwitterions 2 and 5 are found to yield NIR-II phosphorescence emissions centered at 1005 and 1120 (1210, shoulder) nm in methanol-water mixed solvents, respectively. These two bands show red shifts to 1070 and 1130 (1230, shoulder) nm in the corresponding polymer nanoparticles in water. The resulting polymer nanoparticles can brighten in vivo tumor issues in the NIR-II region with a long-circulating time. In view of the synthetic diversity established by the asymmetric coordination paradigm, this work provides an extraordinary opportunity to explore NIR-II luminophores.

Abstract
A new class of luminescent bis(bipyridyl) Ru(ii) pyridyl acyclic carbene complexes with environmentally-sensitive dimerization equilibrium have been developed. Owing to the involvement of the orbitals of the diaminocarbene ligand in the emissive excited state, the phosphorescence properties of these complexes are strongly affected by H-bonding interactions with various H-bonding donor/acceptor molecules. With the remarkable differences in the emission properties of the monomer, dimer, and H-bonded amine adducts together with the change of the dimerization equilibrium, these complexes can be used as luminescent gas sensors for humidity, ammonia, and amine vapors. With the responses to amines and humidity and the corresponding change in the luminescence properties, a proof-of-principle for binary optical data storage with a reversible concealment process has been described.

Abstract
Three new mononuclear copper(II) complexes, [Cu(L2)](2+) (1), [Cu(acac)(L)](+) (2), and [Cu(acac-Cl)(L)](+) (3) (L = 2-(4-pyridine)oxazo[4,5-f]1,10-phenanthroline (4-PDOP); acac = acetylacetone; acac-Cl = 3-chloroacetylacetone), have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, high resolution mass spectrometry (Q-TOF), and IR spectroscopy. Two of the complexes were structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. Their interactions with DNA were studied by UV-vis absorption and emission spectra, viscosity, thermal melting, DNA unwinding assay and CD spectroscopy. The nucleolytic cleavage activity of the compounds was carried out on double stranded pBR322 circular plasmid DNA by using a gel electrophoresis experiment in the presence and absence of an oxidant (H2O2). Active oxygen intermediates such as hydroxyl radicals and hydrogen peroxide generated in the presence of L and complexes 1-3 may act as active species for the DNA scission. The cytotoxicity of the complexes against HepG2 cancer cells was also studied.

Abstract
A novel naphthalene-2,3-diamine-2-salicylaldehyde (NS) ligand and its mononuclear copper(II) complex (CuNS) have been synthesized and structurally characterized. The UV–vis absorption and emission spectra of NS showed obvious changes on addition of Cu2+ solution. The interaction of the compounds with calf thymus DNA and G-quadruplex DNA were investigated by spectroscopic methods and thermal melting assay. The nucleolytic cleavage activity of the compounds was investigated on double-stranded circular pBR322 plasmid DNA and G-quadruplex DNA by electrophoretic mobility shift assay. The results show that CuNS has a greater ability to stabilize G-quadruplex DNA over calf-thymus DNA. The cytotoxicity of the compounds toward HpeG2 cancer cells was also studied, and they showed significant potential for antineoplastic effects.
