Diorgano-Gallium and -Indium Complexes Derived from Benzoazole Ligands: Synthesis, Characterization, Photoluminescence, and Computational Studies

Difluoroboron Complexes Based on Benzimidazole-Phenolates as Blue Emitters

Novel four-coordinated boron complexes (1-5) were synthesized via a reaction between BF3·CH3OH and benzimidazole-phenolate ligands (L1-L5), which are N,O-donors. These complexes exhibit intense blue emission in the solution and solid states accompanied by notable fluorescence quantum yields (ΦF). The study of the structure-property relation, through theoretical and experimental approaches, revealed a distinctive trend where compounds incorporating electron-donating substituents (methyl and ethoxy groups) in the phenolate moiety manifest shifts in emission wavelengths across the blue spectrum, concomitant with an increase in ΦF. Furthermore, the incorporation of an aromatic ring into the benzimidazole moiety considerably intensifies the rate of radiative relaxation from excited states. Notably, in the solid phase, either as a crystalline powder or loaded into polymer films, these modified complexes maintain or even surpass ΦF values observed in molecular solutions, ranging from 0.18 to 0.57, depending on the substitution. This characteristic makes these compounds attractive for applications in optoelectronics. All of the compounds were characterized using 1H, 13C, 11B, and 19F NMR, elemental analysis, and the molecular structures were corroborated through single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Computational calculations via time-dependent density functional theory further elucidate the tunability of optical bandgaps through group substitution on ligands, aligning well with experimental observations.

Cooperative Initiation in a Dinuclear Indium Complex for CO2 Epoxide Copolymerization

Dinuclear indium complexes have been synthesized and characterized. These include neutral and cationic indium complexes supported by a Schiff base ligand bearing a binaphthol linker. The new compounds were investigated for alternating copolymerization of CO₂ and cyclohexene oxide. In particular, the neutral indium chloride complex (±)-[(O_NapN_iN)InCl₂]₂ (4) showed high conversion of cyclohexene oxide and selectivity for poly(cyclohexene carbonate) formation without cocatalysts at 80 °C under various CO₂ pressures (2-30 bar). Importantly, the reactivity of the dinuclear indium chloride complex 4 is drastically different from that of the mononuclear indium chloride complex (±)-(NN_iO_tBu)InCl₂ (5), suggesting a cooperative initiation mechanism involving the two indium centers in 4.

Highly red-emissive salen–indium complexes: impact of 4-amino-substitution on the photophysical properties

4-NR2-appended salen–indium complexes were prepared via a one-pot synthetic pathway. The complexes exhibited narrow-bandwidth red emissions with high photoluminescence quantum yields that are the highest among the reported salen-based luminophores.

Complexes containing benzimidazolyl-phenol ligands and Ln(III) ions: Synthesis, spectroscopic studies and preliminary cytotoxicity evaluation

Fourteen new complexes were obtained from Ln(III)(NO₃)₃∙n-H₂O and the chromophores 2-(1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)-phenol (Bzp1) or 2-(5-methyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)-phenol (Bzp2). The complete characterization allowed us to assign unequivocally the structures of all the complexes. The techniques used for this purpose were Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-Vis) and Fourier-Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopies, High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry (HRMS), Magnetic Susceptibility (MS), Elemental Analysis (EA) and Molar Conductivity (MC). HRMS allowed us to find the molecular ion and its isotopic pattern. The FT-IR spectral data suggested that benzimidazolyl-phenol ligands coordinate with Ln(III) ions through iminic nitrogen and phenolic oxygen. Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) studies of NdBzp1 and GdBzp2 complexes indicate the presence of lattice water along with three nitrates and two benzimidazolyl-phenol ligands; the thermal decomposition was consistent with the minimal formula suggested by EA. The coordination type of the benzimidazolyl-phenol ligands, the geometry and the structural organization of these coordination complexes have been interpreted by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, and they coincided with the physicochemical data suggesting a coordination number eight for the Ln(III) ions. The cytotoxicity of the chromophores and their coordination complexes was tested against a cancer cell line (HeLa), as compared with structure/support cells (NIH-3T3) and defense cells (J774A.1), revealing that three coordination complexes showed moderate cytotoxicity against the cell lines studied.

The Important Role of Coordination Geometry on Photophysical Properties of Blue-Green Emitting Ruthenium(II) Diisocyano Complexes Bearing 2-Benzoxazol-2-ylphenolate

A series of blue-green emitting Ru^II diisocyano complexes containing 2-benzoxazol-2-ylphenolate (PBO) have been prepared. The complexes were isolated under varied reaction conditions in two isomeric forms, i.e., trans,trans,trans- (1) and cis,trans,cis- (2), with varied ligand coordination geometry above the Ru^II center. The photoluminescence of the isomeric complexes has been compared and tuned by the systematic variation of the electronic properties of the isocyanides. The cis,trans,cis- isomers exhibit structureless emission in the blue-green region (471-517 nm) upon excitation at λ_ex > 400 nm in dichloromethane solution at room temperature. Both isomeric forms show similarly structured greenish emission at 499-523 nm on excitation at λ_ex > 355 nm in a methanol/ethanol (4:1) glassy medium at 77 K. On careful comparison with the corresponding absorption and electrochemical data, it is suggested that the solution emission of the cis,trans,cis- isomers (2) at room temperature is originated from the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT), while a ligand-centered (LC) parentage is assigned for the emission in a glassy state for both isomeric forms. In line with the above experimental results, DFT calculation demonstrates the change in the nature and relative energy of the HOMOs and LUMOs with respect to the varied ligand coordination geometry and π-accepting ability of the isocyanides.

Fluorescent phenoxy benzoxazole complexes of zirconium and hafnium: synthesis, structure and photo-physical behaviour

A series of ten heteroleptic and homoleptic mononuclear Zr(iv) and Hf(iv) complexes bearing differently substituted phenoxy-benzoxazole ligands was synthesised. The complexes were characterised by 1H and 13C{1H} NMR spectroscopy as well as by elemental analyses and X-ray diffraction experiments. The molecular structures show octahedral or tetragonal-antiprismatic coordination motifs at the metal atom. The crystal packing patterns depend on the substitution of the ligands. The intermolecular interactions in the solid state are governed by weak π-π interactions, and are also dependent on the ligand structure. Photo-physical investigations reveal that all ten complexes show a ligand-centered fluorescence with emission maxima in the blue region of the electromagnetic spectrum.

Indium Catalysts for Ring Opening Polymerization: Exploring the Importance of Catalyst Aggregation

Inexorably, the environmental persistence and damage caused by polyolefins have become major drawbacks to their continued long-term use. Global shifts in thinking from fossil-fuel to renewable biobased resources have urged researchers to focus their attention on substituting fossil-fuel based polymers with renewable and biodegradable alternatives on an industrial scale. The recent development of biodegradable polyesters from ring opening polymerization (ROP) of bioderived cyclic ester monomers has emerged as a promising new avenue toward this goal. Ever increasing numbers of metal-based initiators have been reported in the literature for the controlled ROP of cyclic esters, in particular for the polymerization of lactide to produce poly(lactic acid) (PLA). PLA has several material weaknesses, which hinder its use as a replacement for commodity plastics. Despite many advances in developing highly active and controlled catalysts for lactide polymerization, no single catalyst system has emerged to replace industrially used catalysts and provide access to PLA materials with improved properties. We reported the first example of indium(III) for the ring opening polymerization of lactide. Since then, indium(III) has emerged as a useful Lewis acid in initiators for the controlled polymerization of lactide and other cyclic esters. In particular, we have developed a large family of chiral dinuclear indium complexes bearing tridentate diaminophenolate ligands and tetradentate salen and salan ligands. Complexes within our tridentate ligand family are highly active initiators for the moderately isoselective living and immortal polymerization of rac-lactide, as well as other cyclic esters. We have shown that subtle steric effects influence aggregation in these systems, with polymerization typically proceeding through a dinuclear propagating species. In addition, profound effects on polymerization activities have been observed for central tertiary versus secondary amine donors in these and other related systems. In contrast, our well-controlled and highly active chiral indium salen systems are more isoselective than the tridentate analogues and polymerize lactide via a mononuclear propagating species. Again, we have noticed that subtle steric and electronic changes to the ligand can influence both polymerization activity and stereoselectivity via aggregation phenomena. Recently, we have reported a promising new chiral indium catalyst supported by a tetradentate salan ligand. This catalyst is remarkably water and air stable and can be activated by linear and branched alcohols to provide controlled access to multiblock copolymers in air. This catalyst represents an important step forward toward generating new, commercially relevant catalysts for ROP of cyclic esters to produce novel biodegradable polymers, and highlights the unique value of indium-based catalysts in the field.

A Comparison of Gallium and Indium Alkoxide Complexes as Catalysts for Ring-Opening Polymerization of Lactide

The impact of the metal size and Lewis acidity on the polymerization activity of group 13 metal complexes was studied, and it was shown that, within the same ligand family, indium complexes are far more reactive and selective than their gallium analogues. To this end, gallium and aluminum complexes supported by a tridentate diaminophenolate ligand, as well as gallium complexes supported by N,N'-ethylenebis(salicylimine)(salen) ligands, were synthesized and compared to their indium analogues. Using the tridentate ligand set, it was possible to isolate the gallium chloride complexes 3 and (±)-4 and the aluminum analogues 5 and (±)-6. The alkoxygallium complex (±)-2, supported by a salen ligand, was also prepared and characterized and, along with the three-component system GaCl₃/BnOH/NEt₃, was tested for the ring-opening polymerization of lactide and ε-caprolactone. The polymerization rates and selectivities of both systems were significantly lower than those for the indium analogues. The reaction of (±)-2 with 1 equiv of lactide forms the first insertion product, which is stable in solution and can be characterized at room temperature. In order to understand the differences of the reactivity within the group 13 metal complexes, a Lewis acidity study using triethylphosphine oxide (the Gutmann-Beckett method) was undertaken for a series of aluminum, gallium, and indium halide complexes; this study shows that indium halide complexes are less Lewis acidic than their aluminum and gallium analogues. Density functional theory calculations show that the Mulliken charges for the indium complexes are higher than those for the gallium analogues. These data suggest that the impact of ligands on the reactivity is more significant than that of the metal Lewis acidity.

Metallogels of indium(iii) with bile salts: soft materials for nanostructured In2S3 synthesis

Metallo-hydrogels were formed from sodium cholate and deoxycholate in the presence of indium(iii). This soft hydrogel was used for nanostructured In₂S₃ synthesis.

Dinucleating Ligand Platforms Supporting Indium and Zinc Catalysts for Cyclic Ester Polymerization

The synthesis of the first alkoxide-bridged indium complex supported by a chiral dinucleating ligand platform (1), along with its zinc analogue (2), is reported. Both complexes are synthesized in a one-pot reaction starting from a chiral dinucleating bis(diamino)phenolate ligand platform, sodium ethoxide, and respective metal salts. The dinucleating indium analogue (7) based on an achiral ligand backbone is also reported. Indium complexes bearing either the chiral or achiral ligand catalyze the ring-opening polymerization of racemic lactide (rac-LA) to afford highly heterotactic poly(lactic acid) (PLA; Pr > 0.85). The indium complex bearing an achiral ligand affords essentially atactic PLA from meso-LA. The role of the dinucleating ligand structure in catalyst synthesis and polymerization activity is discussed.

White emitters by tuning the excited-state intramolecular proton-transfer fluorescence emission in 2-(2'-hydroxybenzofuran)benzoxazole dyes

The synthesis, structural, and photophysical properties of a new series of original dyes based on 2-(2'-hydroxybenzofuran)benzoxazole (HBBO) is reported. Upon photoexcitation, these dyes exhibit intense dual fluorescence with contribution from the enol (E*) and the keto (K*) emission, with K* being formed through excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT). We show that the ratio of emission intensity E*/K* can be fine-tuned by judiciously decorating the molecular core with electron-donating or -attracting substituents. Push-pull dyes 9 and 10 functionalized by a strong donor (nNBu2 ) and a strong acceptor group (CF3 and CN, respectively) exhibit intense dual emission, particularly in apolar solvents such as cyclohexane in which the maximum wavelength of the two bands is the more strongly separated. Moreover, all dyes exhibit strong solid-state dual emission in a KBr matrix and polymer films with enhanced quantum yields reaching up to 54 %. A wise selection of substituents led to white emission both in solution and in the solid state. Finally, these experimental results were analyzed by time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations, which confirm that, on the one hand, only E* and K* emission are present (no rotamer) and, on the other hand, the relative free energies of the two tautomers in the excited state guide the ratio of the E*/K* emission intensities.

Synthesis, structures and DFT calculations of 2-(4,6-dimethyl pyrimidyl)selenolate complexes of Cu(i), Ag(i) and Au(i) and their conversion into metal selenide nanocrystals

Dimethyl pyrimidylselenolates of Cu(i), Ag(i) and Au(i) were synthesized and utilized as precursors for preparation of the respective metal selenide nanocrystals.

Synthesis and characterization of luminescent cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes of 1,3-bis-hetero-azolylbenzenes with tunable color for applications in organic light-emitting devices through extension of π conjugation by variation of the heteroatom

A series of luminescent cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes of N^C^N ligands [N^C^N=2,6-bis(benzoxazol-2'-yl)benzene (bzoxb), 2,6-bis(benzothiazol-2'-yl)benzene (bzthb), and 2,6-bis(N-alkylnaphthoimidazol-2'-yl)benzene (naphimb)] has been synthesized and characterized. Two of the platinum(II) complexes have been structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. Their electrochemical, electronic absorption, and luminescence properties have been investigated. In dichloromethane solution at room temperature, the cyclometalated N^C^N platinum(II) complexes exhibited rich luminescence with well-resolved vibronic-structured emission bands. The emission energies of the complexes are found to be closely related to the electronic properties of the N^C^N ligands. By varying the electronic properties of the cyclometalated ligands, a fine-tuning of the emission energies can be achieved, as supported by computational studies. Multilayer organic light-emitting devices have been prepared by utilizing two of these platinum(II) complexes as phosphorescent dopants, in which a saturated yellow emission with Commission International de I'Eclairage coordinates of (0.50, 0.49) was achieved.
