Abstract
Since the seminal discovery of phenyl azide by Grieß in 1864, a variety of organic azides (R-N3) have been developed and extensively studied. The amenability of azides to a number of reactions has expanded their utility as building blocks not only in organic synthesis but also in bioorthogonal chemistry and materials science. Over the decades, it has been demonstrated that the reactions of main group compounds with azides lead to diverse N-containing main group molecules. In view of the pronounced progress in this area, this review summarizes the reactions of main group compounds with azides, emphatically introducing their reaction patterns and mechanisms. The reactions of forming inorganic nitrogen species are not included in this review.

Abstract
The new oxygen-bridged geminal Si/P Frustrated Lewis Pair (FLP) tBu2 P-O-Si(C2 F5 )3 (2) is able to reversibly bind carbon dioxide at ambient temperature. We compared its reactivity towards benzil, but-3-en-2-one, nitriles and phenylacetylene to that of the Al/P FLP tBu2 P-O-AlBis2 (Bis=-CH(SiMe3 )2 ) (1). When reacted with benzil, both, 1 and 2, form the 1,2-addition product, but in the Si/P FLP 2, the second carbonyl function additionally binds to the silicon atom. With but-3-en-2-one 2 forms the 1,2-addition product, while 1 binds in 1,4-position. The reaction with acetonitrile yielded an unexpected etheneimine adduct for both systems, while only 1 reacted with tert-butylnitrile. With benzonitrile and acrylonitrile, 2 showed reversible addition to the C≡N bond and 1 forms a stable adduct with benzonitrile. Solely 1 shows reactivity towards phenylacetylene affording a mixture of the CH deprotonation adduct tBu2 P(H)-O-AlBis2 (CCPh) and the FLP -C≡C 1,2-addition adduct under ring formation. All compounds were characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, XRD and elemental analysis.

Abstract
The two oxygen-bridged geminal frustrated Lewis pairs (FLP) tBu2 P-O-AlBis2 (Bis=CH(SiMe3 )2 ; 1) and tBu2 P-O-Si(C2 F5 )3 (2) were reacted with the heterocumulenes PhNCO, PhOCN, PhNCS, CS2 and PhNSO as well as SO2 . With isocyanate and cyanate, both 1 and 2, form addition products under formation of five-membered rings. With CS2 , isothiocyanate and sulfinylaniline, only 1 forms stable adducts, whereas 2 shows reactivity towards sulfinylaniline, but the product decomposed after a few minutes. The reaction of 1 with SO2 led to partial cleavage of the P-O-Al and Al-C units, as confirmed by X-ray diffraction studies of a complex aggregate. The reaction of 2 with SO2 affords the 1,2-addition product. All adducts were characterized by means of multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography and CHN analyses.

Abstract
Phosphine-stabilized Pb(II) cations, generated by chloride abstraction from chloroplumbylene 1, readily react with Lewis bases (L) such as phosphines and amines to give the corresponding donor-acceptor complexes 3. These complexes 3 react with phenylacetlylene via alkyne insertion into the Pb-L bond to afford the corresponding vinylplumbylenes 4. Of particular interest, the stable complex 4-HNiPr2 (with a secondary amine) can be used as a hydroamination catalyst of phenylacetylene.

Abstract
The reactivity of ferrocene‐based N‐heterocyclic tetrylenes [{Fe(η5−C5H4−NSitBuMe2)2}E] (E=Ge, Sn, Pb) towards mesityl azide (MesN3) is compared with that of PPh2‐functionalised congeners exhibiting two possible reaction sites, namely the EII and PIII atom. For E=Ge and Sn the reaction occurs at the EII atom, leading to the formation of N2 and an EIV=NMes unit. The germanimines are sufficiently stable for isolation. The stannanimines furnish follow‐up products, either by [2+3] cycloaddition with MesN3 or, in the PPh2‐substituted case, by NMes transfer from the SnIV to the PIII atom. Whereas [{Fe(η5−C5H4−NSitBuMe2)2}Pb] and other diaminoplumbylenes studied are inert even under forcing conditions, the PPh2‐substituted congener forms an addition product with MesN3, thus showing a behaviour similar to that of frustrated Lewis pairs. The germylenes of this study afford copper(I) complexes with CuCl, including the first structurally characterised linear dicoordinate halogenido complex [CuX(L)] with a heavier tetrylene ligand L.

Abstract
The germylene species (CH{(CMe)(2,6‐iPr2C6H3N)}2)GePCO 1 is shown to react with the Lewis acids (E(C6F5)3 E=B, Al). Nonetheless, 1 participates in FLP chemistry with electron deficient alkynes or olefins, acting as an intramolecular FLP. In contrast, in the presence of B(C6F5)3 and an electron rich alkyne, 1 behaves as Ge‐based nucleophile to effect intermolecular FLP addition to the alkyne. This reactivity demonstrates that the reaction pathway is controlled by the nature of the electrophile and nucleophile generated in solution, as revealed by extensive DFT calculations.

Abstract
A stable ionic κ2Sn,P-coordinated Ru complex shows excellent catalytic activity in aerobic oxidations of benzylamine and benzyl alcohol. This complex is stabilized by a stannylene-phosphine peri-substituted naphthalene ligand, which can act as either a reducing agent for a Ru(III) complex or as a κ2Sn,P-chelating ligand for Ru(II) compounds.

Abstract
The intramolecularly double-donor-stabilized stannylene 1 has been synthesized from the salt-metathesis reaction between two equivalents of lithium pyridine ene-amide L1 and SnCl2 . Compound 1 exhibits dipolar behavior when reacted with B(C6 F5 )3 leading to the zwitterionic compound 2. The reaction of 1 with one equivalent and 0.5 equivalent of AgOTf (OTf=trifluoromethane sulfonate) result in the formation of a stannylene-AgOTf complex 3 and a homoleptic distannylene-silver ionic complex 4, respectively. Analogous to complex 4, the gold(I) complex 5 has been synthesized from the reaction between two equivalents of 1 and 0.5 equivalent of AuCl.SMe2 /Me3 SiOTf. Complex 5 is the first example of homoleptic stannylene-Au(I) ionic complex among the very scarce reports on stannylene-gold(I) coordination complexes. All compounds have been structurally characterized using single crystal X-ray crystallography. Solution-state characterization have been performed using multinuclear NMR techniques. Detailed DFT calculations on the optimized geometries 1 o, 3 o-5 o reveal the change in sp- hybridization on the pyramidal Sn(II) center upon metal coordination and their bonding overlaps.

Abstract
Several 1,1'-diphosphanyl-substituted metallocenes of magnesium (magnesocenes) were synthesized, structurally characterized, and their reactivity and coordination chemistry were investigated. Transmetalation of these magnesocenes gives access to group 14 metallocenes (tetrelocenes), as well as to group 15 stibonocenes. These s- and p-block metallocenes represent a novel class of bis(phosphanyl) ligands, exhibiting Lewis-amphiphilic character. Their coordination chemistry towards different transition-metal and main-group fragments was investigated and different complexes are presented.

Abstract
The reactivity of the geminal frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) (F5 C2 )3 SnCH2 P(tBu)2 (1) was explored by reacting it with a variety of small molecules (PhOCN, PhNCS, PhCCH, tBuCCH, H3 CC(O)CH=CH2 , Ph[C(O)]2 Ph, PhN=NPh and Me3 SiCHN2 ), featuring polar or non-polar multiple bonds and/or represent α,β-unsaturated systems. While most adducts are formed readily, the binding of azobenzene requires UV-induced photoisomerization, which results in the highly selective complexation of cis-azobenzene. In the case of benzil, the reaction does not lead to the expected 1,2- or 1,4-addition products, but to the non-stereoselective (tBu)2 PCH2 -transfer to a prochiral keto function of benzil. All adducts of 1 were characterised by means of multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, elemental analyses and X-ray diffraction experiments.

The reactivity of the frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) (F5 C2 )3 SnCH2 P(tBu)2 (1) was investigated with respect to the activation of elemental hydrogen. The reaction of 1 at elevated hydrogen pressure afforded the intramolecular phosphonium stannate(II) (F5 C2 )2 SnCH2 PH(tBu)2 (3). It was characterized by means of multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction. NMR experiments with the two isotopologues H2 and D2 showed it to be formed via an H2 adduct (F5 C2 )3 HSnCH2 PH(tBu)2 (2) and the subsequent formal reductive elimination of pentafluoroethane; this is supported by DFT calculations. Parahydrogen-induced polarization experiments revealed the formation of a second product of the reaction of 1 with H2 , [HP(tBu)2 Me][Sn(C2 F5 )3 ] (4), in 1 H NMR spectra, whereas 2 was not detected due to its transient nature.

Abstract
Phosphine-stabilized germaborenes featuring an unprecedented Ge=B double bond with short B⋅⋅⋅Ge contacts of 1.886(2) (4) and 1.895(3) Å (5) were synthesized starting from an intramolecular germylene-phosphine Lewis pair (1). After oxidative addition of boron trihalides BX3 (X=Cl, Br), the addition products were reduced with magnesium and catalytic amounts of anthracene to give the borylene derivatives in yields of 78 % (4) and 57 % (5). These halide-substituted germaborenes were characterized by single-crystal structure analysis, and the electronic structures were studied by quantum-chemical calculations. According to an NBO NRT analysis, the dominating Lewis structure contains a Ge=B double bond. The germaborenes undergo a reversible, photochemically initiated [2+2] cycloaddition with the phenyl moiety of a terphenyl substituent at room temperature, forming a complex heterocyclic structure with GeIV in a strongly distorted coordination environment.

Abstract
The Lewis acid-base complexation chemistry of dimethyl- and diphenylstannylene (SnMe2 and SnPh2, respectively) in hexanes solution has been studied by laser photolysis methods. Complexation of the two stannylenes with a series of nine O-, S-, and N-donors (including cyclic and acyclic dialkyl ethers and sulfides, a primary, secondary, and tertiary amine, ethyl acetate and acetone), two alkenes, and an alkyne proceeds rapidly and reversibly to generate the corresponding stannylene-donor Lewis pairs, which have been detected in each case by time-resolved UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. The complexes exhibit UV-vis absorption maxima in the range of λmax ∼ 310-405 nm depending on the donor and substitution at tin. Bimolecular rate constants for complexation (kC), which could be determined for 14 of the 24 Lewis pairs that were studied, were found to fall within a factor of four of the diffusional limit in all cases, with SnMe2 showing consistently higher reactivity than SnPh2. Equilibrium constants for complexation (KC) could be measured for all but one of the stannylene-π- and O-donor pairs, the values corresponding to (gas phase) binding free energies in the range of +1.1 to -3.9 kcal mol-1. Comparison of the experimental equilibrium constants for complexation of SnMe2 and SnPh2 with methanol and diethyl ether to those measured previously for the homologous silylenes and germylenes indicates that Lewis acidity decreases in the order SiR2 > SnR2 > GeR2 for both the dimethyl- and diphenyltetrylene series, the diphenyl derivatives exhibiting significantly stronger Lewis acidity in all three cases. The experimental trends in the binding energies and UV-vis spectra of the complexes are reproduced well by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which have been carried out at the (TD)ωB97XD/def2-TZVP level of theory. The experimental data also show evidence of a reaction between tetramethyldistannene (Me2Sn[double bond, length as m-dash]SnMe2, 4a) and amine donors, which is suggested to afford the corresponding amine-stabilized stannylidenestannylene structure. The mechanistic proposal is supported by DFT calculations of the complexation of 4a and SnMe2 with model O-, S- and N-donors.

Abstract
1,1'-Dilithioferrocene was reacted with 2 equiv of isopropyl (Ar*) or methyl (Ar') substituted terphenyl tin(II) chloride. Reaction product 1, carrying the bulkier terphenyl substituent Ar*, displays a bis(stannylene) structure in the solid state without formation of a tin-tin bond. Temperature-dependent solution 119Sn NMR spectroscopy, however, revealed a dynamic interplay between bis(stannylene) (100 °C) and cyclic distannene (-80 °C). In contrast to 1, the less bulky Ar' substituent results in a cyclic distannene 2. On the basis of temperature-dependent 119Sn NMR spectroscopy the Sn-Sn bond of compound 2 was preserved up to 100 °C. Both compounds were further characterized by solid-state 119Sn NMR spectroscopy as well as 119Sn and 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy. 1 reacted as a chelating ligand with nickel and palladium complexes [Ni(cod)2] and [Pd(nbe)3] (nbe = norbornene). In the resulting coordination compounds the nonstabilized stannylene acts as a donor as well as an acceptor ligand and shows a dynamic switch from donor to acceptor behavior in the monopalladium complex.

Abstract
The non-donor-stabilized PSnP pincer-type stannylene Sn(NCH2PtBu2)2C6H4 (1) has been prepared by treating SnCl2 with Li2(NCH2PtBu2)2C6H4. All attempts to synthesize the analogous PSiP silylene by reduction of the (previously unknown) silanes SiCl2(NCH2PtBu2)2C6H4 (2), SiHCl(NCH2PtBu2)2C6H4 (3) and SiH(HMDS)(NCH2PtBu2)2C6H4 (4; HMDS = N(SiMe3)2) have been unsuccessful. The almost planar (excluding the tert-butyl groups) molecular structure of stannylene 1 (determined by X-ray crystallography) has been rationalized with the help of DFT calculations, which have shown that, in the series of diphosphanetetrylenes E(NCH2PtBu2)2C6H4 (E = C, Si, Ge, Sn), the most stable conformation of the compounds with E = Ge and Sn has both P atoms very close to the EN2C6H4 plane, near (interacting with) the E atom, whereas for the compounds with E = C and Si, both phosphane groups are located at one side of the EN2C6H4 plane and far away from the E atom. The size of the E atom and the strength of stabilizing donor-acceptor PE interactions (both increase on going down in group 14) are key factors in determining the molecular structures of these diphosphanetetrylenes. The syntheses of the chloridostannyl complexes [Rh{κ2Sn,P-SnCl(NCH2PtBu2)2C6H4}(η4-cod)] (5), [RuCl{κ2Sn,P-SnCl(NCH2PtBu2)2C6H4}(η6-cym)] (6) and [IrCl{κ2Sn,P-SnCl(NCH2PtBu2)2C6H4}(η5-C5Me5)] (7) have demonstrated the tendency of stannylene 1 to insert its Sn atom into M-Cl bonds of transition metal complexes and the preference of the resulting PSnP chloridostannyl group to act as a κ2Sn,P-chelating ligand, maintaining an uncoordinated phosphane fragment. X-ray diffraction data (of 6), 31P{1H} NMR data (of 5-7) and DFT calculations (on 6) are consistent with the existence of a weak PSn interaction involving the non-coordinated P atom of complexes 5-7, similar to that found in stannylene 1.

Abstract
N-Propargyltetramethylpiperidine reacts with a series of trans-alkenyl-B(C6F5)2 compounds to give the substituted alkenyl-bridged frustrated N/B Lewis pairs 5. Their structures and spectroscopic features indicate a pronounced participation of the mesomeric s-trans-iminium/borata-alkene resonance form. The compounds are thought to be formed in a stepwise addition/rearrangement process which is initiated by a trans-1,2-amine/borane FLP addition to the carbon-carbon triple bond to generate a reactive zwitterionic aziridinium/alkenylborate intermediate. Subsequent alkenylborate attack leads to opening of the activated three-membered heterocycle with clean formation of the products 5a-c. Treatment of the propargyl-TMP substrate with B(C6F5)3 gave a stable example of such an aziridinium/borate betaine, which was isolated and amply characterized. The products 5a-c are active N/B FLPs. They split dihydrogen heterolytically under mild conditions to give the respective NH+/BH- products 9a-c. These contain Z-configurated core C═C double bonds, which indicates rotational equilibration around the central C-C bond of 5a-c during this reaction. Structural and chemical features of the 5c system were analyzed by DFT calculations.

Abstract
The reaction of intramolecular stannylene phosphorus Lewis pairs with heavier dichlorides of group 14 (GeCl2, SnCl2, PbCl2) is reported. Phosphine base stabilized stannyl germylenes/stannylenes were formed by the oxidative addition of an E-Cl bond to the stannylene tin atom (E = Ge, Sn). In solution, a dynamic equilibrium between two diastereomeric configurations was observed. With PbCl2 a redox reaction towards elemental lead and the dichlorinated tin(iv) compound was found. All compounds were characterized by X-ray diffraction, NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis.

Abstract
The N-geminal P/Al Lewis pair [Ph2PN(2,6-iPr2C6H3)AlEt2]2 (1) has been prepared and studied for reaction with a series of alkynes. The reaction of 1 with RC≡CR yielded zwitterionic C2PNAl-heterocyclopentene [Ph2 ⌜PN(2,6-iPr2C6H3)AlEt2](CR=⌝CR) (R = Me (2), Ph (3)); with PhC≡CEt produced two isomers, [Ph2 ⌜PN(2,6-iPr2C6H3)AlEt2](CPh=⌝CEt) (4a) and [Ph2 ⌜PN(2,6-iPr2C6H3)AlEt2](CEt=⌝CPh) (4b); and with other alkynes generated [Ph2 ⌜PN(2,6-iPr2C6H3)AlEt2](CR1=⌝CR2) (R1, R2 = CO2Et, Ph (5); SiMe3, Ph (6); PPh2, Ph (7); SiMe3,H (8); H, EtO (9)). Natural bond orbital analysis of the charge separation of the C≡C bond of alkynes was carried out, and then, the electronic matching interaction mode between the combined Lewis acid (AlEt2) and base (PPh2) groups of 1 and the C≡C bond of such alkynes was discussed. Reactions of 1 with alkene, nitrile, and carbodiimide molecules were also carried out, and cycloaddition compounds 10-12 were produced.

Abstract
The tin(IV) compounds MexSn(2-C6F4PPh2)4-x (1, x = 1; 2, x = 2) and ClSn(2-C6F4PPh2)3 (3) were obtained from the reactions of 2-LiC6F4PPh2 with MeSnCl3 (3:1), Me2SnCl2 (2:1), or SnCl4 (3:1), respectively. The reactions of 2-LiC6F4PPh2 with SnCl4 in different stoichiometric ratios (4:1-1:1) gave 3 as the main product. Compound Cl2Sn(2-C6F4PPh2)2 (4) was formed in the transmetalation reaction of 3 and [AuCl(tht)] but could not be isolated. 1 and 2 react with palladium(0) sources {[Pd(PPh3)4] and [Pd(allyl)Cp]} by the oxidative addition of one of their Sn-CAryl bonds to palladium(0) with formation of the heterobimetallic complexes [MeSn(μ-2-C6F4PPh2)2Pd(κC-2-C6F4PPh2)] (5) and [Me2Sn(μ-2-C6F4PPh2)Pd(κ2-2-C6F4PPh2)] (6) featuring Sn-Pd bonds. The reaction of 3 with palladium(0) proceeds via the oxidative addition of the Sn-Cl bond to palladium(0), thus furnishing the complex [Sn(μ-2-C6F4PPh2)3PdCl] (7) featuring a Sn-Pd bond and a pentacoordinate Pd atom. Transmetalation of MexSn(2-C6F4PPh2)4-x (x = 1-3) with [Pd(allyl)Cl]2 gave MexClSn(2-C6F4PPh2)3-x and [Pd(allyl)(μ-2-C6F4PPh2)]2. For x = 1, the compound MeClSn(2-C6F4PPh2)2 (generated in situ) reacted with another 1 equiv of [Pd(allyl)Cl]2 by the oxidative addition of the Sn-Cl bond to palladium(0) and the reductive elimination of allyl chloride, thus leading to [MeSn(μ-2-C6F4PPh2)2PdCl] (8). The reductive elimination of allyl chloride was also observed in the reaction of 3 with [Pd(allyl)Cl]2, giving [Sn(μ-2-C6F4PPh2)3PdCl] (7). All compounds have been characterized by means of multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and selected compounds by 119Sn Mössbauer spectroscopy. Computational analyses (natural localized molecular orbital calculations) have provided insight into the Sn-Pd bonding of 5-8.

Abstract
Despite the rapid development of frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) chemistry over the last ten years, its application in catalytic hydrogenations remains dependent on a narrow family of structurally similar early main-group Lewis acids (LAs), inevitably placing limitations on reactivity, sensitivity and substrate scope. Herein we describe the FLP-mediated H2 activation and catalytic hydrogenation activity of the alternative LA iPr3 SnOTf, which acts as a surrogate for the trialkylstannylium ion iPr3 Sn+ , and is rapidly and easily prepared from simple, inexpensive starting materials. This highly thermally robust LA is found to be competent in the hydrogenation of a number of different unsaturated functional groups (which is unique to date for main-group FLP LAs not based on boron), and also displays a remarkable tolerance to moisture.
